Ironing a jacket: step-by-step instructions for working with leather products and leatherette clothing

Clothing made from genuine leather is always in trend. Styles and models change, but this material does not lose its position.

If leather items are not stored properly between seasons, they may become wrinkled. Wrinkled skin looks untidy and requires smoothing.

You can do it at home using available means. Read the article about how and what to use to smooth leather items.

How and with what you can smooth natural leather on a leather jacket, bag, boots: methods

Products made from genuine leather have a presentable appearance, are of good quality and high wear resistance. However, sometimes creases, folds or dents form on leather products. Most often, such defects can be discovered after long-term storage of the item in a closet, rolled up.

Important: To ensure that genuine leather products do not wrinkle or break, they must be properly stored and properly cared for.

If you nevertheless find that wrinkles and folds have formed on your favorite leather jacket, bag or boots, you can smooth them out at home. There are several ways to smooth natural leather, the success of which depends on various factors, for example:

  1. How long was the product stored folded?
  2. From the quality of the leather.
  3. How quickly should the product be ironed?
  4. From proper care of the product.

Now we list ways that will help return the product to its previous appearance:

  • Hanging the product;
  • Steaming the product;
  • Ironing the product using an iron;
  • Using a special press.

The easiest way, accessible to everyone, is hanging the product on the back of a chair or on hangers. But in the case when you need to smooth the item quickly, this method is unlikely to help. It will take 1-2 days to smooth out thin skin, and up to 7 days for thick skin.

In addition, you can purchase a skin moisturizer, which is applied to the problem area in a small amount. After which the moisturizer is not washed off for 2-3 days. This special product is a real helper when you need to smooth out a leather product without difficulty or much effort.

Prohibited methods

There are a number of methods that cannot be used due to damage to your favorite leather item.

  1. Do not use a hair dryer. The hair dryer releases a stream of dry hot air, which will make the product rough and will not get rid of wrinkles.
  2. Do not use hot water. Hot water deforms the material and washes out the color.
  3. Stretching folds. When using physical force, the jacket will become deformed and will not get rid of the wrinkle problem.

How to iron a genuine leather jacket with steam?

Steam smoothes leather items well and, most importantly, helps to do it quickly. If you have a steamer in your home, you can easily iron out a wrinkled leather jacket.

Important: The steamer must be kept at a distance of at least 30 cm from the jacket. Moisture entering the skin can lead to deformation of the material. After steaming, the jacket needs to be dried for 2 days, sometimes it takes longer, depending on your skin type.

Instead of a steamer, you can use a regular iron with a steam generator function. Using an iron is convenient for smoothing small elements: cuffs, collar, belt.

  • If the jacket is completely wrinkled, it is best to hang it in the bathroom and let hot steam in there.
  • At the same time, try to prevent water from getting on the jacket, as in previous steaming methods.
  • On average, after 10 minutes, the wrinkles on the jacket will be smoothed out under the influence of steam.
  • Hang your leather jacket in your room to dry.

Important: The disadvantage of this smoothing is the ability of a leather product to “shrink” after exposure to moisture.

Steam iron

Smooth with an iron

Wrinkles may appear after improper washing, careless wearing of leather goods or improper storage.

You can use an iron to effectively smooth the leather on your jacket. The main thing is not to exceed the recommended temperature indicated by the product manufacturer on the label.

Algorithm of actions:

  • Lay the item out on a clean, flat ironing surface, making sure the leather parts are not touching each other.
  • The iron heating switch is set to the “Silk” position (2 points), turn off the steam function.
  • For ironing, use a dense, plain material without a clear texture.
  • To return the product to its original volume, you need to put it on a mannequin or put it in a pillow, roll up a large towel.
  • In an hour, the jacket can be hung on hangers in the closet.

Important: After ironing an area to allow it to cool completely, without touching or moving the fabric, move on to another area. Heated skin is easily deformed, stretched, and sloppy “bubbles” appear.

Products with a thick lining on the front side through thick fabric. Fold the iron into a fold, hold it for 2-3 seconds, and evaluate the result.

How to iron a genuine leather jacket with an iron?

Another option for smoothing out a wrinkled genuine leather jacket is using an iron. You should know that not all types of leather can be ironed, namely:

  • Jackets made of pressed and also very thin leather;
  • Jackets with embossed designs.

When ironing a leather jacket with an iron, follow certain rules so as not to spoil your favorite item:

  1. You can iron the jacket both from the inside and the outside, but always through thick cotton fabric or wrapping paper.
  2. It is unacceptable to use gauze or thin fabric as a gasket.
  3. Remember that touching the metal part of the iron to natural leather can permanently damage the item.
  4. Do not move the iron over the jacket, but simply apply it to the desired place for a few seconds.
  5. After removing the iron, lightly pull the product with your hands.
  6. The iron temperature should be at a minimum, be sure to turn off the steam mode.

Important: After ironing your leather jacket, do not put it on immediately. Leave it hanging on a hanger until it cools completely. Otherwise, the jacket may stretch in the places where the iron touched.

Prevention of wrinkles

Most often, leather clothing wrinkles when stored improperly. To avoid this, you must follow a few simple rules:

  • The product should be stored on a trempel with wide hangers that fit the size. This will help avoid deformation of the shoulder line and the appearance of creases.
  • Under no circumstances should leather products be stored folded. During storage, stable creases of the material form in place of the folds.
  • When preparing the product for storage, you should fasten all zippers, buttons and other fasteners, and empty the pockets of any objects. Thanks to this, they will not stretch out and spoil the appearance of the product.
  • If the jacket has a belt, it should be stored separately, but also not folded. It is best to hang the trempel on the partition. But you can also roll it into a loose ball. Never leave it in your pocket.
  • To prevent leather items from becoming dusty during storage, use special covers. Give preference to natural materials that allow air to pass through well. This will ensure good air circulation and preserve the quality of the leather material. But covers made of synthetics and polyethylene, on the contrary, are extremely undesirable. In them, the skin oxidizes and gradually changes color.
  • The storage closet should not be filled with things. The leather jacket should be placed freely in the closet so that there is no pressure on the product from other things.
  • The storage cabinet must also meet other requirements, for example, be dry and located away from heating devices. Optimal conditions for storing leather products: air temperature - 20°C, humidity - 40–60%.

How to iron a genuine leather jacket with a press?

Smoothing a leather jacket with a special press is an effective and harmless method. Unfortunately, it is not available to everyone, especially at home.

First of all, because the press is bulky and storing it at home is not always convenient for the sake of one jacket or several other similar things.

It makes sense to contact specialists in the manufacture and sale of leather products; they will definitely have this press. Thus, for a small amount of money, you will quickly and effectively smooth out your favorite item.

Steaming

The steam supply is gentle on clothes made of all types of leather. This method is suitable even for suede or velor products. The main thing is to leave the clothes untouched until they are completely dry, as no handprints will be visible and they should be dried thoroughly without turning on the heaters.

Steam generator or iron

A leather jacket can be steamed using a steam generator or ironed by turning on the steam function.

Algorithm of actions:

  • Place clothes on hangers.
  • We consistently process the surface, holding the device at a distance of 15-20 cm from the product.
  • Leave for 2-3 hours to cool and dry.

To do this, check the quality and purity of the water vapor or burn the leather from the underside to avoid scale formation.

Important: Normal thick skin should be scalded from the front side. Lacquered, eco-leather, laser-treated products can only be scalded from the reverse side.

Steam room in the bathroom

Sweating in the bathroom will help smooth out the skin and get rid of fine wrinkles:

  • Fill a container with hot water. The temperature should be such that water vapor leaves the container. You can add boiling water from the kettle.
  • I hang my jacket on hangers over a basin of water.
  • After an hour, in a warm, dry room, carefully remove the condensation with a soft flannel.
  • Without removing it from the hangers, let it dry for 2-3 hours.

Important: hangers must be exactly the same clothing size, wide, without protrusion. The skin may become deformed.

How and with what you can smooth artificial leather on a leather jacket, bag, boots: methods

Important: Products made from artificial leather can be ironed in the same way as those made from natural leather. The advantage of smoothing leatherette is that this material is not afraid of water.

If you want to smooth leatherette boots , do the following:

  • Stuff papers into them, giving them the correct shape.
  • Wipe your shoes with a damp sponge.
  • Leave until completely dry and smooth.

To iron a jacket or bag , you can use the following method:

  • Turn the item inside out, then hang it on a hanger.
  • Use a spray bottle to moisten the product so that it is wet, pay attention that water should not flow from the product.
  • Leave the product in this form until completely dry.

Do not dry items made of natural or artificial leather on electric heaters; avoid drafts when drying such items.

A few more folk methods to help smooth leatherette:

  1. Soak a cotton pad in glycerin and apply to the product, leave the product hanging until completely absorbed.
  2. Mix 9% vinegar, laundry conditioner, and water in equal quantities. Using a spray bottle, spray the mixture onto the leatherette item. Then leave until completely dry.
  3. A walk outside in damp, foggy weather helps to smooth out a leatherette jacket. Humid air can remove dents just as well as steam in a bathroom.

Try these methods for smoothing faux leather to see which works best for your item.

How to smooth artificial leather?

Does it make a difference what to iron: leather or leatherette?

To iron a leather jacket at home without ruining it, first examine the label on the reverse side of the product. There you will find information about the composition of the material, as well as recommendations for washing and ironing.

The composition matters - a jacket made of genuine leather is easier to iron than one made of leatherette. The latter is less susceptible to the effects of various means and methods, so it is better not to crush such things.

  • To distinguish leather from leatherette at home, hold the product in your hand. The skin quickly heats up, while its counterpart remains cool.
  • The pattern on artificial material is more uniform, often has repeating segments, while the texture of real leather is completely chaotic;
  • Check the cut - leather fabric will have suede fibers there, leatherette will have threads;
  • Leatherette is heavier in weight and smells of chemicals. The skin is light, with an unobtrusive, non-perfume scent;
  • A leather jacket quickly absorbs moisture, and an artificial leather product is like oilcloth;
  • Bend the product. Real leather at the fold will change color, but there will be no crease. And the leatherette will not change color, but will retain the fold.

Below we will tell you how to iron a leather jacket at home, and in each method we will note whether it is suitable for leatherette.

How to iron a patent leather jacket?

You can smooth a patent leather jacket using this method:

  • Turn it inside out.
  • Spray with water.
  • Leave until completely dry.

If you need to smooth a patent leather bag, this method will do:

  • Place a damp towel in your bag so that it covers the entire space of the bag.
  • Hang the bag and leave it in this position overnight.

You can smooth patent leather using an iron. You need to iron very carefully and always from the inside through the fabric. If the product does not smooth out, you can gradually increase the temperature, but again, this must be done extremely carefully.

You can soften and smooth out creases on patent leather using Vaseline, glycerin or castor oil. To do this, use a soft cloth; under no circumstances should you rub patent leather with hard brushes.

A few important points

Each garment has its own unique features. To solve them, special techniques are often necessary, which we will describe here.

Creases on the collar. Despite the apparent complexity of the problem, the way out is quite simple. Use a regular iron and iron the jacket on both sides through the fabric. After ironing, it is recommended to rub in nut oil, Vaseline or glycerin several times. The creases won't bother you anymore.

Straightening skin with defects. It is necessary to use dry ironing methods, due to possible deformation by wet steam. Use a leather treatment product such as nut butter or iron through a cloth.

Folds on a winter leather jacket. The difficulty in straightening a winter jacket lies in its insulation. This jacket has fewer folds, but they are much larger than usual. If the seal can be removed, then use normal methods. If not, then ironing, steam and a humidifier are necessary. Hang the product until it cools down.

Don't neglect leather moisturizers. The special composition softens the skin and protects it from minor damage. They come in spray form, making them easy to apply. If such a remedy is not available, you can use nut oil, petroleum jelly, glycerin (dissolved in water). Apply one of the products to a cotton pad and wipe the jacket. This will soften and straighten the leather material of the product.

How to straighten natural and artificial leather: tips

Here are some tips that will help you maintain the original appearance of your leather product, as well as straighten out folds and creases:

  1. Store the products straightened out in the case. If it is a bag or jacket, then store it in a suspended state. Then you won't have to deal with creases and folds in the future.
  2. Store your boots stuffed with paper.
  3. Before any manipulation, look at the product label, if it is still available. Some faux leather items can be washed in a washing machine, while others, in turn, cannot even withstand steam.
  4. Peanut oil is used to smooth artificial and natural leather. Just apply the oil to the crease, wait until the skin absorbs the oil, remove the remaining oil with a napkin.
  5. To smooth a leather item, first use a gentle method, such as spontaneous smoothing on a hanger. If it doesn't help, try other methods.
  6. Do not allow natural leather to get too wet if you decide to straighten it with water or steam.
  7. It is better not to iron very thin and delicate skin.

If you show ingenuity and patience, you can return a leather product to its original appearance and extend its service life.

How to prevent creasing

It must be emphasized that if you eliminate the source of the formation of wrinkles, then in the future you will not ask the question “How to smooth out wrinkles on a leather jacket?”

Check out some tips to help you:

  • Store the jacket only on the trempel. Avoid a folded look on a shelf.
  • The jacket should hang freely and not be pressed down by other things - this contributes to the formation of folds.
  • Upon entering the room, if you need to take off your jacket, pay attention to the chairs, since the jacket only needs to be hung there, or on a hanger (if one is present). In such situations, some people store their jackets on hooks or put them on a chair, which is absolutely wrong.

How to remove creases

To effectively smooth out rough creases on a leather jacket, you can use Vaseline. First, the place of such a fold is treated with an emollient, in our case, Vaseline.

Clothes must first be cleaned of dirt to prevent stains that are difficult to remove. Lubricate a cotton swab with Vaseline and apply to the crease. After some time, the lubricant will penetrate the pores on the skin, thereby softening its structure and straightening the fold.

If you already had to iron your clothes, then do not rush, perform each action thoughtfully.

After several repetitions of the procedure, the crease will smooth out. The number of repeated treatments depends on the degree of dryness of the skin.

Skin moisturizers

Outerwear made of high-quality leather is not the cheapest, so it’s understandable to want to extend the life of such a jacket as long as possible. One of the main methods for caring for leather products is moisturizing.

Skin has a specific structure.

For this, it is better to use special cosmetics. You need to purchase such products based on not doing harm. High-quality moisturizers are made from natural raw materials. The composition of such cosmetics for clothing invariably includes natural ingredients:

  • fats of animal or vegetable origin;
  • beeswax;
  • natural resins;
  • Castor oil.

Be sure to pay attention that the composition does not contain silicone, which clogs the pores on the skin, and does not contain abrasive elements that scratch the surface. Before using the product, carefully read the instructions and follow the established recommendations. Typically, the moisturizer is evenly distributed over the surface of the jacket and remains until completely absorbed.

The most gentle methods of influence

When working with products made of very delicate material, it is first recommended to try softer and safer options:

  • We simply hang the product on hangers of a suitable shape and wait patiently for several days until it returns to its previous appearance.
  • In some cases, Vaseline, castor or nut oil helps. Apply the product directly to the creases and remove with a damp cloth after the material has softened and smoothed out. This approach also restores elasticity to the tissue, so it can be used as a preventative against skin thickening.

Special cases

After the back and front of the jacket have been ironed, the question arises of how to iron the collar, sleeves, and places with decorative elements.

Straightening the collar

What to do:

  • Prepare a thick jelly solution from water and potato starch,
  • wet the cotton pad,
  • put the mixture on the fold,
  • cover with a smooth cloth folded in several layers.
  • Iron with a warm iron until dry.

Starch will cope even with deep folds.

Smoothing out the sleeves

For ironing, use a special vertical stand made from an ironing board or a folded terry towel.

When processing sleeves, special attention should be paid to the bend of the elbow, on the one hand it causes deep folds, on the other - a “bubble”. To avoid aggravating the situation, carefully straighten the material, avoiding further stretching.

Smoothing out areas with metal decor and embroidery

To straighten such items, you can use any method except ironing and spraying with cold water.

Be very careful not to damage the jewelry. The rest of the jacket should not come into contact with them during processing, otherwise the print will be sloppy and the jacket will be damaged.

How to care for leather products

To increase the service life of leather outerwear, while maintaining its attractive appearance and quality, not simple care is needed, but a whole range of preventive measures. These include periodic maintenance procedures or one-time measures to correct specific problems.

There are special creams for the care of leather jackets.

When they talk about quality care for a leather wardrobe, they mean the following measures:

  • cleaning from dirt using special cosmetics for clothing or using a brush;
  • to neutralize the effects of external factors (sun, rain, snow, dirt), the leather is treated with impregnations with a water-repellent effect and polished;
  • Defects detected in a timely manner are eliminated or masked with special compounds and creams, which makes it possible to hide mechanical damage, integrity problems and abrasions.
  • restoring color and giving a fresh appearance is achieved by using coloring sprays and liquid leather.

Use professional products to moisturize leather items.
If you follow the recommendations outlined, ensure careful use, proper storage and careful care of your leather jacket, it will serve you for many seasons. It will amaze those around you with its stylish look and novelty.

Place under the press

This method will help smooth out deep wrinkles on clothes made of natural, synthetic, and ecological leather. Suitable for thin, unadorned clothing with thick lining.

What to do:

  • Apply the coating to a flat surface.
  • Place a stack of books, magazines, bottles or cans of water on top, carefully smoothing the lining and skin of your hands.
  • Make sure there are no new wrinkles under the press.
  • Leave for 12-15 hours.
  • We hang the coat on hangers, wait another 5-7 hours until the product “hangs”.

Important: you cannot iron suede, nubuck, velor, or leather with a laser using this method. The material may become deformed.
