Installing a button
Sewing production involves the installation of accessories using a specialized mechanism - a press. If the enterprise has small production volumes, then they use manual equipment - these are levers or impact mechanisms. Large factories use electromechanical devices.
Installing denim buttons manually requires the following tools:
- awl - it pierces the fabric in the place where the fittings are supposed to be installed;
- hammer;
- pliers;
- bolt (if the button has a through hole);
- metal tubes to fix the floating leg.

Instructions for replacing the rivet button
If the torn button is not lost, that’s good; you can take it with you to the store to show the consultant and buy exactly the same one. If the button is lost, you need to measure the length and height of the loop: such measurements will give you at least an approximate understanding of what kind of button, what diameter and what height you will need to purchase.
If the rivet button has simply fallen off without damaging the fabric of the jeans, and both parts of the button are present and undamaged, take the end of the button and insert it into the button hole on the waistband of the jeans (the place where it fell out). After this, you need to attach its metal head to the leg of the button, then turn the jeans over, pressing the button head to a horizontal hard surface, and hit the leg with a hammer, hammering it into the head. The blow should be clearly directed, but not strong, so as not to deform or damage the button.
If the button flew off “with meat” and the fabric of the jeans waistband itself is damaged, then first you need to put a patch “on the wound”. Using a patch cut from a piece of denim fabric (preferably the same as your jeans), we completely cover the damaged section of the belt on both sides and stitch it several times by machine or by hand. Then we carry out the manipulation of installing a rivet button on the leg on the belt.
If you have no luck with these metal buttons or you just don't like them, you can try matching a regular button to your jeans. Properly sewn, they last quite a long time, are easier to fasten, and in the event of an “accident” they are easy to replace. My only wish: be careful about the size when purchasing such a button - it must be exactly matched to the size of the buttonhole. A button that is too small will not hold the jeans fastened, especially if it is not a loose-fitting model. A button that is too large will cause daily discomfort.
Rivets for clothing are an inconspicuous but irreplaceable element of every item, from sheepskin coats, fur coats and jackets to underwear. Even expensive branded clothing is often equipped with low-quality fittings: clips, hooks, zippers. Very often, decorative rivets come off, and an expensive item becomes unwearable. In order not to seek help from a clothing repair shop, you need to learn how to work with a variety of sewing accessories yourself.
Additional tips and tricks
On these clothes, fasteners with a broken rod are often damaged. Such products are constantly subjected to high loads. As a result, they simply fly off the rod. This is considered their main disadvantage.
To change the rivet, first of all, you will have to get rid of its remains. The procedure can be carried out using a side cutter. You are also allowed to use pliers. It is recommended to remove residues in one motion. You can install a new rivet using standard technology.
In this case, you should follow these recommendations:
- If the fabric is not damaged, you can purchase new accessories, then place the button stem in the recess and place the metal cap on top. Then turn the clothes over and press the hat to the table. The surface must be smooth and hard. After this, hit the rod well with a hammer. This will help secure it.
- If the fabric is damaged in the area where the rivet is located, it is recommended to first make a patch. It is made of denim material to cover the problem area well. The patch should be sewn manually or by machine. Then it is recommended to install the rivet.
If the rivets do not hold well or are constantly lost, you should choose an ordinary button. This should be done very carefully. The button must match the size of the eyelet. A piece that is too small will not securely hold the jeans buttoned up, and a piece that is too large will cause daily discomfort.
Repairing a button on jeans is fairly easy. However, first of all, it is recommended to determine the type of fittings and select the best option. After this, you need to select the type of repair and strictly adhere to the required sequence of actions.

How to replace a button on jeans?!
On the jeans belt, mark the location of the button:
If the stud of the previous button remains in the fabric, then try to pull it out with pliers.
Then take the stud of a new button and pierce the belt with the point from the wrong side, so that the stud comes out on the front side at the control point.
Take the button and turn it upside down. Aim the point of the nail directly at the hole on the button.
Attention! Place a soft cloth under the button to prevent damage to the surface of the button.
Attention! It is better to perform this procedure on a flat and hard surface. The floor is better suited for this.
Check the quality of the work done and the functionality of the fastener.
The button on the jeans is ready!
In this simple way, you will quickly cope with trouble and cheer yourself up. A little advice for the future: if your jeans did not come with a spare button, try to purchase one in advance. So that in case of an unforeseen situation, it will always be at hand.
Buttons on jeans are most often made in the form of a metal rivet. This, of course, protects such a button from quickly coming off, however, if such a rivet has come off, this sometimes becomes a real problem. Not only can you not sew such a button simply with a needle and thread, but they also often not only come off, but are literally torn out “with meat”, which, of course, also complicates the process of repairing a denim fastener.

What you need to install or repair buttons on clothes
Before starting work, you should prepare:
- awl - as an auxiliary tool for marking holes and rolling edges;
- a set of punches - to create a neat hole in the fabric;
- pliers - for securing the fastener;
- hammer - to secure the structure;
- anvil - for placing a rivet on it.
It is best to purchase them from a professional store, since the quality of the tools must be high. Otherwise, damage to the buttons or their unreliable fastening is inevitable.
The durability of the tongs depends on the metal.
When purchasing, you should pay attention to whether they bend so that there are no problems in the future. If you don’t have a special tool, you can get by with a minimal set that can be found in any home:
- pliers;
- hammer;
- punch or screwdriver;
- metal knitting needle;
- wooden block;
- rubber.
If you need to sew on a button, you will need a needle and thread that matches the color of your clothing.
Installing broken-shank buttons
You can install such fittings on a smooth, all-metal or hollow nail. Here the work is complicated by the mobility of the button, and the smoothness of the nail makes it difficult to install.
To make the task easier, you can take a tube that has the diameter of a floating leg. The tube is placed on the stem and thus the latter is fixed in a level position. All that remains is to install the nail.
There are special kits that include plastic presses - fasteners; with their help, the process of installing a button is greatly facilitated.
Varieties
Clothes buttons differ in the material they are made of:
- metal;
- plastic.
According to the method of fastening they can be:
- installation - secured using special tools;
- sewn - to attach them you need a thread and a needle.
Depending on their form, purpose and application, they are divided into:
- simple;
- s-shaped;
- shirts;
- magnetic;
- clasp;
- holsters;
- straps;
- tablet
O-shaped
The most common type of buttons is o-shaped. They are called simple, ring or flight, because the fastener first appeared on jackets and overalls of pilots. The design is not complicated and consists of two metal parts that fit tightly into one another. The upper component has a spring fastening.
Simple buttons are used both on different types of everyday clothing and on specialized textiles.
S-shaped
This type is of the spring type. One of the parts resembles the letter “S”, which is why they are called s-shaped. Depending on the size they are divided into several types:
- uniform - the size of the top ranges from 27 to 40 mm;
- article - half the size of the uniform;
- anorak - compact size;
- mini anorak - the upper part is less than 8 mm.
The shape of the top is varied - from flat and round to diamond-shaped, square, drop-shaped. They are fixed by sewing or fastening. The large spring allows it to withstand heavy loads.
Shirt
Shirt-type buttons differ from regular ones in the way they are fastened - not with a single pin, but thanks to 6-8 spikes. The design allows fastening fasteners on fabrics of light density. They are suitable for children's clothes, knitwear and knitted clothes, light summer jackets.
The devices are convenient to use, but quite expensive to manufacture. During installation, the material is pierced with spikes located on the ring. Their diameter varies from 9.5 mm to 40 mm. The largest ones are used on jackets.
Magnetic
Self-fastening magnetic fasteners are most often used in household products - bags, outerwear, wallets. They are convenient to use, but they are expensive to produce. The connection strength thanks to the magnet is high, and it is very easy to unfasten even with one hand. The magnetic button device includes four parts - two bases and the same number of mounting flanges. The magnet allows you to automatically select the position and close. The larger the fastener size, the greater the connection force.
Koburnaya
This type has another name - tablet. They have been produced since the times of the USSR, when they were necessary for fastening military haberdashery. The lower part of the structure is very similar to the part of the s-shaped device. The top of the lock is hollow inside, petal-shaped. Its size is 12 mm. When the button is fastened, it expands and contracts. Most often, the fasteners are nickel-plated, but they can have two more color variations - black and brown.
Clamp or block
On the cover of the clamp or block button there is a ring fastening. This is the main distinguishing feature of the clasp. Through the hole in its upper part you can see the fasteners. It is similar to a similar s-shaped part, but is significantly larger in size. The most common clasp sizes are 8-21 mm.
General principle
Buttons are a useful invention. They were first used in France in 1885 for leather goods: shoes, gloves, bags. Today, buttons are inserted into jackets, overalls, children's bodysuits, pockets and even underwear. They securely hold the edges of the fabric and at the same time can be completely invisible.
What you need to know about the buttons:
- "Mom and Dad". This is what people call the upper and lower parts of the button (which can also consist of several parts). The “male” has a protruding pin that fits into the “male” - a metal part with a recess and a beautiful “face”. They are located on opposite sides of the fabric. The “mother” is always installed on the upper part of the product, and the “father” is placed on the bottom. As planned, the pin should fit in and out of the recess.
- If the rivets are not sewn, they consist of several parts. Usually “mother” and “father” have 2 parts each. They are collected during the installation process. There is no need to do this in advance.
- Insert non-sew buttons into the holes. They should be narrow and the fabric should be dense. If there are already holes, but they are torn or frayed, they are strengthened with silicone glue, non-woven fabric or sewn with thread. If there are no holes, use a special punch or awl. As a last resort, you can punch a hole with a thin nail. You can’t cut it with scissors: sooner or later the fabric will come apart and the button will start to fall out.
- The button is assembled after installation on the fabric. The metal parts are inserted into the hole, checking for the correct location, and then pressed tightly against each other. Ideally, a press and special attachments are used to connect parts, which allow you to flare (flatten) the required parts of the button. After flattening, one piece fits tightly onto the other.

Button device
Before we talk about how to change a button on jeans, it’s worth finding out what this hardware is. The hat and stud directly form a denim button, but it can already have different sizes and methods of fastening.
The button shape is determined by the cap:
- square;
- round;
- square with rounded corners;
- hexagonal
The most convenient shape is considered to be round; they are the ones that are easy and quick to thread into the loops.
The following hats are found:
- convex;
- concave;
- straight;
- semicircular.
Dimensions are determined by diameter and range from 14 to 40 mm.
Removing a construction rivet
It is difficult to call this action dismantling as such. This is removal. To remove the rivet, you will need the regular rivet gun that was used to install it. But since you don’t have one at hand, it’s worth figuring out how to rivet a rivet without a riveter.
You can try to remove rivets in which the head or bent part protrudes above the plane of the riveted parts with a sharp chisel and hammer:
- Place the cutting part of the chisel exactly under the head (or bent part).
- Hit the chisel with a hammer. Some large rivets may take several hits to break off.
- Once the head (or bent part) is torn off, all that remains is to remove the rivet from the hole. This can be done by pushing it out with a nail or other thin object (for example, a screwdriver).

But more often you cannot get to the caps and curved parts, since they are, as it were, in the body of the parts being fastened. At the factory, special grooves are drilled for the caps and expanding parts in the parts, and then the rivets fit into the metal like a glove. How to rivet rivets in such a “tricky” case?
Here a screwdriver (or drill) with a metal drill selected for the diameter of the rivet will come to the rescue. Proceed as follows:
- Using a core, make a notch on the head of the rivet so that the drill does not wander, although some are accustomed to doing without serifs.
- Place the screwdriver bit on the head and drill out the inside of the rivet.
- When the drill goes through, the remains of the head and widened part fall out on their own.
How to restore damaged
If the metal button has stopped performing its function and is constantly coming undone, a regular hammer can help.
To do this, the convex part of the fastener is placed on a hard surface and blows are carefully applied, slightly flattening the “bump”. After each blow, you must try to fasten
Once the fixation is secure, the goal is achieved.
The plastic fastener can be repaired using an iron, tracing paper or foil. To do this, cover the convex part with foil or tracing paper and melt it a little. After the plastic hardens, try to fasten it. You can correct the melted edges of the button using a nail file.
What to do if there is no spare button
If you don’t want to look for a new rivet, and don’t have the means to turn to professional craftsmen, it is permissible to use an ordinary button instead of special fittings. It is recommended to ensure that it matches the style of the jeans and matches the diameter of the loop.
To carry out the procedure, you should perform the following steps:
- First of all, it is recommended to remove the old rivet.
- After this, the hole from it should be carefully mended. This should leave no unsightly holes.
- Sew a button next to it. It is best to use fittings on a leg.
Sometimes this type of fastener is fixed much more securely and looks much more attractive compared to standard metal rivets.

Types of Jeans Fasteners
If the torn button is not lost, then take it to the store and buy the same one. Denim fasteners can have the following diameter sizes:
- 14 mm.
- 17 mm.
- 19 mm.
- 20 mm.
- 22 mm.
- 25 mm.
- 26 mm.
- 30 mm.
- 40 mm.
Important! If the button is lost, measure the length and height of the loop to approximately determine the diameter and height of the fastener.
Depending on the type, denim fasteners can be installed on a special nail (hairpin). Jeans carnations can be of the following varieties:
- Smooth all metal. The length of the standard part is 10-12 mm.
- Smooth tubular metal. The length of the tubular product is 8 mm.
- With a circular notch.
Important! To put a button on jeans with your own hands, nails made of aluminum are most suitable. They are easy to process and are as strong as steel ones.
Depending on the type of fastener for denim, there are:
- On a stable leg without a central hole. As a rule, the metal shell of the button is filled with impact-resistant plastic. This fastener is installed on a nail with a circular notch. Rivets on a stable rod are the most durable and easiest to install.
- On a stable leg with a recess. Fastener manufacturers recommend installing them on smooth studs (all-metal or tubular). However, installing a button on jeans using solid metal studs is quite difficult, as it requires precise alignment. Therefore, it is better to use parts with a circular notch.
- On a broken leg without a hole. The button is installed on a denim pin with a smooth shaft or on a metal tubular nail.
- On a broken rod with a hole. This type of rivet is installed on a smooth all-metal or tubular denim nail.
- On a double heel. A distinctive feature of the part is the solid bottom of the leg, which is pierced with a double nail. The hairpin antennae are subsequently bent towards each other. The disadvantage of such fasteners is that one of the fastening tendrils often breaks off.
Restoring denim buttons. | club-snap.su
Nothing lasts forever, including denim buttons.
The button itself is intact and undamaged, but the fastening point has come loose or the fastening nail has broken off and the button has fallen out. It's good that I didn't get lost. Let's help your favorite denim button return to its place. Option A: Denim button on a stable cast metal leg. The base of the denim stud broke off. We clamp the button with pliers and carefully drill out the remains of the denim stud with an electric drill. Drill Ø 2mm.
Result - the remaining cloves were removed
The denim button is ready to be reinstalled.
We do the same with a plastic button in a metal shell with a broken fastening. The shaft of the denim stud remained inside the button shank. We drill it out with an electric drill. Result. If the inner hole turns out to be a little larger than a denim stud, don’t worry. Using a toothpick or match, fill the hole or use a piece from a holniten Ø 9mm. Then carefully install the button. — If a denim button simply fell out due to the destruction of the fabric, and the denim stud remained inside the button, proceed as follows: A. Drill out the old denim stud. First, we use a center punch to make a notch for the drill. We clamp it with pliers and carefully drill it out with an electric drill. Continue as described above.B. We take out the denim nail using two side cutters: One side cutter works as a support, the second as a lever Result Next: install as described above.
Attention: You should not use this method of removing a denim stud on buttons with a broken stem; you will get this result: Buttons with a broken stem can only be restored using an electric drill. Next, install in the manner described above. We also drill denim buttons made of cast metal with a through hole, and depending on the diameter of the internal hole, install them either on a holnitene part or on a tubular denim-holnitene stud. The fact is that when compressed, these parts increase in volume and firmly fix the denim button. In the absence of these parts, you will have to use a simple denim nail or which is not advisable, since it does not guarantee a strong fixation of the denim button. Denim buttons with a through hole made of thin metal are difficult to repair
You need to drill the hole very carefully so as not to touch the walls of the button. You cannot press the button itself too hard so as not to damage it. Etc. Therefore, in most cases, it is easier to install a new button than to repair an old one. But if the need arises to restore an old denim button, then you will successfully cope with this task. Please note: For ease of work, purchase side cutters with the cheeks as flat as possible, such as in the photo. Unfortunately, most of the side cutters on sale are these side cutters, with a deep notch. You will have to remove excess metal on a grinding wheel and make the surface of the side cutter flat

— There is often a need to rearrange denim buttons.
For example: in order to reduce the volume of a jacket cuff or increase (decrease) the volume of jeans in the belt. Carefully remove the button, being careful not to damage the fabric. If the denim stud does not want to come out, we bite it, then drill out the remaining stud. Punch a hole in the marking area and install the button. We cover the place where the denim button was previously installed with a suitable color and size holniten.
Patch
When the entire button falls out and there is a hole in its place, you need to make a patch. A circle of smaller diameter than the width of the belt is cut out of a thick piece of leather. In the middle of the leather patch, a hole is pierced with an awl or a thin nail, a pin is threaded through it, onto which a button is then placed. The patch remains on the inside of the belt. You can grab it with threads so that it doesn’t curl up later. But this is optional.
Hello, dear readers of the cutting and sewing website - “Sewing Circle”. In general, the question of how to change a button on jeans is not worth it. Although, if you know how to remove a button from jeans, then the material in question will be relevant in this case as well. By the way, buttons are removed from jeans using ordinary wire cutters, or, to put it more correctly, side cutters. Moreover, it is absolutely not necessary to resort to brute male power... In the example, the old button from the jeans cannot be removed. So why and how to put a button on jeans?
The question “why” is simple. Then, so as not to sew in jeans when reducing the volume of the waist and hips. It is assumed that weight loss happened, but did not take frightening forms. In this case, another button on the belt will not help. Changing your jeans will help. There is also the option of voluminous hips and a narrow waist. Or rather, their ratio. In this case, often the jeans sadly puff up at the back of the waist. The second button will solve this problem too. Voluminous hips themselves also mean that jeans will stretch faster after washing, and after a couple of days they will simply begin to slip.
Of course, you can use a belt when wearing jeans. But he can only make things worse by emphasizing this bulge that everyone will stare at ;). Many people find belts very uncomfortable and are looking for other solutions.
The proposed solution to the problem of jeans that bulge at the back of the waist is also as economical as possible.
Algorithm of actions
To fix a button on jeans, you will need: pliers, a hammer, a patch, a block of wood and an awl. All manipulations should be performed in a well-lit room. If you want to change the button to another place, making the belt looser or tighter, cut the leg with pliers and remove it from the inside. If there is a hole in the fabric, sew a patch there or carefully mend it.
- ⦁ Determine the location on the belt where the new metal button will be located. Mark it with chalk or a bar of soap.
- ⦁ Make a puncture at the attachment point with an awl, placing a wooden block under the material.
- ⦁ Insert the leg into the denim from the wrong side.
- ⦁ Place the button head on the stem and gently tap it with a hammer.
- ⦁ Pull the button by the cap and make sure that it is firmly connected to the stem.
If the new metal button is too large, you will need to trim the buttonhole a little. This can be done with a regular knife or scissors. If the button is too small, the loop can be narrowed by hemming it on one side.
To remake a button on jeans, we recommend choosing a rivet with a flat head. The stores also have rounded options, including those decorated with rhinestones. However, they may fall apart when tapped with a hammer, and the work will have to start again. If you don’t want to repair pants yourself or don’t have the necessary tools at your disposal, you can entrust this task to professionals. In the studio, specialists will quickly mend the hole in the fabric and easily install a new metal button.
How to install a denim button manually on jeans? How to remove a button on jeans?
Sizes (diameter) of denim buttons: 14mm, 17mm, 19mm, 20mm, 22mm, 25mm, 26mm, 30mm, 40mm. (Important when selecting a button for a buttonhole on a product) Depending on the type of denim button, it is installed on a special denim stud: a) with a circular notch, b) smooth all-metal, c) smooth tubular metal For manual installation, denim studs made of aluminum are more suitable , try to use only them. They are easy to process and are not much inferior in strength to steel ones.
— Types of denim buttons and how to install them.
1. Denim buttons on a stable leg
As a rule, this is a metal shell filled with impact-resistant plastic. The button is installed on a denim pin with a circular notch.
At the installation site, the fabric (skin) is pierced with a hand punch, awl or nail. Insert a denim nail. and hammer it in like an ordinary nail, but not with all your might. Denim buttons with a stable stem are the most durable and easy to install. Denim buttons on a plastic base are also produced. Without metal shell. Require special attention during installation. When driving a denim tack, precise alignment must be maintained, otherwise the button will split. It is better not to mess with such products. 2. Denim buttons on a stable leg with a hole
Button manufacturers recommend installing them on smooth denim studs. All metal or tubular. Since it is difficult to install buttons on these nails, it is necessary to maintain precise alignment; you can use a denim nail with a circular notch. We install in exactly the same way as in the case described above. But we additionally flatten the tip of the denim nail after installation. in order to finally fix the denim stud. If you install it on a smooth denim stud, it often turns out to be longer than necessary. Use pliers to shorten it to the required length. And install using a bolt with a diameter of 5mm.
We install it from the front side of the button on a metal surface.
3. Denim buttons with a broken leg
Installation should be carried out on a smooth wooden surface. Installed on a denim nail with a smooth shaft. Or on a metal tubular one. When installing a button (hammering), it is difficult to maintain alignment. You will need a tube with an internal diameter of 9-10 mm, a length of 30-40 mm and a rod - a bolt with a smooth head with a diameter of 9 mm, a length of 60 mm. If you have a 9mm socket wrench, use it. They hammered in a denim nail, checked it, and tugged at the installed button. In case of installing a denim button on a metal tubular nail, use a tube with a diameter of 10 mm or a socket wrench with a diameter of 10 mm. And in the same way we successfully install the button in the right place. It is also necessary to take into account the length of a standard denim pin, depending on the thickness of the fabric where the button is installed. The thinner the fabric, the shorter the length of the nail should be. The length of a standard all-metal denim stud is 10-12mm, the length of a metal tubular stud is usually 8mm. If necessary, shorten the nails to the required length using pliers.
4. Denim buttons on a broken leg with a hole:
Installed on an all-metal smooth aluminum denim stud or on a metal tubular one. Install on a flat wooden or metal surface. We pierce the fabric (leather) at the installation site and insert a denim nail. If it is long, bite off the excess. And to make the top unravel more beautifully, you can grind it off with a file. Next is the process of installing the button.
We use a cylindrical rod with a diameter of 4-5mm, or an ordinary bolt. The process of installing a denim button can be simplified if you use a denim nail with a circular notch. Hammer a nail like a button on a stable stem (see above). True, it will turn from concave to flat, if this does not bother you. To finally complete the installation of the button, we rivet the tip of the protruding denim nail. Since these steel nails are more difficult to rivet, the main thing is that they do not get scratched later. They riveted a little and that was enough. It is difficult to install these denim buttons on the metal tubular denim studs. They are made of steel and require considerable force to rivet them. If the alignment is not observed, the button and the stud itself can be deformed. Conclusion: The easiest way to install this type of denim buttons is on a smooth aluminum stud.
5. Double Stud Buttons:
A distinctive feature is the solid bottom of the button stem. Which is then pierced with a double denim stud. The carnation tendrils are then bent towards each other. The main disadvantage of this type of button is that one of the fastening studs often breaks off. Installing by hand is easy: Use an awl to punch two holes on the back of the button. We pierce the fabric with a nail, put a button on it and bend the ends of the nails with a narrow screwdriver into the inside of the button.
Removing the remnants of a denim button:
A typical case. A button on a pair of jeans broke on a broken leg. The property of this type of button is to jump off the shaft under increased load. Removing button remnants. Remove with a side cutter or pliers in one movement.
Attention: high-quality installation of fittings can only be done in an atelier or workshop using appropriate professional equipment.
