Cleaning a suspended ceiling in the kitchen: a review of means and methods

Stretch ceilings have become a popular attribute of home interiors. With its help, owners implement bold design solutions by choosing the desired color and material structure.

The main advantage remains an unchanged appearance, when over time the ceiling does not fade or undergo deformation. Caring for the linen depends on the room, determining the choice of cleaning product and cleaning method. The information below will tell readers how to wash the suspended ceiling in the kitchen from grease and give practical recommendations for caring for PVC and fabric surfaces.

Causes of pollution

PVC film, like any material, is subject to contamination and a greasy coating mixed with dust or soot forms on its surface, which gives the ceiling an unaesthetic appearance. Rusty streaks in damp rooms or after flooding by neighbors above add to the problem.

You can wash the suspended ceiling with a soft sponge

Many people confuse yellowness from dirt with fading of the undertone. This is a mistake, since PVC film is resistant to fading, and if the owner of the apartment notices yellowish spots or stains, if the ceiling as a whole has changed its color, it’s time to start general cleaning.

What are the features and specifics of suspended ceilings?

The canvas that is stretched in the upper part of the room is a material unique in its technological and physical properties. It simultaneously combines high technological characteristics, practicality and aesthetics. New stretch ceilings installed in the hall or living room always look great. They can be glossy or matte. In both cases, the surface of the PVC film is even and smooth.

Note: there is a misconception that film stretched onto ceilings does not require maintenance. Like any other surface mounted on the top, the film is subject to natural physical contamination during operation.

Dust and human waste products, along with fumes, settle on the surface of the ceiling, over time depriving it of its freshness and attractiveness. The situation with suspended ceilings looks similar. This is especially true in situations when we are dealing with glossy ceiling tension structures. Caring for matte stretch ceilings is much easier than with a glossy texture. The reason for such attention to this type of tension systems is that the glossy texture of PVC film is more susceptible to contamination and, accordingly, this texture requires special cleaning and washing technology.

Polyvinyl chloride film or polyester fabric is a special finishing material. Due to its strength and resistance to external influences, the fabric stretched in the upper part of the premises can serve for a long time. Under one condition, that care is carried out on time and correctly.

Types of stretch fabrics and features of their care

PVC films for ceilings are divided into three groups according to texture:

  1. matte;
  2. satin;
  3. glossy.

When choosing a material, apartment owners are guided by their wishes, budget and practicality of using a particular texture. For example, it is better to use glossy materials for the kitchen. The glossy surface is not so susceptible to contamination with grease and soot. The slippery coating of the glossy ceiling does not allow dirt to be absorbed and eat into the fibers.

Glossy ceiling hides dust and dirt

Of the fundamental differences in caring for glossy and matte ceilings, only one can be highlighted: gloss requires additional polishing with alcohol or vinegar after washing to preserve its original shine and is less resistant to scratches. This must be taken into account when choosing rags for ceiling care.

Types of suspended ceilings for the kitchen

The design of the solution is simple: a special profile is fixed to the wall, and the canvas is fixed in it. How to clean a suspended ceiling in the kitchen depends on the nature of the material. There are 2 types:

  • fabric – polyester knitted fabric. This option has many advantages, but, alas, is not waterproof. It is impossible to wash a stretch ceiling made of fabric - only dry cleaning is allowed;
  • film - polyvinyl chloride film, absolutely waterproof, lightweight, extremely wear-resistant. Is it possible to wash suspended ceilings of this kind? Of course, yes, and this is easy to do: the film is not porous, does not absorb soot and dirt, and can be washed with one swipe of a sponge.

Film stretch fabric is an unusually decorative option. And it’s not only about the huge variety of colors and patterns, but also textures. It is the latter that determines the features of caring for the kitchen ceiling:

  • Matte film is the easiest to care for. You can wash it with water, soap solution, and cleaning products with the exception of abrasive ones. This fabric does not reflect light, perfectly conveys colors and has great wear resistance; satin ceiling - does not reflect light, but makes the colors more intense and bright. We wash and clean it, just like matte film;
  • Glossy film is more difficult to maintain. This surface reflects light and creates shine - from pearl to mirror. You need to wash it carefully, since glossy material is much easier to damage than matte materials;
  • the velvet texture creates the impression of a fleecy ceiling surface. It is advisable to clean it only with a vacuum cleaner and dry cleaning agents.

Soap solution for easy cleaning

For quick cleaning of matte and glossy polymer ceilings, a soap solution will be a universal remedy. A solution of powder or laundry soap in warm water easily removes dust and soot from glossy and matte PVC.

Soap solution is the best solution for stretch ceilings

The exception is fabric bases, on which stains form, and such cleaning leads to darkening of the stains. Soap solution does not always successfully remove grease. To remove such plaque, you should add baking soda to the solution.

How to clean matte, satin and fabric stretch ceilings?

  • The safest way to clean fabric ceilings is by dry cleaning (with soft flannel/microfiber rags). It is permissible to use the vacuum cleaner in low suction power mode (caution). In this case, the nozzle should be kept at a distance of 3-5 centimeters from the canvas. If you need to clean stains and dirt, you can use the same weak soap solution, treat the contaminated area with it and leave for 5 minutes. The main thing is not to overdo it with friction, otherwise marks may remain.

You can also wash the fabric ceiling using a special product as in the photo below.

  • Satin ceilings can be washed in the same way as glossy ones (see instructions in the first chapter).
  • Matte ceilings can be cleaned in the same way as glossy or satin ceilings. However, they cannot be cleaned with alcohol-based products (including ammonia).

Solutions for cleaning fabric

The characteristics of the fabric surface make it difficult to clean, but there are several ways to clean a fabric stretch ceiling, even if it is installed in the kitchen. The solution for cleaning such a surface should not only dissolve dirt, but also absorb it without streaks. A common and affordable option is to combine water and soda ash with table salt. Baking soda breaks down contaminants, and saline solution absorbs it.

Fabric ceilings require more careful care

An alternative to this composition is a solution of ammonia, which is used to soak a soft sponge and carefully wipe the surface.

Treating the surface with both solutions requires additional cleaning with a dry and soft cloth that absorbs the remaining solution and dirt.

What will be useful for work?

To wash a suspended ceiling, prepare the following materials and tools:

  1. A soft sponge or lint-free cloth;
  2. A soft type of napkin, for example, made of microfiber, suede, other fabric with the same properties will do;
  3. Stepladder or small ladder;
  4. A vacuum cleaner with a soft attachment, which is recommended to be used carefully;
  5. A detergent that does not contain abrasive particles.

Care is represented by two types of cleaning – dry and wet. Each of them requires its own product to clean the canvas. Wet means applying special cleaning solutions to the fabric. If desired, they can also be made at home. It is important to choose a soft material to avoid scratching or tearing the surface.

Dry cleaning is based on wiping the ceiling with soft circular movements. the fabric is selected according to the same principle. Pay attention to special products with an antistatic effect. It lasts for a long time, which makes maintenance easier, and the ceiling looks clean and tidy.

Cloth and ceiling cleaner

Alcohol solutions for gloss

Proper cleaning of a glossy ceiling involves not only removing dirt, but also restoring its shine. The main problem with a glossy surface is the strong appearance of stains, especially after cleaning with soapy solutions. The following products will allow you to easily and without extra effort get rid of various types of contaminants and restore the original shine to smooth PVC:

  1. Glass cleaning mixtures. Just like on a glass surface, spray the product onto the ceiling and use special microfiber cloths to wipe off the dirt and polish the surface.
  2. A home remedy for cleaning glossy canvas can be made from ammonia and purified water. Moisten a soft cloth with the solution or spray it through a spray bottle in places of contamination and wipe the cloth.

Important! To prepare the solution, use only purified water (you can buy bottled water), since hard water forms salt stains, which are clearly visible on a shiny surface.

How to wash a suspended ceiling at home - a universal method

At home, manufacturers recommend washing suspended ceilings only with special products or soapy water. In most cases, such cleaning is enough to clean the canvas from dust, construction dirt, greasy or nicotine deposits, and soot. In this step-by-step instructions, we will tell you about the universal and only cleaning method that is approved by manufacturers of tensile structures.

You will need:

  • A regular mop with bristles, or better yet, a flat mop;
  • Clean and soft microfiber or flannel rags (2 pcs.);
  • A bowl of warm water (but not hot!);
  • Spray bottle (optional);
  • Liquid soap;
  • For greater convenience, it is advisable to prepare a stepladder.

Our advice: The easiest way to wash ceilings is with a mop with a moving platform and a microfiber attachment, which is also called a telescopic mop (pictured). The price of such a mop is quite high - from 2 thousand rubles, but it is light, nimble and already has a nozzle that can be washed several times.

Washing a stretch ceiling with a telescopic mop is more convenient and safer for the canvas than any other

Step 1. Dilute a weak soap solution of liquid soap and warm water in a basin. If you use a spray bottle, then the following proportions are suitable: for 1 glass of water, 4 drops of liquid soap.

Step 2. Place a cloth soaked in soapy water (but not hot!) on the mop and start cleaning. Start washing the stretch ceiling with a mop, moving from one corner to another, systematically moving through the entire canvas. If the ceiling area is very large, then you can divide it into several sections, each of which should be washed moving from the walls to the center of the canvas.

  • If you use a spray bottle, you can apply the product evenly to one section, then wash it by hand or by mopping with a clean, damp cloth. Next you should move to another area. The principle of movement of the mop is still the same - from the walls to the center of the canvas.

It’s good if you have a stepladder - it will allow you to manually remove local stains on the canvas, operate the mop more deftly and see the dirt better. A stepladder is also needed if the ceilings are high.

  • Avoid applying too much pressure to avoid rubbing dirt or dust into the blade and damaging it. Particular care must be taken when washing suspended ceilings installed close to the base (for example, at a level of 3-4 cm). In the latter case, it is better not to use a mop at all, but to wash the ceiling with your hands, climbing on a stepladder.

Washing suspended ceilings with your hands is safer than with a mop

Step 3. If necessary, use one of the home or special products described in the next chapter to remove complex stains.

Step 4. If you wish, you can play it safe from the appearance of streaks and once again go over the canvas with a mop with a clean, damp cloth.

Step 5. After finishing cleaning, be sure to wipe the stretch ceiling with a clean, dry cloth to get rid of any remaining product, and most importantly, stains. Essentially, this stage is polishing the canvas.

Key rules:

  • To wash suspended ceilings, it is permissible to use only soft, lint-free rags (microfiber or flannel). Brushes and hard sponges should not be used.
  • It is strictly forbidden to use cleaning products for washing ceilings that contain: acetone, alkalis, solvents, chlorine, abrasive particles, as well as any washing powders, laundry soap, mustard, soda.
  • Tensile structures cannot be washed with hot water.
  • If you plan to wash the ceiling by hand, then before you start cleaning, be sure to remove the rings (especially those with stones) so as not to damage the film.

How to remove grease stains

It is not always possible to simply wash the suspended ceiling and get rid of greasy stains in the kitchen. Severe stains require a special approach and exposure to cleaning products for some time. It is important to remember that friction and exposure to abrasive surfaces are contraindicated for soft ceiling fabric.

One effective remedy for greasy stains is an acetone-free stain remover for synthetic fabrics. Acetone damages PVC and leaves stains.

The process of washing a stretch ceiling

If you don’t have such a product on hand, you can mix baking soda with hydrogen peroxide until a soft mushy mass is obtained. It is applied to stubborn grease stains and left for a while so that the substances react with each other and the fat particles begin to break down. The required period of time must be at least an hour. Next, the pulp is washed off along with the contamination with warm water.

You can also degrease the ceiling surface using calcined salt if we are talking about a matte canvas. For a glossy ceiling, soda is detrimental, as it deprives it of its shine. To prepare the solution you need to dilute 60 g. soda in a liter of warm water.

Another way to clean a suspended ceiling in the kitchen and do it carefully and effectively is to use a household steam generator.

When exposed to hot steam, the plaque softens and can be easily removed with a warm soapy solution or even just warm water.

HOW and WHAT to wash the suspended ceiling in the kitchen WITHOUT SCRATCHES?! How to wash a suspended ceiling from dust and grease?!

To wash or not to wash

Caring for the ceiling involves dry and wet cleaning methods . They are selected depending on the surface, type of contamination and the desired result.

  • Dry cleaning is carried out using a simple sponge, consisting of rubbing the surface and giving it shine. Most often they resort to it for preventive purposes.
  • Wet cleaning is much more effective , allowing you to eliminate stubborn stains, stains and other contaminants.

The kitchen ceiling is the first to face household costs, taking on drops of grease, settling dust, smoke and traces of insects. When asking what is the best way to wash suspended ceilings in the kitchen, you need to remember that in terms of cleaning this is the most difficult place in the whole house . This is where the hard work of the housewife and her ability to hold the house in her hands are manifested.

The basis of order is timely cleaning . In no case should you wait until the stain goes away on its own or new defects are added to it, so that later, during general cleaning, you can attack the stains with all your might. A daily cleanliness regimen is much more effective. With it, all problems are eliminated in the current manner, and the stains do not have time to harden and stain, forcing the ceiling covering to be replaced.

Carefully! When washing the ceiling, you should avoid excessive pressure and effort. The caution is especially relevant if there is a small gap between the ceiling and the slab. When cleaning, remove any jewelry, rings, or bracelets that could scratch or damage the surface.

Timely cleaning does not negate careful execution . Even if the contamination is noticeable and seems irremovable, there is no need to rub the surface recklessly. The structure of the material allows for easy removal of any stains; just choose a suitable detergent.

A prerequisite is the use of soft working tools . These include a sponge, flannel cloth, soft rags and similar materials. Stretch ceilings do not like hard brushes, sponges and abrasives. They scratch and tear the surface, making replacement of the blade almost inevitable.

It is best to use a stepladder , which allows you to reach the ceiling while having the necessary materials at hand. In its absence, a rag or napkin is wrapped around the mop and gently passed over the surface. A vacuum cleaner is also suitable, especially when you need to remove ordinary dust, cobwebs from corners and similar things that do not require the use of special tools. By removing the plug on the hose, the vacuum cleaner is set to the minimum operating mode, sufficient for this type of cleaning.

Whitening the ceiling

Over time, stains can become increasingly ingrained into the structure of the fabric and simple cleaning products will not help. Only cleaning agents containing chlorine are suitable for bleaching fibers. Most often, this problem is faced by owners of snow-white ceilings, on which yellowness quickly appears.

Textile bleaches are equally suitable for all suspended ceiling textures. For glossy and matte PVC coatings, you can also use tile and plumbing cleaners - it can and does polish the surface. To clean dirt, it is necessary to distribute the product evenly over the surface of the ceiling (with a spray or a silicone brush - depending on the consistency of the detergent)

Attention! To avoid damage to the ceiling, test the product on a small, inconspicuous area and, after making sure that it has a safe effect on the structure of the canvas, proceed to work.

If the cause of the yellow spots is rust stains and we are talking about a satin ceiling, then oxygen bleach for textiles will come to the rescue. A mushy mixture of oxygen bleach is applied to the local stain and left for 15-20 minutes. Then wash off with warm water.

Methods for cleaning glossy and matte ceilings

Modern canvases are divided into two types:

  • Ceilings made of PVC film (glossy or matte);
  • Seamless fabric ceilings.

Features of installation and maintenance depend on the material, which determines how to clean suspended ceilings in the kitchen. Glossy PVC surfaces can easily withstand soap and powder solutions , as well as specialized materials, which can be purchased at any hardware store.

Important! For shine, glossy surfaces are wiped with alcohol solutions. These include alcohol diluted with water in a consistency of 1:10 or regular vodka. The procedure is performed at the end of cleaning, ensuring that there are no soap stains on the surface.

It is the glossy surface that requires timely cleaning. It is undesirable for grease or food stains to have time to dry out and become embedded in the structure of the fabric, especially since at an early stage their removal will not take more than 5 minutes.

A matte ceiling does not require such scrupulous treatment. Spots and stains from soap and powder solutions are not so noticeable on its surface. With it, the housewife will be able to resort to wet cleaning more often without fear of scratching the canvas.

The procedure itself for removing dirt from a matte surface is much faster, but you need to resort to it more often. Soap and powder solutions, dish soap and specialized materials are suitable. The lack of shine allows you to do without ammonia and glass cleaning liquids.

Fabric ceilings are traditionally more vulnerable to external influences and require painstaking treatment and care. You can wash it only in extreme cases when a regular detergent cannot cope with the contamination. In addition, you should avoid intensively rubbing the surface in the same place.

Specialized materials are used as ceiling care products. They are purchased in household chemical stores, after consulting with the seller.

Advice. Fabric ceilings should not be wiped with glass cleaner. They include substances that penetrate the tissue structure and lead to irreversible changes.

Sometimes it is not possible to remove stains and other contaminants on your own. There is no need to despair in such a situation. Cleaning companies come to the rescue, whose employees are able to quickly fix the problem and give practical advice on further care of the ceiling.

Preventive maintenance of suspended ceilings

It is easier to prevent any problem than to eliminate its consequences. The condition for long-term operation of suspended ceilings and the preservation of their original appearance is careful care and pollution prevention measures. To do this, it is enough to follow the following rules:

  1. Using a powerful hood in the kitchen. Vapors with fat particles will not settle on the ceiling and walls if the hood copes with its task.
  2. You should not smoke in the house or even on the landing near the apartment. Drafts will draw cigarette smoke into the apartment and its settling on the ceilings and walls will become inevitable.
  3. Windows covered with mesh will help save the room from street dust: about 60% of dust particles settle on the mosquito net.
  4. Install spotlights with a power of no more than 60 W. This will prevent yellow spots from appearing near them.
  5. Choose only high-quality, reliable materials for the ceiling. Savings in this matter can result in even greater expenses, since the performance properties of cheap films are worse: they are deformed, can change color and react with detergents, which will only make the dirt worse.

Following these simple rules will extend the life and beauty of suspended ceilings in the kitchen.

Useful tips

To properly wash a suspended ceiling, follow the recommendations regarding the algorithm of actions. Cleaning must be careful to avoid damage to the structure or the appearance of streaks.

The first thing experts recommend is to remove rings and bracelets from your hands. They can damage the ceiling while you are cleaning it. It is recommended to use gloves so that your skin does not interact with the cleaning solution and your nails do not scratch the fabric.

The fabric used as rags should be soft and extremely simple, without lint. Preference is given to smooth and soft options. The best choice is microfiber cloths. They absorb well and do not leave streaks.

Cloth sponge for washing

Choose a detergent without bleaches, acetone or abrasive particles in the composition. It is not recommended to use soda or washing powders. To make sure that the chosen solution will not cause damage, drop it in an inconspicuous place on the structure. If there is no reaction and the canvas has not lost its appearance, feel free to use the selected solution.

If the stains are strong and you can’t just get rid of them, do not put pressure on the canvas. The solution must not be rubbed in with a rag. This will not lead to positive results and may damage the surface. As an alternative, ammonia is chosen. With its help, even heavy stains are cleaned.

Attention!

If you don't know how to properly clean a surface, don't risk it. Professionals will help you keep your suspended ceiling in an attractive, clean form. They will take care of selecting suitable cleaning products and methods.

Prohibited cleaning methods

Regardless of the texture of the canvas, there are obvious taboos for cleaning them:

  1. Using abrasive products will cause scratches. They spoil the appearance and lead to the absorption of contaminants into the fibers during further use.
  2. Acetone-containing substances destroy the structure of the fabric and can lead to damage.
  3. Mechanical impact (pressure, scraping, strong friction) can damage the ceiling.

These three methods of cleaning suspended ceilings are prohibited and will inevitably lead to property damage. If you couldn’t avoid the appearance of stains and you can’t fix the problem yourself, you should turn to professionals for help.

In some cases, painting the canvas can solve the problem if it belongs to the category of satin stretch ceilings.
Regular cleaning, compliance with the rules of care and prevention of contamination will make the housewife’s work easier and preserve the original appearance of the stretched fabric in the kitchen. Care of suspended ceilings. How to clean difficult stains on the ceiling? Tips from Asta M

How to clean kitchen surfaces from grease

If you have a snow-white or beige linen installed in your kitchen, then it is more susceptible to harmful effects. And even if there is a hood, the soot still settles on the surface along with grease, which is not so easy to wash off. There is no point in postponing cleaning until “later” - general cleaning should become a more frequent ritual than in the guest room. The same applies to bathrooms due to high humidity.

Kitchen surfaces can be washed in the following ways:

  • Dilute liquid soap in a small amount of water. Achieve the formation of dense foam, which you can use to wash the ceiling using a soft sponge. A high-quality dish soap will also help you deal with grease.
  • If you use powder, then give preference to types for activator washing. In order to get rid of grains that can cause damage, dilute it in water and beat with a mixer until completely dissolved.
  • If you have a steam generator at your disposal, use it - this will allow grease stains to become more pliable and will be easier to wipe off. But do not overdo it with the temperature - it should not exceed 40 degrees. Keep the device no closer than 30 centimeters. Afterwards, wash with soapy water and wipe.

When to wash and clean tensioned suspension systems

When the ceiling is washed, it is immediately noticeable. The glossy surface plays with colors and tints, reflecting the light of the switched on lamps. The clean, matte surface diffuses light better, increasing indoor comfort.

However, the condition of the ceilings is greatly affected by the level and intensity of use of the room. Pollution is especially noticeable in the kitchen or in those areas where people most often stay. In such places, cleaning of the suspended structure is required at least 1-2 times a year. In the living room or in the hall, this procedure is performed less frequently.

For reference: it’s worth focusing specifically on the children’s room. In a child's bedroom or playroom, where the child spends most of his time, wet cleaning of ceilings, including tension systems, is carried out at least once a month.

Also, the condition of the ceiling surface made of PVC film is influenced by the quality of the material. Branded stretch ceilings will retain their original virgin appearance longer. During operation, such canvases and fabrics are treated with special compounds and agents that reduce the degree of contamination of the film or fabric.

In order to achieve the desired effect, I wash the suspended ceiling, observing certain rules, subtleties and nuances.

How to remove soot from a stretch ceiling

It will not be possible to remove soot from a stretch ceiling with a simple sponge.
To make stretch ceilings, materials with an antistatic coating are used; cobwebs and small dry particles do not stick to them. But in the kitchen there is high humidity, specific fumes and fumes. Even a good hood does not always prevent soot, smoke, steam and other external factors from settling on the ceiling.

Causes of pollution

During the operation of the premises, the following are formed on the tension surface:

  • yellow stains from grease and soot above the stove;
  • brown residue from tobacco smoke;
  • traces of flies;
  • rusty spots from condensation on pipes;
  • stains that form when the roof leaks or water leaks from neighbors above.

Soot cannot be wiped off with a dry cloth or plain water, as this will spread the stain and make it larger.

How to prepare for cleaning

It is necessary to wash suspended ceilings from soot and soot so as not to damage them. Therefore, before starting work, remove jewelry from your hands.

When working with aggressive agents, you need a mask, gloves and goggles

Prepare the necessary equipment:

  • water bucket;
  • a stable stepladder;
  • rags for washing;
  • mop with foam roller;
  • a brush with soft bristles.

For your own safety you need the following:

  • thick rubber gloves;
  • eye protection glasses;
  • respirator;
  • headdress;
  • long-sleeved work clothes.

As soon as traces of dirt appear on the ceiling, they must be washed immediately, because old stains are harder to remove than fresh ones.

Pollution prevention

To avoid having to wash matte fabrics frequently, follow these recommendations:

  • use the shower in the bathroom carefully so that splashes of water do not fly off to the ceiling, or buy a curtain;
  • install a hood in the kitchen that will prevent grease and soot from getting on the canvas;
  • Regularly ventilate rooms with suspended ceilings. Especially in those rooms where condensation often forms.

Cleaning the ceiling after renovation

We clean the ceiling from dust after repairs with a vacuum cleaner.
To remove debris and dust remaining after repairs, use a vacuum cleaner and a brush with soft bristles. It is strictly forbidden to use hard brushes, as they can damage the surface.

Turn on the vacuum cleaner to the minimum operating power mode, but do not press the brush tightly to the coating, move it at a distance of 1.5-3 cm from the ceiling. When you remove the dust, evaluate the result. If everything is in order, gently wipe the surface with a dry soft cloth. If stains remain, wash the canvas.

Stretch ceilings are a common finishing method. The coating looks impressive and provides opportunities for experimenting with design. But the surface needs regular cleaning. High-quality care will extend the life of the decorative structure and preserve its appearance.

The process of cleaning the canvas from various contaminants

You can solve the problem of how to clean a suspended ceiling in the kitchen at home using the following scheme:

  • Start working in one of the corners, gradually moving to the other corner. If the ceiling has a complex structure, then you can wash the surface in separate sections.
  • When using a spray for glass surfaces, spray the product on a certain area 2-3 times and wipe the surface with a soft cloth, making circular movements.
  • Streak-free cleaning requires less intense spraying and the use of soft paper.
  • To solve the problem of how to wash soot from a stretch ceiling, moisten a rag in water with the addition of dishwashing detergent and wring it out well. Then, trying not to exert much effort, wipe the ceiling in a circular motion.
  • It is also recommended to remove cobwebs in the corners with a rag, since using a vacuum cleaner for this purpose can damage the fragile fabric. For the same reason, you should not use a mop or broom.
  • Regular care of a matte stretch ceiling consists of wiping with a damp soft cloth; for glossy fabric, just wipe with a dry cloth.

What to do with unusual stains and defects

If you clean your ceiling incorrectly, it may cause minor damage. Many of them can be dealt with independently, without replacing the finishing material.

Small wrinkled spots

After a flood, PVC film may wrinkle. This occurs due to stretching and especially from hot water. After a few hours, high-quality material levels out and takes on its original appearance.

If a day after a wrinkled spot from flooding appears on the suspended ceiling, the material has not been smoothed out, the surface is leveled using a heat gun.

When it is not possible to call a specialist with special equipment, they use a construction or regular household hair dryer. The canvas is heated with warm air, kept at a distance of about 30 cm from the ceiling. You should not bring the device closer - the PVC film may melt.

What to avoid when washing suspended ceilings?

When washing suspended ceilings, avoid powder detergents.

To ensure that your ceiling lasts as long as possible, do not forget about safety precautions. When cleaning ceilings yourself, it is prohibited to use:

  • hot water (clean only with warm water!);
  • powder cleaners - may scratch the surface;
  • acetone and chlorine - deforms the coating and discolors it;
  • furniture polishes - have too aggressive composition;
  • a vacuum cleaner with a wet cleaning function has an excessively intense effect.

With proper care, a stretch ceiling will retain its original appearance for many years. If the soiling is too heavy - for example, after renovation - it is better to entrust the cleaning to professionals from the cleaning service.

What detergents can be used

When choosing professional cleaning products for suspended ceilings in the kitchen, choose those that do not contain acetone, so as not to spoil the surface. Liquids with abrasive particles or hard granules are also excluded. To avoid damaging the canvas, carry out the test in an inconspicuous area. If nothing has changed in 10-15 minutes, then wash the entire surface.

You can wash the surface of the suspended ceiling in the kitchen from grease with various cleaning agents:

  • Dishwashing liquid. Effectively removes stubborn grease and fresh dirt. A couple of drops are diluted with warm water, and the ceiling is washed with a soft cloth. In the kitchen, dishwashing liquid fights grease much better than special formulations;

  • Acetone-free detergents, such as Mister Proper. The liquid is diluted with plenty of water, applied to the contaminated areas using a rag or mop, and wiped dry. Professional compositions easily wash the surface of the suspended ceiling in the kitchen from various types of contaminants, without leaving streaks, so cleaning is often carried out in one stage. You can also use washing powder, preferably for children, diluted until the granules are completely dissolved;

  • Grease from a white surface can be easily washed off with hydrogen peroxide mixed with soda. The gruel is distributed over the contaminated area and washed off after 2-3 hours with clean water;

  • Soda Ash. To prepare a cleaning mixture for washing a suspended ceiling in the kitchen, dilute soda with water, adding 2 tablespoons of the dry component to each liter of liquid. The solution is also used for degreasing. To improve the effect, you can add 1 tablespoon of table salt or fatty clay. The composition is thoroughly mixed, applied to the stain, left until completely dry, then washed off with warm water. Can only be used for matte canvases;

  • Individual grease stains on a kitchen stretch ceiling can be washed with white spirit, applying the solvent to the contaminated area, and after 20-30 minutes washing it off with a soap solution;

  • If you have a steam generator at home, you can use it - hot steam will soften old fat, which can then be easily washed off;
  • You can use a glass cleaner to remove greasy stains on PVC films. The liquid is sprayed over the contaminated area, gently wiped with a soft cloth without using intense movements;

  • Soap or powder solution. Laundry soap is rubbed on a coarse grater, dissolved in water, the suspended ceiling is washed with the resulting liquid, and washed off with clean water. When using a powder, it is better to choose a children's one, diluting it until the granules are completely dissolved;

  • Dry vacuuming. A short-haired brush is held a few centimeters below the surface of the suspended ceiling in the kitchen. If desired, you can attach a damp cloth to the vacuum cleaner;

  • Specialized household chemicals are produced specifically for washing suspended ceilings, so they can remove stains without damaging them. The selected product is distributed over the stain, left for the time specified in the instructions, lightly rubbed with a cloth or sponge, and washed off with clean water. The most popular household chemicals: Edelweiss - sprayed over the contaminated area, wiped with gentle pressure; Nouvel - works on the same principle, but its cost is higher; Light layer - easily copes with greasy stains, soot, dust;

  • Dry cleaning with soft napkins or suede cloth, which do not damage the fabric and perfectly collect dirt;

  • A damp sponge washes away grease and grime, while a porous sponge absorbs it easily.

What to do to wash suspended ceilings as rarely as possible

  • Once every few months, use a microfiber cloth to wipe off dust and minor dirt from the ceiling.
  • Before installing a stretch ceiling, check the condition of the pipes: stains from leaks are difficult to remove.
  • It is better not to smoke in the room, otherwise the ceiling will turn yellow.
  • If a cobweb has formed in the corner, remove it not with a vacuum cleaner, but with a mop and a clean cloth.
  • If the ceiling gets dirty, wipe it immediately while the stain is fresh.
  • It is worth making a suspended ceiling in the bathroom only if you have a good hood, otherwise it may become damp and stained.

How to clean different types of ceilings

A suspended ceiling can be made of different materials. This can be glossy or matte PVC film, as well as seamless fabric. Each type of material has its own care characteristics.

Matte

A matte ceiling is easy to care for; streaks and small stains are less visible on it. This surface can be washed frequently and cleaning will not take much time.

Soap, powder or dish degreasers are suitable for processing. There is no need to rub the matte ceiling coating until it shines.

Glossy

You can wash a glossy stretch ceiling from soot using a soap solution or washing powder if the canvas is made of a glossy film. It is recommended to remove greasy stains from such a film immediately so that they do not have time to be absorbed into the structure of the material.

The shine of such a surface can be given by a mixture of water and alcohol.

Satin

To ensure that the bright and rich color of the satin ceiling covering does not change, you must choose mild detergents. You can treat with a soap solution and then wipe the surface dry with a flannel cloth.

Detergents that contain alcohol are not suitable for cleaning satin finishes.

Fabric

It is more difficult to care for fabric; only special products are suitable for it. The fabric should not be rubbed in one place for a long time, so as not to spoil the original appearance. If you cannot wash the fabric surface on your own, it is better to seek help from special cleaning companies.

Routine cleaning will take less time and will be done better than removing old stains. Daily care and following simple rules will keep the suspended ceiling in good condition for a long time.
