Today we will choose the best carpet cleaning product, find out the nuances of choice, and listen to users’ opinions about this or that cleaning product.
Carpets, rugs and rugs make any room cozy, protect from drafts and give warmth to your feet. But thousands of fluffy fibers perfectly absorb dirt and unpleasant odors. The larger and heavier the product, the more difficult it is to clean. What to do? How to clean a carpet at home?
Types of carpet cleaning products
Currently, there are many detergent compositions for cleaning carpets. All of them must meet the following requirements :
- penetrate deeply into the carpet pile and efficiently clean it of dirt;
- act quickly and efficiently;
- It is easy to clean off the coating after use using a vacuum cleaner;
- have hypoallergenic properties;
- do not contain bleach or other aggressive substances;
- have a pleasant, unobtrusive aroma or no smell at all.
Powder
The dry mixture is effective for eliminating the consequences of freshly spilled drinks, liquid food, biological contamination from animals and humans. The composition acts quickly and softly, does not discolor the coating, and does not cause shrinkage.
Mode of application:
- Coat the stain generously with powder;
- wait until the liquid is absorbed;
- remove residues with a vacuum cleaner or stiff brush;
- if a wet spot remains, repeat the procedure.
Among the disadvantages, we can note the inconvenience of use for carpets with long pile - to remove all particles you need a powerful vacuum cleaner.
Shampoo
Carpet shampoo has a concentrated composition, foams well, and does not require rinsing. It can be used for manual cleaning or “charged” into a washing vacuum cleaner. The product dries quickly, and residues can be easily removed with a regular vacuum cleaner.
The shampoo copes well with fresh stains and light dirt, refreshes color, and eliminates unpleasant odors. Unfortunately, it cannot control old stains.
Mode of application:
- carefully read the manufacturer's recommendations on the label;
- according to the instructions, dilute a certain amount of shampoo in water;
- Apply the resulting foam to the coating, being careful not to over-wet it;
- wait until it dries completely;
- After the specified time, collect the residue using a vacuum cleaner.
An incorrectly prepared mixture or careless application can result in excessive wetting of the carpet.

Spray stain remover
A ready-to-use product that does not need to be diluted. Packaged in bottles with spray dispensers. It even copes with old stains and heavy dirt.
Mode of application:
- applied pointwise to the stain;
- after a certain time (specified in the operating instructions), the stain is treated with a soft brush;
- The remaining product is wiped off first with a wet cloth, and then the wet area must be blotted with a dry cloth.
The spray is quite effective, but it can only be used for a limited surface; it cannot treat the entire carpet. Please note that it is only used for carpets that are not susceptible to wet cleaning.
Liquid
The lion's share of carpet cleaners come in liquid form. The liquid concentrate dissolves quickly, is easy to apply and just as easily removed from the surface, effectively removes dirt and restores color.
To clean heavily soiled coatings, the procedure must be carried out several times.
Foam
Ready-made foam product. It is packaged in convenient containers, which you just need to shake to create foam. Apply directly to the stain using a spray bottle.
The foam does not flow, does not “spread” over a clean surface, and quickly and effectively absorbs dirt without leaving behind streaks.
Mode of application:
- Shake the container vigorously several times;
- apply foam to the stain;
- wait the required time (indicated on the label);
- remove residues with a vacuum cleaner.
Foam will not overcome old and deeply ingrained stains.

What to look for when choosing
Is your carpet in need of a “spring cleaning” for a long time, but you don’t know which product to choose from the huge variety of products? Then the advice of experienced housewives on the selection criteria will help you not to get confused and purchase exactly the cleaner that you need.
Composition of the product
Please read the label carefully before purchasing. It always indicates what material the product is suitable for, what contaminants it removes, what length of pile it is intended for, and how safe it is for humans and pets.
A cleaning product for carpets and upholstery must be selected for a specific type of fabric.
- For wool fibers, special products are required, which are marked “For wool products.” They do not contain bleaching components and have a neutral composition. It is recommended to use products that form a thick foam.
- For viscose, it is preferable to purchase a cleaner with a neutral detergent composition - powder or foam. Try not to rub this coating with hard brushes or get it wet.
- Dry cleaning products that do not contain chlorine are suitable for natural cotton and linen.
- For synthetics (polyester, polypropylene, acrylic, polyamide and others), you can purchase absolutely any product for both dry and wet cleaning.
- Jute (a natural plant fiber) is best cleaned with specialized products marked “For jute carpets.” They do not contain chlorine or alkali.
- For products made from natural fur (animal skins), only dry powder or folk remedies are used - cleaning with vinegar, glycerin, hydrogen peroxide, ammonia.
It is better not to clean handmade carpets with store-bought products - they will ruin them. Take them to a dry cleaner, where the items will be dry cleaned using hydrocarbon solvents.

No matter how safe the composition may seem to you, test it on an inconspicuous area of the carpet. It is not uncommon for carpet fibers to fade, shrink, or become damaged in texture.
If you choose a product for daily preventative cleaning, then it should have a minimum concentration of active substances in order to reduce its effect on the brightness of the colors and not damage the fiber structure. But to remove stains, the cleaner, on the contrary, must have an aggressive composition.
Any type of household chemicals is unsafe, so use carpet cleaners with caution if there are small children and animals in the house. Give preference to a hypoallergenic composition.
Application in washing vacuum cleaner
If you are the happy owner of a washing vacuum cleaner, then cleaning the carpet will be much easier than manually. There are many products for high-quality cleaning of carpets that penetrate deep into the pile and clean dirt of various origins.
Since the reservoir of the vacuum cleaner is small, such shampoos should not form a lot of foam, otherwise it will come out and can lead to a short circuit. To reduce foaming, special formulations are used that work in conjunction with shampoos.
Shampoos and foam neutralizers for washing vacuum cleaners can be purchased at large hardware stores or ordered online. Regular vacuum cleaner products are not suitable.
Smell
The product should leave behind a pleasant, unobtrusive aroma, or better yet have no scent at all. Unfortunately, most cleaners cannot boast of this, so after cleaning the room must be well ventilated.
Removing stains
If you want to remove a stain from your carpet, you don't have to clean it completely. It is enough to buy a stain remover spray, apply it precisely to the coating, rub it with a brush and remove the remaining product with a napkin.
As a rule, such compositions require subsequent rinsing, so be careful with carpets that are afraid of moisture.
Is rinsing necessary?
The most popular are products that need to be applied to the carpet, wait the required time, and then vacuum.
But some cleaners, for example, stain removers, contain aggressive components that must be washed off.
Classification of carpet cleaning products
There is a wide variety of household chemicals for cleaning carpets. Carpets require careful handling. Therefore, you should find a product for a certain type of pile and apply it correctly.
- Dry powders – used for dry cleaning. This is considered the best option for cleaning carpet pile. The advantage is that it is gentle on the coating and at the same time provides deep cleaning. Distribute the dry foam powder over the carpet. It absorbs all dust, debris and foreign odors. After a period of time, the powder is removed with a vacuum cleaner. This method of cleaning carpets is often used. The carpet cleaning product in powder form can also be used with water.
- Liquid products - require initial testing. A very popular option for carpet cleaning. This includes shampoos and liquid products. They carry out wet cleaning, remove stains, and restore the brightness of coating colors. The advantages of liquid cleaning agents are that they dissolve quickly, are easy to use, and can be quickly removed from the surface.
Natural carpets require careful adherence to the instructions for their care. Wet cleaning is carried out carefully, observing all requirements. Otherwise, the carpet may warp or fungus may appear.
- Foam - used to remove heavy dirt. Foams require testing before cleaning the product. Its use is characterized by a small volume of water. Cleaning is completed quickly and is not difficult.
- Sprays are often used to remove local stains. They gained popularity due to ease of use.

How to clean a carpet at home
How to clean a carpet at home if you forgot to buy Vanish for carpets or simply do not accept household chemicals and prefer environmentally friendly cleaning methods? You can use soda, vinegar and other available materials that are found in every home.
Photo: https://www.flickr.com/photos/cogdog/32475117634/
Folk recipes
- Vinegar. Helps refresh color, removes gray deposits and organic impurities. Dilute two tablespoons of nine percent vinegar in a liter of water. Moisten a brush with vinegar and run it over the entire surface. Unfortunately, this method does not work for severe contamination.
- Soda and salt. They perfectly absorb odors and remove light stains. Mix a pack of soda with the same amount of fine “Extra” salt. Sprinkle the powder generously over the surface of the coating and leave for half an hour. Soak a brush or broom in warm water and sweep the mixture from the carpet, let it dry, and then vacuum up the residue.
- Snow. An old grandmother’s method that will help you get rid of dust efficiently, refresh the color and nourish the fibers with freshness. Lay the rug face down on the untouched deep snow. Throw more snow on top and stomp on it thoroughly. Move it to a new area and do the same, but place the carpet with the pile facing up. Carefully sweep away the snow with a brush or broom. If possible, leave the rug in the cold for at least a few hours, and preferably overnight - during this time all dust mites, moths and other “living creatures” will die.
How to get rid of difficult stains
Blood . If it is fresh, it can be easily removed with a napkin and ice water. If that doesn't work, sprinkle baking soda on the stain and sprinkle with vinegar.
The old stain must first be cleaned with a dry, stiff brush, removed with a vacuum cleaner, and then treated with a soap solution. It is prepared from half a liter of cold water and a tablespoon of liquid dishwashing detergent (can be replaced with crushed brown laundry soap).
If the blood is deeply ingrained and cannot be washed off, dissolve two tablespoons of ammonia in a glass of cold water. Apply to the stain and leave for 5-10 minutes, then blot with a napkin.
Ammonia should not be used on wool carpets.
Wax . After a romantic dinner, drops of wax from burning candles got on the carpet? Wait until it hardens completely and then try to scrape it off with a table knife or regular spoon. Remove particles with a vacuum cleaner. Turn on the iron to the lowest temperature setting, place a paper napkin or towel on the wax stain, and iron. Hot wax is easily absorbed into the paper after several procedures. Don't forget to change the napkins for clean ones every time.
If you are unable to completely remove the wax, wipe the stain with alcohol, but first test on an inconspicuous area - on some fabrics alcohol discolors the fibers.
Chewing gum. Wrap a few ice cubes in cling film or a plastic bag. Place the package on the gum for a few minutes. Frozen gum can be easily scraped off with a table knife.
Urine . Do you have a puppy or kitten at home? Or a baby walking around without a diaper? Then this method will be more relevant than ever.
Blot the wet stain thoroughly with a napkin. You can make it simpler - put cat litter on it; it absorbs not only moisture, but also aromas.
Dilute vinegar in water in a ratio of one to three. Dampen the stain with the solution and then sprinkle with baking soda. You can sprinkle hydrogen peroxide diluted with water in a ratio of one to two on top. Leave the foam that appears for a couple of hours, and then collect all the particles with a damp brush.
Home remedy for carpet stains
All home remedies require manual application using a sponge or brush.
You can try to remove simple stains on carpets with homemade cleaners. For this we use:
- Soda solution (150 g per 1 bucket of warm water). The resulting suspension is sprayed over the carpet and allowed to dry for 1–2 hours, then cleaned or vacuumed
- Salt . To remove greasy stains, spread a layer of salt over the carpet and remove it after 30–40 minutes.
- A mixture of vinegar and alcohol in a ratio of 1 to 3. Best removes coffee and wine stains
- Used tea leaves . The dried contents of tea bags are scattered over the carpet to neutralize unpleasant odors.
- Lemon acid . The powder is used spot-on as a stain remover. Acid removes stains from juice, jam, preserves or tomatoes
- Ammonia mixed with washing powder . To prepare, take 20 ml of alcohol, 10 g of washing powder and dilute with water until creamy. The resulting mixture is used as a stain remover
The most effective way to clean carpet from serious stains is to take it to dry cleaning. Self-cleaning with special products is recommended to remove light stains and update the appearance of the coating. At the same time, good results during routine cleaning can be achieved with the help of homemade stain removers.
When choosing a professional detergent, you should focus on safety, efficiency and economical consumption. By following the instructions on the packaging, you can return your carpets to their original cleanliness and softness.

Useful tips
- Vacuum carpets regularly to remove dust and small organic debris. Periodically go through with a vacuum cleaner and from the wrong side.
- Dry carpet cleaning is much preferable to wet carpet cleaning, especially if you have nowhere to dry the carpet. Moisture causes an unpleasant odor and, in some cases, mold.
- Getting rid of fresh stains is much easier than old ones. Don’t delay cleaning; deal with the stain as soon as it appears.
- Do not use washing powder for cleaning. You won’t be able to wash it off properly, and it will leave a sticky surface that will attract new dirt.
- Clean viscose or wool products in dry cleaners, otherwise you risk ruining them.
- Test any products purchased in a store on an inconspicuous area - some carpets categorically do not accept chemicals.
What is the difficulty of cleaning a white carpet or rug?
The main disadvantage of any light-colored carpets is their soiling. Any stains are visible on them, and the pollutant easily stains the pile and is not always removed the first time. And if a carpet product of beige, gray, blue or other colors can be cleaned with almost any means, then the situation with a snow-white rug is more complicated.
White pile stains easily and often takes on a yellow or gray tint. The reasons for this lie in improper or insufficiently careful care, as well as in unsuitable conditions of use.
How to keep the pile white
Any stains must be removed immediately, otherwise the pollutant will penetrate deep into the pile, which will complicate cleaning.
The pile becomes dull due to accumulated dust - a white carpet needs to be vacuumed more often than any other. And still, the moment is inevitable when the snow-white pile takes on a gray tint. Then you need to take the product to the dry cleaner or use home remedies. But with regular cleaning, the need for this comes much later, and thorough cleaning once every six months or a year is enough.
The reasons for yellowing of the pile are different, and the most common are:
- exposure to direct sunlight;
- using the wrong cleaning product;
- wetness of the glue in the base of the carpet;
- the presence of wool in the pile, which when wet for a long time can give a yellow tint.
By avoiding these factors, you can delay the yellowing of the pile for a fairly long period. If this does happen, you should take the product to the dry cleaner or try to clean the white carpet at home.
