Removing polyurethane foam - effective means for cleaning surfaces, hands, hair and clothes

Polyurethane foam is widely used for various construction and repair work. It is suitable for sealing cracks, filling openings in windows and doors, gluing building structural elements and household products, and performing a lot of important functions.

Often the work process is accompanied by contact of the sealed composition on various substrates, hands, clothing and hair. What effective means can you quickly remove polyurethane foam in solid and liquid form?

Home remedies for removing sealant

In the absence of a special aerosol or solvent, improvised means will help you wash foam from your hands at home. Their main advantages are availability, safety and ease of use. However, they do not always have an immediate result, and it will take a lot of effort to completely remove the sealant.

Salt

The simplest and most effective home remedy is table salt. Application procedure:

  1. Wet the stained area with warm water.
  2. Wash your hands with salt. Gently massage the stained area to remove any remaining sealant.
  3. Wash your hands with soap and then moisturize with cream.

Table salt or sea salt will help remove sealant from your hands; it acts as a scrub and cleanses the skin.

Vegetable oil

To clean significant dirt or remove hardened sealant, use vegetable oil. Instructions for use:

  1. Heat the vegetable oil to a comfortable temperature.
  2. Dampen a cotton pad and spread the product over the stain. To remove large stains, apply an oil-soaked cloth and leave for half an hour.
  3. Wash your hands under running water and soap.

Laundry soap

Laundry soap will help get rid of minor stains:

  1. Prepare a bath of warm water and soak your hands in it for 10 minutes.
  2. Rub moistened and steamed skin well with laundry soap.
  3. Scrub the stained area with a brush or pumice stone.
  4. Wash your hands well under running water.

Laundry soap is an effective means for removing foam from the skin of the hands.

Mechanical cleaning

A mechanical method will help remove the frozen composition. For the procedure, prepare a pumice stone, a stiff brush or sponge, soap and vegetable oil. Cleansing algorithm:

  1. Steam your hands in hot water for 10 minutes.
  2. Apply a rich cream or heated vegetable oil to the stain and leave for 25-30 minutes.
  3. Lather a pumice stone or brush and rub your hands well with it. Proceed carefully so as not to damage the skin.
  4. Repeat the procedure until the sealant is completely washed off.

After removing the foam, apply cream to your hands to moisturize and nourish the skin.

Effective means at hand

There are no special cleaners - try removing polyurethane foam from clothes at home using other equally effective solvents.

Apply gasoline and white spirit to a cloth and wipe the dried foam with it

You need to wait until the stain dissolves, wash it off with lukewarm water and completely clean it with a clothing stain remover. Use solvents carefully: first apply your chosen product to a small area of the fabric and see how the material reacts. If the color is not “eaten”, the fibers do not spread, then the stains can be treated. Some experienced housewives advise freezing dried foam before processing: then the removal process itself will go much faster

Place soiled items in the freezer. After a certain time, cut off the sealant with a sharp knife, only very carefully, and after that use a solvent. But it’s still more convenient to put an ice cube on the soiled fabric, and it’s better to put it in a little bag so as not to wet the material. Even nail polish remover can remove fresh foam from clothes, but only one that contains acetone. Wet a cotton swab with liquid and gradually, millimeter by millimeter, clean the fabric from dirt. Try to remove dried foam with dimexide, a medicine that is sold in every pharmacy. Dampen a small piece of cloth or cosmetic pad in it, place it on the stained area, and check from time to time how well the remaining foam on the clothing has softened. Thoroughly clean the stain with either a brush or the hard side of a kitchen sponge, and wash the area in warm water with laundry soap. Immediately after treatment, try to very carefully rinse the remaining dissolved sealant from the clothing: the foam very quickly penetrates into the fibers of the fabric and forms unsightly yellow spots when the sun's rays hit the product. If you won’t need your soiled clothes soon, hang the item in the sun and wipe out the dried foam from time to time. This stain removal process is not for the faint of heart, but it can be used to clean fairly dense fabric.

And be careful not to ruin things completely.

You can save expensive furniture upholstery or wash foam from clothes at home

Experienced builders who have already had to deal with the consequences of careless use of polyurethane foam claim that it is very difficult to wash off the foam

During repairs, polyurethane foam can easily get on clothes

Useful tips

So, all methods have been tried, the result has been achieved or not. In any case, the situation is not hopeless. Remember that even if none of the tips suggested above helped you, after a few days the remaining foam will peel off from the skin on its own.

If you do not want to harm your health and mood, do not use acidic substances, and vinegar in particular. With all its qualities and properties, it will not help solve this problem, but it will certainly cause a chemical burn.

After carrying out skin cleansing procedures, take care of its condition. After all, it was real stress for her, which means she will need products with regenerating properties. These include nourishing creams from any cosmetic company, aloe juice and other products.

The main advice, of course, was and remains the purchase of protective gloves and clothing. It is easier to prevent a problem than to solve it. Gloves and clothing will protect the most problematic areas from foam. In addition, it would not be superfluous to acquire, in addition to polyurethane foam, means for its removal. After all, during work, the sealant can get not only on the skin, but also on other surfaces, from where it will need to be wiped off. And in general, in such cases, insurance will not be superfluous.

How to prevent product from getting on your skin

Even at the stage of purchasing all the necessary materials for repairs, you need to stock up on a special product that will allow you to quickly and effectively wash off the mounting foam from any surface.

In addition, when working with sealant, you should not forget about personal protective equipment. First of all, you must protect your hands. The easiest way to do this is with gloves. Depending on your personal preference, these could be thick rubber, cotton, or even medical grade latex gloves.

Hair should be covered with a scarf, cap or hat, depending on the time of year and where you will be while working with foam - outdoors or indoors.

Clothing should be old and unnecessary, while covering arms and legs as much as possible to prevent the sealant from getting on the skin. After all, it is much easier to clean foam from clothes than to try to wipe it off your skin. As a last resort, if the clothes are very dirty, they can be thrown away. But if foam gets on your skin, especially a large amount, you will have to tinker a lot longer.

Methods for removing liquid construction foam

If polyurethane foam gets on your skin, try to remove it as soon as possible. Under no circumstances should you smear this product on your hand. You should try to remove the stain with a clean napkin or cloth, moving the mixture towards the center of the stain. Residues should be washed off. But this must be done before the composition hardens.

There are several ways to wash foam from your hands:

  • Before starting work, it is advisable to stock up on a special aerosol solvent. Ideally, it should be from the same manufacturer as the foam can. The aerosol is applied to the contaminated area and then washed off with plenty of water. Such solvents usually work well with liquid foam, but are powerless against frozen foam.
  • You can remove uncured mass with an acetone-based solvent. Use a napkin soaked in solvent to quickly but thoroughly wipe off the foam, and then wash your hands well with soap.
  • This sealant can be easily washed off with kerosene. If none of the above is found, then you can try to remove this sealant from the skin using improvised means that are always available at home.
  • A good way to wipe off the foam is with a napkin moistened with slightly warmed vegetable oil. This product is harmless to the body. If you are patient and hold the oil on the contaminated area for 20-30 minutes, it will be able to remove even the remnants of frozen foam.
  • Regular table salt will help clean your hands well enough from traces of sealant. You need to gently rub the contaminated areas with it, and then wash your hands with soap.
  • On the Internet there is a recommendation to use the drug “Dimexide”. Indeed, this preparation dissolves construction foam well, but it cannot be used to clean hands! “Dimexide” is well absorbed and enters the human body through the skin. Like any medicine, it has side effects and taking it without a doctor’s prescription and supervision is highly undesirable.

Using this product you can clean walls and furniture, or remove drops of foam from the floor.

What not to do and why?

There are several restrictions that you should remember before starting the process of removing hardened polyurethane foam.

Thus, dried polyurethane foam sealant should never be washed off under pressure of water. The result of such actions will be even more hardened pollution (foam expands under the influence of water).

Do not scrape the frozen layer from the surface with a knife or rub it with abrasive powders (scratches and abrasions that remain in place of the dried foam cannot be removed).

Do not apply solvents to varnished or painted surfaces. The result of such cleaning is whitish, worn-out gray hair, which is impossible to get rid of.

Acetone-based compounds should not be used to clean iron doors. By reacting with the surface, the polyurethane foam penetrates even more deeply into the thickness of the metal. Subsequently, under direct sunlight, particles of sealant appear on the iron surface in the form of yellow, indelible stains.

How to clean fresh and dried foam

Polyurethane foam contains polyurethane foam and has the qualities necessary to solve construction problems: high adhesion to most materials, adhesive ability, it hardens, filling all cracks and crevices. If the foam is fresh, you can quickly dissolve it with acetone. After drying, it will no longer be possible to clean the surfaces in this way.

You cannot wash off the construction foam with water; it will penetrate even more into the structure of the base and harden more strongly.

From hands and clothes

If foam gets on your hands and face, and several hours have passed, then you need to act with caution so that the skin does not suffer irritation or chemical burns from aggressive substances. Clothes or fabric upholstery of a sofa can also get dirty, and after chemical cleaning the textile paint may dissolve, leaving light stains

There are several practice-tested methods for washing foam from hands and clothes.

One bottle of Dimexide costs about 50 rubles

The easiest way to clean clothes is based on the property of foam to become brittle at sub-zero temperatures. You need to put the item in a bag in the freezer of the refrigerator. Frozen foam comes off easily from the fabric; after mechanical cleaning, it is recommended to wash the clothes. Polyurethane foam is destroyed and softened by direct sunlight.

A proven and safe method involves the use of a simple drug called Dimexide, which is sold in pharmacies for pennies and without a prescription.

Sequencing:

  1. It is necessary to work with rubber gloves; the product must be applied to the area of contamination for 40 minutes.
  2. Clean off the polyurethane with a brush, then wash the items of clothing thoroughly.

The following method is absolutely harmless to health and can be used if polyurethane gets on the skin of the face and hands. Pour vegetable oil onto the stained area for 30 minutes and then remove with a sponge. Perfectly removes stains and table salt solution.

From a construction pistol

To reuse a construction gun, you will have to clean it after each use. Stores sell special cleaners that dissolve even dried foam. Anyone planning to do repairs needs to know in advance how to clean a foam gun.

Penosil can be purchased at a hardware store

During operation, it is not recommended to disconnect the gun from the cylinder, and upon completion, you need to rinse the tube with acetone, white spirit or a commercial ready-made cleaner. To rinse, a container with a composition, for example, Penosil, must be connected to the gun and pressed on the trigger until the plug comes out completely.

From the doors

Most often, polyurethane foam gets on windows and doors during installation; it is almost impossible to insert the door frame without contamination. Wooden surfaces are usually coated with varnish or paint; aggressive chemicals can damage the glossy finish.

Table salt dissolved in water removes many stubborn stains

You can remove excess and splashes of foam using simple table salt. One tablespoon of the substance should be dissolved in a glass of water and the contaminated areas should be treated with the resulting product. After 5-10 minutes, rub the stains with a wet cloth.

Other cases

The most common cases are when foam gets on glass, PVC, or hair.

Here are ways to clean them:

  • It is better to clean the glass when the foam has completely hardened, scrape off the splashes with a blade or sharp knife, and wipe the residue with acetone, and then with clean water or glass cleaner;
  • On PVC and laminate surfaces, when exposed to acetone and other solvents, irremovable stains appear; in this case, you can use a mechanical method: scrape or cut off the foam with a construction knife or plastic spatula, having previously softened the stains with vegetable oil;
  • From metal surfaces, you should first cut off the foam, and then spread the stains with vegetable oil for 30 minutes, remove with a sponge and wash with soap and water to remove the greasy shine;

For linoleum, a suitable product is “Dimexide” or a special purchased composition.

There are several solutions to this problem, they are all simple and do not require significant financial costs.

As a result, after repair, all surfaces that were inadvertently exposed to polyurethane foam can be restored to their original appearance.

Where else does it often end up and how to wash it off?

Before working with polyurethane foam, protect all nearby surfaces by covering them with disposable material. Repairs must be carried out in special clothing, which you don’t mind throwing away, since it is difficult to remove dried clots from the fabric. But despite the measures taken, the material may accidentally end up on various surfaces. How to remove splashes from soiled objects and things?

From clothes

To remove traces of polyurethane foam, there are several methods:

  1. Mechanical method. Cool the damaged tissue by placing it in the freezer or placing an ice cube on the stain. The hardened and brittle substance is scraped off with a knife or needle.
  2. Cleaners. Wash to remove polyurethane foam is applied directly to the dirt with a cotton swab.
  3. Disguise. The damaged area is covered with applique or embroidery. In this way, not only does the trace of pollution disappear, but also the wardrobe is updated.

Varnished surface

If the object is varnished, it is best to remove the mounting foam from it at the moment when it has stopped sticking to your fingers, but has not yet hardened. This stage is called the formation of the rubber substance. The substance is carefully picked up by the edge and completely removed from the surface, after which the base is treated with napkins to remove the greasy mark.

From the doors

The method of removing polyurethane foam from doors depends on the material from which they are made:

  1. If the door is metal, the sealant can be removed mechanically: cut off with a knife or blade, and the remaining residue can be removed using a stiff brush. The chemical method is also suitable for metal doors. Apply any of the solvents (Macroflex, Cosmofen, Dimexide) to the contaminated area for 15 minutes and then wipe off with napkins.
  2. Plastic doors are cleaned with Cosmofen 10. The remover can handle fresh and hardened clots. The surface is treated with a napkin with the product applied to it until the stain disappears.
  3. Wooden door leaves can be cleaned well with Dimexide, which must be tested in advance in an inconspicuous area. The excess is cut off, the product is applied for 10 minutes, after which the cleaner is washed off along with the remaining stain.
  4. Eco-veneer is a capricious material, the structure of which can be damaged by aggressive solvents. The polyurethane foam is cut off with a knife, the area is wiped with a damp sponge and treated with soda. You can try to remove contamination using white spirit, be sure to test it in advance in an inconspicuous area. Apply the product for half a minute, then clean the surface with a dry cloth.
  5. Glass doors can be cleaned with vegetable oil. But if it gets on the wood, it will lead to unsightly greasy stains that cannot be removed.

From plastic windows

Construction foam used when installing plastic windows often ends up on the plastic profile and glass. You can wipe away its traces using professional cleaners that are effective and safe, or you can turn to improvised means.

Floor cleaning

If polyurethane foam accidentally falls on the floor, you must carefully choose a cleaner so as not to harm the coating. Depending on the type of flooring, different cleaning techniques may be more effective and safer.

Linoleum

To clean smooth linoleum that does not have a textured pattern, the sealant is allowed to dry and then peeled off. For floor coverings with ornaments, you can use white spirit, acetone or plain water. Water lasts a long time; the stain needs to soak for about 12 hours, and this method is suitable if there is no risk of seepage under the coating.

Laminate

The safest product for laminate flooring is vegetable oil. An aggressive solvent can damage the coating, and prolonged exposure to water will cause the laminate to swell.

Carpet covering

The carpet can be cleaned with Dimexide, gasoline, kerosene, acetone or nail polish remover. Before using the product, it is necessary to test it on an inconspicuous area; the cleaner may ruin the color of the coating. After using the solvent, the carpet must be washed to eliminate the odor and also to prevent the product from corroding the coating.

Polyurethane foam is an indispensable material for repair work, but if it gets on the skin of your hands, it will cause significant discomfort. Simple tools that are always at hand will help solve this problem.

How to clean clothes from frozen foam

Foam getting on clothes is not always noticeable. As a result, the sealant hardens and you have to solve the problem of removing frozen marks, which will require slightly different methods and means.

Special solvent

Just as in the case of fresh stains, old stains can be effectively removed with a product specially developed for such cases. You can buy it in hardware stores, and its action is similar to that of a remover for a mounting gun, but more intense. You can use it to wipe off old foam as follows:

  1. We remove everything that can be removed with our hands or thin objects; for a better result, you can lightly rub the fabric in the area of contamination with a brush.
  2. Wet a cloth or napkin generously in the cleaning liquid and wipe the stain.
  3. We wait 20 minutes, clean with a brush or an abrasive sponge, and then wash in the usual mode for fabric with plenty of rinsing.

If a positive result is not achieved the first time, repeat the procedure.

Dimexide

A medicinal product for external use, the main active ingredient of which is dimethyl sulfoxide. This substance can dissolve not only dried foam, but also, for example, superglue. Mode of application:

  1. We remove the foam cap and all excess sealant that can be reached.
  2. Apply the drug liberally to the stain using any available method (with a cotton swab, a cloth, carefully pour it from a bottle, etc.).
  3. We leave the dirt in this state for half an hour, after which you can clean everything with a brush.

After cleaning, you will have to wash the item in a machine or by hand and rinse it with as much water as possible.

Stain remover and refined gasoline

If gasoline is not available, thinner or kerosene will do. As a stain remover, you can use any available product that is sold in a supermarket or specialized household chemical stores, for example, Vanish. To remove a stain using these products, you need to perform the following steps:

  1. After removing the main fragments of contamination, wipe the area to be cleaned with solvent or gasoline.
  2. We wait 20 minutes, after which we lightly moisten the stain, apply stain remover and lightly wash.
  3. After half an hour, we wash the clothes in the machine, following the recommendations indicated on the tag.

Exposure to low temperatures

A somewhat exotic, but quite effective method, tested by experienced housewives using chewing gum. You can remove a stain using it by following the following sequence of actions:

  1. We place the problematic clothing in a plastic bag so that the area with the foam remains outside.
  2. Place the bag in the freezer and wait until the contaminant has cooled completely.
  3. After the foam has completely frozen, remove it with your hands or with a brush.

We treat the remaining stain with a solvent, then wash everything with a large amount of powder and rinse thoroughly.

Ultraviolet (direct sunlight)

Polyurethane foam is destroyed when exposed to direct sunlight. This property will help remove it from items of clothing that you don’t mind leaving in the sun and there is no urgency in cleaning them. The method is quite simple and consists in leaving the affected item of clothing in a place accessible to sunlight for several days, periodically visiting it to rub the stain and free it from destroyed fragments of sealant.

Sunflower oil

Vegetable oil can be used as a solvent for paint or varnish. A substance such as polyurethane foam also falls into the category of substances suitable for oil cleaning. You can use it to get rid of old foam stains as follows:

  1. Apply hot vegetable oil to the surface cleaned of excess foam.
  2. After 10 minutes, sprinkle the slightly moistened stain with washing powder and wash.
  3. We wash it in the usual way for clothes, in a machine or by hand, and rinse thoroughly.

If you were unable to remove all the foam from your clothing the first time, you can apply the hot oil again, first removing the remaining powder with warm water.

Professional products

Stain removers will not help in this case; you need to use special solvents.
This may be a liquid intended for washing mounting guns or a foam solvent in the form of a spray. Gun cleaning fluid will help remove fresh foam. Procedure:

  • still soft foam must be immediately removed from clothing using a spatula or just a piece of cardboard;
  • you need to try to remove as much of the substance as possible, so that later it is easier to eliminate the remains;
  • you need to clean carefully, from the edges to the center, otherwise you can simply smear the foam over the surface, increasing the area of contamination;
  • take a piece of white, clean cloth, moisten it with gun cleaning fluid and wipe off the stain;
  • send clothes to the wash, you can wash them in a machine or by hand; when washing by machine, it is recommended to use the soaking and additional rinsing mode.

Liquids for washing the gun are produced in the form of a liquid, as well as in the form of impregnated wipes. The latter option is very convenient for cleaning fresh stains from clothes.

It should be taken into account that the substances contained in the solvent can damage the fibers of the fabric or change its color. Therefore, you first need to evaluate its effect on the fabric by dropping it on the hem of the bottom or in another place that is not obvious.

It is somewhat more difficult to wipe off dried foam. A foam solvent is suitable for solving this problem. It is more effective, but also more aggressive than gun wash.

First you need to try to remove the maximum amount of foam mechanically. If the layer is thick, you can try to cut it off with a knife; if the layer is thin, remove it with a nail file. But these methods are not suitable for thin and delicate fabrics.

Then you need to spray the solvent directly onto the stain and leave for about half an hour, then carefully wipe off the remaining foam. Then wash the item in the machine.

The following solvents can be used to remove foam:

  • Liquid for washing construction guns. Sold in 0.5 liter aerosol cans.
  • Makroflex Premium. Removes fresh stains well, sold in 0.5 liter aerosol cans.
  • Grover Cleaner and Grover Remover. The first option is ideal for removing fresh stains. The second product is more expensive, but it will also cope with dried stains. Suitable not only for fabric, but also for leather.
  • Available in two types. The spray removes fresh stains well. The product in the form of a paste copes with old stains.

You can use other foam solvent options.

How to wash foam from hands when it has already hardened?

If you were unable to clear your hands of foam in time and it managed to harden during this time, then you should prepare for a long and very painstaking process. As practice shows, if the polyurethane foam has hardened, it is not possible to clean it with solvents. Therefore, you will have to remove the foam from your hands mechanically. But many manufacturers claim that it is their solvent that can easily completely clean dried polyurethane foam from the skin of the hands. But this is just an advertisement; in fact, these solvents are not able to completely remove the foam from your hands and you will have to practically scrape most of the dried mass off your skin.

In order to clean your hands from foam, you first need to steam them well. This should be done in hot water, over steam or in warm vegetable oil. Moreover, if you steam your hands in water or over steam, then you should lubricate them with any greasy cream so as not to damage the epidermis in the future during mechanical cleaning.

To deal with dried polyurethane foam, you can use various tools - a pumice stone for your feet, a hard brush, which you first need to soap, or even, you won’t believe it, soft sandpaper. Only, when using these tools, you need to be extremely careful so as not to remove a layer of your skin along with the dried foam. But even all these products may not completely clean the skin and foam particles may remain. You can try to pick them out with your fingernail, or they will fall off on their own over time along with the top layer of the epidermis.

After all these procedures, the skin must be lubricated with fresh aloe juice, which has excellent regenerating properties, or with a rich cream.

But next time when working with polyurethane foam, do not forget to wear gloves.

If the foam has not yet dried

  • it is necessary to carefully remove the foam from the skin. You will need two thin spatulas. They need to pick up a piece of polyurethane on both sides. To do this, you need to ask someone to help;
  • If particles of polyurethane foam remain on the skin, they should be removed with a solvent and wiped off with a dry cloth. If you can’t remove everything, you need to do it again. Afterwards you need to wash the body area with a brush and soap;
  • if PU foam particles are found on a large area of the body, apply vegetable oil to the fabric and remove the polyurethane from the edges to the center. Then use a spatula to remove any remaining particles. And then remove the dirt with a cloth and solvent. The contaminated area on the skin must be treated with soap.

Ways to flush at home

When working with polyurethane foam, it is necessary to protect your hands with gloves. If the material ends up on the skin, you need to wipe it off as soon as possible, because fresh traces can be removed even with wet wipes. The stain is rubbed from the edges to the center so as not to increase the affected area.

Vegetable oil

The oil is absolutely harmless to the skin, unlike more aggressive professional solvents. For greater efficiency and faster results, the oil is heated a little, but not too much, to avoid burns.

Special solvent

When purchasing foam, it is advisable to take a special solvent from the same manufacturer. Most often they come in aerosol form and cope well with fresh marks, but are practically powerless against dried ones.

Tytan

The stores offer a wide range of Polish Tytan products, including construction foams and foam removers. The manufacturer produces universal products for removing both uncured and hardened foam from various surfaces.

Bau Master

The cleaner from a Russian manufacturer does not contain aggressive components and carefully cleans various surfaces, including the skin of hands and clothing, from fresh construction foam. The gentle product does not cause mechanical or chemical damage.

Soudal

Soudal has been producing polyurethane foams, sealants, adhesives and roofing sealants for over 50 years. This manufacturer's cleaner will remove fresh stains from typical construction tools, surfaces and hands. An additional tube applicator ensures precise and economical dosing.

Kudo Foam Remover

The polyurethane foam remover of the Russian company KUDO, produced at a plant near Moscow, will eliminate the remains of hardened foam. Created specifically for cleaning window frames, door frames, window sills. It takes up to half an hour to soften the foam, after which the product is carefully washed with a dry cloth.

Quilosa Orbafoam Remover

The cleaner softens and removes dried polyurethane foam from various surfaces. The mixture of components contained in the product is life-threatening if inhaled and comes into contact with the skin, so it is better not to use Quilosa Orbafoam Remover to clean your hands.

Acetone

To get rid of sealant on the skin, apply acetone to a cotton pad and quickly wipe off the skin. Afterwards, wash your hands with soap. Instead of acetone, a nail polish remover based on it is also suitable.

White Spirit

A universal solvent is also used to remove traces of sealant from the skin. Use a cotton swab dipped in white spirit to gently wipe off the dirt.

Salt bath

It is easier to wash foam from steamed skin. Prepare a bath of hot water for your hands, adding a tablespoon of table salt to it. Hands hover for 5-10 minutes, after which the foam is wiped off.

At the pharmacy you can buy an anti-inflammatory and analgesic drug - “Dimexide”. The drug effectively copes with traces of glue on various surfaces; even polyurethane foam will not resist it. The use of Dimexide on the skin of the hands is undesirable, since the product is quickly absorbed and may have side effects.

Doors and windows

The polyurethane composition includes catalysts and stabilizers, which are responsible for the consumption and foaming of the material. After the expiration of the specified excess balances are very difficult. There are effective ways to clean polyurethane foam without damaging the area being treated.

Basic means for cleaning polyurethane foam from the surface of a door or window opening:

  • Acetone and a liquid based on it effectively dissolve the polyurethane mixture, but will leave marks on the varnished surface.
  • To remove fresh composition, cleaning agents ULTIMA and PENOSIL are suitable, which effectively remove the applied sealant.
  • Professional products Penosil-Premium, Cosmofen, Isofoam R621 are used to remove hardened residues from plastic.

Pharmacies sell the drug Dimexide, which has good dissolving properties. Dimexide removes hardened composition from any surfaces, gradually destroying the foam structure.

Important: When using Dimexide, you must wear gloves, as there is a risk of burns. Complete cleaning of the hardened polyurethane foam occurs within 24 hours.

PVC material

Polyurethane sealant is most often used to insulate plastic windows, so excess insulation remains on the surface of the glass unit, frame, and window sill. When applied very carefully on the surface of a plastic window in the area of the gaps, the mass hardens into unsightly drops, which can be cleaned in the following way:

  • The visible part of the composition is carefully trimmed with a knife and removed.
  • Apply a little vegetable oil to the resulting stain.

3. To clean foam from plastic windows, allow the oil to soak in for 15 minutes.

Types of construction pistols

In construction, two types of tools for polyurethane foam are used:

  • household - made of plastic, inexpensive and not suitable for repeated use. They have a non-separable design, which prevents high-quality cleaning;
  • professional - made of metal, resistant to various chemical compounds (sealant and cleaning composition). They mostly have a collapsible design and are suitable for frequent and long-term use.

For regular construction and repair work, it is preferable to use a metal collapsible gun, which is reliable, durable and easy to maintain due to its collapsible design.
Professional builders are recommended to use metal models that can be disassembled, thoroughly cleaned and, if necessary, replaced worn out parts. Such pistols are a simple design that includes:

  • adapter for fixing the cylinder;
  • trigger;
  • metal barrel;
  • adjusting screw (allows you to adjust the speed and amount of sealant supply);
  • handle.

Effective ways to clean foam deposits from a gun

To keep the tool in working condition, take care of its cleanliness regularly. Foam deposits should be washed off immediately after finishing work, while the sealant is still fresh and not hardened. To do this, before starting repairs, think about how you will carry out cleaning and take care of purchasing a special cleaner or solvent.

Washing with aerosol cleaner

At the end of the work, the container with polyurethane foam is removed from the unit, but a large amount of sealant remains in the barrel, which quickly dries out and in the future interferes with the normal functioning of the unit. A simple method that involves using a special cleaner will help you cope with the problem. Purchase the product at the same time as purchasing the foam and choose formulations from the same company, for example, Staye, Profflex, Atoll Cleaner, Hauser, Germez, Dali, etc.

Start cleaning the construction gun immediately after finishing work, since washing off fresh sealant is much easier than removing dried foam

Aerosol rinsing procedure:

  1. Read the instructions and rules of use.
  2. Install the cleaning aerosol into the adapter.
  3. Turn the barrel away from you and pull the trigger.
  4. Clean the device until clean liquid flows from the barrel.

When working with the cleaner, observe safety precautions:

  • Do not clean near fire or heat appliances, keep the can away from direct sunlight;
  • avoid contact of the substance with eyes, mucous membranes and skin;
  • After using the cleaning product, ventilate the room well and wash your hands with soap.

Cleaning a gun with dried foam

If the tool could not be cleaned immediately after finishing work and the sealant had time to set, follow these steps:

  1. Using a utility knife, cut off the remaining foam from the base of the barrel and drop a little solvent onto it.
  2. Lower the barrel, wait a few minutes, and then try pulling the trigger. Do not apply significant physical force to avoid damaging the instrument.
  3. If the trigger doesn't move, drop a little cleaner onto the ball located where the bottle is screwed on. This will clear a valve that is clogged with foam. After 20 minutes, attach the cleaning spray and clean.

Mechanical cleaning of a construction gun

If there is significant contamination, it is necessary to mechanically clean the gun, which includes three stages: disassembly, cleaning and assembly. To complete the process correctly, please read the detailed description of each step.

Disassembly. To begin with, from the outer part of the tool, use a stationery knife to cut off the sealant that has managed to harden. Carefully unscrew all parts to be removed. Disassemble the tool slowly so as not to damage the threads and working elements.

Cleaning all elements. Clean all parts using an old rag, utility knife, wire or thin tube. You can clean the mounting gun from dried foam with cleaner, acetone, gasoline, White Spirit, nail polish remover or Dimexide.

To properly clean a construction gun, it is necessary to disassemble it and wash each part separately using special products or solvents.

Cleaning procedure:

  1. Cut off large areas of dirt with a utility knife. Proceed carefully so as not to scratch or damage the working parts.
  2. Soak small parts in the selected solvent and then clean with a stiff brush.
  3. Place a few drops of solvent into the barrel to soften dried foam.
  4. Using a homemade cleaning rod, clean the hole until the wire runs freely along the entire barrel.

Assembly. Reassemble the cleaned instrument and wash it again using an aerosol.

Mechanically cleaned tools should be washed again with a special cleaner after assembly to achieve maximum results.

To extend the life of a construction gun, buy a high-quality dismountable tool made of metal, and also make sure you have a solvent that will allow you to quickly and easily clean the device. Start cleaning the unit immediately after finishing work, since fresh foam is much easier to clean than hardened foam.

Features of removing traces of foam from various surfaces

During construction work, any surfaces can be contaminated with polyurethane foam. To avoid misunderstandings, it is recommended to use gloves to protect the skin, construction tape or film to protect adjacent surfaces.

Skin of hands and face

The most frequently contaminated areas are hands, bare areas of the body and face. It is best to wash the skin from foam as quickly as possible, without waiting for the sealant to harden. It is recommended to wipe off the foam in several ways:

  • Polyurethane foam is removed from the skin using solvents or acetone.
  • Warm vegetable oil does an excellent job of removing fresh marks - this is the safest method for sensitive facial skin.
  • To clean the skin of your hands, use regular sand, which, like sandpaper, removes old traces of sealant.

Hair and wool

It also happens that foam can get on your hair, or your beloved pet may get dirty in it as it runs past the repair work. The adhesion between hair and foam is extremely strong, so it needs to be removed while still fresh.

It is best to use an industrial solvent for construction foam or acetone if a specialized product is not available. Alas, strands that cannot be cleaned will have to be cut with scissors.

Cloth

Work clothes, furniture, fabric shoes and other textiles are often contaminated.

When removing foam from fabric, it is important not to damage the product. Effective ways:

  • Method for freezing foam in the freezer. To do this, place the clothes in the freezer for several hours, after which it is enough to clean the product with a hard brush.
  • Another interesting way is to heat the fabric. Place the fabric in the sun. The dried foam softens and the adhesion weakens. Now the sealant can be wiped off with a rag or washed using regular washing powder.
  • Dimexide and acetone. It is recommended to start cleaning with the dough to avoid damage to the fabric. If the trial test is successful, then the product is applied to the contaminated part of the clothing, sofa upholstery or carpet pile using a cotton swab. Soak the fabric well to dissolve the foam in the fibers of the material. Then wash off the solvent with soapy water or wash it.

Glass

Polyurethane foam is often used for the installation of plastic windows, doors and stained-glass windows. Therefore, contamination of glass surfaces occurs quite often. You can clean the foam:

  • Freshly applied sealant can be easily removed with a solvent. To do this, wipe the glass with a cloth soaked in the solution.
  • The dried sealant is scraped off with a scraper, and the residues are removed with Dimexide.
  • Special glass cleaning products, for example SOUDAL PU Pemovel.

Wood and brick

Wood is a particularly sensitive material to influence. If for some reason the doors, window frames, wooden floors or slopes were contaminated with foam, then the stain should be removed in a gentle manner:

  • Using special wood products.
  • Dimexide will help remove marks from a wooden surface and a brick wall, without leaving greasy stains, discoloration or damage to the varnish layer.

Metal

To combat foam stains on metal and iron surfaces, for example, the front door, two-level treatment is used:

  • First you need to remove the “foam mushroom” using a scraper or knife.
  • Next, treat the metal with a chemical agent, for example, Purex in the form of a paste or Dimexide.

Linoleum, laminate and parquet

But cleaning stains on floor coverings such as linoleum or laminate is much more difficult. Adhesion between materials is too strong. But there are ways:

  • Special solutions that can be purchased at hardware stores.
  • Acetone or white spirit can handle fresh sealant.
  • Vegetable oil cleans floors quite well.

Plastic

Plastic window frames can be cleaned of polyurethane foam in two ways:

  • Folk method. To deal with fresh sealant, vinegar or vegetable oil will help. After processing, it is recommended to wash the plastic using detergent.
  • Chemicals are suitable for dried stains. You can use special solutions or the same dimexide.

Tile

The cleaning of tiles and tiles is most favorable. The following methods are used:

  • Any types of chemical cleaners (acetone, white spirit, special cleaners, Dimexide).
  • Folk methods represented by the idea of rubbing with vinegar and oil.

Laminate

The best method to remove polyurethane foam from laminate is to use branded removers. Powerful components effectively clean the laminated coating from various types of contaminants. When the sealant composition is destroyed, it is removed with a piece of cloth or a sponge. You can use Dimexide, especially to remove fresh dirt.

How to remove polyurethane foam from a laminate using a chemical composition:

  • Wear gloves, open windows and doors so that the room is well ventilated.
  • Scrape off the top layer of sealant from the laminate with a spatula, knife, or scraper.
  • Treat the surface with a chemical compound, preferably before it dries.
  • Wipe the laminate with a sponge, rinse off any remaining substance with detergent.

You can use acetone, Dimexide, solvent 646, special composition “Macroflex”, “Cosmofen” to clean the tube or gun from polyurethane foam. The components of the removers do not destroy the structure of the laminate, but they should not be used for cleaning plastic or siding.

Dimexide

Dimexide is a very common pharmaceutical product that allows you to remove stains from construction foam from almost any clothing.

Dimexide as a solvent

The advantage of this product is its neutrality to various materials, which allows it to be used even on delicate fabrics and natural wood. In this case, dimexide actively interacts with dried foam, completely destroying it in a matter of minutes.

The method does not always allow you to completely remove all stains from professional polyurethane foam, because it has increased resistance to temperature changes and chemical exposure. However, it will help you get rid of common household items very quickly.

It is very simple to use - just moisten a clean cloth or piece of cotton wool with the liquid and apply it to the stain. Although the substance is relatively safe for human skin, its contact can cause unpleasant irritation in exceptional cases. After the foam has been destroyed, it can be washed off with regular running water from the clothing fabric, and the item itself can be washed in the usual way.

Aerosols, gasoline and white spirit

Cleaning linoleum or plastic is not particularly difficult

However, it is important to know how to remove construction foam from clothing. Cleaning fabric is a more complex process, so be mentally prepared for the fact that the item will have to be written off

However, we recommend that you do not give up right away and try one or more methods. Stop by a hardware or hardware store and purchase a suitable aerosol product. Before starting treatment, you should carefully remove any remaining dried substance. To do this, take a sharp object and try to clean the stained fabric as much as possible. Then you can move on to working with the aerosol.

Initially, we test the composition on an inconspicuous area. Make sure that the material is not deformed due to exposure to the aerosol and that the paint does not suffer. If the composition is safe, apply it to the problem area, after half an hour, rinse the material under the tap and wash it using a highly active powder. Often one time is not enough and the contamination remains noticeable. In this case, carry out the processing again. For other cleaning methods, use refined gasoline or white spirit. This way, the clothes will be cleaned more carefully, but the effectiveness of the method is noticeably weaker. Just put a little solvent on a cotton swab and apply it to the stained area. When finished cleaning, apply stain remover to the item and wash.
