To make a car fragrance with your own hands, you can use various materials, combining aromas in different ways. But why do we need such flavorings at all? Everything is simple here: driving safety is largely influenced by driver comfort, and a dirty interior, soaked in oil and gasoline, can hardly be considered comfortable. But why not use store-bought air fresheners? But because they often contain various chemical additives that can provoke an allergic reaction. In addition, they have a strong and persistent odor, which can cause dizziness and headaches (this is definitely unsafe).
Do-it-yourself car air freshener
What will the car fragrance smell like?
When making a fragrance for your salon, you can choose the combination of aromas yourself and adjust their intensity. To make a simple air freshener, you will need essential oil and an original figurine cut out of felt or other suitable material. Fabric soaked in the selected oil (25-30 drops is enough) will smell for about a week, after which it needs to be re-soaked.
Essential oils
Important! Do not use perfumes or perfumes to impregnate the air freshener! They have a very complex and specific composition, so it is unknown how the smell can manifest itself in a confined space, combined with natural car aromas.
Why are fragrances needed?
To make it easier for you to choose the right fragrance, we have selected all possible smells and how they affect the human body.

On a note! If you don't want or can't use essential oil, you can use coffee beans as an alternative. A small bag of coffee beans is one of the most reliable options! And it’s not surprising, because coffee not only absorbs all foreign odors, but also refreshes the air in the car showroom.
Coffee is a universal air freshener
Next, we will provide step-by-step instructions for making the simplest and most effective flavors , and at least one of the proposed options will definitely suit you!
Flavor container - which one to choose
Don't throw away empty bottles of commercial air fresheners. Perfume bottles can also always come in handy. Salt shakers with a screw-on lid are a ready-made option for flavoring.
A “yolk” made from a kinder egg, with carefully made holes, is perfect for a freshener. It can easily be hung on a mirror or on the top door handles.
Jars of mayonnaise, baby food, mustard, toothpicks, cream, food containers and even Coca-Cola cans can be used.
For decorating homemade flavors, burlap, jute, craft paper, foil, foamiran, felt, and colored paper are suitable. Everything you have at hand can be used: beads, sparkles, pebbles, shells, coffee beans, seed beads and much more.
It is advisable that the container is not large and does not interfere with driving.
Advice!
When making fragrances, give preference to plastic containers with small holes in the lid that do not break and will not stain the interior with spilled contents.
Option #1. Flavoring sachets
Fragrance sachets
These cute sachets will fill the interior of your car with amazing aromas. They can also become an original gift for friends and acquaintances!
For production you will need:
- textile;
- scissors (regular and scalloped);
- ruler;
- 15 drops of essential oil;
- duct tape;
- a glass of raw rice;
- iron.
Step 1 . To start, take your fabric and cut out a couple of small squares of the same size.
Fabric squares
Step 2 . Cut out strips (4 pieces) from adhesive tape (can be replaced with cobwebs) and place them along the edges of the wrong side of one of the squares.
The stripes are laid out along the edges of the square
Step 3 . Take the second square and place it on the wrong side. Next, carefully iron the 3 sides so that the squares are securely glued to each other.
3 sides need to be ironed. The halves must stick together securely.
Step 4 . Take rice, mix it with essential oil. Mix the ingredients very well!
Essential oil is added to rice
Step 5 . Next, pour the rice into the resulting fabric bag through the hole left.
Rice is poured into the hole
Step 6 . It's time to iron the fourth side of the square. Eventually you will seal the pouch.
Iron the fourth side of the square
Step 7 . Trim the edges of the resulting pillow using scallop scissors (give the flavoring a decorative look). This will also protect the fabric from fraying.
The edges are trimmed with scallop shears
If you decorate these scented pillows with decorative ribbon, they make the perfect gift!

The benefits and harms of essential oils
Aromatic oils are obtained from natural raw materials without the addition of dyes, synthetic and artificial components. They have a high penetrating ability, being absorbed through the pores in the skin and the olfactory organs.
Essential oils
Advice!
Before using aromatic oil in car air fresheners, test for individual tolerance by dropping a drop of oil on the crook of your elbow. If after a few hours you do not feel any discomfort or itching, feel free to use this option.
Any aromatic oils have healing properties:
- antioxidant;
- antispasmodic;
- antiseptic;
- antiviral;
- anti-inflammatory;
- affect the emotional state.
With the help of a fragrance made using essential oils, you can successfully regulate the health of various organs and systems of the body, prevent colds, inflammation, and get a boost of vigor and good mood. Many oils are aphrodesiacs and increase sexual function.
Lemon flavor is the most popular and sought after. Its fresh smell leaves no one indifferent. It will be useful for increasing immunity during flu epidemics and colds. Lemon oil lowers blood pressure, normalizes the gastrointestinal tract, regulates fat metabolism, and invigorates.
citrus tree oils have the same properties , but unlike lemon, they have a calming effect and distract attention. Therefore, citrus oils should not be overused in a car.
The aroma of coffee perfectly improves your mood and prevents you from falling asleep while driving.
Tea tree oil will help fight colds, improve immunity, increase mental activity, and help remove toxins from the body.
Geranium oil relieves headaches and heart pain, helps fight fatigue, and eliminates depression.
Bergamot oil helps with respiratory diseases, is an excellent antidepressant and aphrodesiac.
Floral oils - are very good for car "smell . All of them improve your mood and help fight stress.
Separately, it is worth noting santhal oil . It has quite a lot of durability. Its positive effect on the body is very wide - it regulates the functioning of the kidneys, gastrointestinal tract and hormonal balance. It is universal, which is said to cure all diseases. It should be remembered that santhal is a powerful aphrodesiac.
An excellent choice for flavoring are oils from coniferous trees - fir, pine, spruce, cypress, thuja. They release volatile substances - phytoncides, which successfully fight stress, have a positive effect on the respiratory system, invigorate, and have antibactericidal properties.
with valerian oil in a car, as it has a sedative and hypnotic effect and activates braking mechanisms in the brain.
Lavender oil is also a poor choice for car fragrance as it is soothing and relaxing.
Important!
Do not overuse essential oils, everything is good in moderation! For a good smell, 10-15 drops are enough.
The main disadvantage of some oils is their ability to cause allergies. The second disadvantage is that they quickly disappear. You have to periodically drip fresh oil into the “smell” or make a new one.
Option #2. Wood flavoring in the form of a maple leaf
Wood is an excellent base for a car air freshener. Not only is it very durable, but it also absorbs essential oil well and then diffuses its aromas.
Step 1 . To get started, prepare everything you need. First of all, get a suitable wooden figurine - you can carve it yourself. In our example we use a maple leaf, but a classic herringbone will also work well. In addition, prepare a bowl, a PET zip-lock bag, a brush with dense bristles, essential oil and string.
What you need for a wood scent
Step 2 . Make a hole in the figurine, thread a rope through it and tie it with several tight knots. Drip the prepared essential oil into the bowl. Then, armed with a brush, apply oil to the surface of the figurine. You can do it differently - drip oil from the flask, but this may leave oily stains.
Oil is applied with a brush
Step 3 . Next, place the figurine in a ziplock bag and leave for several hours to thoroughly saturate the wood.
Flavor in a ziplock bag
Step 4 . Hang the finished air freshener on the rearview mirror (see photo). From time to time it will be necessary to update the smell - re-treating the figurine with essential oil.

Disadvantages of purchased flavors
An unpleasant smell in a car can indicate a malfunction, come from “lost” products from the supermarket, after transporting animals, and for other reasons. Even after eliminating the source of the “aroma”, airing and dry cleaning the interior, the smell may persist for some time, being absorbed into the upholstery.
Of course, the aroma of a sea breeze, meadow grass, citrus or coffee is preferable to the smell of gas, plastic, cigarettes or animals that have marked the covers.
On a hot summer day, you can especially feel the smell of chemicals emanating from flavoring agents. This can negatively affect the body and well-being of a person who spends a lot of time driving. “Smells” emit a lot of harmful substances, since they consist of 95% petroleum products. The disadvantages also include the following points:
- distract and interfere with the view;
- small children can pull the bright “thing” into their mouth;
- Respiratory irritation may occur;
- “olfactory fatigue” occurs;
- coumarin and solvent included in the fresheners are harmful to the body;
- chemicals that get on car parts can, in extreme cases, corrode the plastic
The most dangerous commercial flavors are considered to be ordinary “Christmas trees”, especially for smokers, as they contribute to better absorption of nicotine by the body, and accordingly, smoking becomes even more harmful
Advice!
When buying a ready-made air freshener, carefully read its composition on the label! It is desirable that it does not contain fragrances or allergens.
And this is only part of the harmful properties of store-bought flavors. An alternative is homemade air fresheners. This “smell” can be changed regularly. She won't have time to get bored.
Option #3. Flavoring in the form of spice bags
Fabric bags filled with spices can also be used as an air freshener. Below are step-by-step instructions for making such a flavor.
Step 1 . Prepare everything you need, namely cotton fabric, a needle, a leather strap, thread, various essential oils and dried herbs.
Spices, cloth and other necessary materials
Step 2 . Cut a 10x25 cm rectangle from the fabric, then finish its edges with wide stitches (so that the threads do not fray).
Rectangle made of fabric
Step 3 . Fold the corners as in the photo below and iron. Do this through a fabric pad, otherwise the material may be damaged.
Corners are bent
Step 4 . Machine stitch the corners.
Bent corners are stitched
Step 5 . Fold the short side of the rectangle about 2 cm (see photo), thereby forming a tunnel for the lace. Sew the fabric. Follow the same steps with the other side.
A tunnel is formed for the lace
Step 6 . Fold the fabric in half, sew the sides of the resulting bag, but do not touch the corners.
Stitched sides
Step 7 . Thread the lace into the first tunnel using a pin. Then do the same with the second lace. To prevent the ropes from getting lost, tie the edges.
The laces need to be threaded into the tunnels
Step 8 . Fill the resulting bag with your chosen dried herb and add essential oil to enhance the scent.
Fabric bags are filled with flavorings
Step 9 . All that remains is to hang the bag on the rearview mirror.
Fabric fragrances on the rear view mirror
What fragrances are not suitable for cars and why?
Some odors can cause reactions in the body that increase the risk of an accident:
- relaxation and drowsiness (lavender, chamomile, jasmine, lily of the valley);
- overexcitement, causing you to exceed the permissible speed limit (the smell of freshly cut grass);
- feeling of fatigue or fantasies that dull attention (perfume, shaving lotion).
“Herringbone” flavoring cannot be used in a car if people smoke there, because... its microparticles, when combined with tobacco smoke, contribute to the penetration of more nicotine and tar into the body. The use of aerosols containing a lot of aldehydes, phenols, acetone, benzene, toluene, etc. is also harmful to health.
Lemon, citrus, vanillin, herbs and spices
Car fragrances are divided into 2 groups:
- Calming - lavender, vanilla, chocolate, hops, lemon balm, incense, valerian.
- Exciting - citrus fruits, musk, eucalyptus, rose, rosemary, geranium, juniper, bergamot.
Citrus fruits contribute to a surge of energy. A glass of coffee and the aroma of lemon zest or oranges will help the driver not to fall asleep while driving, and grapefruit will improve coordination. Over time, reflexes may develop that link a driver's driving behavior with the smell in his car. This will help, if necessary, to cheer up or calm down with the help of aroma. But if a smell is associated with some experience, it can cause a reaction associated with it that is not subject to consciousness, for example, aggression instead of a calm and forgiving attitude towards the mistakes of other road users.
Option number 4. Scented pillows
An alternative to classic hanging air fresheners, these pads can fit in any car interior. Making them is not difficult at all - see for yourself!
Step 1 . The pads will be filled with lavender buds, appropriate aromatic oil and round rice.
Rice, lavender buds and essential oil
Step 2 . First make the pad itself. To create it, as in the previous master class, you need to use a couple of squares of cotton fabric.
Two identical squares are cut out
Step 3 . Machine stitch the squares (see photo), leaving a small hole for turning the bag inside out and then filling it with aromatic ingredients.
Stitched squares
Step 4 . Cut off the corners so that after turning them inside out they do not deform the pillow.
Carefully cut off the corners of the square
Step 5 . Turn the finished pillow inside out. You can use a pen or pencil to help the corners turn out completely.
The stitched pad is turned inside out
Step 6 . Mix all the ingredients in a bowl (add just a few drops of essential oil).
Preparation of the aromatic mixture
Step 7 . Fill the bag with the resulting mass, then sew the left hole with hidden stitches.
Pillow filling
Step 8 . If you wish, you can make several of these pillows and then tie them together. It is also a good anti-stress: squeezing the pads in your hands will have a calming and relaxing effect.
You can make several of these pillows
Important! This pad differs from other fragrances in that it can be placed in any convenient place - for example, on the dashboard.

Gel air fresheners
Unfortunately, I didn’t find such an interesting origin story as in point one, so to the point. The form factor of such air fresheners is different. There are also Velcro, under the seats, in the cup holder, in the form of balls. Having tried several, I think that among the gel ones it is rational to consider only those that are intended for placement under the seat. The rest are needed only to take up space in the car. For myself, I explained it this way: gel fresheners smell of “volume,” that is, the more “stink,” the better.

Option #5. Flavor "Cat" made of felt
Flavor “Cat” made of felt
First, prepare everything you need, namely:
- felt;
- sea salt;
- polymer clay;
- essential oil;
- white and black acrylic paint;
- padding polyester;
- brush;
- rhinestones;
- superglue or glue gun;
- yarn;
- threads;
- scissors;
- hook;
- a needle.
What is required for production
Step 1 . Take white polymer clay and make eyes out of it. Bake in the oven, then paint the pupils with black paint. When the paint is dry, apply acrylic varnish.
First you need to make the eyes
Step 2 . Tie a chain of yarn about 10 cm long. Instead of a chain, you can use a satin ribbon or cord.
Yarn chain
Step 3 . Cut out the parts of the cat using the pattern.
Pattern of parts
Step 4 . Using an overcast stitch, sew 2 pieces of each front leg. Overcast the tail, starting slightly below the base, not reaching the base on the other side, and begin sewing to the back of the cat, as shown in the photo. Do not fill anything with padding polyester.
The details of the front legs are sewn together. The tail is sewn on. The tail is ready.
Step 5 . Sew the main parts, starting from the bottom (the fold on the back leg).
The main parts are sewn together
Step 6 . Place the front foot between the main pieces and sew it on. As is the tail.
The front leg is sewn on
Step 7 . Go to the top of the head, and there sew a loop.
The loop is sewn in. Another photo of the process
Step 8 . After that - the second paw. Stop sewing when you reach the bottom foot and fill the figure with padding polyester.

Step 9 . Overcast stitch until the very end.
The product is sheathed to the end
Step 10 . Glue the crocheted flower with rhinestones. Insert one paw into the handle of the bag, bend it and glue it to the body. If you don't know how to knit, you can use a satin ribbon bow instead of a flower. You can use felt to make a handbag. Glue the eyes.

Step 11 . Start working on the muzzle.
Let's start working on the muzzle. The nose is embroidered. Another photo of the process. A smile is created.
Step 12 . Make a knot on your nose. Pull out the needle and thread from the side. Cut the thread at the very base.
We make a knot on the nose. The thread is cut off.
Step 13 . Place a bag of sea salt pre-soaked with essential oil in your purse. Instead of salt, you can use a piece of cotton wool. That's it, the fragrance is ready, you can safely hang it in the car!

The second large group of flavors are bottles
They differ from each other in the method of fastening. Some are installed on a self-adhesive lining on the dashboard, others are attached with a special clothespin to the air deflector grille, and still others (solid) are hidden under the seat. True, in the latter case, it is no longer a bottle with gel or liquid, but a box with fragrant balls (or cubes).
Some of the liquid flavors can be transferred to the “do-it-yourself flavor” class. But, firstly, choose collapsible, and secondly, reliable designs.
Collapsible - it’s clear why: so that when the container is empty, then it can be filled with some new fresh smell
In terms of reliability, pay attention to the mounting methods. Other plastic latches-clothespins do not hold at all
This happened to me once: the car jumped on a low curb and the bottle jumped off the mount. But I didn’t even notice.
The stench, that is, excuse me, the fragrance, disappeared from my salon for several weeks.
A bestseller (but not one of the cheapest) in the air freshener category is a product from Ambi Pur called Ambi Pur Car.
Methods for attaching car air fresheners can be very different.
As for the duration of action, microgranules of solid flavors retain (or neutralize) the odor from six months to eight months, and the cheapest products based on plants or chemicals “work” for only one to two months, depending on the time of year and the intensity of use of the car.
Option number 6. Do-it-yourself gel fragrance for the car
Do-it-yourself gel car fragrance
A relatively inexpensive air freshener, for the manufacture of which you will need:
- jars holding half a glass of liquid. Our example uses 4 baby food jars;
- food coloring;
- essential oil;
- water (2 separate cups);
- sachets of unflavored gelatin (4 pcs. 30 g each);
- salt (1 tbsp);
- kitchen utensils - saucepan, spoons, whisk.
What you might need
Step 1 . Pour a few drops of dye into each jar.
Jars of dye
Step 2 . Next, add at least 1 tsp to each jar. essential oil (you can add more for a stronger aroma).
Adding essential oil Result of work
Step 3 . Bring one cup of water to a boil.
A cup of water is brought to a boil
Step 4 . Add all the gelatin to the boiling water, stir until it is completely dissolved.
Gelatin is added to the water. Mix thoroughly.
Step 5 . Once the gelatin has dissolved, pour in the second cup of water, then add the salt.
The second cup of water is poured out. Salt is added.
Step 6 . When the salt has dissolved, remove the pan from the stove and pour the resulting liquid into jars. Try to do this in a few minutes.
Liquid is poured into jars
On a note! It is better to stir the gelatin with a plastic spoon (but do it quickly), although in our example we used a broken clothespin.
Use a broken clothespin.
After 24 hours, the fragrant gel mixture will harden. That's it, the flavor is ready! One such jar should be enough for 4-6 weeks.
It will take a day for it to harden. Ready-made gel flavors. One of these jars will last for 4-6 weeks.
Ready-made flavoring or homemade?
If we talk about which flavor is better to choose, then, of course, you should give preference to “stinkers” made yourself. There are several explanations for this. Firstly, store-bought versions always contain a large amount of chemicals. Daily inhalation of such components can negatively affect health, especially if the car owner is allergic. Moreover, according to studies, ready-made “stinkers” contain so-called phthalates. These substances disrupt the functioning of the endocrine and reproductive systems.
Secondly, it has long been proven that natural essential oils have a positive effect not only on human health (help with allergies, improve heart function, stimulate brain activity and much more), but also on his psyche.
Thirdly, thanks to the huge selection of essential oils, you can create any scent yourself.
Option No. 7. Car flavor from an old lighter
Another option for making a freshener based on essential oils. Below are step-by-step photos of the process.
Essential oils are also used here
At first the author used melon essential oil, but since the smell was quite weak, he also added sandalwood oil.
The lighter will serve as a housing for the fragrance
Cotton wool was used as a base from which the oil would evaporate.
Cotton wool will be used as a base
The author disassembled the lighter, leaving only the necessary parts.
Disassembled lighter
The first layer of cotton wool (soaked with a few drops) was laid on the bottom, with the wetted side down. The fact is that at the bottom of the case there were holes from the filling valve and screw. It is through these holes that the smell will escape.
The first layer of wool has been laid
Next, two more layers of cotton wool were laid, but with the oil side facing up. You should not pack the cotton too tightly - there should be room for evaporation. About 5-7 mm to the top edge were left empty to allow oil vapors to accumulate.
Two more layers are laid. Spacer in the form of a spring so that the lid does not ring while driving.
This freshener looks inconspicuous, but it smells very tasty!
The finished flavor looks inconspicuous
Aroma candle
A scented candle consists of a base (most often paraffin) and essential oils. Many will begin to say that using an aroma candle as a freshener will be harmful, because paraffin is obtained from oil.
But the candle does not have to be lit. Need to:
- Choose your favorite scented candle.
- Cut it into small pieces, or grate it.
- Find a suitable small container.
- Place the candle pieces into it.
- Decorate the container, for example, by wrapping it with twine.
The best places to install the air freshener in the cabin
If the fragrance is large or is in a glass container, then it is better not to hang it on the rear view mirror or glass - they may break. During driving, the contents may be bumped and spilled. The glare from a glass container can also disturb you, and therefore you should use other materials instead of glass.
Where is the best place to install the fragrance?
Bags, soft cubes, “rosary beads” made of aromatic beads - these are suitable options for the rear view mirror .
Pillows and bags can be placed in the cabin, in the pockets of the covers, near the slot for blowing glass .
Fragrance bag in the salon
It is better to place containers under the seats, in the glove compartment, in door pockets, in special recesses for cups .
Scented candles
If you have scented candles lying around at home, they can also be used to combat car odor. Be sure to use a cup holder for candles - this will ensure safety. Light a candle with your favorite scent and enjoy the pleasant atmosphere inside your car.

So. How to make your own product for air freshening in a vehicle?
In fact, everything is quite simple - the technology is simple, and the materials for manufacturing are quite accessible. It must be said that the basis of home-made aromas are essential natural oils, which are sold in abundance in pharmacies, as well as spices and herbs.
By and large, you can just pick wildflowers and put them in the salon. The atmosphere will be amazing, but short-lived. If we talk about specific tips, we can offer a number of options that differ in their consistency: solid, liquid or gel.
Classic hydrogel fragrance
There are countless types of homemade scented sachets for cars. You can sew the bag yourself from any natural fabric (linen, cotton, silk). It’s even easier to knit or crochet.
You will need flour and soda in equal proportions, any vegetable oil, enough water for kneading and aroma oil.
On a note. It is worth paying attention to fir aroma oil. It is useful in many ways: it removes odors in the car, destroys harmful bacteria in the air and repels insects. A person who inhales such an aroma becomes more resistant to a stressful situation.
After some time, the scents will fade and you may want to try another scent. Never try to create a fragrance that can overpower other odors in the cabin. First of all, strong aromas can harm you, since you will not be able to sense a car malfunction by smell, for example, if exhaust gases penetrate into the cabin. Know a sense of proportion.
The scent lasts for 30 days. In addition, a bag hanging near the windshield will perfectly absorb condensation and help it dry quickly in rainy weather.
It is unlikely that you will be able to choose a particular scent at the pharmacy that you like more than others. You will probably buy at least five bottles. This way you can make a flavor that suits your experiments. If you didn’t throw away containers from previously purchased store-bought “smells,” you can use the casing. Push foam rubber or cotton wool into it and drop a couple of drops of bergamot - this way you will get a boost of energy every morning in the interior of your car.
For coffee lovers
You can't think of anything better than the natural smell of coffee. It invigorates and helps the driver concentrate. To make a coffee air freshener for your car with your own hands, it is better to take burlap. Yes, ordinary, natural, rough. A small bag of it will look so natural and soulful!
It can be made by hand or the edges can be sewn on a machine. Turn the product inside out and iron it, fixing the shape. You can choose decorations for such a flavor at your discretion: letters, stripes, buttons, or coffee beans glued with a gun. The finished bag is tied in the right place in the car. You can simply put it somewhere or attach it to the trim. It will exude a pleasant coffee aroma from anywhere.
