Cleaning a fur hood

A down jacket with fur trim looks luxurious! Therefore, any contamination immediately catches the eye, and the product looks sloppy.

Cleaning fur is not easy.

  1. Wash the fur collar separately from the item.
  2. For fur, the optimal water temperature is considered to be no higher than 30 degrees. Do not use hot water for washing, especially if the item is black or white.
  3. Before washing, soak the fur in soapy water. To do this, use laundry soap or detergent for fur products.
  4. Do not rub or twist the fur while cleaning. Work mainly on problem, contaminated areas.
  5. Remove greasy stains with a mixture of a teaspoon of ammonia, two teaspoons of salt and a glass of water. Apply the prepared product only to selected areas, and after half an hour wash in soapy water.
  6. Comb the fur with a wide-toothed comb in the direction of hair growth.
  7. Among the folk remedies, talc, starch or semolina are excellent for cleaning fur. Apply one of your chosen products to problem spots and then shake well. If there are white grains of sand stuck in the fibers, remove them with a vacuum cleaner.

How to dry and fluff a down jacket

You can dry things with down filling in a special drying machine or by hand. Do this quickly so that the fluff does not develop an unpleasant odor.

Dry the product flat on a drying rack or the back of a chair. Avoid exposure to sunlight, do not use iron or heating devices. Shake thoroughly and beat the item so that the fluff dries and is distributed evenly.

Follow the rules of care - and your down jacket will keep you warm and happy for many years.

How to wash a down jacket

If worn infrequently, wash when soiled. If worn regularly, wash the item once or twice a season. Be sure to put your clothes in order before storing them for a long time.

Information about whether the down jacket can be washed and in what way is contained on the label. Basic rules for washing at home:

  • Pre-treat contaminated areas with soapy water and clean with a brush or sponge. The product should not be soaked;
  • remove the fur, fasten the snaps, buttons and zippers, turn inside out;
  • wash by hand or in a washing machine on a delicate cycle at 30º and 600-800 rpm with an additional rinse;
  • use liquid products without bleaches and conditioners or special preparations for washing down. When using powder, rinse the item two to three times;
  • Along with the jacket, place several tennis balls or special balls into the drum of the machine - this will help the product remain fluffy.

Clothing made of leather, fur, or with a water-repellent coating requires special cleaning. If washing is contraindicated, use dry cleaning services.

Special cleaning products

It is not recommended to use classic washing powder to clean a down jacket. It is difficult to rinse its components with water, since a down jacket is a product consisting of many layers and insulation. As a result, whitish streaks, stains or new stains may remain on the front side of the item. The chemical components of cleaning mixtures have a negative effect on the condition of the fluff. The insulation can stick together and form clumps that will be difficult to break and fluff.

Special down jacket cleaning products remove stains, clean the material, and leave the down fluffy and soft. For example, a special liquid NIKWAX Down Wash Direct makes down filling more resistant to moisture. And Toko Eco Down Wash loosens the insulation and prevents it from forming clumps after cleaning.

Cleaning a greasy area

Greasy places give the down jacket a sloppy, worn-out look. Pockets, hood, fastener bar, belt tend to become shiny already in the middle of the wearing season. You can update such zones using available tools.

Overly contaminated areas should be given more attention.

How to remove greasy places on a jacket, especially if there are no chemicals specifically designed for this at home? There are a lot of folk remedies.

Ammonia

Ammonia can remove greasy stains. It is better to carry out cleaning in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling toxic fumes. The product can be used alone or in combination with ammonia.

Use ammonia carefully.

Do not pour ammonia directly onto the down jacket material. Dampen the foam sponge and walk over the stained area. After 10 minutes, rinse the area with warm water.

Petrol

Gasoline has always been an excellent stain remover for greasy and greasy stains. Check first on an inconspicuous area of the material to see how it reacts to the product and whether it can be used in this case.

Gasoline will help remove things that are too dirty.

To remove grease using gasoline, apply a thin layer of it to a sponge moistened with water. Then rub the stain and wait about 10 minutes. After time has passed, wipe the down jacket area with a damp cloth with a pleasant smell.

If your down jacket cannot be machine washed or you are afraid to do so, wash it by hand.

Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is great for removing greasy and greasy stains. With its help you can clean not only a down jacket, but also a fur collar, cuffs and pockets. Pour a little liquid onto a sponge or cotton pad and then apply it to the problem area of the product.

Hydrogen peroxide is a good stain remover.

Soak the ammonia for 10 minutes, and then rinse the item well in warm water. To remove the persistent ammonia aroma, hang the product on the balcony to air.

Use special devices for washing a down jacket in the washing machine.

Salt

Salt doesn't remove stains so much as it absorbs grease. Therefore, some recommend warming up the greasy area a little with a hairdryer and then sprinkling it with salt. Leave for 10-50 minutes and then remove any remaining salt with a soft brush.

Salt will help clean the down jacket.

Salt can be mixed with citric acid or fresh juice. Dilute the mixture with water to a thick paste and apply to the stain. After a couple of minutes, scrub the dirt with a brush and remove the remaining mixture with water.

Any chemical impact on the material significantly shortens its service life.

Vinegar

Vinegar does an excellent job of removing grease and greasy stains. It can be used alone or paired with table salt. Dilute a tablespoon of vinegar in half a glass of water. You can add a tablespoon of salt.

Vinegar will deal with greasy stains.

Treat all problem areas and then clean off any remaining residue. If desired, you can rinse the area with cool water for shine.

Dishwashing liquid

Liquid dishwashing detergent has long won primacy among universal stain removers and grease fighters. Apply and foam the liquid onto the surface of the sponge, and then rub all greasy areas.

Detergent is suitable for cleaning a down jacket.

Once cleaning is complete, remove any remaining product with warm water.
