Wool trousers are one of the main products in both men's and women's wardrobes, especially in the cold season. They look solid and respectable, go well with other clothes, and are an excellent alternative to jeans. But at the same time, wool trousers require special treatment.

We have prepared a list of recommendations for proper care of wool trousers. Use them to preserve the original appearance and condition of the product for a long time.

What items can be washed with jeans?

Most often, denim items are washed with cotton items (T-shirts, shorts, sports pants). Washing jeans with other things is possible, provided you follow the main rule: things should be approximately the same color scheme and similar in structure.

Features of caring for wool trousers

First of all, study the information on the label from the manufacturer. It indicates the acceptable type of washing of trousers (hand or machine), maximum temperature and other data. So, if the length of the pile exceeds 3 cm, then the trousers can only be washed by hand.

Before washing, check your trouser pockets to make sure there are no change, phone or other items in them. Remove the belt and fasten all fasteners.

If stains have formed on the trousers, then before washing they must first be removed separately - just apply 9% vinegar or hydrogen peroxide to the stain using a clean sponge.

You can also leave the trousers in cold water for 1 hour, adding ammonia to it. Hot water cannot be used - otherwise the trousers will lose their shape.

Is it possible?

Machine washing saves time, but not all pants can handle it. To understand whether they can be subjected to automatic cleaning, you need to study the manufacturer's information, which is indicated on the tag. It is encrypted in the form of characters. The prohibition is indicated by the crossed out image of a washing machine.

There is no need to take risks in the following cases:

  1. The trousers are made of delicate fabrics: velvet, suede, satin, wool, leather.
  2. They have a large number of decorations in the form of rhinestones, sequins, beads, etc.
  3. Trousers of questionable quality, for example, with seams that may come apart.

Compared to machine washing, manual processing is more labor-intensive, but it allows you to carefully clean the item of dirt and pay special attention to problem areas.

You will have to refuse machine washing if the trousers label contains the entry “dry clean only”.

Dry washing wool trousers

Sometimes the labels indicate “Dry wash only.” Such a restriction involves the use of products that do not need to be dissolved in water. This prevents wool trousers from becoming deformed. This recommendation is most often found on handmade products or with complex decoration.

Dry washing is carried out according to the following algorithm:

  1. Place the wool trousers in a washing bag, leaving a little free space in it - this will allow the clothes to be exposed to air;
  2. Additionally, place 3-4 wet wipes in the bag. During washing, the moisture will evaporate from them, which will prevent the wool from drying out, and will also straighten out folds or creases on the trousers;
  3. Place the bag containing the pants and wet wipes in the washing machine drum;
  4. Select the “Drying” mode, minimum air temperature and time – up to 30 minutes.

After washing, carefully hang the trousers on hangers or place them on a floor dryer in a horizontal position.

If your washing machine does not have a “Drying” mode, you can use other dry washing methods - for example:

  1. Starch

    . The product effectively absorbs dirt;

  2. Baking soda

    . This is a natural sorbent that absorbs dirt well and is affordable;

  3. Hydrogen peroxide

    . The product is suitable for light-colored trousers;

  4. Ammonia

    . This is a universal stain remover, but it cannot be applied to trousers in its pure form - you must first mix the product with water.

There are also special solutions for dry cleaning - for example, Minutka gel stain remover, dry Spot Remover. Woolite gel is especially suitable for wool trousers: it does not contain any aggressive substances.

K2r aerosol spray is also suitable for wool trousers. It is enough to spray the product onto the stain, after which the substance will be absorbed into the fibers of the fabric and dissolve stubborn dirt.

Hand wash wool trousers

Procedure:

  1. Fill the basin with water at a temperature of up to 30 °C;
  2. Add a cleaning agent - for example, baby or laundry soap;
  3. Place the trousers in the solution and leave them to soak for up to 30 minutes;
  4. Remove all stains and other dirt from trousers using a soft brush;
  5. Rinse your pants several times to remove any excess soap on the surface.

Attention!

You should not lather wool trousers with soap - it is only permissible to soak the item in a soap solution.

After washing, it is recommended to rinse the trousers in fabric softener. This will prevent them from becoming electrified.

Rubbing your pants with force and using abrasive brushes is unacceptable. You should also not wring out woolen trousers - just hang them out to dry, allowing the water to drain from the clothes themselves.

How to dry and iron correctly?

When the trousers are washed, they need to be hung over the bathtub. You should not place them near heating devices, this will shrink them. After drying, the trousers are placed on a drying board and folded in the direction of the arrow. They need to be ironed. The arrows need to be made even on both legs.

For drying, to prevent creases, it is better to use a special hanger on your belt. Dry trousers should be hung on a hanger.

It is better to find out information on ironing modes from the label. The front part is ironed using gauze or cotton cloth. To make creases, the trousers are sprayed with a little water and then ironed.

Washing trousers is not as difficult as it might seem. You just need to do this work taking into account all the above nuances, and then the result will definitely please you.

Steaming

And finally, ironing. You can use a regular iron in the “Wool” mode. But you will achieve maximum results with a steamer. Just a little effort - and the woolen product will take on its original appearance. Non-contact steam treatment will give your clothes freshness and very soon they will look like new!

Follow these simple rules - and your woolen products will not only serve you for a long time, but will also significantly improve their quality. They will become softer and more pleasant to the touch!

Tips for drying wool trousers

Wool trousers should be kept in a well-ventilated area. At the same time, you cannot leave them in the fresh air under the open sky: such clothes, especially wet ones, very quickly collect street dust.

There is no need to hang your trousers on a rope - otherwise there will be stripes and creases on them. Only floor dryers or hangers are acceptable. You should not try to speed up the drying process by using a hairdryer or heating sources - this will only ruin the trousers.

After the wool trousers have dried, they can be ironed, but only through gauze.

If after washing the trousers have lost their creases, they can be restored. To give the creases the desired shape, ironing should be done when the trousers are not completely dry. After ironing, trousers with creases are hung vertically on a special hanger.

Selection of detergents

What is better to choose - powder or gel? Each product is used for a specific purpose. To care for delicate materials or freshen clothes, it is better to choose a gel. It dissolves perfectly in water and will affect the item from all sides.

With a liquid product, a lot of foam does not form. Therefore, even if you add a large amount, you don’t have to worry that the item won’t rinse well. If there are children in the house, the gel will be safer because it is always closed.

To remove heavy stains, it is advisable to choose loose washing powder. It perfectly removes stains from linen and cotton trousers. The oxygen substances present perfectly remove dirt from white products. The powders also contain odor neutralizers.

Washing wool trousers in the machine

Suitable modes for washing trousers in an automatic machine are “Delicate mode”, “Hand wash”, “Wool”, “Silk”. Maximum temperature – up to 30 °C.

Procedure:

  1. Make sure there are no small change, phone or keys in your trousers - such things can damage both clothing and the inner surface of the drum;
  2. Soak the trousers in a bowl of warm soapy water for 10 minutes;
  3. Place the trousers in a special clothes washing bag;
  4. Move the product into the machine (there should be no other things in the drum, maximum - the same things made of wool);
  5. Add gel agent to the compartment;
  6. Set the spin speed to 300 rpm.

To care for woolen items, it is recommended to purchase products that are specifically designed for washing wool items.

Once the wash is finished, leave the pants to drain. Then hang them on the drying rack.

Attention!

If wool trousers are expensive, then it is better not to take risks with manual or automatic washing, but to take them to the dry cleaner. Specialists will provide professional care, which guarantees high-quality cleaning and no shrinkage of the trousers.

Ironing

Ironing is the final stage. After washing and drying, even low-wrinkle material needs high-quality ironing .
Depending on the type of fabric, the heating temperature of the iron sole is selected.

Pants are ironed through additional fabric, especially careful handling of creases. If they are smoothed out unevenly, it will no longer be easy to correct the situation.

What does the type of material affect?

Costumes are made from various materials. The characteristics of the product and the requirements for washing depend on the type of fabric . Velvet, for example, is designed for dry cleaning or dry cleaning at home.

Cotton and linen

Lightweight suits are made from natural linen and cotton, designed to be worn in the summer.
Trousers made from this material can be processed both manually and by machine. Read about how to wash cotton here.

Depending on the density of the material and color, such pants can withstand processing up to +60ºС , if this indicator is allowed by the manufacturer.

But it is better not to exceed the value of +40ºС, since at high temperatures slight shrinkage is possible.

Recommended modes:

Synthetic, polyester

Synthetics and mixed fabrics with a high percentage of artificial fibers are washed on a delicate cycle or on a “synthetic” cycle. The water heating temperature is set to no more than +40ºС.

This publication will tell you how to wash polyester.

Velveteen

Corduroy fabric is sensitive to high temperatures. The optimal option for it is from +20 ºС to +30ºС. It would be better to wash these trousers by hand.

Wool, tweed

Trousers from a quality wool suit are washed on a delicate cycle or with the “wool” setting.
As a rule, such fabrics are washed at +30ºС . If you exceed this figure, the material may shrink and become deformed.

Wool and wool mixture are the main types of fabrics for sewing most high-quality men's suits of classic models.

Atlas

Wash - on delicate cycle, without drying or spinning. The fabric requires very careful handling, as it tends to be easily damaged by contact with hard surfaces, elements of sewing accessories, etc. Washing should only be done with liquid detergent.
