Instead of throwing out old blankets, here are 11 smart ways to reuse them around the house.

It's not always easy to part with old things. Has your favorite blanket become old and has scuffs and holes in its surface? And still it’s a pity to give it up? This is not surprising: we spend a third of our lives with him! So what to do? Do not throw it away under any circumstances! It is much more interesting to change his fate.

Box decor

Pillowcases and sheets can be used to decorate cardboard boxes. You can easily decorate unsightly brown boxes with fabric, thereby ensuring order and comfort on the shelves. Updated boxes will become useful storage for underwear, socks and small accessories.

Before throwing away your old bedding, consider whether the fabric can be reused: you may be able to create an exclusive or useful item for your home without spending a penny.

Clothes made from blankets

Our latitudes have low temperatures for more than half of the year. Therefore, demi-season clothing needs to be replaced more often than other things. Children who are growing a lot for the next cold weather will really like new eye-catching outfits.

And fashionistas will be attracted not only by the unique appearance, but also by the low price of new things.

Craftswomen with imagination can make a poncho from a blanket.

Warm fleece is suitable for making the lining of a student's jacket.

What she made from old pillowcases is beyond praise... Imagination has no limits!

Recently I was visiting one of my school friends. She is currently on maternity leave and has two mischievous twins growing up. It cannot be said that she has a lot of free time, but what Olga did simply amazed me. What a find! Probably every housewife still has old sheets and pillowcases that have already gone out of use, but it’s a pity to throw them away. They are often used as rags, but there are more sophisticated ways to reuse such fabric.

Second life for old things

Nowadays, reusing old things has become fashionable to reduce the amount of waste and significantly reduce the cost of purchasing new items. Who would have thought…

Patchwork Quilt

To make a quilt, you need to sew multi-colored pieces of fabric and put pieces of cotton wool between them. If you choose bright patches, then overall you can get a very stylish bedspread that will decorate any room.

It is believed that the patchwork style is quite monotonous. But by playing with colors, patterns and textures, you can create a wide variety of decorative and interior elements: soft and delicate, autumn-warm or, conversely, bright and funny.

Children's tent And here is the craft that I saw while visiting a friend. Simply amazing, isn't it?

What could be better for children than their own tent, and what’s more, made by their beloved parents! True, to build such a structure, mom and dad will have to work hard.

Bright sheets are ideal for a children's tent, although plain white sheets will also fit perfectly into the interior.

Woven rug for the floor As you can see, it’s not so difficult to make a bright rug for the bathroom or hallway from sheets. To do this, you will need several multi-colored canvases, a base frame for the rug, a sewing machine and a little patience.

To create such a colorful rug, you need to cut a sheet into small strips, twist them into many braids and attach them to the base. The work is a little labor-intensive, but the result is gorgeous!

After viewing these photos, you will definitely think about whether or not to throw away your old pillowcases and sheets. I would be glad if these ideas inspire you to create your own original products.

Curtains

Curtains made using the patchwork technique will become the highlight of the interior. To make them you will need different pieces of fabric. You can use old pillowcases, duvet covers, sheets.

Trinket box

From a cardboard box and a pillowcase you can make a box like this, which is good for storing toys, threads, medicines and other things.

Pillowcase without sewing in 3 minutes!

Sew mattresses for children!

This is a very original idea for making useful crafts for the home. You will need simple materials, your desire, enthusiasm and minimal sewing skills.

These lounger mattresses are very practical and you can make them for adults too - in this case, you just need to take into account the length of the fabric and the number of pillows. In addition to using them at home, you can also take them with you to nature and any other trips. After all, they are compact, easy to fold and easy to wash.

So, are you already eager to get started?

Then go ahead!

You can buy pillowcases or sew them yourself. You will need about 4-5 pieces. Their color, print and fabric can be completely different, because it all depends on your taste and preferences. Next, these pillowcases need to be sewn together, and the holes for the pillows should be on one side - place them all on one side.

You can also make the pillows yourself, or, in my opinion, it will be much easier to buy about 4-5 of the simplest and most inexpensive pillows. Insert the pillows into the resulting compartments from the pillowcases, and you're done! That’s how simple, quick, inexpensive, and most importantly, WITH YOUR OWN HANDS, you can make a mattress for all occasions.

As far as you can already understand, caring for it is simply elementary - take the pillows out of the compartments, throw the pillowcase cover into the washing machine - and that’s it!

How to sew a blanket from sweaters without felting

It is not at all necessary to cut the fabric into squares; a blanket made of sweaters will look interesting with both stripes and triangles - a flight of imagination will suffice.

  • Machine knitted sweater before work.
  • We remove the sleeves. There's no point in trying to undo the seams if they're overlocked. But if the knitting is done by hand, you can unravel the seam and you will save the fabric from “spilling” the edges.

  • This jacket did not have to unravel the side seam. Sweaters can only open one side seam.
  • Prepare a template for cutting out motifs, so the work will go faster, and the squares without distortions will be much easier to sew. A roller knife is an ideal tool for this kind of work, but safety precautions should come first - it is very sharp.
  • A ready-made square motif for a future blanket.

  • Loose sleeve. We also try to cut out as many squares as possible from it, we try to leave the side seams on the canvas untouched.

  • Ready-made motifs for a blanket.

  • Lay out ready-made motifs before stitching and combine. You can outline a schematic drawing of the blanket in advance and follow it - counting the number of motifs that will have to be cut.

  • We stitch together the motifs, preferably with double stitching.

  • Ready-made blanket with lining. The back seam can also be hidden under the lining, to suit your taste. This blanket has seams facing out and will probably fray a bit for a while.

You can use a lot of old things for a blanket:

Skirts and jackets in endless sizes from second-hand stores, dresses and trousers. Often, such things are made of Scottish wool, but their colors have long gone out of fashion, there are abrasions and the fabric has faded a little (that is, it can no longer be used for wear, it cannot be altered).

Cozy hut for a child

Children love to hide in small shelters while playing. Feeling independent and protected at the same time, kids create a safe little world for themselves, full of fantasies and adventures.

Parents will help in the construction of a temporary hut if they throw large cloths over the backs of chairs or armchairs.

A structure in the shape of an Indian wigwam can be easily constructed from wooden slats and an old blanket.

An old blanket turns...

But the role of a warm product can be changed. Let's talk about possible transformations.

...in clothes and accessories

Clothes made from a bedspread? Why not!

Coat

Every morning in someone’s bedroom you hear “I don’t feel like getting dressed! I wish I could travel in a blanket!” And Estonian designer Marit Ilison offered a collection of coats made from old Soviet bedspreads.

Reference! The original name of the collection is “Kaamos” - literally translated “I want to sleep”, in honor of the story of the same name by A.P. Chekhov.

The colors, familiar to every Soviet person, and the velvety structure of the blanket are harmoniously combined with Swarovski rhinestones.

Each coat in the collection is made in a single copy, handmade by Marit Ilison herself and by skilled seamstresses. And one of the products is Marit’s grandmother’s former bedspread, under which the designer herself slept as a child.

You can certainly use the phrase “I went to work in a blanket today” in the literal sense!

Bag

In addition to outerwear, you can make a wonderful accessory from an old bedspread: a bag for traveling or for going to the grocery store.

It's simple: cut out a rectangle and attach handles. We know for sure that you will not encounter a person with the same bag!

...in home textiles

The ways you can use an old product are limited only by your imagination! Here are some simple ideas to get you started.

Dog toy

Take an old blanket, cut it into several neat strips and braid it into a large braid. This will save you a significant amount of money at the veterinary store!

Pet bed

Another alternative option. The bed is suitable for dogs, and if you build a secluded place (for example, with a roof), then, of course, cats will also like it.

Wigwam

Who hasn't built children's houses out of chairs and blankets! Choose a product of a suitable color, make the base from stable wooden planks. Now build a real home for little dreamers!

Children will be happy to help build the wigwam and spend many exciting hours inside!

Bedspread like grandma's

An old Soviet blanket can be turned into a patchwork style blanket (literally translated as “Product made from patches”). We offer the easiest way to make a bright little thing.

  • Cut the blanket with different patterns into 8x8 cm squares, with a 5 mm allowance.
  • Choose the shape of the future product and arrange the squares by color.
  • Sew into blocks and join using plain stripes.
  • Place the finished product in a vacuum bag and store until the warm season. Perfect for a picnic with loved ones!

Sleeping bag

Do you like to travel? You can make a sleeping bag from an old bedspread. You just need to buy a zipper.

If the ideas seem complicated to you, still don’t rush to throw away your favorite blanket. You will definitely get seats for outdoor furniture or covers for it! You can also use it as packing when moving. Wrap furniture and secure with clear film. The blanket will protect against scratches and allow you to maintain its original appearance.

TOP 9 unique ideas that allow you to create real works of art from old linen

Still wondering where to start? Indispensable things in the house will be:

  • pincushion (a kind of original organizer that can be safely used for storing pins and needles for hand and machine sewing);
  • soft seats, back cushions for chairs, armrests for sofas (floral sets of old linen are suitable for making such things);
  • women's accessories (light scarves, handbags, clutches, jewelry in the now popular retro style);
  • homemade curtains, sewn in patchwork style, i.e. from various pieces of fabric;
  • capes for cars, furniture, clothes, shoes;
  • shelves for small household items;
  • beautiful wicker jewelry (since vintage accessories are light, delicate, original, any fashionista will appreciate them);
  • soft textile envelopes for storing photographs;
  • specific vintage buttons (give clothes sophistication and novelty);
  • self-made napkins and towels for the kitchen (their practicality and decorativeness in everyday life do not need advertising; they fit perfectly into any dining room interior, making it as cozy and comfortable as possible);
  • decorating things from your own wardrobe (various ruffles, inserts, and prints look fashionable on clothes made from scraps of fabric).

Sleeping bag

During a walk in a cozy envelope, the baby will feel good from the very first days of life.

The baby will not open up at night if he is dressed in comfortable overalls.

Children's sleep on the summer veranda will become more comfortable in a portable bed in the form of a bag.

And in early spring, under a blanket with a zipper, daytime rest is possible even on the street.

Children's mobile beds, complemented with soft toy pillows, will have a beneficial effect on the time it takes to fall asleep.

Tourists and those who like to spend time hiking will benefit from a waterproof cover and a fastened hood on the sleeping bag.

Chair cushions

You can sew soft seats for chairs or stools with your own hands, using unnecessary sheets or pillowcases. Plain fabric is suitable for a modern interior style, and with a pattern - for country style. The ideal fabric would be thick linen or cotton.

Holofiber, foam rubber or padding polyester are suitable as filling - the choice depends on the desired softness. The seat of a chair or stool will serve as a template for future products. Ready-made pillows will increase your comfort and add coziness to gatherings in the kitchen.

Stylish bag

The bag is the finishing touch to the image of a young beauty. If you choose the right clothes, for example, modern jeans and a roomy blouse, then even a simple accessory will look elegant.

A roomy travel bag, indispensable on a long trip, can be made from a whole canvas or assembled from individual parts using the patchwork technique.

Kitchen textiles

A practical option for reusing old bed linen is to create kitchen towels, as well as:

  • mat for drying dishes;
  • potholders and hot stands;
  • serving napkins.

To create kitchen textiles you do not need any special skills. All you need is a sewing machine, scissors and accuracy. If you have a small child, cotton cuts can be used as a bib or napkins for dishes.

Turning an old blanket into a new one

See how you can put an old product to good use.

With your own hands

Try updating your textiles yourself. This will make your bedroom original, and your friends will admire your “golden hands”!

You will need fabric for covering . This can be a cut that suits your preferences. But be careful: the size must match your aged product !

  • Take measurements for length and width.
  • Multiply the length by two, add 2 cm to the resulting measurements for the seams. You should end up with a rectangular duvet cover with a side hole. Half the job is done!

Advice. You don’t have to choose the fabric, but use a ready-made duvet cover.

  • Tuck the old item into a homemade duvet cover and sew up the side opening.
  • All that remains is to quilt the fabric so that the product does not move inside the duvet cover. Obviously, the more stitches there are, the better the product will be!

Professional restoration

If the needlework doesn’t work out, take the bedspread to a dry cleaner or to a home textile sewing and restoration studio.

Restoration of down and wool products is different . In the first case, workers clean the filling (down and/or feather), cut and prepare the cover, and fill it. And in the second, they wash and dry the textiles, clean them of dirt and comb them out, cut out the covers, and lay out the wool.

The cost depends on the size:

  • children's (90x120) - about 1600 rubles;
  • one and a half (150x200) - 2000–2500 rubles;
  • double (180x200) - 3000 rubles.

Soft mat

Colds will not be scary for children if the floor is covered with a carpet of soft colored balls filled with cotton wool or padding polyester.

To make the homemade rug more attractive, it is decorated with bright appliqué.

A fluffy path next to your parents' bed will make waking up early more pleasant.

From cut strips that do not unravel, picturesque rugs for the hallway and bathroom are knitted or woven. If the product becomes very dirty, it is easy to replace it with a new one.

The original design idea is a homemade piece, reminiscent of a painting by an abstract artist, made from colored wool scraps sequentially glued to each other.

Decorative pillowcases

From old sheets you can create a very original pillowcase for a decorative pillow. There are many ways to decorate a product:

  • sew on the applique;
  • create flowers or waves from fabric;
  • decorate a plain pillowcase made from a sheet with paint or homemade stamps;
  • sew fabric strips to create a fringe.
