Russian and foreign standards

First, about Russian bed linen sizes and the table of standards. Strictly speaking, few enterprises strictly adhere not only to GOST, but to the generally accepted dimensional grid. Most of them produce several lines at the same time in order to “cater” to the whole variety of blankets. They “walk” relative to this very grid and each other by about 10 cm in one direction or another.

There are many foreign manufacturers present on the Russian home textile market today. They produce sets that differ in parameters from our bed linen, and the sizes in the table below are based on averages for Italy, Germany, Austria, Turkey and China. Thanks to the differences between different types, countries and manufacturers, today you can find bedding sets for any bed. Here is a general list.

One and a half sets

At the moment, the minimum size that can be found on sale is 1.5 bedroom. For a single bed, even standard sizes of bed linen are not indicated anywhere except in old Soviet reference books. The usual equipment for a semi-truck is: a duvet cover, a sheet and 2 (most often) pillowcases. It is designed for 1 or two people and a sleeping place up to 120-140 cm. Important:

• The inscription Single or 1-bed on the package means that only 1 pillowcase is included.
• German and Austrian sets often come without a sheet, just a duvet cover and pillowcases.
• Italian ones often have narrow (with normal length) duvet covers, 140 cm wide.

Sheets with elastic

A sheet with an elastic band is an excellent option for those who like not just to sleep, but to toss and turn in their sleep. This is the so-called cover that fits tightly on the mattress. In order to make a choice, just look at the size. It corresponds to a sleeping place.

There is no need to think when choosing such a sheet. That it may not fit the height of the mattress. It is generally standard and manufacturers produce a standard height - 17–30 cm. In some cases, when purchasing, you can see a number in parentheses next to the size. This means that the manufacturer specifies the height of the product, namely for which mattress the sheet is intended.

Double and Euro standard

The 2nd set has more sheets and duvet covers than the 1.5 bedroom set, and the number of pillowcases can be increased to four, with the additional two being decorative. The estimated width of the sleeping place is 140-150 cm. Double bed linen is most typical for Russia and China; it is rare, but found, made in Germany (without sheets). In other producing countries it is replaced by the Euro-standard size.

The Euro standard - also known as Queen bedding size - is usually the same even among different countries. The exception is Italy. Sets from this country may include a duvet cover 200x250 cm and a sheet 250x290 cm. The number of pillowcases here also varies from 2 to 4. Designed for a mattress from 160 cm wide. Many Austrian “Euro-standard” sets come without a sheet, here you need to be careful when choosing, see the link for more details.

Standard duvet covers

A standard type duvet cover can be of different widths. As a rule, domestic manufacturers offer 145, 175, 200 and 220 cm for purchase. For foreign manufacturers, the width of the duvet cover is approximately 15 cm larger. In order to choose a product, you just need to pay attention to the size of the duvet itself.

No matter how much you would like to use a large duvet cover for a small blanket, sooner or later you will have to abandon this idea, and all because inside, due to the large space and constant movement at night, the blanket will bunch up into one lump.

Therefore, when purchasing a blanket, you should choose the right duvet cover for it.

If you already have a blanket, then you should use a measuring tape to measure the size of the blanket and add 5-10 centimeters in width and length. In this case, you will get the perfect size accessory.

Family

Surely you have heard the designation related to bed - “duet”, what is it? This is the so-called “family” set (more details at the link), it includes 2 “one-and-a-half” duvet covers, 1 large sheet and 2-4 pillowcases. For a sleeping place 160-180 cm. An excellent option when one of the couple (or both) likes to wrap themselves in a blanket.

The most common size of duvet covers in such bedding sets is 150x210, but if you want more, pay attention to Turkish products (160x220). But among the Austrian ones there may be short products. This is not a rule, but it is still worth paying attention to this point.

Choosing the right one

To decide which type of set you should choose, you need to measure the sleeping area. Armed with a tape measure, measure the width and length of the mattress, pillows, and blankets. To the results obtained for the width of the mattress we add 80-100 centimeters, and for the duvet cover – 5-6 to the data of the blanket.

Euro-maxi – King size

The largest types of bed linen, the dimensions of which are suitable for beds from 180 cm wide. The dimensions of the duvet cover are standard for all countries (220x240), but the sheets may vary. The widest and longest are in Turkish sets: 270x310, 290x310, Russian ones, on the contrary, are most often 220x240.

Important! On packages of bed linen you can see the designation of parameters in the following form: 80x220+30, if we are talking about a sheet with an elastic band, and 50x70+5 (70x70+5), if we are talking about pillowcases with decorative piping.

This means:

• 80x220 is the size of the sheet according to the sleeping area, and +30 is the height of the sides that hug the sides of the mattress.
• 50x70 are the dimensions of the pillowcases, and +5 is the width of the decorative edging on them.

Teenage and children's

Teenage sets are close or completely consistent with the sizes of one-and-a-half - adult bed linen. Most often they differ only in color and number of pillowcases: in most cases there is one, less often - two. Turkish and Austrian sets are the largest, suitable even for an adult.

Pillowcases

For pillows, choosing bedding is even easier. They are standard and have two sizes: 50 by 70 and 70 by 70 in centimeters. As for orthopedic pillows, special pillowcases are selected for them, which differ in non-standard sizes. These pillowcases can be made with a zipper or elastic. But the main thing to understand is that the sizes of bed linen with orthopedic pillows are not standard.

The main thing when choosing bed linen is to start with the size of all elements. Next, you can pay attention to the quality and composition of the fabric from which the bed linen is made.

Suitable - not suitable

Now let’s talk about how to determine the size of bed linen that is right for you. When choosing, you need to take into account the parameters of all its elements at once. Let's start with the sheets. She may be:

• Ordinary. The ideal option is the width of the sleeping place + the full height of the mattress with an increase of about 5 cm. Excessive length and width is acceptable for it: the larger the canvas, the smoother it lies and the less it gets confused.
• Tension. In this case, the packaging indicates the dimensions corresponding to the size of the bed. That is, if the sheet is intended for a 140x200 mattress, then you will see these numbers. Additionally, the height of the side is indicated (equal to the height of the mattress for which the product is intended).

A set with a fitted sheet will most likely cost more than a regular one. Such an overpayment will be fully justified by the ease of use of the bed sheet: the elastic band secures the sheet well on the mattress, preventing it from straying to the side. The second is the size of the blanket. When choosing a duvet cover, consider:

• Reserve for possible shrinkage. For pure cotton and linen, it is better to make an increase of 5-7 cm, if the composition contains a significant amount of synthetics - about 3 cm.
• Maximum error. Up to 10 cm is not at all critical in the operation of the product. That is, if your blanket is 140 cm wide, and the duvet cover, judging by the inscription on the package, is 150 cm, it’s okay. A difference of more than 10 cm may cause some inconvenience.

And finally, pillowcases. Always pay attention to their sizes. In Russian sets they are standard, 70x70, and 50x70 are found only as an addition (in “Euro-standard” and “Euro-maxi”). In Chinese, the situation is most often the same. But underwear produced in other countries can only contain pillowcases 50x70.

Important: a good pillowcase should have a sufficiently deep flap (about 20 cm), or be fastened with buttons or a zipper. Unfortunately, the packaging only indicates the type of fastener or the inscription “valve”, without specifying the dimensions.

Types of sizes

Bed linen sets are completed with several items and differ in size range. A variety of fabrics for sewing, mainly natural textiles, less often mixed with a high content of cotton, linen and silk.

The complete set is indicated by the manufacturer on the packaging. There is also a size marking: from single and one and a half to king. A separate group consists of sets for children and teenagers. The variety of sizes is dictated by a large assortment of bedding: blankets of excellent length and width, traditional and orthopedic pillows, and the features of modern furniture.

Important! When calculating how much material you will need when sewing bedding yourself, you need to add an allowance of 3-4 cm to the measurements of the blanket, pillows and mattress and, if necessary, additionally for shrinkage of the fabric.

Sewing companies do not adhere to the rigid framework and recommendations of GOST, and the length and width of the sleeping item may vary. Therefore, when purchasing, it is important to read the information on the packaging. The marking system requires special attention: it can be centimeters or inches.

Single and one-and-a-half-bed rooms

Previously common single bedding sets have gradually left their leading positions and are rare. Designed for one person. Consists of a pillowcase, sheet and duvet cover. Each item can be purchased separately.

This type is used mainly in hospitals, camps, inexpensive hostels, train cars and economy class cabins.

Not much different from a single set of lorry. This type was originally designed for married couples sleeping in the same bed.

The domestic manufacturer labels these sets “1 (1.5)-bed”, the foreign supplier labels them “single” and “extra-long single”, respectively.

Double

Despite the variety of colors and prints, double sets are designed for adults. Sometimes PBCs can be made from fabrics with bright patterns, more suitable for a children's bedroom. But here there are no restrictions in the choice of design solutions.

This type is suitable for a bed or sofa intended for relaxation by two adults. The dimensions of the sheets from a double bed linen set range in width from 180 to 200 cm. Pillowcases can be different: 50x70 or 70x70 cm, and the quantity can be 2 or 4. Dimensions of a duvet cover for a double textile set: 200-220 x 180-200 cm.

The markings for double beds look like this: “2-bed”, “double” or “full”.

Euro

The Euroset differs in size from classic double bed linen. Blankets and mattresses in furniture made according to European standards are larger in width. Such a sleeping place promotes comfortable rest, and accessories remain in place during sleep.

Those who are going to buy or sew a euro set of bed linen should be guided by the sizes indicated in the table. The Euro sheet in this set has the following parameters:

• width - from 200 to 240 cm;
• length - 220 to 260 cm.

In the KPB Euro standard for a duvet cover looks like this:

• width - from 200 to 220 cm;
• length - from 210 to 220 cm.

Pillowcases are standard in two sizes: 50x70 cm or 70x70 cm. There are 2 or 4 of them in a set. The “Queen” marking is used by foreign manufacturers. It means the equivalent of a domestically produced European kit. The sheet in the “Queen” set can be made with elastic at the edges for a secure fit. In this case, the parameter is marked as follows: length, width, height of the side stripe.

Euro Maxi and King size

The difference between the KPB Euromaxi and the standard European one is in the increased length of the sheet and duvet cover: up to 270 and 240 cm, respectively.

Bedding collected in one set, marked “King size”, is a rare set for a bed larger than a double. King size sleeps three.

This type of furniture is preferred by those who like to luxuriate in a comfortable bed of non-standard dimensions (very wide). The parameters of the items included are the same as the euro sheets, except for the maxi sheet, the length of which is from 290 to 310 cm and the width from 250 to 270 cm.

Family sizes

The family set has another name - duet. The difference from the standard ones is that instead of one there are two duvet covers. This solution is convenient for couples who prefer a separate blanket.

When marking a family bedding set, the duvet cover sizes indicate standard sizes. They are identical to one-and-a-half-sleeper ones: 145x200 - 210 cm.

Teenage and children's

CPB for children is divided into different groups. The “baby bed” label indicates that it is suitable for newborns and toddlers. The length of a standard crib mattress for a baby is from a meter to 110 cm. It is important to select a sheet so that its edges cover it on the sides (40 cm more on each side).

The sizes of baby bedding for a crib may vary depending on the furniture parameters. There are 3 standards of mattresses for children:

• for newborns and nursery groups;
• preschool age;
• teenage.

For teenage PBC, the length and width indicators are identical to the one-and-a-half sets for adults.

When choosing a PBC for children, you should study the characteristics:

• quality of textile materials;
• color scheme;
• completeness and dimensions.

Pillowcases

Standard pillowcases are square or rectangular. In versions for adults, fasteners are made in the form of a hidden zipper, buttons or Velcro (Velcro). For children, pillowcases are often made with a valve (smell), which do not require additional elements, or with ties.

For newborns, pillows are made flat and small in rectangular shape. For orthopedic class products, pillowcases are included. Most often, the manufacturer focuses on standard sizes.

Important! Euro pillows differ in size from GOST. Their length is 80 cm and width is 40 cm.

When choosing a model, they are guided by the dimensions of the mattress; standard data is given in the table:

For a Euro sheet with an elastic band, the width and length are equal to the parameters of the mattress, and the height of the side parts is equal to its thickness.

Important! Material for self-sewing PCBs should be de-decatinated before cutting. This will minimize shrinkage of the fabric in future use. If it is not possible to decatify, you can apply preliminary wet-heat treatment using a steam generator or an iron with steam supply.
