Suit trousers are a classic garment that requires high-quality care. A neat appearance is achieved by high-quality washing, drying and ironing.
How to do this correctly must be clarified before starting processing. In this article we will tell you whether and how to wash suit trousers (including those with creases) in a washing machine and by hand.
What should I use to rinse woolen items?
Rinsing woolen items
- You need to rinse the wool in a large amount of water, gradually reducing the temperature.
- Use softening agents to prevent the wool from itching and the fibers from sticking together.
- To prevent things from shedding, you need to add a spoonful of wine vinegar or ammonia to the water.

How to wash by hand?
Suit trousers, which are made of delicate fabric, should be washed by hand.
Procedure:
Warm water is collected in a large container (bathtub or basin).- Pour in the washing gel in the volume indicated on the package.
- Worn areas are soaped or treated with stain remover before soaking.
- Dip the trousers into the washing solution.
- Leave them soaked for half an hour to an hour. If they are made of thick cotton or linen, then you can hold them for 2 hours.
- The trousers are washed using a non-hard brush.
- Rinse under running water. Or change the water several times for better rinsing.
- You cannot twist the item to avoid deforming it.
Washing trousers in a bathtub is more convenient than in a basin, as it provides the opportunity to straighten the trouser legs during the washing process.
Recommendations
In order to better cope with washing trousers, you should follow these recommendations:
- If there are complex stains on clothes that are difficult to remove at home, it is better to entrust cleaning to professionals.
- When washing trousers made of linen, cotton or wool, it is necessary to avoid temperature changes. Otherwise, the item may shrink.
- It is better not to tumble dry.
- Avoid contact of the soleplate of the iron with the material. In all cases, it is better to use a special material, a layer of gauze or a piece of white cotton fabric.
In order to eliminate foreign odors, it is not necessary to wash the item; it is enough to ventilate it well.
Where to begin?
How to wash trousers is a difficult question, requiring your time and some effort.
Therefore, decide right away: are you ready to wash by hand or would you prefer using a washing machine?
What to use? In order to properly wash your pants, you do not need to use advertised miracle remedies, wasting money. It is enough to use standard household products:
- washing powder or liquid gel of any brand;
- soap (both laundry and baby soap will do).
Do not use toilet soap as it may leave streaks and color marks.
Don't get excited! Compliance with the washing temperature is the key to ensuring that your pants do not lose their color and shape.
- For wool, you should choose a washing temperature of 30-35 °C.
- For corduroy – 35-40 °C.
- For flax – 55-60 °C.
- If you decide to wash artificial fabrics, then you should do it in the range of 30-40 °C.
Remember to read the tags carefully before washing. Some items are dry clean only (crossed out container icon) or hand wash only (hand washed container icon). The tag also indicates the recommended washing temperature.
Features for products with arrows
Most suit trousers have pressed creases. When washing by hand, you should try to straighten the item so that the pant legs lie freely in the bath and do not bunch up. Twisting such products is categorically unacceptable, as is spinning, which can destroy the shape of the hands.
Before putting such pants into the drum of the machine, they are carefully folded so that the arrows on both legs match. The trousers themselves must be carefully rolled up and placed in a laundry bag.
The less exposure they are exposed to, the better. When machine washing trousers with arrows, it is better to turn off the spin cycle completely.
Rules of care
Read the label before ironing your pants. At what temperature does the manufacturer recommend ironing them? Iron your trousers from the wrong side. To align the arrow, you can use a woolen thread soaked in a solution of vinegar or formic alcohol.
If ironing creates shiny areas on your trousers, this can be easily corrected. You moisten the gauze with the same vinegar solution, apply it to this place and use an iron to steam the product.
The frequency of washing should be no more than 1-2 washes per week. Limit machine washing to once; how often to hand wash items depends on the degree of soiling. It is not recommended to wash trousers together with jeans and other items made of thicker fabric.
- The washing machine jumps during the spin cycle, what should I do?
- Why does the washing machine make a lot of noise when spinning?
Removing stains
Suit trousers are an element of clothing for workers in various fields: office workers, teachers, etc. Taking into account the specifics of work and lifestyle, stains of various origins may appear on pants.
Corrector
As soon as a white drop falls on your trouser leg, you must try to neutralize the problem:
Take a napkin and blot the mark on your pants. You need to act very carefully so as not to smear the stain over an even larger area and not to drive the dye deep into the fibers.- Look at the bottle of correction fluid and read the ingredients. Depending on this, it is determined what and how to deal with the stain.
- Proceed with removal, guided by the composition of the corrector.
Stroke base | Elimination method |
Water | First, the item with the stain is soaked in a soap solution at room temperature, after which it is washed in the usual way. |
Alcohol | Eliminated by treatment with vodka or medical alcohol. After treating the stain, the item is washed. |
Complex solvent | The stain is treated with a sponge soaked in white spirit. |
Before using white spirit on a pant leg, its effect must be tested on an inconspicuous area on the inside.
Fat
If there is a greasy stain on your trousers, you can treat it with potato starch . An alternative method is to use dishwashing detergent. The affected tissue is treated with it, left for a quarter of an hour and washed.
Coffee
A mixture of:
- ammonia (1 tsp),
- glycerin (1 tbsp.),
- water (1/4 cup).
All ingredients are mixed and carefully applied to the stain with a cotton swab or sponge. After this, the trousers are put aside for 10-15 minutes.
During this time, the stain will be neutralized and the item can be washed.
Chocolate
A chocolate stain can be removed by washing the area in a saline solution (1 tbsp per liter of water). After this treatment, the item is washed completely.
Blood
It is advisable to remove the stain as quickly as possible. You can use running cold water.
Hydrogen peroxide will also help cope with the problem . To do this, treat the affected area with a sponge soaked in the solution, moving from the edges to the center. This article will tell you how to remove blood stains from fabric.
Ironing
Ironing is the final stage. After washing and drying, even low-wrinkle material needs high-quality ironing .
Depending on the type of fabric, the heating temperature of the iron sole is selected.
Pants are ironed through additional fabric, especially careful handling of creases. If they are smoothed out unevenly, it will no longer be easy to correct the situation.

What does the type of material affect?
Costumes are made from various materials. The characteristics of the product and the requirements for washing depend on the type of fabric . Velvet, for example, is designed for dry cleaning or dry cleaning at home.
Cotton and linen
Lightweight suits are made from natural linen and cotton, designed to be worn in the summer.
Trousers made from this material can be processed both manually and by machine. Read about how to wash cotton here.
Depending on the density of the material and color, such pants can withstand processing up to +60ºС , if this indicator is allowed by the manufacturer.
But it is better not to exceed the value of +40ºС, since at high temperatures slight shrinkage is possible.
Recommended modes:
- "handwash";
- "cotton"
- "delicate".
Synthetic, polyester
Synthetics and mixed fabrics with a high percentage of artificial fibers are washed on a delicate cycle or on a “synthetic” cycle. The water heating temperature is set to no more than +40ºС.
Polyester or other synthetic fabric tends to fade, so it is recommended to wash such items separately from others.
This publication will tell you how to wash polyester.
Velveteen
Corduroy fabric is sensitive to high temperatures. The optimal option for it is from +20 ºС to +30ºС. It would be better to wash these trousers by hand.
Wool, tweed
Trousers from a quality wool suit are washed on a delicate cycle or with the “wool” setting.
As a rule, such fabrics are washed at +30ºС . If you exceed this figure, the material may shrink and become deformed.
Wool and wool mixture are the main types of fabrics for sewing most high-quality men's suits of classic models.
Atlas
Wash - on delicate cycle, without drying or spinning. The fabric requires very careful handling, as it tends to be easily damaged by contact with hard surfaces, elements of sewing accessories, etc. Washing should only be done with liquid detergent.
Hand washing trousers
Tips to help you wash your trousers by hand quickly and without problems:
- You need to remove all foreign objects from your pockets: phone, wallet, cash, candy. Yes, this is an obvious tip, but sometimes even the most focused owners forget about it.
- Next, you need to fasten the zipper and, if present, all the buttons.
- The pants need to be carefully straightened so that after washing they retain their shape and the arrows do not disappear.
- It is worth paying special attention to the choice of detergent. For woolen pants, a special detergent is required; for washing other materials, it is better to use delicate laundry powder or regular laundry soap. The powder should be dissolved in a separate container, then there will be no soap stains left on the clothes.
- You can make a cleaning solution and apply it to your brush. After this, completely rub your pants. When using a liquid product or soap, you also need to apply it to the brush, and then only to the item of clothing.
- Particular care must be taken to coat the bottom of the trousers, as well as the pockets and belt. If your pants are very dirty, you should leave them for half an hour after treatment. During this time, the detergent will be absorbed into the dirt and will completely remove the dirt after washing.
- The final stage is to wash off the detergent using a shower or under running water.
- The trousers do not need to be wrung out. It is enough to hang them over the bathtub for 30 minutes to drain the water. After this, the pants can be hung in another room, on the balcony or outside. In sunny weather, the pants will dry much faster.

Dry clean only? No problem!
First, take a close look at the tag on your pants. If a crossed out container is drawn there, then such an item cannot be washed. There are two options here. If the trousers were very expensive, then do not experiment - take them to the dry cleaner. Surely your man doesn’t wear them very often, so it’s better not to take risks. The fact is that some fabrics, when in contact with water, shrink strongly, wrinkle or even tear.
If the cost of the entire suit barely exceeds the dry cleaning fee, you can try washing the item by hand in lukewarm water. You just need to do this extremely carefully.
How to dry?
Proper drying after washing will keep the item in good condition. To do this, you must follow these recommendations:
- Drying is carried out on a special trample with clamps.
- First, the trouser legs must be folded so that the arrows coincide.
- They cannot be thrown over the rope.
- It is advisable to hang wet items in a dry and well-ventilated place.
- You should not place your trousers near radiators, much less on them.
- Exposure to bright sunlight can discolor the material.
- Drying should be carried out in a vertical position.
It is advisable not to use any additional heat sources to speed up the drying of suit fabric items.
