And old belts have a use: 10 interesting things you can do in an evening

A little unpainted wood and leather details on a white background - this is the simplest but effective recipe for a laconic Scandinavian interior. Designers realized this a few years ago, and minimalist accessories and furniture with leather accents are easy to buy at any fashion store. But the beauty of “Scandinavia” is that you don’t have to spend a lot of money: you can do simple things with your own hands.

Our selection today includes three dozen ways to make beautiful things using strips of leather or used leather belts (we care about animals and recommend doing just that if possible).

Handles for cabinets and chests of drawers

A way to make your white Ikea chest of drawers or mongrel wardrobe not just boring, but beautiful. There are many options for attaching handles. You can, as blogger Aahley Rose suggests, simply nail strips of thin leather to the end of the drawer front. You can take stronger leather and use screws to make handles like traditional wooden ones. If you have a nail or screw with a beautiful head, feel free to attach the loop handle directly to the facade. Well, perfectionists will like it if the fasteners are not visible at all, and the hinges protrude from the slot on the facade (ideally, they should be secured from the inside out beautifully, for example, using a wooden stick inserted into the hinge).

Causes of belt sagging and twisting

Quite often a situation arises when, even after wearing the belt for a short time, its edge begins to “wiggle”, stretch and twist. This happens for a number of reasons:

  • a change in technology, during which the skin is cut across the collagen fibers;
  • using leather not from the “back” part of the skin, but from the sides or belly;
  • a special technological process for welding collagen fibers, which reduces the cost of production;
  • poor quality material.

In order to avoid such problems with the belt, you should choose products from a trusted manufacturer . Prices for such a belt will be in the “above average” category. But this will make it possible to use it for a long period of time without losing its appearance.

Shelf holders

Designers love to attach shelves to leather straps. You can watch master classes here, here, and here. As with handles, pay attention to the fasteners. You can screw regular hooks into the wall, or you can make sure that even the metal parts look great.

Old leather belt

The things of our ancestors are often precious, like memories. One cannot raise one’s hand to throw away the old grandfather’s belt from his army days. If you turn the thing in your hands, it is of excellent quality, almost uncracked, even though it has lain idle for a dozen years. It just got pretty stiff, and the buckle lost its attractive appearance. The thought arises - you can update this beautiful belt and wear it on your favorite fishing or hunting trip! All that remains is to figure out how to properly breathe a second life into an old leather belt. Perhaps it will last for a long time if it is made conscientiously.

In the handmade accessories store 2 Bisons (St. Petersburg), we guarantee the wear resistance of all belt models for many years. Choose wonderful gifts for yourself and your loved ones! For a formal appearance and a daily look.

Recipes from master leatherworkers.

Leather experts advise softening the hard leather of an old belt with a silicone lubricant. It is usually used for coating molds during the plastic molding process. This is an effective way to revive belt material super quickly. And to the degree of softness that you desire.

There is another option: a couple of vials of regular glycerin plus castor oil, and the result is obvious. It is convenient to rub the product into the belt tape with a toothbrush. When treating an old surface, it is better to knead the leather by hand. Both during the process and between stages of work. The result is great. The leather material became a little darker, which is natural. Try stretching the product with your hands - it is pliable again. And it creaks a little, almost like new. The next step is to give shine to the battered buckle, and the belt is back in service.

How to remove dirt?

It happens that an old belt requires not only restoration of the leather, but also cleansing of stains and dirt. Feel free to soak material that has been sitting for a long time in water. Additionally, foam from baby soap and a brush to remove dirt will help. Well, rinsing the skin in a light vinegar solution will partially restore its former elasticity.

Warm, but not boiled milk perfectly fights the dirt of an old product. But remember that milk fat penetrates the structure of natural leather. Also, it is recommended to remove traces of fat using talc or a solution of household acid - oxalic acid.

Restoring the color of the old belt.

The above-mentioned glycerin and castor oil liquid will help out if you need to return the lost color to an accessory. Any color of a leather item, except white, will come to life along with elasticity and shine if you rub coffee grounds into the front part.

Bleaching is a completely different process. The whiteness of the belt is ready to return to you in a year if you keep the product in a special solution: dilute a quarter of a small packet of laundry bleach in a liter of water, but only without chlorine. The liquid must be heated to a temperature of at least 50 degrees. Dip the belt into the bleach solution. As soon as the liquid has cooled, take it out and look at the result.

Well, it is quite possible to restore the previous degree of fat loss in several ways. Experts advise choosing one of the technologies: a 50-gram mixture of castor oil and egg white. An emulsion of butter diluted in heated water, sprinkle a couple of drops of ammonia into it.

It is practical to apply the grease mixture with a non-stiff brush or cloth swab. Do not forget to remove excess product from the surface of the accessory with a slightly damp piece of cloth.

The collection of belts definitely needs to be replenished with new items. Choose branded handmade items in the showroom of the 2 Bison store, which is located in the very center of St. Petersburg.

Holders for hanger bars

The same as with shelves, only even simpler. These slats can be used in the kitchen or bathroom: they are convenient for hanging towels. The main thing is to fasten the crossbar with leather loops so that the structure does not fall apart. However, if you do this only on one side, it will be possible to broadcast handbags, beads or ties onto such a crossbar.

Magazine loops (and more)

This is just an elementary piece of Scandinavian design. A leather loop that doesn't need a dresser or shelf. Maybe, as Swedish designer Mathilda Clahr suggests, keep a fashion magazine, a coat rack and much more. Laconic and beautiful.

The loops can be made from ordinary belts and secured to some kind of grid (on the advice of designer Riikka Kantinkoski) or crossbar. Please note: in the second photo the loop is removable, it is punched with grommets and put on a hook driven into the wall, but here the loop is combined with a hanger-pin for greater functionality.

This is what this inventive girl did with old belts and threads...

It would seem, how can an ordinary small rug change the interior? Nevertheless, it is this thing that creates an atmosphere of coziness and comfort in the house. But it is cozy housing that protects a person from stress and helps to renew after difficult days. It is pleasant to stand on a soft knitted or wicker rug with your bare feet in the morning; in the bathroom, the mat will absorb excess water and prevent you from slipping on a wet floor; You can wipe dirty shoes on the doormat and leave them to dry.

Of course, you can buy any rug in the store, but how wonderful it is to at least sometimes do something with your own hands. So why not make a rug for yourself! Moreover, the material can be old things, which sometimes should not be thrown away.

DIY rug made from old things

You will be surprised, but from old leather belts, threads, fabrics, wine corks and even labels from jeans you can create useful and stylish things for the home. To do this, you need to find out step-by-step instructions for creating a rug, stock up on the necessary materials and patience.

Making a mat from belts is quite simple. All you need is 10-12 belts made of natural or artificial leather, an awl or punch, twine or rope.

The belts need to be made the same length by cutting off the buckle. Make holes along the edges of the straps at a distance of approximately 3 cm from each other and 0.5 cm from the edge. Secure them together using thin hemp rope. The order of pulling the rope is arbitrary; you can fasten it along the belts, across it, crosswise between the holes.

Wine cork rug

Wine bottle corks are an excellent material for a variety of crafts for the home and garden. Cork practically does not absorb moisture, and bacteria do not multiply in it. This is why cork is great for the bathroom.

In addition, walking on a cork mat is not only very pleasant, but also good for your feet.

To create this small rug you will need 150 wine corks, glue, a rubber shower mat, a sharp knife, coarse sandpaper and a cutting board.

Wash the plugs thoroughly in soapy water. To remove red wine stains, you can soak them in a bleach solution, then rinse and dry.

Divide each cork lengthwise into two pieces using a cutting board and a sharp knife.

Place the corks with the cuts down on the table as they will be located on the rug, and decide on the size of the future rug. Then cut out the base of the required size from the rubber material. The cork pattern can be anything - it all depends on your imagination.

Glue the corks to the base with glue suitable for gluing such surfaces.

The cork mat must dry completely. To make it waterproof, you can treat the surface with a sealant.

For prevention, it is advisable to dry a cork rug that will be in the bathroom in the sun at least once a month.

Rug made from jeans labels

This idea surprised and delighted me at the same time. A rug made from labels from old jeans is a labor-intensive, but completely unusual and original project. But where can you find so many labels?

To make such carpets with your own hands, it is better to sew labels onto some kind of fabric, maybe even thin. Labels sewn on each other will additionally give the carpet the necessary density. It is better to use a sewing machine for this work, since manually sewing on each label is a very lengthy process.

The lines should be made around the perimeter of the label, where it was sewn to the jeans. The pattern can be anything: an even mesh, a herringbone, a spiral for a round carpet, but labels sewn on top of each other in a slightly irregular order look most impressive.

Moss rug

Residents of cities, with their frantic pace of life, are deprived of the opportunity to run barefoot on the grass every day. These simply stunning, in my opinion, moss rugs are designed to return to the inhabitants of city apartments a feeling of closeness to nature.

Designer La Chanh Nguyen decided that standing barefoot on the grass can be done in a city apartment, and came up with a bathroom rug made from forest moss.

This rug is made from recycled latex foam, predominantly from plants. Each cell contains a piece of forest moss. The humidity in the bathroom, as well as the water that flows onto the rug from the body and feet, are natural sources of moisture for moss plants, so the rug will not require any additional care. How I dream about this!

For a bedroom or children's room, it is better to choose soft, fluffy rugs. Just look how bright and interesting rugs made from pompoms look in the interior. And it’s not at all difficult to make one!

To make this adorable pom pom rug, you'll need thick wool knitting thread, a mesh rug backing, and scissors.

Make pompoms in different colors to create a smooth gradient color transition. You can make a plain rug or lay out a specific pattern. You can also play with the sizes of pompoms, using large, smaller and very small ones.

Tie each pom pom to the net so there are no gaps between pom poms, while maintaining the color scheme.

The reverse side of a rug with knots can be covered with fabric so that the rug is beautiful from all sides, even from the inside out.

And if you haven’t found a suitable base mesh, pompoms can be sewn to any fabric.

Detail of upholstered furniture

Does your cushion keep sliding off your stool or chair, and the laces or Velcro closures seem ugly? Secure them with leather loops. In combination with good fabric they will look even noble.

Larger loops can be used to hang the pillow on the wall next to which there are stools or a bench - you get a soft backrest.

Handles for everything

Not only cabinets can have leather handles. Removing small baskets from shelves (here's how to make them), moving floor cushions or moving a door stopper () is much more convenient and pleasant using a leather loop than just doing so.

How to soften a leather belt: proven methods

Leather will always be in demand. Products made from this material are durable and can last up to 10 years. If the care of the leather belt was correct and the owner did not neglect cleaning and impregnation, then it will not become dull.

However, for many people the product lies idle for many years (some people keep a belt for a specific occasion, while others have several of them and use only one, and the second as a reserve), as a result the skin becomes rough and inflexible.

You can use home remedies to soften the natural material. They will help restore skin elasticity, flexibility and attractiveness.

Castor oil

This method is one of the best. Castor oil does not deform the product, but, on the contrary, will return it to its former flexibility and attractiveness.

You will need a lot of castor oil. Buy 10 bottles of the product, it’s better to have some leftover than to often run to the pharmacy.

Prepare an unnecessary rag or towel. Castor oil is greasy and sometimes you will have to dry your hands.

How to soften leather belts:

  1. Take the product, unscrew the cap and pour it into another container. You can apply the oil with a pipette, a cloth, or immediately pour large drops from the bottle along the entire length of the belt.
  2. Use your hands or a sponge to rub the product over the entire surface. Process gradually inside and out, try not to miss a single area.
  3. The belt will begin to darken, this is normal. Leave the belt to soak in the product for a while.
  4. When the castor oil is completely absorbed, the procedure is repeated. And so on until the product stops being absorbed.

Castor oil is the most ideal and suitable option for softening the skin. This method is suitable for belts made of dark material.

Light-colored belts cannot be treated with castor oil. The skin will darken.

Coconut oil

This method is not cheap. Natural coconut oil is expensive, so many people use castor or flaxseed oil to save a little money.

Lubricate the belt with the product and leave it in the sun for about 5 minutes. Thanks to ultraviolet light, the pores will open and the oil will be better absorbed.

It is necessary to repeat the procedure at home until a layer of oil forms on the surface.

Petrolatum

If you need to tidy up a light-colored item, buy Vaseline. It costs a penny, but is effective.

How to make a belt soft:

  1. Take a small amount of Vaseline and apply a small area of the waistband. If all is well, continue applying the ointment over the entire surface.
  2. To restore leather jackets, you can use 2 squirrels, lemon and Vaseline. First, the material is treated with whipped egg white, after 4 hours it is necessary to remove the residue and wipe the surface with a damp sponge. Then treat with a slice of lemon or orange and leave for 2 hours. Afterwards, remove the residue again with a damp cloth and treat with Vaseline. This method can also be used for belts.

Vaseline can soften a leather belt, but its effect does not last long. To bring the item back to life, you need to treat it with ointment every week for 1–2 months.

Isopropyl alcohol

Another good way to bring your belt back to life is to use isopropyl alcohol.

How to soften the leather of a belt? First, treat all surfaces with alcohol. Apply it to a cotton pad and wipe the belt.

After the alcohol is absorbed and the material is dry, treat it with Vaseline.

Linseed oil

Linseed oil copes well with the hardening of leather belts. The product must be rubbed well and left until completely dry.

Then the procedure is repeated.

In addition to softening the product, linseed oil also imparts water-repellent properties.

Wax

Belts of light colors can be treated with wax. To get better results, it is recommended to use it together with Vaseline.

Mix Vaseline and wax in equal parts in a container and apply to the surface of the belt. Repeat the procedure several times.

Glycerol

What else can I use to soften it?

You need to take proper care of your skin. Many people recommend using glycerin to soften it. But after some time, those who have done this procedure see that the remedy does not work.

Glycerin cannot be used. Because of this, the product falls apart. Therefore, do not listen if they advise you to process an item in this way.

Lard or fat

Previously, grandmothers used lard or fat to soften leather products. These natural remedies will probably not damage the item.

The fat needs to be melted and treated with it on the belt. After which the product is left to dry completely, and finally a baby moisturizer is applied.

After 2–3 hours, remove the remaining cream with a napkin.

Baby cream

To restore the elasticity of a leather belt, you can use baby cream. It's better to buy a moisturizer.

Baby cream is applied to the product in a thin layer and left to absorb for a while. Then the procedure is repeated.

It is not recommended to use creams for adults, since they contain substances that are harmful to leather products, but if they are made from natural ingredients, then nothing bad will happen.

Air conditioners

On store shelves there is a fairly large assortment of products that, when used, make the skin soft.

Such conditioners can usually be used to restore jackets and shoes, so don’t be afraid to buy them; they won’t sit idle.

You just need to choose the right air conditioner. Do not use products that contain paraphil or silicone. Such substances will not allow the leather belt to breathe and as a result you will return to where you started.

You need to buy conditioners with lanolin or mink oil. Always read the ingredients before purchasing a product.

Air conditioners saturate the material well. They penetrate the fibers and restore elasticity and flexibility to the skin.

Such products are easier to use and more convenient, so many people prefer store-bought products rather than pharmacy or homemade ones.

You can solve the problem of rough skin yourself or send it to a workshop for restoration. But be prepared for the fact that such a procedure will not be cheap. After all, you will have to pay not only for the softener, but also for the work of the master.

Mount for watch or mirror

Fashionable mirrors and watches suspended on a leather strap can cost up to 48,000, so investing a couple of hours in creating such an item with your own hands is not at all a pity. The most logical place to look for things to experiment with is IKEA. We came across examples of improvements to watches and mirrors.

Curtain tiebacks

Both regular curtains and Roman curtains will look better with such a tieback than without. In the first case, we can be inspired by the works of Mathilda Clahr, already familiar to us, in the second, we are guided by a master class.
