How to clean a yellow metal watch bracelet. How to clean silver at home - chains, bracelets, rings? Cleaning a bracelet made of precious materials

A properly chosen watch looks stylish. But lovers of this accessory should know how to clean a metal watch bracelet or a strap made of another material. After all, even with careful wear, skin particles remain on it, sweat is absorbed, and other contaminants are possible. At home, it’s enough to simply put them in order. But it’s better to entrust the mechanism to a master.

How to clean a steel watch bracelet?

It all depends on the type of pollution. If paint

- use solvent or kerosene: wipe the stain with a cloth soaked in solvent until it disappears, and then wipe with a damp cloth to remove the smell of kerosene.

To remove grease and dirt

use means:

  • Dish detergent, laundry soap or shampoo. Remove the bracelet from the watch and leave it in the solution for 20 minutes. Soaked and softened dirt can now be easily removed with a soft cloth or toothbrush. After wiping, the watch should also be wiped with a damp cloth and polished dry.
  • A good way to remove dried-on greasy dirt from the small holes of a woven bracelet is to leave it in a solution of baking soda and water for 20 minutes. The soda will dissolve the grease, and dirty stains can be washed under running water. After the procedure, the watch should be wiped dry.
  • A 1:1 mixture of baking soda and vinegar is a fairly strong product suitable for any metals: stainless steel, silver and gold, among others. Moisten a toothbrush in the product and clean out dirt from the bracelet. No need to soak.
  • Another working solution is a mixture of ammonia and vodka in half. The bracelet is soaked for 5 minutes, or wiped with a toothbrush.

Cleaning the gadget

There is nothing difficult about cleaning wearable electronics, and in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, it should be done regularly. The main thing here is to do no harm. Any decent smart watches and bracelets are now produced without connectors on the case and correspond to a moisture protection class of at least 5 ATM. Formally, they can withstand strong pressure of tap water, but you still shouldn’t mindlessly put the device under the stream.

You also need to avoid the temptation to resort to household chemicals. Use detergent, glass washing liquid, powder, and in general everything that is available in abundance in any home.

No, household chemicals, of course, can clean watches and bracelets very easily, but abrasive substances and aggressive chemicals present in many products can just as easily damage the screen coating, and with regular use they will cause the paint to peel off from the body of the accessory. There is a good chance that after these procedures, instead of a nice gadget, you will get a shabby something that is unpleasant to wear in plain sight.

What then should you use to clean it with? Plain water is best, or at most soap or a special safe product for cleaning monitors without alcohol. Dampen a lint-free cloth; if you don’t have one, take any one, wring out the cloth properly so that no moisture drips off, and then carefully walk over the body several times. If necessary, repeat several times until the desired result is achieved, and then let the gadget dry.

Things to remember

You cannot soak the bracelet for a long time: not every coating will react happily to this. It may change color or fade.

Also, do not clean the bracelet with abrasive agents: undissolved soda, sand, etc. This can scratch or erase the bracelet's protective coating.

If the watch is expensive and you are afraid to take risks, then it is better to take the watch to a service center: the dirt will be treated with an ultrasonic cleaner, and the stains will be safely removed. In addition, it can be difficult to remove the bracelet from the watch yourself, and soaking the bracelet together with the watch is strictly forbidden.

As a result of daily wear, the bracelet naturally becomes dirty. You can, of course, replace it with a new one. You can also spend a little time and put it in order yourself or go to a watch workshop.

Cleaning a regular metal bracelet

The most gentle way to clean a bracelet is to use vinegar and soda. They are mixed in equal proportions to the consistency of thick sour cream. Using a brush with the applied mixture, carefully clean the surface of the bracelet, connecting elements and clasp. If the bracelet has stones, you should choose a softer brush.

For the next method of sedum, you need to purchase foil. It is placed at the bottom of any container. Place a bracelet on top and sprinkle with a small amount of soda. This is all poured with hot water and left for 15-20 minutes. Then the bracelet should be washed and dried with a soft cloth.

To prevent the bracelet from becoming too dirty, you should periodically clean it with warm water and dishwashing detergent. It is especially effective to carry out such procedures in the hot season.

Cleaning leather and fabric straps

For high-quality cleaning, you need to mix a small amount of liquid soap with warm water. Adding a few drops of ammonia to the solution also gives a good effect. Using a cloth, wipe the strap well with the resulting solution. After finishing the treatment, remove soap residues using a damp cloth.

If your white leather bracelet has lost its original appearance, do not despair. Using one egg white diluted in a glass of milk, you can restore its color, while also cleaning the strap from dirt.

A fabric bracelet can be cleaned well with warm water and dishwashing liquid. If the bracelet is heavily soiled, an old toothbrush will also come in handy.

Cleaning a bracelet made of precious materials

If you have a silver watch, you can also tidy it up at home. Prepare a mixture of toothpaste (without abrasive particles), ammonia and baking soda. Apply it with a brush to the bracelet and leave for half an hour. Then, without scratching the bracelet, carefully remove the mixture with a napkin and polish with a soft cloth.

A natural gold bracelet can be restored to shine using regular cosmetic powder. Use a soft cloth with powder applied to polish the product. If powder is not available, it can be replaced with baby powder or crushed chalk chips.

Silver is a very noble metal; jewelry made from this material looks rich and elegant, while the price cannot be called exorbitant. Unfortunately, silver has a very unpleasant feature; its only drawback is its tendency to darken. Therefore, if you like to wear not even individual elements, but entire sets, the question will inevitably arise of how to clean silver at home - chains, bracelets, rings.

Often the reasons for the darkening of silver are: contact with water, human sweat, a humid environment and banal aging of the metal. Experts say that this phenomenon cannot be avoided, which means we need to find ways to combat the problem. This article will focus on silver chains, but these tips and remedies can be applied to any silver item.

How to clean and polish a watch case at home

To remove dirt inside the accessory, the product is disassembled into parts, the head is removed, and the mechanism is removed. Place all the elements on a napkin and first remove dust from the body, and only then clean the remaining parts.

Ordinary

The cost of the accessory and its appearance are influenced not only by the number of functions, the complexity of the caliber, but also by the type of material from which the case is made, which protects the mechanism from damage. Withstands impacts, is not afraid of corrosion, tolerates temperature changes, and stainless steel is well polished. Some well-known Swiss companies and Chinese companies produce watches with cases made of this material.

Domestic companies and foreign brands produce watch models with brass cases, which are easy to maintain and durable, but rust and oxidize. To remove dirt and deposits, the zinc and copper alloy is cleaned with alcohol and polished with a dry cloth.

Silver

Wristwatches are made from precious metals; they perform their main functions and serve as a work of art. The silver case is cleaned using different means:

  1. A spoonful of ammonia is dissolved in a liter of water. Wipe the part with the composition and polish it with a soft cloth.
  2. The protective coating of the watch is treated with lemon juice and dried with flannel.
  3. Apply toothpaste or tooth powder to the blackened metal with a brush and rinse under the tap.
  4. The body, removed from the accessory, is left for an hour in a salty solution, and the plaque is removed with a sponge.

Darkened silver is soaked in starch, cleaned with a damp cloth and dry cotton wool. The dial is wiped with a cloth, and other elements of the watch are treated with alcohol.

Cleaning silver chains with chemicals

Today, there are many methods that allow you to clean silver yourself at home. When purchasing silver items abroad, you will receive a specially made cleaning product as a gift along with them. But often our jewelry stores offer such preparations.

Important! If you have not purchased such a product, then you can use any available chemical preparations, for example, dishwashing detergent. You just need to apply it to a sponge and rub the product. Be sure to use any chemical according to the instructions.

Moreover, stores can now offer special napkins, soap and even ultrasonic devices for cleaning silver. Absolutely all of these methods will work when cleaning silver.

Use a melamine sponge for this.

Interesting fact: once I even tried to remove such stains with nail polish remover - it didn’t help. Yes, branded silicone straps for Apple Watch can be easily cleaned with a melamine sponge.
But how do I know this? About three months ago, furniture maker Vadim, who worked on the kitchen for my small apartment, advised me to use melamine sponges to clean the countertops and facades. Matte white furniture easily absorbs dirt, so the question turned out to be difficult.

I first researched local stores, and when I didn't find anything useful, I ordered a pack of melamine sponges from AliExpress.

This dirt is already ingrained, it cannot be washed or washed off without special means.

A month later I had a box of sponges.

With their help, I easily cleaned not only the countertops and facades in the kitchen, but also removed stains from painted walls, brought my AirPort Express, as well as the treasured white Apple Watch strap, to new condition.

Cleaning silver chains using available products

It is quite easy to clean a silver chain at home using available products. There are an innumerable number of methods, but we will tell you about the most basic ones.

Toothpaste

A very common method is brushing with toothpaste. But gel or colored toothpaste is not suitable for cleaning this metal; choose a white product.

The technology couldn't be simpler:

  1. Use a toothbrush with small but soft bristles.
  2. Rub the jewelry with toothpaste using gentle movements for 5 minutes.
  3. Rinse off the product with running water and dry with a towel.

Ammonia

Ammonia solution or ammonia is also a very effective and common method that allows you to clean a silver chain from blackness at home, regardless of the complexity of the contamination.

You need to act like this:

  1. Take a glass and pour warmed soapy water into it.
  2. Add 6-7 drops of ammonia.
  3. Place a silver chain or other silver jewelry into the resulting mixture for 15-20 minutes.
  4. After the expiration date, simply rinse the silver with cold running water.

Important! You can add chalk powder to ammonia and rub the silver with this mixture. After 5 minutes the blackening will disappear.

Salt and soda

Salt and soda are very effective in combating the tarnishing of silver if used in this way:

  1. Take a pan and line the bottom with foil.
  2. Pour water into a saucepan, 3-4 cm high.
  3. Place the blackened chain at the bottom of the vessel and cover it all with 2 tablespoons of salt and 2 tablespoons of soda.
  4. Place the pan on the fire and boil the resulting liquid. Before your eyes, silver will regain its former shine and radiance.
  5. As soon as all the blackness is gone, you should take out the chain, dry it and boldly put it on your neck.

Important!
In this method, soda is often replaced with citric acid. You can also simply mix salt with water and thoroughly rub the silver chain with the mixture and rinse under running cold water.

Potato

The next method for cleaning a silver chain involves potatoes. Yes, it also helps clean silver and give it shine.

It works like this:

  1. Boil 3 peeled potatoes until tender.
  2. In another ceramic bowl, place foil at the bottom and place a silver chain there.
  3. Pour the vegetable broth into the container with the decoration for 20 minutes.
  4. After you rinse the product, there will be no blackness left on it.

Soda

This method is designed to easily deal with the problem of cleaning silver at home - it doesn’t matter whether it’s chains, bracelets, rings or other jewelry.

Apply the product like this:

  1. Place the foil on the table and cover it with baking soda.
  2. Place silver jewelry on this foil and wrap it.
  3. Place the wrapped tubes in a saucepan with soapy water and boil it.
  4. After boiling, you need to turn off the burner and leave the liquid to stand for about 10-15 minutes.
  5. Next, remove chains or other jewelry from the water and place it in a bowl of cold water.
  6. We wipe them with a towel and notice that all the darkening has disappeared.

Olive oil

Another equally simple method for cleaning such metal. Olive oil is applied to a towel, which should be used to wipe the silver items. After this procedure, wash off the fat with water and soap, followed by classic drying.

Vinegar

Vinegar can also clean silver jewelry quickly and easily:

  1. Pour some vinegar into a deep enough container.
  2. Place a chain or other silver item there. Some people simply soak a rag in vinegar and rub it on the silver, but the first method is much more effective.
  3. Then the decoration is washed with cold running water and wiped dry.

Aqua regia

The most effective, but also dangerous method is the use of “royal vodka”. The method of application is absolutely the same as with vinegar. The only thing is that doctors do not recommend using this method, since the product is very harmful to health.

There are several simple and inexpensive methods that will make your struggle with cleaning a silver chain at home easier. They will help you solve the problem of blackening on silver jewelry much easier and faster:

  1. Cloth material is an excellent solution for cleaning silver at home. It is enough to simply rub the jewelry with cloth, and the dullness and blackening will disappear.
  2. Some try to fight darkening with soda drinks, in particular Coca-Cola. It is the most common drink for cleaning silver. The cola is poured into a fairly deep container and silver jewelry is placed there for 2-3 hours, or it is boiled in the drink. After this, the silver is rubbed with foil and rinsed in cold water.
  3. You can also use lemon juice. Pour freshly squeezed juice into a container and place the silver there for 20-30 minutes (depending on the number of stains and the degree of darkening). If you don’t have lemon juice, you can prepare a fairly concentrated solution with citric acid. On average, you will need 1 sachet per 1 glass.

The result is obvious - the strap is almost like new

This photo clearly shows that with the help of a sponge it was possible to get rid of dirt by 99%.
I have been rubbing the white silicone strap with melamine sponges for more than a month, and everything is completely fine with it. It is not only clean, but also not worn through to holes in unexpected places. Therefore, I consider this cleaning method safe and recommend it to you.

Separately, I would like to add that any light-colored straps for Apple Watch are difficult to consider practical, since they really get dirty easily - they stain on the long sleeves of sweaters and jackets, and absorb dirt like a sponge.

Main conclusions:

1. A melamine sponge works great for even the most seriously dirty Apple Watch straps.

2. I even tried using nail polish remover, but a melamine sponge is better.

3. An alternative to a melamine sponge can be a liquid for cleaning mirrors and windows, but a melamine sponge is still cooler.

4. Light-colored straps easily smear on clothes with long sleeves, so it’s better to leave them for the summer and wear dark ones in the cold season.

Be sure to tell us how you deal with dirt on your straps. Just don’t say that everyone only has black ones!

How to determine what alloy a piece of jewelry is made of?

Before you begin to rid the product of blackness, you need to determine what it is made of. The most commonly found material is an electroplated alloy. It could be as follows:

  • cupronickel Contains nickel, manganese, iron and copper. The product looks like silver;
  • nickel silver – copper, zinc and nickel. If the content of the latter is high, the decoration becomes white with a blue or green tint and practically does not rust;
  • pewter. It is based on tin. Nickel and lead are absent in such jewelry. Mostly their coating is gold or silver plated;
  • brass. Consists of zinc and copper. Brass jewelry has a yellowish tint;
  • bronze. It is based on copper and tin.

How to properly clean tarnished jewelry made from various metals?

For darkened metal jewelry, you can use a special cleaning paste. It will help to carefully get rid of dirt and oxidation. If you don’t have such a product nearby, you can prepare the recipe yourself from ingredients available in every home. In order not to completely spoil the product, it is necessary to take into account the material from which it is made. Let's look at ways to clean metal jewelry:

  1. To prepare the solution you will need water - 100 ml and tooth powder or chalk - 2 tbsp. l. Mix the ingredients. Clean the decoration with a soft bristle brush. Rinse off the remaining mixture and wipe with a wool cloth.
  2. Toothpaste will help restore jewelry to its previous condition. You need to apply it to the brush and go over the problem areas.
  3. Some sources contain advice on cleaning jewelry from rusty areas with vinegar. Particular care must be taken as if it is made of surgical steel there is a risk of further darkening.
  4. Jewelry made to look like silver can be cleaned with baking soda. You need to add water to it until you get a mushy mass. Apply the product to the product, leave for a few minutes, then clean with a toothbrush. Rinse with water and wipe.
  5. Ammonia works well. You need to soak a cloth in it, apply it to the jewelry, and polish it with a dry cloth.
  6. You can dip a ring or bracelet in a soap solution, leave for ten minutes, and rinse. If stains remain, remove them using a toothbrush previously dipped into it.

Copper jewelry (for example, cupronickel) can be cleaned in the following ways:

  • a mixture of vinegar and fine salt. The ingredients must be combined to form a paste. Dip a rag in it, wipe the product, rinse and dry;
  • Pass a few cloves of garlic through a grater, add a pinch of salt, and apply to jewelry. Leave for five minutes, rinse with water.

Abrasive products are not suitable for gold jewelry, as there is a high risk of ruining it. It is worth using only gentle methods:

  1. You need to dissolve the soap in water, dip the product in it, rinse with a soft sponge and wipe. You can use a cotton swab for hard-to-reach areas.
  2. To make jewelry shine, you should add drops of ammonia to water.
  3. The decoration can also be cleaned with a cloth soaked in wine vinegar. After rinsing it should dry on its own.

To tidy up jewelry with glass and rhinestones, you need to dip it in dishwashing detergent dissolved in water. For shine, you can add a spoonful of ammonia. The mixture should not be at too high a temperature. The length of time the products remain in the liquid depends on the intensity of the contamination. A better effect can be achieved by slightly moving the container where they lie.

If you are not sure about the authenticity of the stones on the jewelry, it is better not to wet it, but to polish it with a woolen cloth. To clean items with opals, mother-of-pearl and aquamarine, you can use clean water. Afterwards they must be wiped dry.

It is difficult to find a watch brand today, especially one that is widely known, that does not have a watch model on a metal bracelet in its assortment. And for some of the brands, such as ROLEX, the total dominance of models on a metal bracelet is perhaps one of the most important distinctive features of the iconic Swiss brand. Extreme reliability and durability of the design, the possibility of “fine” adjustment to the required size - these are just a few of the most important advantages of bracelets made from various metal alloys. But it is quite obvious that since there are many materials, the features of caring for bracelets made from them can vary greatly.

What are watch bracelets made of?

We hasten to please you, dear readers, with the fact that the times when even very well-known watchmakers widely used such ultra-low-cost alloys as brass and alloy for the manufacture of watch bracelets are practically a thing of the past. Not very durable in maintaining a presentable appearance due to the rubbing of the protective coating during active use, such bracelets, in addition to this, also began to oxidize on the inside. As a result, dark stains appeared on the wrist, which did not look aesthetically pleasing and also stained the light cuffs of the shirts. We remember and tell you about this for a very practical purpose, in order to reasonably dispel idle slander about such defectiveness, supposedly universally inherent in any of the metal bracelets. Well, with the possible exception of gold ones.

So, from the most popular bracelets made of stainless steel, titanium alloy or high-tech ceramics today, if some darkening appears on the wrists, especially in the summer months, then this is only and exclusively due to the significant contamination of these bracelets. Indeed, in recent years, most watch manufacturers have been using low-allergenic stainless steel 316L or its closest analogues even for their inexpensive models. And since this steel is used in jewelry and even in the medical field, it is completely unlawful to blame the unworthy quality of watch bracelets made from it. The same applies to watch bracelets made from titanium alloys, known for their hypoallergenic properties, and high-tech ceramics, the former of which are also 40% lighter than steel, and the latter are distinguished by super-hardness, and therefore increased resistance to scratches.

Therefore, since the bracelets get dirty, you need to learn how to clean them! And quite naturally, the more regularly you do this, the less chance you will have of getting your wrist dirty, and you will be guaranteed to have an impeccably presentable appearance.

How to clean a watch bracelet?

Well, now we bring to your attention one of the most optimal ways, in our opinion, to clean a metal watch bracelet efficiently and safely.

  1. First of all, we check whether the winding key is pushed in (or screwed) into the watch in its original position. If everything is in order with this, then for watch models with a water resistance level lower than 5 ATM, disconnect the bracelet. If this is too difficult, then all work on cleaning the bracelet is carried out by holding the watch case above the level of the liquids in which it will be immersed. In watch models with high levels of water protection (from 5 ATM and above), you can not disconnect the bracelet, but in addition to cleaning the bracelet, you can also clean the watch case, especially its back and the junction points with the bracelet. Attention! If the watch case has many external polished surfaces, then it is better to wipe them with cotton swabs or a soft cloth, rather than with a toothbrush!
  2. We unfasten the bracelet clasp and pre-clean all accessible surfaces from external dirt using a soft cloth.
  3. Dip the watch bracelet into warm soapy water. To do this, first fill a sink or some small container with warm water and add a small amount of antibacterial soap there. This is necessary so that all links of the bracelet get a cleaning composition that promotes deeper dissolution (acidification) of existing dirt and fat deposits. If your watch is not water resistant, be careful to only dip the bracelet into the solution. The duration of the bracelet's stay in the solution is determined experimentally and can range from 1 to 15 minutes, depending on the degree of contamination and the regularity of cleaning.
  4. We carry out cleaning actions by holding the bracelet suspended or immersed in the solution. To do this, we use a toothbrush with soft bristles, which can get deeper into the hard-to-reach spaces between the links of the bracelet. Using a brush, we consistently clean all areas of the bracelet and the clasp on all sides. If the bracelet has polished surfaces of the links, then we control the pressure forces so as not to scratch them with the bristles.
  5. We rinse the bracelet and clasp under running sufficiently hot water, simultaneously determining how well all areas have been cleaned. If we find still dirty areas of the bracelet, then again dip these places in the soap solution for a few more minutes and clean them. Then we wash the bracelet again and inspect it.
  6. Wipe the entire bracelet and clasp with a dry soft cloth. It is also possible to dry the bracelet with a hairdryer with a low air flow temperature for more optimal drying of areas located deep between the links.
  7. To give your bracelet more shine, you can spray a little ammonia-based cleaner on a soft cloth and wipe the surface with it. And then wipe the bracelet again with a dry soft cloth. Also, glass cleaning fluid can be used to soak the bracelet and then clean it, as we did with a soap-based solution.

And now we consider it necessary to draw your attention to other options discovered during the preparation of the article

Strap and bracelet
