Lifehacks for the home: 15 things you can make from an old pillow

Home/Articles/Why is it better not to throw away old pillows?

Today, everyone sleeps on pillows, but over the years they can wear out and become unusable. In such a situation, you need to go to the store and buy a new one. Well, most people simply throw away the old pillow. But you don’t need to do this, because an old pillow can come in handy in life.

Of course, this may sound quite strange, but it is still better to think about leaving the old pillow. As it turns out, experienced people who love a variety of life hacks can easily come up with several ways to use old pillows to make their life easier.

Give to pets

The stuffing from an old pillow can be used as litter for a hamster cage, or as compost material. And the pillow itself as a whole can be given to your pet, which certainly won’t miss the opportunity to lie on something soft.

Why do pillows need to be changed?

Many people don't like to part with their favorite things, especially pillows. And in vain, since long-term use can lead to illness.

Important! After only 3 years, even the highest quality down product should be replaced.

Avoid sleeping with dust mites

This is due to the fact that the contents of the product become an excellent breeding ground for various microorganisms, namely dust mites. The insect feeds on microscopic skin debris that you leave on your pillow. One or more dust mites cannot cause any harm. But over time they multiply, their number exceeds tens of thousands.

Now think about it, have you ever gotten up with a runny nose or very tired, although there were no prerequisites for such a condition? It's all about the dust mite , or more precisely, in the reaction to its waste products.

Removing these insects is an almost impossible task. Even if you remove absolutely all the mites, after a week they may reappear in the old product . Therefore, it is recommended to change the pillow every 5-7 years.

What if the filler is different?

What about synthetic things that ticks simply cannot live in?

Yes, these insects cannot reproduce there, nor can they breed. But it’s worth remembering that over time, the synthetic filler simply gets lost and becomes unusable . The same goes for silk or bamboo.

So, doctors insist on changing pillows. But it’s not just doctors who are talking about these products. There are many signs that convey people's experience and attitude.

Handwash

Hand washing pillows is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. A new bedstead is prepared in advance, which can be easily sewn from dense teak.
  2. Warm water is drawn into the bathroom and a soap solution is added.
  3. The product is steamed, the fluff and feathers are placed in water in small portions for several hours.
  4. Next, the feathers are removed from the bathroom using a regular colander.
  5. The filler is washed under running water and packed in a bag sewn from several layers of gauze.
  6. The bag with the filling is placed in the machine and the spin is set at minimum drum speed.
  7. After this, the bag with feathers is placed in a well-ventilated area until completely dry.
  8. The last step is to fill the new quills with washed and dried feathers.

Important! Washing the filling of feather pillows is allowed only if the product is filled with waterfowl down. It is strictly forbidden to wash chicken feathers.

Replace open shelves with cabinets

Shelving with open shelves has been very popular for many years. Such furniture is considered convenient, since you can take the desired item at any time. However, it is not without its drawbacks.

Even neatly arranged items on open shelves look a little cluttered, especially if there are a lot of them. This comes from the fact that all your books and things are in plain sight. Put them in cabinets with doors and your room will look tidier.

Old pillows: why can't you throw them away?

As already mentioned, they need to be changed at least once every 5 years. It was believed that negative energy was concentrated in them, and its clots could affect a person’s health and mood . Moreover, they darken the aura of the home.

But, as we already said, you can’t throw them away! After all, it is in them that your thoughts, memories, and energy are stored . This means that someone else can spoil you .

What she made from old pillowcases is beyond praise... Imagination has no limits!

Recently I was visiting one of my school friends. She is currently on maternity leave and has two mischievous twins growing up. It cannot be said that she has a lot of free time, but what Olga did simply amazed me. What a find! Probably every housewife still has old sheets and pillowcases that have already gone out of use, but it’s a pity to throw them away. They are often used as rags, but there are more sophisticated ways to reuse such fabric.

Second life for old things

Nowadays, reusing old things has become fashionable to reduce the amount of waste and significantly reduce the cost of purchasing new items. Who would have thought…

Patchwork Quilt

To make a quilt, you need to sew multi-colored pieces of fabric and put pieces of cotton wool between them. If you choose bright patches, then overall you can get a very stylish bedspread that will decorate any room.

It is believed that the patchwork style is quite monotonous. But by playing with colors, patterns and textures, you can create a wide variety of decorative and interior elements: soft and delicate, autumn-warm or, conversely, bright and funny.

Children's tent And here is the craft that I saw while visiting a friend. Simply amazing, isn't it?

What could be better for children than their own tent, and what’s more, made by their beloved parents! True, to build such a structure, mom and dad will have to work hard.

Bright sheets are ideal for a children's tent, although plain white sheets will also fit perfectly into the interior.

Woven rug for the floor As you can see, it’s not so difficult to make a bright rug for the bathroom or hallway from sheets. To do this, you will need several multi-colored canvases, a base frame for the rug, a sewing machine and a little patience.

To create such a colorful rug, you need to cut a sheet into small strips, twist them into many braids and attach them to the base. The work is a little labor-intensive, but the result is gorgeous!

After viewing these photos, you will definitely think about whether or not to throw away your old pillowcases and sheets. I would be glad if these ideas inspire you to create your own original products.

Curtains

Curtains made using the patchwork technique will become the highlight of the interior. To make them you will need different pieces of fabric. You can use old pillowcases, duvet covers, sheets.

Trinket box

From a cardboard box and a pillowcase you can make a box like this, which is good for storing toys, threads, medicines and other things.

Pillowcase without sewing in 3 minutes!

Sew mattresses for children!

This is a very original idea for making useful crafts for the home. You will need simple materials, your desire, enthusiasm and minimal sewing skills.

These lounger mattresses are very practical and you can make them for adults too - in this case, you just need to take into account the length of the fabric and the number of pillows. In addition to using them at home, you can also take them with you to nature and any other trips. After all, they are compact, easy to fold and easy to wash.

So, are you already eager to get started?

Then go ahead!

You can buy pillowcases or sew them yourself. You will need about 4-5 pieces. Their color, print and fabric can be completely different, because it all depends on your taste and preferences. Next, these pillowcases need to be sewn together, and the holes for the pillows should be on one side - place them all on one side.

You can also make the pillows yourself, or, in my opinion, it will be much easier to buy about 4-5 of the simplest and most inexpensive pillows. Insert the pillows into the resulting compartments from the pillowcases, and you're done! That’s how simple, quick, inexpensive, and most importantly, WITH YOUR OWN HANDS, you can make a mattress for all occasions.

As far as you can already understand, caring for it is simply elementary - take the pillows out of the compartments, throw the pillowcase cover into the washing machine - and that’s it!

Machine washable

Washing in an automatic machine will look a little easier:

  1. The napkin is ripped open, and its contents are put into a bag made of thick fabric and sewn up.
  2. Down or feathers are washed at a water temperature of no higher than 40 degrees with powder without bleach.
  3. The delicate washing mode is set with a minimum number of spin speeds.
  4. After the machine washes, the bags with filling are hung out to dry in the sun.

Wash at 40 degrees

Important! If you put under-dried filling into a new bedsheet, mold will form and an unpleasant odor will appear.

Hang light curtains

Many people think that heavy curtains with drapes, tassels and laces look elegant. However, such curtains are only appropriate in a spacious living room. In a small room they make an overwhelming impression.

If you want the atmosphere in a small room to promote rest and relaxation, then choose light curtains in neutral shades.
