Every housewife sometimes faces the challenge of urgently needing to remove a stain on clothing or restore a damaged item to its original appearance. Many people don’t even realize that you can easily make an effective stain remover with your own hands from home remedies that are always available in the kitchen.
We invite you to get acquainted with simple but effective recipes that can replace expensive household chemicals. It is important to remember that stain removers are divided into oxygen, acid, solvent and targeted agents. Which one to choose depends on the origin of the stain and the type of fabric.
Oxygen analogs include: hydrogen peroxide, borax, soda ash and baking soda; acidic substitutes include table vinegar, citric acid; ammonia, olive oil, and acetone will serve as solvents. Laundry soap, glycerin, salt, green tea, olive oil and aspirin are always in demand when cleaning things.
Varieties and methods of replacing them
The choice of stain remover depends on the composition of the stain. The principle of action is to destroy an organic or inorganic compound and remove it from the tissue.
Chlorine
Chlorine-containing compounds, for example, Whiteness, are used to bleach white cotton and linen items. At home, it can be replaced with a bleach solution. 30 grams per 1000 milliliters is enough.
Using a home stain remover has the same limitations and disadvantages as the professional method:
- premature wear of the fabric;
- yellowness on a white background;
- toxicity of odor and solution;
- use on fabrics with a dense, natural structure.
The use of chlorine compounds requires skin protection and ventilation.
Peroxide
Special stain removers contain oxygen, which oxidizes the organic components of the stain. At home, a substitute for store-bought stain remover would be hydrogen peroxide and soda ash. A pharmaceutical disinfectant will also replace chlorine-based bleach.
Perhydrol, when interacting with water, breaks down into oxygen and carbon dioxide. Soda ash softens the water, making the fabric easier to clean. For greater effect, the water temperature should be 70-80 degrees. For silk and wool, the temperature is reduced to 30-50 degrees. Homemade stain remover is not used for cleaning colored fabrics.
Chemicals require careful handling to avoid contact with mucous membranes and the gastrointestinal tract
Acid
Professional stain removers contain oxalic and hydrofluoric acids. They are used to remove iron oxides from cotton items. High toxicity and aggressiveness limits their use.
Table vinegar, artificial citric acid, and lemon juice have similar qualities in terms of interaction with inorganic substances.
Rules for removing stains
The main condition necessary to remove contaminants is to prevent the stain from spreading over a large area.
To do this, use the following home techniques:
- Create a protective cushion. The edges of the stain are moistened with water and a hygroscopic substance (talc, starch) is added.
- Stripping is done from the edges to the center.
- The tool must match the size of the spot (not exceed it).
Treat the fabric from the wrong side, placing white paper napkins or several layers of gauze on the other side. Before removing with homemade acid-containing compounds, you should check the stability of the dye layer of the fabric in an inconspicuous area. The item must be thoroughly shaken off dust before processing.
Universal means
To remove stains from colored fabric so that after home dry cleaning there are no faded areas left on it, you can use a product that contains:
- green tea;
- laundry soap (preferably brown);
- soda ash;
- water.
Soda ash (sodium carbonate) is different from baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
The first is chemically more active, so it is necessary to work with it, taking precautions, since soda ash, when it gets on the skin and mucous membranes, can cause at least irritation

- water;
- baking soda;
- hydrogen peroxide (3%).
Add soda to hot water. Then peroxide is poured into the solution. It is recommended to spray the resulting product over the contaminated area. Within 8-10 minutes after treatment with the stain remover, white items can be put into the washing machine, however, to effectively remove long-established stains, the reaction time of the product with the stain must be increased to several hours.
You can remove traces of chocolate or cocoa, rust or fat left on clothes with a composition made from:
- liquid dishwashing detergent;
- ammonia;
- baking soda;
- water.
To make it, you need to mix 2/3 cups of detergent and ammonia, 6 tbsp. in a container with 400 ml of warm water. l. soda The prepared mixture is poured into a bottle with a spray bottle. Before spraying, the contents of the bottle must be shaken, as the components of the cleaning composition separate over time. The stain remover has the properties of bleach, so it is best used for cleaning white items.
The following effective remedy includes:
- hydrogen peroxide (3%);
- lemon juice;
- water.
They can remove rusty, greasy stains, traces of grass from clothes, as well as clean furniture, plumbing fixtures and tiles from various types of dirt.

The mixture can restore the snow-whiteness of old fabric: it, treated with the product, just needs to be placed for a while in a place well lit by sunlight.
Methods for removing stains from colored and white items
Having stained clothes made from colored fabric, many are afraid to use a stain remover because it can ruin the item. To prevent this from happening, try making your own stain remover for colored items using:
- a piece of laundry soap weighing 50 grams;
- 100-150 grams of green tea decoction;
- 100 grams of soda ash;
- liter of water.
Rub the soap on a grater. Bring the water to a boil. Then add the resulting shavings to it. Boil the resulting mixture, stirring it constantly, until the soap is completely dissolved. Then pour the soda in there and pour in the green tea decoction. Let the mixture cool. Pour it directly into the washing machine drum. About 100 grams of the resulting solution will be enough. Start the wash.
To remove stains from white items you will need:
- half a glass of hydrogen peroxide;
- half a glass of soda (baking soda);
- one glass of hot water.
Dissolve baking soda in a glass of hot water. Add peroxide. Pour the mixture into a prepared container with a spray bottle. Apply the mixture to a fresh stain for 10 minutes. If the item has been stained for a long time, then leave it after treatment for 7-8 hours and only then wash it.
First actions
Once the stain has been placed, blot it with a damp cloth or napkin. Be careful not to rub dirt deeper into the fibers.
Treat a fresh stain with dishwashing detergent
What else can you do:
- pour sparkling water onto the dirt;
- Apply dish gel to the greasy mark;
- Place the dirty area under running cold water.
Heated glycerin will soak dried mud. Soak a rag and apply to the contaminated area.
Effective recipes for working with colored and white things with your own hands
To achieve the result, multi-component stain removers are used. Thanks to the selected elements, the effect is enhanced and the effect on the fibers is softened.
First
The cleaning solution is prepared from dishwashing detergent and 3% hydrogen peroxide. Ratio: 1:2. Stain remover properties: oxygen, with a degreasing effect and water softening effect.
Second
To obtain a mixture of 3% hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dishwashing detergent, take the following proportions: 8:1:4. Soda is used as a catalyst that enhances the oxidative effect. It is safe for the skin and removes organic odors.
Third
Homemade stain remover made from coarse table salt and detergent. Salt has high hygroscopicity and abrasive properties. Mixed with a degreaser, it removes all types of stains well: from wine to rust. If there is an excess of salt, salt stains remain on colored clothes.
The concentration and amount of stain remover must correspond to the size of the stain. After cleaning, items are thoroughly rinsed in warm and cool water.
Fourth
Table vinegar (9%) (citric acid/fresh lemon juice) is mixed with table salt, baking soda and the stain is wiped off. Ratio: 1 tablespoon acid, 1 teaspoon soda, ½ teaspoon salt. As a result of the chemical reaction, oxygen is released. The effect of a homemade stain remover is short-lived: while acetic acid and NaHCO3 react. The item is washed and rinsed well so that the smell of vinegar disappears.
Fifth
A solution of laundry soap with borax and ammonia will replace a special stain remover for colored and children's products. To obtain a liquid soap base, laundry soap is grated and boiled until the shavings disappear. For 0.5 liters of boiling water – 1 piece of soap. The resulting emulsion is cooled to 40 degrees. The entire volume is not used. The shelf life of the emulsion is 7 days.
Review of folk remedies
If you don’t have money for expensive shoe care creams, you can use the products available in every household.
Milk
Sneakers that have been cleaned of dirt can be washed with ordinary milk. If you mix it with chicken protein whipped into foam, you get an emulsion with protective and water-repellent properties.
Toothpaste
Ordinary toothpaste without dyes will help give whiteness to a white leather product. Squeeze a little product out of the tube onto an old toothbrush and rub it into the product. Then wipe with a dry soft cloth.
Petrolatum
Used to clean shoes from dirt and for protection. The leather surface is rubbed with Vaseline, and the remaining product is removed with a rag.
Vegetable oil
To clean white shoes, use only light, refined sunflower or olive oil. It is rubbed into the leather surface with gentle movements, and then the product is polished to a shine.
Lemon acid
Citric acid diluted with water or squeezed lemon juice is an ideal remedy for whitening skin and removing stains from textiles. You can mix the juice with tooth powder and apply this mixture to a heavily soiled area for several hours. Then rinse with warm water.
Soap and alcohol
White soap will help wash textiles or laces. Using alcohol, you can clean stains that are ingrained into fabric or suede. In addition to alcohol, you can use vodka.
Bleach and dish soap
Chlorine-free bleach can be used to remove old stains or bleach heavily soiled areas. It is not recommended to use this product on leather. But you can clean any shoes with dishwashing liquid.
How to make your own stain remover
DIY stain removers can vary in composition. They can be prepared without the use of harmful toxic components, which often cause allergies. In addition, the same ingredients in different combinations create a large number of varieties of stain removers.
Homemade stain removing spray
This spray will remove beet stains, carrot and apple juice stains, as well as ketchup and chocolate stains from white clothes. It is also suitable for white textile furniture upholstery and light-colored carpeting.
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup glycerin;
- 1/4 cup water (if you are going to store the product for some time, use distilled water);
- 1/4 cup liquid soap;
- 1 bottle of hydrogen peroxide 3% (100 ml)
- 40 drops of lemon essential oil (for long-term storage), if you plan to use the spray for 1-2 days, you can use the juice of 1 lemon.
Cooking method
- Prepare a dark-colored bottle; if such a bottle is not found, then put a dark bag on the transparent bottle. A dark bottle will help preserve the properties of hydrogen peroxide.
- Combine all ingredients and shake the bottle well.
- Spray or pour some spray onto the dirt and wait 5 minutes.
- Brush the spray-soaked stain with a soft-bristle brush.
- Rinse the treated area under running water or simply wash it.
This spray works equally well on any surface. Suitable for children's clothes and is hypoallergenic. It can be prepared for one or several uses, provided that distilled water and lemon essential oil are used. Distilled water and essential oil do not contain impurities and microorganisms, which will avoid the rapid proliferation of bacteria.
Due to the fact that the activity of peroxide decreases over time, it is not recommended to store the spray for more than two months.
Stain remover for colored fabrics
You will need:
- a piece of laundry soap weighing 50 grams;
- 100 grams of soda ash;
- liter of water.
Cooking steps:
- Grate the laundry soap.
- Boil a liter of water.
- Pour crushed soap into boiling water.
- Stir the mixture until the soap is completely dissolved, and then add soda to it.
- Cool.
- To remove stains from colored laundry, pour 100 g of the mixture into the drum of the machine.
The product is absolutely safe for children's underwear; mothers will appreciate it. It will carefully remove stains from things while maintaining color saturation. You should not prepare this remedy for future use, since it will not be possible to preserve it for a long period.
Vinegar and baking soda stain remover
Vinegar is one of the best natural stain removers. It can be used for both white and colored clothes, as well as for cleaning carpets and furniture upholstery.
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup 9% vinegar;
- 1/4 cup baking soda;
- 1/4 cup warm water.
Mode of application:
- Mix half a cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of warm water and 1/4 cup of baking soda.
- Apply the mixture to the stain and leave for 15 minutes.
Baking soda, under the influence of vinegar, reacts, which is accompanied by the release of oxygen. Oxygen breaks down stain particles, after which they can be easily removed with ordinary water.
Using vinegar, you can also remove mold stains; to do this, mix vinegar and salt in equal proportions and add boiling water.
Such stain removers should be used immediately after preparation, since stain removal occurs directly when soda (salt) reacts with vinegar.
Ammonia and borax
To remove dark spots of unknown origin, a mixture of ammonia and borax is suitable.
You will need:
- distilled water - 10 ml;
- ethyl alcohol - 8 ml;
- 10% ammonia - 8 ml;
- white soap shavings - 4 g;
- borax - 2 g.
Mode of application:
- In a small container, mix all ingredients except soap and water.
- Dissolve the soap with distilled water in a water bath.
- Combine the ingredients.
- Place the stained clothing on the ironing board and place a piece of light-colored fabric under the stain.
- Apply the product to the stain with a soft brush and scrub lightly.
- Pat the treated area dry with a paper towel, then rinse with clean cold water.
Since borax has a bleaching effect, you should not use this product on colored items. The ingredients in the stain remover allow it to be stored for about two months in a tightly closed container in a cool, dark place.
Selection of stain remover
Each stain has its own composition, to remove which you need to find the best home stain remover.
Yellow spots
The reason for the appearance of yellow spots on clothes may be:
- sweat;
- oil (animal or vegetable).
In each case, you need your own stain remover to remove them:
- Sweat is 99% water and 1% organic components, which include lipids, urea, ammonia, and sulfuric acid. They are absorbed into the fibers and change their color. The neutralization/bleaching reaction is carried out using vinegar and soda. Minor stains can be removed by rinsing in an automatic machine by adding 100 milliliters of vinegar. Stubborn stains are treated before washing by rubbing the mixture into traces of sweat. Yellow stains from sweat are removed from silk products with ethyl alcohol. Without vinegar or alcohol, a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and dish soap will help remove yellow underarms.
- Oily traces are removed using glycerin or dishwashing detergent, as well as talc or starch to create a buffer zone. Another method is to apply a 2:2:2 mixture of baking soda, ammonia and dish degreaser. Homemade stain removers are applied to the stain and washed off after 20-30 minutes.
From fruit juices
While the stain is still wet, cover it with table salt, let it dry and shake it off. If traces are preserved, then moisten the contamination with a mixture of table vinegar and citric acid (1:1).
From ink
Glycerin is poured onto the stain and left for 1 hour. Then rinse in warm salted water and wash in an emulsion made from laundry soap. Lines drawn with a ballpoint pen are removed with nail polish remover.
Tea and coffee
A mixture of ammonia and dish soap (ratio 3:1) is suitable. The stain is soaked for 10 minutes in the solution, then rinsed and washed with powder. Fresh tea stains will disappear if they are treated with a slurry of heated glycerin and salt. For black coffee, ammonia is added to the salt. Traces of coffee with milk are dissolved with gasoline from a lighter.
Deodorant
Antiperspirants can leave marks on clothing. On light-colored items, they are removed with an aqueous soda solution (1:1). On dark ones - salt and ammonia. The homemade composition is applied to the stains, left for 15 minutes and washed.
Rust
Fresh rusty stripes and stains are removed using lemon juice and a hot iron. The dirt is moistened with squeezed juice and steamed with a hot iron. The procedure is repeated several times, not allowing the juice to dry completely. Lemon juice should not be used on colored fabrics due to discolouration.
Corrector
The home removal method depends on the composition:
- Water based. Use laundry soap or foam emulsion.
- On alcohol. Similar solvents are used:
- alcohol;
- acetone;
- vodka.
Old stains are wiped with gasoline and white spirit.
Iron marks
You can get rid of a fresh stain with a home remedy by pouring milk and curdled milk onto it and leaving it for 1 hour. The dried mark is removed using onions. Apply grated onion to the fabric, rubbing it well into the fibers. After 2-3 hours the product is washed.
Blood
First of all, and this is the basic rule, clothes should be immediately soaked in cold water. Hot water should not be used under any circumstances, as it will cause the protein to coagulate and further embed the stain into the fabric.
After soaking, rub the stain with laundry soap. After a short amount of time, you can wash the item as usual. On white fabric, a blood stain can be easily removed with hydrogen peroxide diluted in water. Simply apply the mixture to the stain and wait a little time. A mixture of water and salt gives an excellent effect.

- You can rub the stain with denatured alcohol, then wash it.
- If the paint on the fabric is unstable, then treat the stain with glycerin mixed with egg yolk 1:1.
Red wine stain
Having celebrated some significant event, we often notice traces of red wine on our clothes. Don't be upset, the situation can be improved.
A fresh stain should be blotted with a napkin and treated with a paste of salt and water. The salt will instantly absorb the remaining wine. Then simply wash the item.
Blood stains
Troubles can happen to anyone; there are different situations when blood stains remain on clothes. The following tools will help you remove them:
- If the blood stain is fresh, rinse the item under running cold water, and when the main stain has disappeared, wash it by hand with laundry soap.
- If the fabric is white, use hydrogen peroxide diluted with water. Pour the solution onto the stain, wait, then rinse, wash.
- A paste of salt and water will also help in this case.
Tea and coffee
Everyone encounters similar spots:
- Traces of tea, especially fresh ones, are easily removed with a gruel containing salt and warm glycerin.
- For coffee marks, a mixture of table salt and ammonia will help.
- Cafe au lait marks can be removed using lighter fuel.
Foundation and other cosmetics
- Accidentally left marks from bright lipstick can be removed in a very original way by spraying hairspray on the stain. Immediately after such actions, you must wash the item in soapy water.
- Often foundation, powder and other decorative cosmetics leave marks on the collars of blouses. These stains can be easily removed with cotton wool and ammonia.
Deodorant
Not all deodorants and antiperspirants are as “traceless” as advertised. Often they leave whitish or yellowish traces. You can get rid of them like this:
- On light-colored fabrics - using a mixture of cold water and soda (1 tablespoon of soda per 1 glass of water). If there are still marks left, you can pour baking soda onto the stain and rub it. After 30 minutes, wash the item.
- On dark fabrics it is better to use a different method. Mix 1 teaspoon of salt with 1 teaspoon of ammonia. After applying this mixture to the fabric, wait 15 minutes, rinse and wash the clothes.
Rust
The rust stain should be moistened with lemon juice, then a hot iron should be applied through the gauze, but without allowing the stain to dry. The procedure should be repeated several times until the result is achieved.
Corrector
Concealer stains are not uncommon on schoolchildren’s clothes. If you do not use special products, they will not go away even after repeated washings:
- If the corrector is water-based, rub the stain with laundry soap and wash.
- To remove alcohol or emulsion corrector stains, use vodka, alcohol, tonic or acetone.
- If the corrector stubbornly refuses to wipe off, try white spirit, gasoline or another solvent.
Advice from experienced housewives
There are guidelines to consider before you begin stain removal. As well as rules that will allow you to more effectively cope with any pollution:
- Start treating the stain on the fabric from the wrong side - from the edge to the center.
- Create a “buffer zone” around the stain by sprinkling it with starch or talcum powder. This will protect the fabric from streaks.
- An old stain should first be moistened in cold water and treated with glycerin, then washed in a warm soapy solution (or carbonated mineral water).
- Do not use alcohol-containing solvents or acids to remove stains on colored and synthetic fabrics.
- On fresh stains left by berries and fruits, you should first pour boiling water over them and wash them in warm soapy water. Another option is to use 9% vinegar with lemon juice.
- Hydrogen peroxide will clean ketchup stains on clothing (be sure to wear rubber gloves before applying). Then rub well and rinse the contaminated area with water.
- Alcohol or acetone will remove the ink. Pour onto the stain. Leave for up to half an hour and wash with regular washing powder. If necessary, the procedure should be repeated.
- If a child gets dirty with chocolate, it is better to wash it first in salt water.
- Blood stains are difficult to remove. In this case, try putting a mixture of crushed aspirin tablets and water on the contaminated area soaked in cold water. Leave to dry for a while and wash in warm soapy water. You can use another option: moisten the stain with hydrogen peroxide, leaving it for 5 minutes and wash thoroughly.
- A method that has proven itself among young mothers in the fight against baby stains is to mix one tablespoon of liquid dishwashing detergent with 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide. Pour onto the stain (no need to rub) and leave for up to 30 minutes.
- A remedy prepared from a glass of warm water and the juice of one lemon (tsp. citric acid) will help get rid of a rust stain. To do this, dip a cloth in the solution and apply it to the stain. Iron and wash in water. Then wash as usual.
- A stain on a leather product can be washed with a solution prepared from 3 parts alcohol, 1 part water and dried. You can't rub it.
