Instructions on how to seal a down jacket and a Bolognese jacket at home

Features of work during self-repair

When repairing clothes with your own hands, it is important that the arms grow from the shoulders. In addition, it will be useful to find out what material the down jacket is made of. This determines which repair method you will ultimately choose.

The most common types of damage to down jackets:

  1. Burnt holes.
  2. Smooth cut damage.
  3. A cut and a small hole, or a hole and a creeping “arrow”.
  4. A torn hole with a smooth edge or protruding threads.

Smooth cut

Advice! For most of these situations, it is recommended to contact a sewing specialist. Many holes cannot be stitched through. Often, even in order to put on a tiny patch, you need to rip and re-sew half of the product!

For home repairs, you may need many tools:

  • needles of different thicknesses;
  • threads matching the color;
  • scissors;
  • glue;
  • a piece of fabric suitable in texture, color and size;
  • sewing machine (in most cases you can’t do without it);
  • decorative elements if desired.

Inspecting the clothes

Damage, as you know, can be different. With some you can cope without much difficulty, with others you will have to tinker and show a fair amount of ingenuity.

Before you fix a hole in a down jacket, carefully inspect the item and soberly assess the size of the disaster. There are gaps:

  • in the form of straight cuts;
  • in the form of cuts with a small frayed hole at the end;
  • in the form of a scorch mark with a small hole;
  • in the form of a hole with smooth or uneven edges.

A straight cut most often occurs where the tissue has simply burst. Perhaps there was a crease or fold in this place. This is the simplest case, regardless of the location of the damage. The gluing area, if you do everything carefully, will be invisible in any case.

It's much worse if you hit a nail, resulting in a “laceration” plus a relatively smooth tear. In this case, a lot depends on the location, and you will have to act in one of two ways:

  • in an inconspicuous place - sew or tape;
  • if the hole is clearly visible, you will have to disguise it.

Important! Holes with smooth and uneven edges, as well as scorch marks, can also be eliminated in two ways - patching and appliqué.

Repair methods

  1. Installing the patch.
  2. Stitching up the hole.
  3. Sealing a torn surface.
  4. Installation of a decorative element at the site of the lesion.
  5. Complete replacement of part of the product pattern.

With your own hands, you can try to sew up a small hole in the down jacket, seal the even cut and try to remove the burnt hole.

Repairing the hole with glue

What to do when a thin, even cut appears on your jacket? Tape it up! It will be much neater than sewing it up.

Glue that will definitely fit

You should choose a product based on the composition of the fabric to be sealed. The main thing is that the glue is transparent, dries quickly and has a not too thick texture:

  • Second;
  • Moment-88;
  • Crystal;
  • most acrylic and rubber adhesives.

Moment-88

Step-by-step instruction:

  1. Align the edges of the hole and match them.
  2. Cut a strip of fabric that matches the size and color of the cut, with a seam allowance of 0.5 mm on each side.
  3. Lubricate the seam allowances with glue, remove excess with a brush or paper.
  4. Insert a strip of fabric inside the hole, smoothing the edges, securing them to the adhesive surface.
  5. Press firmly. During the setting period, place a weight on the gluing site, having previously laid a layer of dense polyethylene.

Sealing the hole

As a rule, sealing is a temporary measure. In place of the repair in the future, you can put an applique for aesthetics.

Sew up the hole by hand

Only places where factory seams diverge, holes on the wrong side and micro damage can be mended without leaving a trace.

Step-by-step instructions for making a hand seam:

  1. Perform the work with a single thread, that is, the knot is tied on the long end of the thread, the short one moves freely during the darning process.
  2. Insert the needle into the fabric from the wrong side of the gap.
  3. Make 3-4 frequent cross stitches, sewing both edges of the hole.
  4. If the hole is large, then do not tighten it further, but mend the main hole with a goat stitch: small stitches, close to each other.
  5. Fasten the thread to the knot, carefully cut off the excess.

If the damage to the down jacket is large, then only installing a patch or completely replacing part of the pattern can help bring the item back to marketable condition.

Installing the patch

What to do with a hole with jagged edges

If your down jacket is damaged with uneven edges, you will have to tinker with it. In this case, only a patch can come to the rescue:

  1. Using sharp nail scissors, trim the edges of the hole so that they are even.
  2. All frayed threads and excess fluff must be removed. You can use tweezers to do this.
  3. Cut a patch larger than the hole.
  4. Apply glue to the edges of the patch and let it dry.
  5. Carefully insert the prepared patch into the hole, gluing it from the inside.
  6. Press everything on top with a heavy object.
  7. Wait for the glue to dry.

Original recovery solutions

As a non-trivial way, you can apply design ideas and findings. The only drawback of this method is that you have to go to a studio. Not everyone is able to carefully and quietly remove a tear in a down jacket on their own.

You can fix a hole in a down jacket, especially in a conspicuous place, with several beautiful ideas:

  1. By applying a designer applique.
  2. Embroider an original design.
  3. Decorate with reflective tapes.

Important! All of these methods are suitable for repairing holes with uneven edges, burnt holes and torn out shreds. And none of them are suitable for repairing a down jacket made of eco-friendly or genuine leather!

Designer applique

Suitable for repairing down jackets of any style and style. The main thing for the owner is to choose a sketch he likes and consult with the master who will carry out the work. This is painstaking work and should be entrusted to a specialist.

The application will help:

  • beautifully hide a hole sewn up with your own hands;
  • decorate the applied patch;
  • repair torn fabric damage on any elements of the jacket;
  • when there is no patch of a suitable color to glue the hole;
  • when you urgently need to repair children's winter clothes.

Advantages of the method:

  • ready-made applications are sold in craft stores (children's in abundance);
  • you can create an individual design from beautiful threads, ribbons and ribbons;
  • looks great on the finished product, making it unique.

Curious, stylish ideas for decorating women's and men's down jackets using appliqué are shown in the photo.

Embroidery

This is a rather expensive method if it is assumed that a large piece of fabric on a down jacket will need to be decorated with a pattern.

Ready-made embroidered patterns are also sold, which you just need to stick on by ironing the fragment in place of the gap in the down jacket. The actual embroidery of the pattern on the jacket is not cheap. The work takes place on a previously patched hole, or on an already installed patch.

Materials for designer embroidery:

  • gold and silver thread (usually made in the form of an ornament, pattern or letters);
  • threads matching the main color of the product (stripes, geometry, zigzags, etc.);
  • decorative buttons, rhinestones, beads, ribbons, buttons.

The advantage of the method is that with a high level of execution it looks like native. No one will think that this was an emergency measure to seal a hole in a down jacket.

Reflective tapes

This option for repairing a down jacket is not applicable to all products, but at the same time it is simple to implement, universal (in terms of gender and age, it will suit any owner) and is not expensive to implement.

When this method is appropriate:

  • when repairing sports jackets for adults and children;
  • when repairing down jackets and overalls for children and schoolchildren; it will also become a useful element;
  • can be suitable for repairing most styles of men's down jackets made of polyester and polyamide.

Reflective tapes are applied to the holes and stitched on both sides. Of course, the hole does not choose its place and can appear in a completely inappropriate place, and nevertheless, this element of forced decor looks best on:

  • on the sleeves as stripes;
  • along the hem of the down jacket;
  • in the form of improvised “epaulets”, “cash”, edging on pockets.

Interesting! If you are unlucky enough to tear your sleeve at the very edge of the cuff, you don’t have to look for a material similar to the jacket in texture and color, but instead put on the sleeve using reflective tapes.

Preparing materials and tools

If you are wondering how to seal a down jacket at home, prepare the necessary materials and tools. You may find it useful:

  • a piece of fabric from a down jacket;
  • a piece of fabric of the same color and similar quality;
  • a piece of fabric with an adhesive layer;
  • glue;
  • threads in the color of the fabric;
  • sewing supplies;
  • tweezers;
  • labels or stickers, buttons, short zippers.

How to sew a down jacket near the seam

If the jacket is torn at the seam, there is no need to invent anything. Such a hole can be sewn up with thread. First, it is recommended to visit a haberdashery store that sells suitable threads.

It should be noted that such a gap can be eliminated even without a sewing machine. To make sewing more convenient, the jacket must be placed on the table, first turned inside out. It is important to sew so that the new line is a continuation of the old one. In this case, the seam should be as smooth as possible.

It is most difficult to sew up seams if the jacket has a lining. To make your task easier, you should make a small cut on the inside, which will also need to be stitched up.
