How to easily clean white sneakers
Let's start with the fact that light-colored shoes need to be washed often. The older the dirt, the more difficult it will be to deal with it, and the greater the chance that even high-quality washing will not be effective enough. The second point is the means and technology used. Aggressive bleaches lead to yellowness, as does improper drying after washing.
It won’t take much time to clean white sneakers, the main thing is to follow the basic rules:
- First you need to clean the sole. If you soak your shoes right away, the upper part will only become dirtier.
- Use toothpaste with detergent; it has a whitening effect.
- It is important not only to wash off the dirt, but also to soak the shoes for a few minutes to remove all remnants of the products used.
- It is necessary to dry your shoes thoroughly. To do this, wrap the sneakers in white napkins and fill them from the inside to maintain their shape. When they dry, there will be white streaks on the paper, but the shoes will remain snow-white.
Useful care tips
- For sheepskin slippers, it is not necessary to buy special water-repellent products; cosmetics for leather and suede are suitable for them.
- For summer and winter it is better to have different types of indoor shoes. In hot weather, open models are perfect, and in winter, cozy “felt boots” will provide warmth.
- You need to clean and dry your slippers at least once a week. Products made from synthetic materials should be washed in soapy water at the same intervals.
- It is preferable to choose closed models from natural materials. They allow the skin to breathe, which will prevent the appearance of unpleasant odor and fungal diseases.
- It is recommended to choose house shoes with hard soles, ideally with orthopedic insoles.
- Each family member should have their own pair of slippers, and it wouldn’t hurt to have a pair for guests.
The softness and comfort of house shoes sets the mood for the entire day for its owner. Keeping it clean is necessary not only from a hygiene point of view, but also from an aesthetic point of view. It’s so nice, after a working day in heels or classic boots, to find yourself in cozy, and most importantly clean, house slippers.
Preparatory stage. Cleaning the sole
Take out the laces and soak them with washing powder. You can add any bleach to the water. If you leave the accessory where it goes into the armholes, the fabric will not wash out.
Now let's move on to the sole. The easiest way to wash it from street dirt is under running water, helping yourself with a stiff brush, but in the end the entire bathtub, including towels and toothbrushes, will be splashed with dirt. Therefore, do not be lazy to pick up a bucket, take it to the corridor and place it on a large rag or a layer of newspapers. Clean the soles by lowering the sneakers over the edge of the bucket, but without touching the water.
After washing off the main dirt, you need to bring the sole to whiteness. There are several methods for this:
- Soaking in a solution of washing powder . It is better to choose a product with whitening granules. You will need a wide basin, a liter of water and 3-4 tablespoons of powder. Place the shoes in the basin, the solution should cover the sole. After 1-2 hours, scrub the sole well with an old toothbrush or a hard sponge.
- Baking soda based paste . Apply it to the sole and rub well. For the composition to take effect, you will need to wait about 30 minutes, then rub and rinse with water.
- Acetic acid . You will need a solution of 9% vinegar, diluted with water in a ratio of 1:3. Apply to the surface with a soft cloth and leave until dry.
- Toothpaste . She doesn't just brush her teeth. To whiten the soles of sneakers, just squeeze a little paste onto an old toothbrush and rub vigorously. Leave for 10 minutes, after which you can repeat the procedure.
- Vaseline . It helps finish cleaning, whiten stains, and even cover up minor scratches on the soles. To do this, apply Vaseline and gently rub it into the surface.
It is advisable to wipe the soles every time you return home. Then the dirt will not have time to eat into the material, and you will not need to make significant efforts to get your shoes in order.
Brighteners and stain removers
You probably have a modern oxygen bleach or stain remover. You can also clean the surface with it. Just make the solution more concentrated than recommended in the instructions. Add 2 times more bleach to warm water and dissolve thoroughly. Dip the shoes in the solution until it completely covers the rubber part.
If the bleach is liquid, simply apply it to the dirty part of the sneakers without dissolving it in water. Let them stand in this state for several hours. Then the remaining dirt (if any) can be washed off with a foam sponge. After the water procedures, all that remains is to wipe the already white sole of your favorite sneakers with a damp cloth.
Option 1. Wash by hand
The preparation allowed us to return the sole to its previous appearance, now we move on. If the laces have not yet been removed at this stage, you should do so. We also remove the insoles. They are soaked with the addition of a tablespoon of white vinegar or citric acid. This neutralizes the fungus and removes the unpleasant odor.
Soak
To make the procedure more effective, pour slightly warm water into a basin and completely immerse the sneakers in it. After 30 minutes you can already wash it . Mix the chosen product with a small amount of water.
Wash
Instructions:
- Using a sponge or toothbrush, cover the entire surface with the cleaning solution. Required inside and outside.
- Leave for 30 minutes.
- Rinse well. This is the most important point, because otherwise you cannot do without yellow stains.
Please note that for fabric sneakers the water should be cool or lukewarm. High temperatures will cause shoes to quickly lose their original appearance.
Important information
In order for the process of getting rid of yellow spots to be successful, you must adhere to the following recommendations:
You should not rub your sneakers too vigorously, trying to remove yellowness from them. The fabric may not withstand intense exposure and may tear.- White shoes should be washed separately from other items so that their surface does not become stained.
- If you use powder for washing, you must use the “extra rinse” function.
- In an attempt to quickly dry shoes, you should not place a white pair on a heating radiator. Contact with a heating device will cause yellow discoloration, even after bleaching. For the same reason, the couple is not dried with a hairdryer.
While clothes can be bleached by washing them in hot water, sneakers will not withstand such treatment. Boiling water will cause the sole to crack.
Option 2. Use a washing machine
This is not the best option for shoes; without reservation, it is suitable only for strong, high-quality sneakers made of fabric. Usually in modern cars, in “sport”, “wool”, “delicate” modes, sneakers do not lose either shape or color, but decorative elements may fade, tear off or peel off.
Procedure (laces and insoles have already been removed):
- Make sure that there are no small stones or sand left inside your shoes.
- Place a pair in a laundry bag or old pillowcase and tie it to prevent the shoes from falling out while twisting.
- Additionally, place a towel in the drum - this measure will protect the sole of your sneakers from cracks and the car from unnecessary shocks.
- Use liquid detergent - it is easier to rinse and does not cause allergies or irritation to your feet.
- Select a temperature no higher than 40 degrees and minimum spin speed, or wash without it.
- Start the cycle.
- Press clean sneakers against the wall, pressing down with a dry terry towel to remove more moisture. Naturally, sneakers should not be twisted or sent wet to a heated towel rail or other heat sources.
- Dry your sneakers completely on a rack in the fresh air, with special shoe dryers, or at a distance of 20-30 cm from a fan.
Tip: Fix the shape of the sneakers by stuffing them with clean paper towels and change the “filler” every hour - this way the shoes will dry faster and will definitely not become deformed. Socks filled with warm salt are even more effective.
Cleaning without washing
If you carry out this procedure regularly, your shoes will have to be tested less often:
- Dry. To do this, you will need to remove the laces and insoles, and clean the sole with a stiff brush. After that, arm yourself with a toothbrush and tooth powder. Dip the bristles in water, then in the powder and go over the entire surface of the shoe, inside and out. It is better to clean rag sneakers with a soft sponge. After 40 minutes, remove any remaining product with a dry cloth.
- Wet. It is simply necessary for regular care of leather sneakers. After the preliminary procedures, soak the swab in a soapy solution and wipe the entire surface, then let it dry.
Fighting difficult stains
If your efforts do not bring the desired result, you can try one of the following options:
- Gasoline helps a lot against stains - soak a sponge in it and apply it to the stain, and after 5-10 minutes remove it;
- a mixture of vinegar, citric acid and powder is also effective - apply it to the stain and leave for 5 minutes;
- Ammonia will whiten white sneakers - treat the stains until they go away.
- Vaseline helps to clean the tops of shoes, as well as the soles - apply it to the stain, rubbing it into the fabric.
Advice It is not advisable to use chlorine bleaches. A couple of such treatments and the fabric will turn gray or yellowish.
Cleaning stains
Even the most careful owners can get stains on their slippers. Most of them can be removed by washing, either by hand or by machine. But there are products for which frequent contact with water is not recommended. Also, not all stains can be easily washed off without special products.
- Chuni made of sheep wool or felt boots can be cleaned of stains using a special brush for suede. On one side it has hard metal bristles, on the other there are silicone bristles. With this device you can get rid of dirt by dry cleaning.
- Grease stains can be removed using semolina or chalk. To do this, use a brush to remove dust and dirt. Next, rub the stains with semolina or crushed chalk. Overnight, the fat will be absorbed into the product and can be brushed out.
- Coffee stains can be removed by soaking the product in cool salt water for a couple of hours. This method is not suitable for felt or sheepskin.
- You can remove stains from berries and jam with lemon juice or vinegar. If the slippers are bright, you should test the product on an inconspicuous area.
- A mixture of starch and gasoline will remove strong yellow or gray stains. The ingredients are mixed to form a thick paste and applied to the stain. After drying, the remaining starch is removed with a brush or vacuum cleaner.
- Shredded potato peelings will help remove dirt and stains from the leather side of the sheepskin. Preliminarily thoroughly washed cleaning products are ground into porridge and applied to the surface of the product. If heavily soiled, you can remove it with a brush. Next, the mass is removed, excess moisture is removed with paper napkins.

What to do if yellow spots appear after washing
If your socks turn yellow after washing, it is most likely because the remaining detergent has flowed down to the front and has soaked the fibers of the fabric. The first option is to simply rinse the sneakers again in clean water and dry them with paper. If you couldn’t remove the yellowness, try one of the following options:
- Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide . Make a paste and apply it to the stains. After 15 minutes, wipe with a damp cloth.
- Baking soda and liquid soap. Add a little water to make a paste and rub it in with a toothbrush.
- Vinegar and washing powder. The maximum concentration of vinegar is 6%, mix it with the powder and apply to the stains. Clean after 10 minutes.
Washing white sneakers is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. The main thing is not to tighten them and wipe them every time you come home. Then the shoes will remain snow-white for a long time and will look like new.
Determine the causes of pollution
- Weather. Puddles, slush and dirt will ruin your shoes. It's best not to wear Converse in this weather.
- Untimely care. Don't leave dirty sneakers on for too long. Wash off the dirt immediately, otherwise it may become embedded.
- Poor cleansing. Before washing in the washing machine, you need to remove dirt from the sole. Excess dirt can cause sneakers to turn gray or yellow.
Do not machine wash laced sneakers. Dirt may remain on the laces. It is better to wash them separately by hand along with the insoles.
