Don’t rush to throw away: 10 useful things from linoleum scraps

After the renovation is completed, building materials remain that can be used on the farm.
They can not only be used for their intended purpose, but also in completely different capacities.

Families with children can make their own linoleum crafts, mosaic elements and decorate the walls with them. In this article we will look at how to give a second life to the remains of linoleum during construction work and for interior decoration.

Mousepad

A small piece of linoleum will make an excellent computer mouse pad.

Draw on paper or find it on the Internet and print the desired stencil. Circle it, applying it to the wrong side of the linoleum. Cut along the outline. That's it, the mat is ready.

By spending a few minutes, you will receive a high-quality item of the shape you like with an original color, while also saving on the purchase of a new rug.

Crafts

Pieces of facing material make excellent:

  • slippers - there are never too many of them, especially at the dacha;
  • coverings for steps and veranda floors, including those laid out from pieces;
  • knife sheath;
  • cases for phones, tablets;
  • insoles for shoes;
  • soles for felt slippers - sew pieces of linoleum to street slippers so that they do not get wet from moisture.

Linoleum for upholstery of steps, floors in the shower and toilet should be laid across the course. This is necessary to prevent slipping and not falling.

Convenient tool organizer

Sew an organizer with pockets for storing tools from linoleum scraps.

Cut out two rectangular pieces: one for the base of the organizer, the second for the pockets. The second rectangle should be narrower, but longer than the first.

Mark the width of the pockets on the base. Decide on their volume. Tools with thick handles will require looser pockets. For screwdrivers and scissors - flat so that the tools do not slip or fall out from below.

Align the left sides of the rectangles and use an awl and strong thread to sew them together. Making allowances for sufficient volume of pockets, sew the top rectangle to the base along all the marked lines.

To keep the pieces from shifting as you sew, bring the bottom edges together and secure with paper clips, removing them as you go. For convenience, use a thick rubber backing when making punctures with an awl.

Attach the organizer to the wall of your workshop or garage and place your tools - now they will always be at hand.

Protecting plants from diseases and weeds

Weeds are a problem for all summer residents, but we have a solution! In the place where most weeds grow, you need to lay linoleum! This will help get rid of this scourge. After all, people often complain about their neighbors whose garden is overgrown with weeds and is now moving to a clean area.

There is also a solution: you need to lay a strip of linoleum along the fence. The root simply suffocates under the cover, and the weed itself burns, but for the next couple of years it will be impossible to plant anything there, so use this method carefully.

Floor mat

If you have several scraps of linoleum of different colors left, then make an original floor mat from them.

Cut out squares or rectangles and fold them in a checkerboard or other pattern. Join the edges using a special adhesive called liquid welding.

This rug looks unusual and is easy to clean. It will decorate the hallway, veranda or summer kitchen.

What can be made from leftover linoleum - incredible ideas for using the coating

After renovation, there is always a surplus of building materials left. Some of them may not be useful in any way on the farm and are simply thrown away, while some, on the contrary, have many different uses invented by folk craftsmen. The latter also includes linoleum, the use of which, in fact, is the subject of this article.

If after repairs you still have pieces or even small pieces of this floor, do not rush to throw it away. Below I will tell you some interesting ideas for using it, and you will see that this material is really useful at home.

Crafts from linoleum

In general, there are many options for using linoleum, as you can see below. However, all of them can be divided into several areas:

Main directions for using linoleum residues

Below we will take a closer look at what linoleum can be made from and how to use it on the farm.

In the photo - the floor of the balcony is covered with linoleum

Direct use

Since linoleum is primarily a floor covering, we will consider options for using it for its intended purpose. If the pieces are large enough, they may be enough to cover the floor of a balcony, closet or other small room.

Even if a large part is missing, several smaller parts can be connected. In any case, such a coating is easy to clean and is generally much more practical than a concrete surface, even if it is painted.

If, after finishing the floors in different rooms, there are multi-colored scraps left, they can be cut into pieces of the correct shape (squares, rectangles, etc.) and laid out on the floor, for example, in the kitchen or in the hallway. To diversify the coating, you can ask friends for this type of finish or even buy them for pennies in a hardware store or at the market.

Floor made from linoleum scraps

This finished floor looks very original and modern. The main thing is to arrange the finish well, for example, as in the photo above.

Owners of country houses can find many other uses for this material. For example, you can place it on the floor of an outdoor bathroom or outdoor shower. In general, there are quite enough options for using small pieces of linoleum as flooring.

Motorists can make an excellent carpet from linoleum, which can be useful if you suddenly need to look under the car, as well as in many other cases.

This mat folds easily and does not take up much space in the trunk.

Crafts

As for making crafts, in this case the options for using the material depend only on your imagination.

Here are some examples:

  • since the surface of the material has an attractive appearance, various decorative decorations can be made from it, for example, for furniture or walls;

Linoleum mosaic

  • small multi-colored pieces of cladding can be used for mosaics that can decorate a wall or floor;
  • Many craftsmen make various functional products from linoleum with their own hands: they sew bags, wallets, cases for mobile phones, book covers, knife sheaths, wicker baskets and even slippers.

Examples of linoleum crafts

Therefore, linoleum is also an excellent material for all types of crafts, as it is easy to process, has good elasticity and is quite durable. Thanks to a beautiful surface that can imitate wood, marble, or simply have a bright pattern, artifacts made from linoleum remains have a presentable appearance and can serve as interior decoration.

You can make a beautiful vase from a cardboard tube of linoleum.

The main thing is to understand how to decorate it.

Use of chemical properties

To know how to use chemical properties, you first need to understand what linoleum is made of. Initially, this coating was linseed, impregnated with oil. Hence its name - “lin” is translated as flax, and “oleum” is oil.

Nowadays, of course, there is a completely different technology for making this coating. Most often, the top layer is a plastic, or rather vinyl, sheet. The latter dissolves well in acetone, and after it evaporates it hardens again.

Making glue from linoleum scraps

By taking advantage of this property, you can make a universal and very strong glue. It can be used to glue paper, cardboard, wood, plastic and even metal surfaces.

The instructions for making such glue are as follows:

  1. First of all, you need to prepare the linoleum: wash it from dirt and dust, and also tear off the coating, if any. It is better, of course, to use a single-layer material so as not to bother with the lining;
  2. then the trimmings are cut into small pieces with a sharp knife.
    It should be borne in mind that the smaller the pieces, the faster the material will dissolve in acetone. Therefore, it is desirable that they do not exceed a few millimeters. however, if you are not in a hurry, you can chop finely rather than cut;
  3. then you need to pour the trimmings into a glass jar and fill them with acetone so that it completely covers them;
  4. After this, the jar must be tightly closed. To do this, under the nylon case you can put a plastic bag folded several times;
  5. Now the jar needs to be placed in a dark and cool place and wait two to three days for the linoleum to completely melt.

This glue can be made not only from linoleum, but also from plastic bottles.

Now our glue is ready. You can produce it in any quantity, and its price will be equal to the cost of acetone. The main thing is to store it in an airtight container so that it does not dry out.

An example of using linoleum in an outdoor bathroom

Application on the farm

There are also many options for using this material on the farm.

Let me mention a few as examples:

  • overlays can be used to upholster benches and tables.
    As a result, their surface will be easy to clean from dust and dirt. After rain, you can wipe such a bench with a dry cloth and sit comfortably on it. In addition, the material will protect the wood from moisture, so the products will last longer;
  • if the dacha has a wooden toilet with many cracks, it can be covered with linoleum;
  • sealants for nails are often made from small scraps from roofing work;
  • Since the material has waterproofing properties, it can be used to make a roof ridge, for example, when building a gazebo.

If linoleum is natural, it is not suitable for outdoor use as it is susceptible to moisture and extreme temperatures.

You will certainly find many other uses for this material, especially if you have a country house.

Conclusion

Thanks to a number of useful properties, linoleum, as we found out, can be used for a variety of purposes, from making decorative elements to durable adhesive. Therefore, even small scraps remaining after repairs should not be thrown away. Sooner or later they will definitely come in handy.

Soles for slippers

Fur house slippers, sewn in the shape of funny little animals, often have soles made of fragile material that wears out quickly. If the soles are worn out, then do not rush to throw away your favorite slippers. Use to replace linoleum trim.

Place the two pieces right sides together, trace the sole and cut out. Glue a felt or fur insole on the inside. Having connected the top of the slippers with the sole, sew around the perimeter with strong threads.

To feel confident on any floor, choose linoleum with a surface that will provide good grip. Smooth, glossy material will not work as it will slip on a wet floor.

For home or apartment

First, about the simple things - stands for hot dishes, pots, mouse pads and a laptop. Even a teenager can handle this.

Now the options are a little more complicated:

The popular bookmaker has released a mobile application for Android, you can follow the link absolutely free.

  • Cutting board . Upholster an old but intact wooden board with a piece of linoleum and a new board is ready that will last another 5 years.

  • Flooring made from pieces . Suitable for corridors, balconies, hallways and storage rooms.
  • Glue . To make it, scraps of linoleum no larger than 5 mm in size must be pushed into a jar, filled with acetone, shaken and allowed to stand. In a couple of days, the glue is ready, onto which you can glue anything - from tiles to wood.

  • By adding a little chalk to the mixture with glue, the owners will receive excellent grout and putty for tiles . By the way, you can attach tiles with glue and chalk, it will hold tightly, and you can use putty to seal cracks - the composition resists moisture and is not afraid of temperature fluctuations.

  • Sew several pieces of strong wood and the rug is ready for the hallway or the floor of the car. In a large format, the mat is useful for car repairs. To prevent it from being cold when lying under the car, pieces from the tops of old felt boots should be glued to the back of the mat. A good option is to glue a prefabricated mat from pieces of linoleum onto the carpet.
  • Pieces of material can be used to renew damaged linoleum. It is necessary to carefully cut out the defect, a new fragment and glue the patch so that the edges come together at one level.

What can you do with old tights, interesting options and ideas

Spectacular bag

Some linoleum samples look like high-quality leather. From the remnants of such finishing material you can sew a stylish bag.

Find a suitable pattern on the Internet. It is best to choose a model with a one-piece flap, but the option with a wide top zipper will also look impressive.

For the belt, clasps and trim, use fittings and decorative details from an old, used bag.

Pest Control

Currant and gooseberry bushes are often affected by insect pests. Remnants of linoleum will be useful to combat them. The method is especially effective when infested with moth and sawflies. In early spring, spread pieces of material under the bushes, and remove the shelter at the end of spring. Insects will not be able to reach the bushes.

Car mat

If the size of the remaining floor covering allows, then make mats for the car from them. Linoleum is a durable material, it does not wrinkle underfoot, washes well, so it is popular among motorists. It is used to make floor mats for the interior, trunk, and garage.

Take the original rugs as a basis for the pattern and cut out new ones along their contour. The product will save your money and will last for many years.

For the motorist

In this area it is possible to use scraps as:

Use CasesMethods of implementation
1Bedding for motorists when repairing a carYou can use a long piece to lie on if you need to look under the car during repairs.
2Car matA small piece of linoleum laid in the car helps keep the interior clean. This rug is easy to clean, you can simply shake the dust from it outside.

You can also line the trunk of a car with linoleum, this will make cleaning much easier.

Fencing for flower beds

Any summer resident will benefit from linoleum fencing. They not only prevent soil from falling out of flower beds, but also perform a decorative function.

Dig a small trench around the perimeter of the flowerbed and place vertical pieces of linoleum, making a border. Fill the bottom with soil and compact it. Make the edge curly by cutting it into semicircles or teeth.

A fence in the shape of a basket woven from strips of linoleum looks even more impressive. To make it, sticks or metal rods are dug in around the perimeter, which are braided with strips of finishing material 10-15 cm wide. A stylized handle is attached to the top.

Linoleum on the kitchen countertop.

Handmade is at the peak of popularity these days. More and more often you can see restored retro chairs, cute coffee tables, and kitchen sets. What does linoleum have to do with it?

Yes, despite the fact that this is excellent protection from direct sunlight, the best, from destructive precipitation. You can put linoleum on the kitchen table. Linoleum laid on a kitchen countertop will protect the base, because the flooring does not absorb moisture, but leaves it on the surface. This makes cleaning much easier and faster.

Orthopedic mat for a child

A children's orthopedic mat is not cheap. Make it yourself using a piece of linoleum as a base.

Cut out a rectangle of the desired size, wash and dry thoroughly. Using liquid nails, glue plastic bottle caps, buttons, pieces of thick rope, and round smooth stones. Wait until the glue has completely dried and invite your baby to walk on the new rug. The brighter, more elegant and interesting the selected material, the greater the chance that the child will like the product.

What can be made from leftover linoleum: a selection of interesting ideas with photos

Those who have laid linoleum on the floor at least once know the feeling of having to throw away completely new, shiny and beautiful pieces - the remains after trimming. I would like to use them to bring at least some benefit.

In the search for a worthy implementation of the material, sometimes you have to deal with beautiful, but ineffective methods that are misleading and do not give the desired result.

So let's find out how you can actually use leftover linoleum.

Universal superglue from linoleum: myth or reality

As I wanted to say, this method will please all craftsmen who at least sometimes have to work with glue. Because you can make this glue yourself from the same leftover linoleum that could not be used for so long. And it is suitable for a wide variety of materials and has already been popularly called “miracle glue.”

It is assumed that the linoleum is cut into small pieces, filled with technical acetone and set aside for 10 hours

So the girl in the video says that you can make glue from linoleum, and it’s very simple.

Video: Tatyana tells how to make and apply linoleum glue

In fact, everything is completely different. Modern linoleum does not dissolve in acetone, and therefore glue cannot be obtained from it.

PVC linoleum does not dissolve in acetone

Linoleum used to be different. Made from natural ingredients combined with acetone, it actually turned into glue. But glyphthalic linoleum (as it was called) was discontinued in the 1950s.

Video: nothing worked

But don't despair, if you like to walk between old, abandoned or demolished houses, you may be lucky enough to find that real glypthal linoleum from which you can make glue.

How to use leftover linoleum: useful crafts and devices

Chemical experiments did not end in a vacuum. But crafts and useful devices made from linoleum are definitely suitable.

Balcony rug

Sometimes, after repairs, quite large pieces of linoleum remain. If the size of the rest allows, then you can think of nothing and lay a continuous covering on the balcony. But most often the cladding turns out to be too tight even for a small balcony. In this case, you can make a carpet from it:

  1. Cut the linoleum into 10cm squares. Sizes vary, but smaller pieces will take longer to assemble into one piece, and those that are too large in a small area will look worse.
  2. Using an awl, make several holes along the edges of each square. On all elements they should be at the same distance from the corners.
  3. Connect the squares together using a gypsy needle and jute thread. The edges of the squares should touch but not overlap. With the thread taut, tie the ends into a knot on the right side of the piece.

    You can buy jute thread in craft stores.

  4. Once all the squares are connected, trim the edges of the jute threads so that they are the same length. The decorative carpet for the balcony is ready.

    The original carpet is made from the remains of linoleum and jute

Soft rug made from old fabrics

Required material:

  • scissors
  • pieces of old (unnecessary) fabrics, maybe old clothes
  • bath mat (with holes)

1. Cut the fabric into small strips

2. Using tweezers or a hook, begin pushing the strips through the holes.

3. Tie all fabric strips with a simple knot.

Ways to use leftover linoleum after repair

Sooner or later, repairs come in a person’s life. Sometimes it even affects the floor. Despite the presence of a large number of different coatings in the modern world, linoleum is very popular among owners. At the end of the work process, many pieces of material remain, everyone knows this. What to do with them? In fact, there are many wonderful creative uses.

Paths in the garden

The simplest thing you can use linoleum on is garden paths. They are ideal for the garden. The material will be a good option for getting rid of weeds - due to its density, plants will not be able to break through the ground. You can even lay the pieces in greenhouses, just be careful after rain, because the paths will get wet and become quite slippery.

Base

If you are forced to store construction and other materials on the same summer cottage, then linoleum will serve as an excellent bedding and will protect you from a number of difficulties. In addition, it can be placed under the bottom of the inflatable pool if you are going to install it. A simple construction will save it from punctures.

Flowerbed

Use your imagination and create a beautiful flower bed. It can be beautifully decorated; your imagination plays a big role here. Shape, size - choose everything to your taste. In addition to linoleum, you can use plastic bottles, which are also not difficult to find many uses in decoration. If a simple flower bed is enough for you, then you can simply block off the finished structure with linoleum, making it a kind of border.

Linoleum is an excellent material, ideal for creating decor. A pond made from it will look especially good, which will definitely decorate your site. All the neighbors will be delighted, as will you.

Upholstery

Many people have some old furniture at their dacha; it should be protected from possible damage. If you want to find a new use for items, then immediately think about whether linoleum could be useful. For example, if you wanted to make a workbench from an antique table, then linoleum upholstery will come in handy. You can also use it to protect furniture standing on the street so that it is not afraid of any rain or snow.

Outdoor toilet

You can't find better material to finish the interior decoration of a toilet in a country house. It will undoubtedly become visually more pleasant and cleaner. If you do not take into account the beauty, then from a practical point of view it is also good - it will close all the small cracks and holes.

Crafts

Linoleum can act as cardboard - it’s convenient to cut out any figures from it, make various crafts with children, and even origami if you really want to.

Floor covering

You can make a floor covering from many linoleum scraps of different shapes, colors and sizes. You use the material for its intended purpose, but at the same time show creativity.

Surprisingly, linoleum is easy to turn into glue, and it is very strong. To do this, you must find out the type of linoleum, and only then turn to the Internet for help, there are many manufacturing methods.

Plaster

You can make plaster from the resulting glue. To do this, mix it with chalk in a 1:2 ratio. The resulting mixture is good for sealing cracks and depressions in the floor, as well as in the walls.

Roof installation

From small pieces of material you need to cut out squares of a suitable size that will serve as a lining for the nails.

Car repairs

You can't fix a car with linoleum, but if problems arise and you have to look under the bottom, you can lay it under your back.

Car mat

Linoleum will make a good car mat. It is convenient because it will keep the interior clean, and if it gets dirty, it can be easily washed off.

Booth upholstery

Linoleum can act as insulation. It is necessary to sheathe the booth with it from the inside. This way, rain and snow will not get through the cracks, and the dog will always be warm.

Upholstery

At the dacha there are always several benches and tables. They are made of wood, less often of other materials. To protect the wood, products are painted, this allows them to be given a decorative look. Additionally, tabletops and benches can be upholstered with pieces of linoleum. It’s more pleasant to sit on, and you can wash and dry it without any problems. Linoleum is resistant to moisture and sunlight. If the remains of linoleum are small and of different shades, then you can lay out a mosaic and secure it with a furniture stapler. The only drawback of this method is that the wood under such a coating is quickly affected by rot and mold. It is recommended to remove the cover for the winter.

How to make a rug "French bracelet"

Required material:

  • old fabric of 2 colors (you can use old T-shirts). The width of each piece of fabric is 20-25 cm and the length is 3 meters. If you are using old T-shirts, you can join several pieces together with a thread and a needle.
  • scissors
  • needle and thread
  • adhesive tape

1. Arrange 5 strips of different colors in the order in which you want them to look on the future carpet.

2. Next to the 5 laid out strips, place another 5 strips in a mirror image.

3. Take the first strip, in this case the pink one, and tie it as shown in the image. First, fold the fabric to form a number 4.

4. Continue tying the pink strip around the remaining strips until you reach the middle.

5. Start doing the same on the opposite side, tying another pink stripe around the other 4 stripes. Start also with the number 4, but in a mirror image.

6. When the two pink stripes meet in the middle, tie them together.

7. Repeat the same with the subsequent remaining strips. Choose the length of the rug yourself.

8. Start another rug, choosing the same colors. After this, connect both rugs with thread and needle.

Tip: If you wish, you can make one or more similar rugs, which can then be sewn into one large rug.

9. Excess parts can be cut off and the ends secured with thread to prevent them from unraveling.

Stylish and easy to make quilted rug

Children playing on rugs in the shape of large leaves resemble cute characters from Andersen's fairy tales and feel very comfortable on them!

Sewing a small leaf-shaped blanket is easy, even with a household sewing machine.

What can replace a mouse pad?

It turns out that there are no irreplaceable things. And the stand can also be replaced with what you have on hand. For example:

  • notebook;
  • tiles;
  • thick cardboard;
  • glossy magazine wrapped in a file.

  • A mouse pad will make your work at the computer easier.
    For laser models, mats with any surface are used: from glass to leather. The trajectory does not change and the speed of response to commands does not change either.

    Specialized computer hardware stores offer various options for mouse pads.

    And for optical ones, it is better to use accessories with a matte surface, otherwise the mouse may “slip.” You should not take a fabric stand either, since the beam will be “held up” between the fibers.

    Prices for such accessories are often unreasonably high. Therefore, we suggest combining business with pleasure and making a mouse pad with your own hands.
