How to preserve chrysanthemums longer in a vase with water: advice from florists

In autumn, the season of beautiful and bright flowers - chrysanthemums - begins. In the East, they represent longevity and eternal life. This may be due to the fact that they bloom when all the plants are getting ready to go to sleep. But perhaps they are given such importance because they are very persistent when cut. Chrysanthemums last in a vase for up to 3 weeks. And with proper care, it will remain fresh for a month! We will tell you how to extend the life of a bouquet of chrysanthemums.

What you need to keep a bouquet of chrysanthemums in a vase for as long as possible: preparing water and vase

The first thing florists pay attention to is the condition of the vase. Unfortunately, decorative vases are not always thoroughly washed and disinfected, which provokes the growth of harmful bacteria. That is why, the first rule that you should know in order to preserve a bouquet of chrysanthemums in a vase for a long time is to thoroughly wash the vase with detergent, and, if possible, pour boiling water over it or expose it to direct sunlight until it dries completely for a day.

Before pouring water into the vase, be sure to rinse it.

Luxurious chrysanthemums in a vase

  • Now about the water itself. Tap water is the most unsuitable for flowers, because it contains chlorine and other chemicals. Do you want chrysanthemums to last a long time? Use exclusively purified or spring water.
  • About water temperature. You plan to preserve autumn flowers, and they logically love cool weather, so the water should not be higher than 7 C°.
  • Remember that the water in the vase should be changed every two days with fresh water, and do not forget to wash the vase. Otherwise, bacteria will grow and flowers will fade several times faster.

Flower processing

In order for chrysanthemums to last longer, you need to first look at the lower part of the stem of each flower. It must be cleaned and all damaged and dried leaves removed. Gardeners recommend removing even fresh green leaves, since they will sooner or later begin to rot in the water and quickly ruin the entire bouquet. It is also worth clarifying that green leaves will gradually draw in excess moisture. People can't see these parts of flowers through the vase anyway, so there's no point in leaving them.

What is needed for a bouquet of chrysanthemums to last as long as possible in a vase: stem cut

Wondering how long to keep a bouquet of chrysanthemums in a vase? Proper processing of the stem is the key to success:

  • Using a sharp knife or blade, make oblique cuts at a 45° angle on each stem. Remember that the purpose of this is to increase the absorption area, but cutting too long, on the contrary, will cause breakage of the stem, which will spoil the harmony of the bouquet and the plant will die faster;
  • Measure to what depth the stem goes into the water and remove all leaves that remain in the water and 2-3 cm above the water. There is no need to waste nutrients on them, and they also begin a rapid process of rotting;
  • At the bottom of the stem, make cuts with a cross 1-1.5 cm deep, this will allow the plant to absorb even more nutrients. Bend the edges slightly to leave space inside, but do not break the cuts;
  • Every time you change the water in the vase, be sure to rinse the stems under running water to prevent mucus from forming;
  • If you see that the ends have begun to age and deteriorate, feel free to trim them by 2-3 cm, and make new cuts in depth with a cross. Even if the stems look good, it is recommended to trim them once every 5 days;
  • Make sure that the stem does not crack or break, as such a flower will disappear itself and ruin the whole bouquet.

How to prevent stem rotting

To make chrysanthemums last longer, potassium permanganate will help. It must be added to the water in such an amount that the liquid acquires a very delicate light pink tint. After this, the plants will stand in such water much longer.

But you need to be extremely careful. If you add too much potassium permanganate, it will burn the stems of the plant and it will die very quickly. Also, before placing a bouquet in such water, you need to mix it thoroughly so that the color is uniform.

What you need to keep a bouquet of chrysanthemums in a vase for as long as possible: form the bouquet and choose a place

Don't know how long to keep a bouquet of chrysanthemums in a vase? Never place chrysanthemums in a vase on a sunny windowsill. Yes, flowers tolerate the autumn sun perfectly when they are in flower beds or in pots. But cut chrysanthemums quickly wither in vases on windowsills.

Chrysanthemum inflorescences deserve special attention. Cut from flower beds or buy only blooming buds. The thing is that beginners choose chrysanthemums like tulips or roses, giving preference to buds. But chrysanthemum inflorescences do not bloom after cutting. Therefore, if you want a lush, beautiful bouquet, choose the largest inflorescences on a thick, juicy stem. This flower is formed and full of strength, and this is the flower that will last as long as possible.

The color palette of chrysanthemums is amazing!

Now about the formation of the bouquet. Cool water is poured into the vase, the cuts are made and all that remains is to place the flowers in the vase. Make sure that the stems stand freely, without pressing each other, and do not crack or break under the weight of the remaining stems. Untie the ribbons, remove the paper and place the chrysanthemums so that they are well blown with air from all sides.

At night, do not forget to take the chrysanthemums to a cool place, ideally 2-3 degrees lower than in the room where they are located.
