How to quickly peel a pomegranate? The most popular methods that will help you remove the skin from the fruit in a matter of minutes.
A huge number of people refuse to buy pomegranate because it is inconvenient to clean. In fact, if you know a few tricks, you can cope with this task quite quickly.
If you also don’t know how to peel a pomegranate quickly and, most importantly, without splashing, then we present to your attention several simple and popular methods that will help you enjoy the taste of the healthy fruit without any problems.
How to choose a ripe pomegranate
Pomegranate is an excellent source of nutrition. Its grains are filled with dietary fiber, antioxidants, vitamins C, K and B, manganese, calcium, potassium and many other essential compounds.
Their culinary uses may be as follows:
- As a component of salads, including meat ones.
- For decorating many dishes and giving them a special flavor.
- For adding to porridges and puddings.
- For mixing with yoghurt or kefir.
- To prepare a healthy drink (if you add hot water and leave for a few minutes).
- As a topping for vanilla ice cream.
Pomegranate seeds can be eaten raw or used to extract juice. This fruit is harvested when ripe, completely ready for consumption (unripe harvest is not carried out, since the amount of sugar in the fruit does not increase after being cut from the tree). Pomegranates can be quite unsightly on the outside, even if they are delicious on the inside. Therefore, it is recommended to use the sense of touch first to make a good choice.
It is advisable to choose a large fruit, larger than your own palm. For comparison, you can take several pomegranates of approximately the same size and choose the one that seems the heaviest. A feeling of heaviness indicates a ripe, juicy fruit (and, conversely, low weight indicates that the grains contain little juice).
After this, it is worth conducting a visual assessment. The peel of the fruit should be dense, not wrinkled, and its color should be rich. It doesn't matter whether it's reddish brown or dark red, as long as it's not pale. It should also be free of cuts and stains. Pomegranates with uneven or wrinkled skin or visible damage should be avoided. If the purchase is made for making juice, you need to choose larger fruits.
After cleaning, you can see small grains, vaguely similar to corn, but differing in a translucent red or pink color, with a thin skin. The white membrane in which they are located should not take up too much space.
If the beans are red or pink but the seeds have turned a little brown around the edges, this product can be used. But if their flesh has turned brownish and seems too soft, the fruit will have to be thrown away. Its use may be unsafe.
Whole pomegranates should be stored away from direct sunlight in a cool place. In this form they remain suitable for consumption for several weeks. If you place the fruits in the refrigerator, they will last for two months or more.
Features of cleaning pomegranate
Before you start cleaning, you need to wash the pomegranate well. This is explained simply: any time you cut a fruit, there is a risk of introducing bacteria from the outer surface into the edible part. After washing, you can begin to clean the fruit using any technique. Regardless of the cleaning technique used, you will first need to remove the skin of the fruit. Only after this does the process of separating the juicy grains begin.
It is recommended to place the peeled grains in a deep container. Care must be taken when separating and consuming them. Pomegranate seeds dropped onto any surface and then crushed cause staining that is difficult to remove. Therefore, it is recommended to wear dark clothes when working with these fruits and use a cutting board so as not to stain the countertop.
The peeled fruit can be eaten or used in any recipe immediately, or placed in an airtight container and stored in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. From 1 pomegranate you can get about 1 tbsp. grains or 0.25-0.5 tbsp. juice, depending on the variety and degree of maturity.
There are many techniques for cleaning this fruit, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages:
Technique | pros | Minuses |
Horizontal opening into segments. | Helps to separate the fruit into natural natural segments, making it easier to extract the grains. | Requires some experience and dexterity. |
Whole cleaning | Helps to get a beautiful ball with a grainy surface. | Requires great care and takes longer compared to other methods. |
Cleaning in water | Allows you to completely avoid splashes during the process. | It is not always possible to dry wet grains completely. |
Rolling out and cutting into square segments. | Fast and easy way. | Some beans may be damaged in the process. |
Without a knife | Can be used in hiking conditions. | Splashes and drips of juice are inevitable and require significant physical effort. |
Using a ladle or large spoon. | Fast and easy way. | Requires significant physical effort. |
Using a dumpling maker, silicone and a hammer. | Allows you to completely avoid splashes during the process. | Suitable mainly for overripe fruits with dried out skins. |
Using a wooden hammer and a teaspoon. | The whole process takes about 6 simple movements. | The separated grains contain many membrane fragments, often small. |
Pomegranate dishes
Appetizers that include pomegranate will decorate the holiday table, no matter for what occasion it is served: on the occasion of a birthday, New Year, March 8 or other celebration.
In Georgia, for Christmas they always prepare chicken satsivi, one of the main ingredients of which is pomegranate.
The Pomegranate Bracelet salad looks expensive and elegant, the recipe for which we will present below. There are several options for preparing it, we chose smoked chicken.
Much less known is the “Star of the East” salad, which is also prepared from pomegranate seeds. It is served in portions. The taste is not inferior to its more famous rival and is much more useful.
“Pomegranate bracelet” with smoked chicken
What do you need:
- chicken breast (smoked) – 0.2 kg;
- pomegranate – 1 pc.;
- potatoes, beets, carrots - 1-2 pcs. depending on size;
- onion – 1 pc.;
- walnuts – 50 g;
- eggs – 2 pcs.;
- oil – 20 ml;
- mayonnaise - how much it will take (usually 1 small packet).
How to cook:
- Boil vegetables (except onions) and eggs.
- Cut the onion into cubes and fry.

Appetizers from boiled meat and chicken fillet are prepared in a similar way.
What will help in cleaning pomegranate
To peel a pomegranate and/or separate it into grains, you will need the following:
- ripe fruits;
- sharp kitchen knife;
- volumetric bowl;
- plastic cutting board;
- apron.
Pomegranate juice can really stain a wooden cutting board, so it's best to use a plastic utensil. It is recommended to wash stains that appear with vinegar or citrus juice rather than soap. Some techniques also require a ladle or large wooden spoon, as well as a sieve and filtered water.
Preparatory stage
I wrote here how to choose the ripest specimen. We will assume that you already have the best pomegranate. Before starting work, wash it thoroughly and dry it.
This is necessary even if the pomegranate is taken from a box and looks completely clean. Manufacturers often treat the surface with various chemical compounds. They do this to improve preservation and stop the formation of mold.
If the layer is not washed off, it will get on your fingers, and then on the valuable pulp. There is no need to risk your health. Rinse in warm water and soap, dry with a kitchen towel. At the same time, wash your hands.
What will you need?
It is better to clean with a knife. Take two: one with a short blade for cutting, and the other with a thin blade for processing the core.
Place a cutting board. For the “water” method, prepare a bowl. It should be of such depth that the fruit can fit into it freely.
Place a clean plate where you will put the edible “treasure”. And one more for waste.
How to open a pomegranate correctly
You can quickly peel a pomegranate if you open it correctly.
This is done as follows:
- It is required to make 3 horizontal cuts along the entire length of the fetus. There is no need to pierce the peel all the way through, you just need to pierce the peel so that the pomegranate remains intact after the cuts are made.
- Next, you need to trim the top and bottom: the skin will be removed, after which the grains should open. You need to make sure that only a small part of the grains stick to the skin. If white fragments are visible on the peeled fruit, you need to carefully remove them.
- Then you need to cut the fruit along one of the natural lines (bulges) vertically, without piercing the peel all the way through. This is necessary in order to open the fruit well.
- After this, you can open the pomegranate: with your thumbs you need to push the central cut apart and divide the fruit into 2 halves in the form of disks.
- Using the vertical cut made in the previous step, open each disk to reveal strips of pomegranate seeds.
How to peel a pomegranate so that it remains intact
Peeling a pomegranate without cutting it into pieces is one of the most difficult techniques for processing it. However, the result is very attractive. The whole fruit, peeled, looks like a large bright ball, the surface of which is made up of whole grains.
To do this yourself, you will need to follow these steps:
- At the top of the fruit (the end opposite the stalk and resembling a crown), you need to make 2 crosswise cuts, the length of which must match the width of the knife.
- Next, you need to use your fingers to separate the peel in the incised places and gently pull it out, gradually tearing it away from the fruit. Extreme care must be taken at this stage (the skins should separate on their own without affecting the grains and exposing them).
- Once all the peel has been removed, you need to carefully tear off the white membranes to expose the entire surface of the fruit.
This tutorial can only be followed using a very ripe pomegranate, the skin of which can be easily peeled.
Looking to buy
Before we discuss how to cut a pomegranate correctly and quickly, let's talk about how to choose one in the store. Experts advise to always look at the color of the peel. If it is too dark, with brown bald spots, then it is better to refuse such a purchase. The pomegranate should have a bright red, certainly dry peel. This kind of fruit will have a lot of juicy grains, and it will also be much easier to peel than an unripe or overripe fruit.
The weight of the pomegranate will also tell you about the juiciness and taste of the grains. The larger the fruit, the more grains there are. The smaller the weight of the fruit, the more hollow places there are in it. On average, the weight of a ripe juicy fruit is seven hundred grams.
The “crown” on its top can tell about the ripeness of a pomegranate. The flower at the top of the fruit must be fully opened, dry and brightly colored. If the pomegranate has a greenish tip, then it is an unripe fruit and is not recommended to be taken.
Cleaning in water
You can peel the fruit in water:
- Fill a large bowl with fresh, cool water. It must be filtered or boiled, since the fruit grains from it are supposed to be used for food. Add enough water to completely cover the pomegranate.
- Next you need to make a shallow cut on the grenade. There is no need to trim the top or bottom of the fruit if you just want to separate the grains. It is enough to make a superficial cut on the pomegranate peel. There is no need to cut deeply as this may damage the grains.
- Use your thumbs to separate the pomegranate into 2 halves. Both parts should be roughly equal, but if they aren't, that's okay.
- If you want to separate the grains as quickly as possible, you can make 2 additional shallow cuts on the fruit parallel to each other, and then divide it into 4 parts. This will open up more surface area so cleaning will take less time.
- Then you need to place the two halves in water. After they have been in the water for a few minutes, the white parts, called the pith, can be seen to separate from the fruit pieces on their own. When this happens, the grains will be opened.
- The white core will begin to float, and the grains will sink to the bottom. It is necessary to push them with your fingers if they do not separate on their own. When most of the grains have separated, you can turn the peel over and remove the remaining grains by hand. At the end of this step, you will be left with empty peel halves that look like two upside-down mushroom caps.
- After this, you need to remove pieces of peel and white core from the surface of the water and throw them away. Then you need to slowly drain the water and drain the grains onto a kitchen strainer.
Instructions on how to peel a pomegranate in water. - This will help bring them together and dry them for later use in recipes.
Selecting grains
And now we’ll tell you how to peel a pomegranate if you don’t need slices, but the seeds themselves! You will get the “filling” of the fruit without losing the healthy juice!
Here's what to do:
- Take a cutting board, a sharp knife and a bowl for the grains.
- Place the washed fruit on a cutting board and cut off the top with a knife.
- Make four shallow cuts on the peel so that you get equal-sized slices.
- Take the fruit in your hands, press on it (preferably in the center) and divide into four pieces.
- Carefully “turn out” the resulting slices - the grains will begin to separate from the peel themselves.
- Place the grains in the prepared bowl.
How to clean in 30 seconds
You can peel a pomegranate quickly – in 30 seconds – in just 3 steps.
This is done as follows:
- Roll the pomegranate on a cutting board to loosen the grains, pressing firmly with your palm.
- Then you need to place it on the board with the fleshy side down (the stalk and tip should be located on the sides). It is recommended to place a paper towel under the fruit and wear rubber gloves to avoid getting your hands and kitchen surfaces dirty.
- Next, you need to make 3 shallow cuts 0.6 cm deep (in the middle, top and bottom). First, you should cut the fruit in the center, and then on the sides at an equal distance, only along the red part of the peel, being careful not to damage the grains. The inside of the fruit should remain intact.
- After this, it is necessary to cut off the upper and lower parts of the fruit (from the side of the stalk and the tip) completely. There should be visible grains on the cut (if not, you will need to carefully cut off the entire white layer until they open).
- You need to turn the pomegranate over with the cut side facing you, and then make 3 new shallow cuts located perpendicular to the ones already made. In this case, the depth of each of them should not be more than 0.7 cm, so as not to damage the grains.
- Finally, you need to insert your thumbs into the central cut, then tear the pomegranate into 2 halves. Next, you need to similarly pry up the two remaining shallow cuts and divide the fruit along them.
- The result will be several small pieces of pomegranate that will reveal all the grains. You can separate them with your hands or eat them as is, biting them off from the membranes.
In 6 movements
You can quickly peel a pomegranate in just 6 light movements.
This is done very simply:
- Using a sharp knife, cut the pomegranate into two equal halves and place them cut side down on the table.
- On the back side of each of them, it is necessary to apply 3-4 strong blows with a flat, blunt object (for example, a wooden hammer), distributing the impact over the entire surface in order to knock out most of the grains.
- Next, turn the fruit halves over and remove the remaining grains with a teaspoon.
Recommendations
Tip 1. For this option, it is better to cut larger pieces of pomegranate; it will be more convenient to hold them under the mold.
Tip 2: Don't hit the silicone mold too hard with a hammer. The material from which it is made is not intended for “attack”.
We have shared with you ways on how to cut a pomegranate correctly. Photos of methods are attached. We hope that they were useful, and now you will not pass by the shelves with this fruit in the store. Don't be afraid to experiment with pomegranate peeling methods; treat yourself to a healthy vitamin set that contains this wonderful fruit.
Without a knife
You can quickly peel a pomegranate without a knife only with some experience and physical effort. Since the peel of this fruit is hard, in any case you will need a sharp object that can be used for cutting. In camping conditions, a kebab skewer or a hard thin stick can be used. However, after using them, it is recommended to rinse the fruit with clean water.
This technique is also suitable for home cooking, however, when using it there is a high probability of numerous splashes and drips:
- It is necessary to pierce the middle of the “crown” of the fruit with the handle of a tablespoon and push it in until it stops.
- Next, you need to shake it in different directions until the inside of the fruit is divided into parts along the membranes.
- After this, you should stick your fingers into the widened hole and tear the fruit. This will require significant physical strength.
Using a ladle
You can quickly peel the pomegranate using a ladle or large spoon as follows:
- You need to make a cut on the surface of the pomegranate with a depth of about 5 mm along its entire middle (“along the equator”). As soon as the white part is clearly visible around the entire circumference, you need to tear the fruit in half with your fingers (this will require considerable force).
- Next, you need to place one half, cut side down, over the bowl, holding it firmly with your hand. Using a large spoon or ladle, tap the top of the peel firmly and shake the piece of fruit, then turn it a quarter turn and repeat the tapping. You need to knock on every centimeter of the surface to ensure complete separation of the grains.
- The same should be repeated with the second half of the pomegranate.
- Then you need to manually remove any small pieces of white pith that have fallen into the bowl. Separated pomegranate seeds can be consumed immediately or stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
Some people think this technique doesn't work because they only lightly tap half the fruit. Considerable effort is required. If you tap lightly, the beans will not separate and release. To collect them neatly, you will need a wide bowl. You can place it in a bowl or sink to prevent grains from spilling and making a mess.
Cleaning the pomegranate with a ladle
This home method of cleaning pomegranates is quite unique; you need to act carefully so that splashes do not fly all over the kitchen. It is also important to protect your hands with gloves.
Here's how to extract pomegranate seeds:
- after thorough washing, you need to cut off the peel from the top of the fruit, removing all the plates under it;
- now you need to cut off the bottom, approximately to the level of the grains;
- cutting only the peel, you need to divide the fruit in two;
- Having placed the plate below, you need to push both halves apart with your hands so that the bones begin to fall down;
- Using a ladle, you need to knock out the remaining grains from the pomegranate peel.
This method can be called relatively easy, allowing you to beautifully and without extra effort remove the seeds from the depths of the pomegranate.
No splashing
Separating the pomegranate seeds can be done without splashing using a technique that involves several movements:
- It is necessary to cut a thin slice of the fruit (5-7 mm thick) from the top (stem side) and place the pomegranate cut side down on a cutting board so that it is placed firmly. The lower part of the fruit, which looks like a crown, should be located on top.
- Next, you need to trim the skin off the top of the pomegranate using a paring knife and making a circular cut.
- Next, you should make shallow vertical cuts along the protrusions on the outside of the fruit (they resemble ridges in appearance and are clearly visible visually). This must be done with a sharp knife, cutting only the red part of the peel continuously from the top to the bottom. You need to make about 6 cuts.
- After this, you need to carefully open the pomegranate with your fingers. It should open easily, exposing the grains and shells. It is necessary to carefully open the sections one by one. It is recommended to do this process over a bowl so that when the fruit opens, any released grains do not fly apart.
- Finally, you need to separate the grains from the skins and membranes using finger movements. You can do this over a container of water. The grains will sink to the bottom of the water, and pieces of the membrane will float to the top, making further separation easier.
Ways to cut fruit quickly and easily
There are several methods that allow you to quickly, carefully, avoiding splashing of juice, open a delicious fruit.
The most popular options are:
- cut into slices;
- cleaning in water;
- impact method;
- cutting for a fruit bouquet.
Each has its own nuances, pros and cons. A detailed description will allow you to choose the most effective one.
Important ! All methods work well when peeling ripe fruits. It will be difficult to remove seeds from an unripe pomegranate.
Popular technique with cutting into slices
This technique allows you to clean the pomegranate quickly and without contaminating the surrounding area. 30 seconds of time and a sharp knife will be enough. Step-by-step description of actions :
- choose a ripe pomegranate;
- wash it and dry it;
- take a sharp knife and carefully cut off the top;
- place the pomegranate in your palm with the cut side up;
- make cuts along each membrane with a knife;
- insert a knife into the middle part of the pomegranate;
- turn the kitchen tool clockwise.
After this, the fruit will disintegrate into segments that will be limited by membranes.
It takes a little force to separate the pomegranate.
The membranes should be removed and you can treat yourself to ripe berries . The advantage of this method is that the cleaning process takes minimal time. Disadvantages - you need to sharpen the knife very well and follow safety precautions so as not to damage your fingers.
The method of cutting into slices is described in this video:
A beautiful way for a fruit bouquet
When you need to decorate a table for a holiday or simply create a cozy mood, it is better to use a different cleaning method.
In this case, the fruit will look not only appetizing, but also very beautiful. How to do it :
- First you need to remove the peel. You can cut a “crown” on the pomegranate or use a knife to remove the top, stepping back 5 cm from the top. Then remove the coating with your hands. The second option is to cut the peel with a knife from top to bottom along the white partitions. Use your hands to open the petals of the peel.
- Clean the center of the pomegranate and remove the transparent films. If you use a toothpick, the result will be much better.
- Place the opened fruit in the form of a flower on a plate, decorate with lemon balm or mint petals. Pomegranate looks good combined with other berries and fruits on one plate.
Advantages of the technique:
- the opportunity to beautifully decorate the table;
- safety of all nutritional components.
Minuses:
- Without experience, it will take time to clean carefully;
- the need for careful removal of membranes.
Important ! If you are unable to carefully peel the berry, you can veil the pomegranate on a fruit plate using herbs or fruits.
In water
Before you start peeling, you need to wash the pomegranate and dry it with a towel. Prepare a deep bowl, pour water. Then take a knife and you can begin:
- Cut off the top.
- Make cuts on the skin, being careful not to touch the grains. The cuts should follow the lines of the segments.
- Place the fruit in a bowl of water and leave for 10-15 minutes. This technique will make it easier to peel the pomegranate.
- Break the berry along the cut line without removing it from the water.
- Remove the film from each slice and release the grains.
- Leave the grains in the water for another 2-3 minutes. During this time, the membranes will float up along with the peel, and the grains will sink to the bottom of the bowl.
- Remove debris and drain water. It is recommended to use a colander with fine holes.
- Rinse the grains again with clean water and transfer to a plate.
The advantages of this method:
- very convenient for cleaning large quantities of fruit;
- juice does not splash around;
- hands and surrounding objects remain clean.
There are no downsides to the method.
Using a spoon - percussion
First, you will need to wash and dry the pomegranate. Then:
- Cut off the top and tail at such a distance that the white membranes are visible. Make cuts along these light veins with a sharp knife.
- Turn the fruit cut side down.
- Take a tablespoon or wooden spatula and tap the pomegranate peel until the seeds fall out.
Tapping should be over the entire surface of the fruit , rhythmic, moderate and accurate.
It is good to carry out the procedure in a deep bowl. One more tip. Before tapping, place the pomegranate in a plastic bag to prevent the juice from splashing.
The advantage of the method is the high cleaning speed.
Minuses:
- you need to knock hard;
- the beans are damaged by impacts;
- Together with the nuclei, the membranes fall off and mix;
- It's hard to avoid juice splashing.
Important ! With the right selection of dishes and a little experience, you can easily peel the fruit without splashing.
How to clean dried pomegranate?
If the pomegranate peel has dried out, this does not mean that it is unsuitable for consumption. It often becomes excessively dry and dense in very ripe fruits. This peel can be peeled and subsequently used as a folk remedy for digestive problems (by preparing decoctions).
The cleaning technique is as follows:
- The pomegranate must be washed and allowed to dry naturally (at room temperature).
- Next, you need to cut it with a sharp knife into 2 equal parts across.
- Then each of the halves should be placed cut side down in turn on a dumpling maker set over a bowl, cover with a silicone baking dish and tap the surface with a kitchen hammer until all the grains separate and fall out.
- After this, you need to manually remove pieces of membrane from the bowl (or using cold water).
How to divide a pomegranate into slices?
Cutting a pomegranate into slices is not only a way to separate its seeds, but also an opportunity to present the fruit beautifully to the table.
This is done like this:
- You need to place the fruit on a cutting board. Since it contains a lot of juice, which can stain the surrounding surface, it is better to cover it with a clean cloth.
- Next, cut off the top of the fruit. After this, the fruit should have the shape of a cone.
- Then you need to feel the protrusions on the surface of the pomegranate and make a continuous vertical cut in the peel along each of them. In this case, the knife blade should not go too deep so as not to damage the grains. It is necessary to cut only the red layer of the peel until its white interior is exposed.
- After this, use your fingers to carefully separate the pomegranate along the cuts made. If you do not trim the bottom of the fruit, the separated segments will remain attached to the center. In this form, the pomegranate will resemble an open flower.
A way to get rid of fruit peels for the laziest
The fastest way for the lazy and those who don’t want to force themselves to bother with peeling the fruit is to peel it with your hands. There is no need to look for special sharp knives in the kitchen. However, the juice of this fruit can end up everywhere: in your hands, on the table, on the chair. Therefore, it is best to do these manipulations in the kitchen, after putting on an apron.
The essence of this method is this:
- The pomegranate is washed in running water and dried thoroughly. This is a mandatory action, since many pathogenic bacteria can get into it on the market.
- Then the top is cut off with a knife.
- Using your hands, break the fruit into two parts, and the halves into several more parts.
But this fruit is very juicy, if, of course, it is ripe, and no matter how carefully you try to cut it into halves, the juice can still splash and stain the walls or floor. There is another way by which you can remove the peel so that not a single drop and not a single grain escapes from it. Let’s look in detail at how to properly peel a pomegranate: quickly and effortlessly!
How to remove seeds from pomegranate?
The only way to remove seeds from pomegranate seeds is to squeeze the juice out of them. This is done using various techniques, all of which are available at home.
Using a juicer
To squeeze into a juicer, you will need to first cut the fruit in half. It is recommended to use a device with a hand press to extract pomegranate juice. When using an electric juicer, you will need to be careful not to let the membrane get into the finished product (otherwise it will acquire a bitter tint). The resulting juice should be strained through a colander or sieve lined with gauze.
Using a blender
It is necessary to place 1.5-2 tbsp. pomegranate seeds into a blender bowl and beat until liquid.
The resulting mass must be filtered using a fine-mesh sieve covered with several layers of gauze.
By squeezing
The fruit must be placed on a hard surface, pressed with the palm of your hand and gently rolled to crush all the grains inside it. When the cracking noise stops being felt, you need to pierce the peel (if necessary, insert a straw into the pomegranate) and squeeze out the juice. This can be done by first placing the fruit inside a plastic bag to avoid splashing.
If you peel the pomegranate and separate the seeds, they will stay fresh for a week or more in the refrigerator in a tightly sealed container. Additionally, they can be frozen in an airtight bag for up to 1 year. However, they cannot be defrosted quickly (under hot water or in the microwave), and in any case, once defrosted, their texture will become softer. Freshly squeezed juice should be refrigerated and used within 2-3 days or frozen for up to 6 months.
