I think I won't be wrong if I say that permanent marker stains are some of the most difficult to remove of all. This effect is achieved due to the fact that they contain indelible and waterproof ink. It is precisely because of this that ordinary washing in a machine or by hand will not only not remove the stain, but also, on the contrary, can lead to even more serious consequences by becoming ingrained into the material. If you find a permanent marker stain on your clothing, immediately begin cleaning and removing it. It is possible to remove a stain normally only while it is fresh. Although here a lot still depends on both the fabric itself and the marker (different manufacturers use different chemical components of the ink for filling). Here are a few methods I know that can help remove permanent marker stains. All of them have already been successfully used to remove marker marks from fabric, furniture or clothing. Sometimes one method can help and you will have to use a combination of several.
Water based marker
These types of stains are the easiest to remove. Let's look at the main methods:
Dish detergent
Apply the mixture to the contaminated area and wait until it dries. After this, the item can be washed in the usual way.
Toothpaste
Works great on marker marks. White paste is recommended for use on light-colored items. Squeeze it onto the stained area of clothing and wait 30 minutes until the mixture is absorbed. Then wash the product by hand or in a washing machine.
Salt
It is an indispensable assistant in the fight against various stains. Pour a glass of salt into a container of water and soak the product in it. After an hour, rinse the item in warm water.
Choice of product
Store shelves are bursting with an abundance of household chemicals. Let's look at how to wash felt-tip pens from clothes.
Soap
A simple and effective remedy. Wet the area of contamination with water. Gently rub in a little lye. Let stand for a quarter of an hour and rinse.
Alcohol-containing compounds
You can use any alcoholic drink that has a high alcohol content.
Lay out paper napkins. Place the soiled item face down on the paper. We moisten the cotton wool or cotton pad with a suitable composition and clean the marker with blotting movements. Let it dry, then wash the item using simple laundry soap.

Solvent
We use white spirit, previously diluted with water.
Place the item with the stain on a table covered with oilcloth. Use a clean foam sponge, well moistened with solvent, to treat the area of contamination.
Ammonia
To remove a felt-tip pen stain from clothes with ammonia, mix 50 ml of an alcohol-containing substance and 25 grams of baking powder in a suitable container.
Distribute the mushy mass evenly over the stain and leave until it cools completely. Then remove with a soft bristle brush.
Hydrogen peroxide
We soak the cotton wool with a pharmaceutical disinfectant and blot it with gentle movements until the stain disappears. We wash the thing.
Dishwashing liquid
We dilute the detergent with water, foam it well, soak the dirty item, and wash it.
Hair fixation spray
Place a cloth napkin under your clothes. Apply varnish to the stain and begin to scrub with cotton wool. Immediately wash the item with laundry soap.
Remember that you cannot let the varnish dry, otherwise it will not remove the stain, but, on the contrary, will fix it.
Table vinegar
Wet the stain with acid and carefully remove it with a sponge. To eliminate unpleasant odors, we use scented laundry detergents.
Baking soda
Apply by adding vinegar. First apply the acid to the stain and sprinkle baking soda on top. A chemical reaction removes the stain.
Vegetable oil
Wet the dirt with a small amount of oil, leave for 3-5 hours, rinse with cool water.
Toothpaste
We use pasta without additives. Squeeze a little toothpaste onto a foam sponge. After application, leave for 1-2 minutes. Carefully remove with a simple cotton pad.
Napkins or paper towels
If a stain is placed before our eyes, we react instantly. To prevent the coloring agent of the felt-tip pen from saturating the product, place a paper napkin on and under the stain. In this case, the ink will remain on the paper, not the fabric.
Cotton fabric
Similar to paper napkins, you can use pure natural material. We place it under the front side of the product.

Toothbrush
There is no suitable napkin, foam sponge or cotton wool - you can use a simple toothbrush. The lint will quickly and effectively remove dirt.
Stain removers
Special stain removers will help remove dirt. They can be purchased at hardware stores. Antipyatin, Vanish, and BOS are considered good remedies.
Permanent marker
Such stains eat into the fabric very strongly and are difficult to remove. To remove them, you need to arm yourself with powerful tools:
Vinegar and soda
This product also corrodes fabric dyes, so it can only be used on white items. Mix the components in equal quantities and apply to the contaminated area. Wait 15 minutes for the reaction to subside. After this, remove the composition from the stain with a brush or napkin and wash the product.
Refined gasoline
Capable of coping with the heaviest stains. But keep in mind that this method is not suitable for things made of synthetic material. Soak a cotton pad in gasoline and apply to the stain. After 10 minutes, wash the item.
Stain remover
Removes marker stains without ruining your favorite item. We recommend Japanese products, which can be purchased in departments with household chemicals. Apply the stain remover to the problem area and leave for 15 minutes, then rinse. Wash the item of clothing in the washing machine, adding a little more detergent.
Rescue of colored clothes
It is very difficult to remove dyes from fabric. Things are most difficult with black markers and richly colored clothing. If you clean incorrectly, you can smear the stain and ruin the paint.
Therefore, to clean colored items, they use specialized chemicals that are intended for colored clothing. This is a good option, but such substances are expensive.
Washing colored clothes
A cheaper option would be tar soap. They lather colored things with it and leave the product on for half an hour. After this, you need to wash the clothes in a washing machine. This option is suitable if the base of the felt-tip pen is alcohol.

Other methods are also used:
- Apply white toothpaste to a fresh stain and wash it off with water after a while. It is not possible to clean the fabric in one go, so you will have to repeat the procedure until the ink traces are completely eliminated.
- If colored clothing is damaged by a water-based marker, then use laundry soap. For other types, removers from an office supply store are suitable. They are produced in the form of sprays or pencils. In order not to spoil the material, you need to follow the instructions.
Tooth powder for cleaning fabric
Old stains are more difficult to remove, so it is better to take action immediately after contamination.
Alcohol marker
You can remove the stain using the following means:
Vinegar
Prepare a concentrated mixture of 3 liters of water and 10 tablespoons of vinegar. Place the item of clothing in it and leave it to soak for several hours.
Hair fixation spray
It will help extract the dye from the material. Spray it on the problem area and apply a cotton pad to absorb the dirt. Repeat several times until the marks disappear.
Alcohol-containing products
Soak a cotton pad in alcohol, cologne or vodka and treat the stain. Hold the cotton swab longer so that it absorbs all the dirt. If necessary, repeat the procedure again.
Cleaning jeans from marker
Everyone knows that denim is one of the densest fabrics made from cotton fibers. Naturally, it is much more difficult to wipe off any dirt from jeans, since the dirt is absorbed into the large grooves formed as a result of the interweaving of the threads.
But despite the problematic nature of this type of fabric at first glance, any of the above products will easily remove stains left by a felt-tip pen or marker. The only caveat is that you need to make an effort to remove the marker from the fabric with a sponge so that the detergent saturates the fibers.
After carrying out the procedure for getting rid of coloring pigments, rinse off the product you use after it has washed off the marker. Finally, the clothes are washed as usual.

How to remove marker from white fabric
Light-colored items are quite easy to ruin, so you should be especially careful when removing stains from white fabric. Therefore, let's consider the safest methods:
Hydrogen peroxide 3%
The simplest and most effective remedy. It is applied to the stain using a brush. After this, the item must be washed. The product has a whitening effect and does not spoil white things.
Hydrogen peroxide is also used with soap. Generously soak a cotton swab in peroxide and scrub the contaminated fabric from the front and back sides. Replace the dirty cotton pad with a new one and repeat the procedure until the marks disappear. After this, wash the stained area with soap and rinse well.
Acetone
Useful for removing paint base. Soak a cotton swab in solvent and then wipe off the marks from the marker. Next, you should rinse the fabric in cold water.
Clearing the wallpaper from the marker
If we figured out how to remove a felt-tip pen from clothes and do it quite simply, having available means at home, then with the walls things are not so easy. The main problem lies in how to remove marks from wallpaper without harming its structure. Caution is caused by the fact that wallpaper is paper, which under the influence of water becomes limp and dissolves (with the exception of vinyl washable wallpaper).
If clothes are washed, stains are soaked with various substances, then wallpaper cannot be treated this way. The main rule is accuracy.
If your child decides to practice painting on the walls because he didn’t have enough paper, then you need to be patient.
Take hydrogen peroxide in the form of a solution and a sponge. After moistening a cloth or sponge with peroxide, lightly try to wipe off the existing patterns. Do not use force, as wet wallpaper can easily tear.
Removing marker from colored items
To avoid streaks on bright items, adopt the following methods:
Tar soap
Will cope with traces from alcohol-based markers. Thoroughly lather the contaminated area and leave the item for 30 minutes. Once the soap is absorbed, rinse the stained area under water and put the item of clothing in the wash.
Glycerol
Glycerin, which can be purchased at any pharmacy, is excellent for removing traces of alcohol markers on colored fabric. Apply the mixture to the stain and leave for 60 minutes until completely absorbed. Then take some warm water into a basin and dilute 1 tablespoon of salt in it. Wash the product in the prepared solution and rinse in clean water.
Special means
Stain removers for colored fabrics will do the job well. Just soak the product in them for 20 minutes, and then wash with powder.
Outerwear and jeans
Citric acid will help to wash outer clothing (jacket) from felt-tip pen. You can also use laundry soap and hydrogen peroxide. The first option is citric acid. It needs to be mixed with water to form a thick mass. Apply it to the stain and leave the jacket for several minutes. Then rinse off the substance with warm water and wash.
The second option is soap. Rub the stained area with greasy layers, wait 25 minutes and rinse the clothes in warm water. The third option is hydrogen peroxide. The product is applied to the stain using a cotton swab and washed off with cold water. The jacket needs to be washed.
You can clean the sheepskin coat from the felt-tip pen with detergent. To do this you need:
- Drop the product onto the stain.
- Wipe with a sponge.
- Remove with a clean cloth.
Antipyatin stain remover can cope with contamination. It is applied to a toothbrush, with which you need to wipe the felt-tip pen stain and leave it until it dries. Clean with an eraser or computer brush. Denim can be removed from felt-tip pen using acetone. The substance is applied to contaminated areas with a cotton pad. After which the item is washed with powder in the machine.
How to remove marker from different types of fabric
- To clean woolen items, prepare a paste of mustard powder and water. Apply it to the stain and wait until the composition dries. Next, wash the item.
- Turpentine will help remove marker stains from silk. Apply it to a cotton swab and treat the fabric.
- A mixture of lemon juice with milk, vinegar and borax will remove marker marks on satin.
- Velvet will be saved by orange or lemon juice. It eats away the dye well, after an hour just wash it off with water.

Washing delicate materials
You can remove a felt-tip pen stain from fabric made of natural silk or wool using mustard powder. It is diluted in warm water to a thick consistency. The resulting mass is applied to the contamination on both sides. It should dry, after which it needs to be cleaned with a brush.
You can use lemon juice. It is applied to the stain. You need to wait a few minutes until the product dissolves the paint. After which the item is washed by hand and rinsed in plenty of water.
You can get rid of felt-tip pen from silk using highly purified turpentine. A small amount of product is poured onto the dirt and wiped with a cotton pad. The item is washed with soap.
You can erase a felt-tip pen from a satin item using milk, table vinegar, borax and lemon juice. All components are mixed in equal proportions. The resulting solution is applied to the fabric and left for half an hour. Blot the stain with a clean cotton pad until it disappears completely. Wash and rinse clothes.
Citrus juice, which must first be squeezed out, will help remove the felt-tip pen from the velvet. Apply it to the stained area and leave it there for several minutes. Wash by hand using powder and soap.
An easy way to remove stains
To remove stains as effectively , you need to start dealing with ink immediately. Removing old prints will require more time and effort. To combat unfortunate marker stains, a regular towel, alcohol and cotton pads are suitable. The alcohol solution can be replaced with nail polish remover. Before removing the marker from clothing, review the procedure:
Lay out the contaminated item and cover the stained area with a towel.- Carefully pour alcohol into the damaged area and wait until the fabric is completely saturated.
- Next, you need to rub the mark with a cotton pad, pressing the towel tightly. The movement should be “driving”. This will dissolve the paint, which will “transfer” to the towel fabric and cotton swab.
- Then you should replace the colored cotton wool with clean one. After this, you can begin processing the rest of the fabric.
What to do if leather clothes are damaged
Treating stains on leather items is slightly different. It is enough to wash the product stained with a water marker using a sponge with soapy water. To remove alcohol markers, you can use vinegar, hairspray, or sunscreen. Unlike textiles, leather does not tolerate cleaning agents applied directly to it. You need to moisten, spray or squeeze the cream onto a cloth in a small amount. It is better to choose a white napkin. Then you will immediately notice if the paint starts to come off from the skin. An alternative to home remedies is a melamine sponge. After you have dealt with the dirt, be sure to treat it with a cream or special conditioner for the care of leather products.
It is better to use a white napkin
Types of permanent markers and cleaning methods
The best way to remove marks is from permanent markers made with water, chalk or oil. They can be cleaned using almost any dishwashing liquid, soap or washing powder dissolved in water.
There is one proven method for erasing an alcohol marker - alcohol-containing products, which include regular vodka. If you don’t have it in the house, you can take lotion for men or acetone.
It is useful to know how to remove a marker if it is made using paints and varnishes. Stains from it can only be removed with strong solvents. But they are not always suitable, since there is a danger of damage to the surface on which the mark remains. Solvents should not be used to clean plastic items. If the table is varnished, this method is also not suitable.
Important! Do not use abrasive pastes for cleaning. If the house has rich and expensive furniture, then it makes sense to test the effect of the cleaning agent on a small, inconspicuous piece of surface.
