Each of us stores T-shirts in a way that suits us. As a rule, the choice of method is influenced by a number of factors, the main one of which is the availability of free space. But many people save T-shirts in one way or another, only because they are used to it and do not know other options. And in fact there are several of them. We'll talk about this today. It is quite possible that you will want to take some of them (and maybe all at once).
Let's assume an ideal case when there is a lot of clothes and there is also plenty of space in the closet or dressing room. Still need to decide how to properly store T-shirts? But before we talk about the options, let's say a few words about why this is important.
- Firstly, this will allow the clothes to retain their shape and presentable appearance longer, which will extend their service life.
- Secondly, an organized storage system automatically eliminates the second main problem after “I have nothing to wear,” namely, “I can’t find a T-shirt.”
- And thirdly, no matter how large the closet is, in addition to T-shirts, there are many other things and products that also need to have their place in it.
Agree, these arguments are enough to implement a convenient and correct T-shirt storage system, which, in addition to visual harmony, will allow:
- quickly find the model you are looking for;
- arrange things compactly and beautifully;
- make the most of space;
- avoid chaos and easily maintain order.
WAYS TO STORAGE T-SHIRTS
- There are three ways to store T-shirts:
- Hanging on hangers is the easiest way.
- Storage on shelves is the most popular method.
- Storage in drawers is the most compact.
- There are also two ways to lay T-shirts:
- Folding is when each item is first folded in a certain sequence (we'll look at how to do this below), and then all the T-shirts are placed on a shelf (or in a drawer) in a stack, on top of each other.
- Rolling is when each T-shirt is rolled into a compact cylinder-like shape, and in this form, all items are placed vertically or horizontally in an organizer or drawer, close to each other or in designated compartments.
Before getting acquainted with each of the three methods in detail, let’s consider the peculiarities of storing printed T-shirts.
HOW TO CORRECTLY STORE T-SHIRTS WITH A PRINTED IMAGE?
T-shirts come in plain, colored and printed. For the first two, choosing a storage option does not cause problems - you can hang them on hangers, fold them on shelves, or store them rolled up in organizers.
But storing printed products has its own nuances. Pay attention to the design of the T-shirt, meaning the type of embossing.
- If this is sublimation printing, that is, when paint particles are literally soldered to the top layers of the material, forming a pattern that is resistant to washing and mechanical stress and cannot be tactilely felt, then there is no need to worry - you can put it on a shelf, the bends will not appear on the quality of the print.
- And if the design on the clothing is made using the thermal transfer method (such a print can be easily felt), then such a T-shirt should be washed carefully and preferably stored on hangers or, in extreme cases, rolled up without sharp creases.
Now let’s look at all three methods of storing T-shirts in more detail, with their advantages and disadvantages.
METHOD #1 - HANGING T-SHIRTS
This method involves hanging it on hangers (aka hangers), as well as using special hangers for things, including stand-up hangers. Hangers vary in shape, color, design and size. They come with covers and without covers. By type of material: plastic, acrylic, wood, flocked, satin (that is, soft) and metal with silicone coating.
For T-shirts, the best option would be Alean's wooden or plastic hangers with a wide shoulder or satin trempels. These do not deform T-shirts, which cannot be said about thin metal tapes. For this reason, they are rarely used for T-shirts, but mainly for trousers, thick and heavy clothing.
- Pros of hanging:
- Hanging T-shirts on hangers allows them to maintain a neat appearance after ironing or steaming, that is, without folds or folds.
- It is convenient to select the desired model, while all the others will remain untouched and hang on their hangers.
- It is very convenient to arrange T-shirts by color, height and season, which makes choosing the right clothes much easier.
- You get a neat and aesthetically pleasing appearance in your closet.
- Disadvantages of hanging:
- A large number of hangers that you have to constantly buy and which are still not enough.
- Requires quite a lot of space on the boom.
METHOD No. 2 - STORING T-SHIRTS ON SHELVES IN THE CLOSET
This method involves folding clothes horizontally. Each T-shirt can be folded into one, two or more folds - it all depends on the available space on the shelf and the characteristics of the T-shirt.
- Advantages of the method:
- Storing the same number of T-shirts this way will require significantly less space than hanging them on hangers.
- Rarely used T-shirts can be folded into the back of the shelf.
- You get a neat and aesthetically pleasing appearance in your closet.
- Minuses:
- With this type of storage, T-shirts will wrinkle. Synthetic sports models are not afraid of this, but cotton ones will have to be ironed or steamed every time before putting them on.
- Inconvenient to use: impossible to get the right T-shirt without affecting others.
- With a large depth of the shelf, getting out what is stored at the back is quite troublesome.
- The storage process involves carefully folding the T-shirt - you will have to learn and follow this rule every time.
- It is necessary to constantly maintain a neat appearance on the shelves.
METHOD No. 3 - STORING T-SHIRTS IN DRAWERS
This method involves the use of furniture drawers, separate special drawers, textile folding boxes and organizers for storing things. They can be located in a chest of drawers, in a closet, in a wardrobe or dressing room.
They also very often resort to using plastic files with buttons, vacuum bags or vacuum covers. Either option involves storing T-shirts folded or rolled. The latter method is most widespread due to the fact that the T-shirt is laid vertically and takes up little space.
- Pros:
- High level of compactness, which is significantly higher than methods No. 1 and No. 2.
- Provides better viewing and access to contents. It is very convenient to choose what you need, while all other T-shirts remain in place.
- Drawers are great for vertical storage.
- Possibility of sorting by colors, seasons and other parameters.
- Minuses:
- When stored this way, clothes become wrinkled, hence the need for ironing or steaming.
- If there are no drawers, you need to additionally buy organizers, textile or plastic boxes and put them on a shelf in the closet.
Storage on a hanger
An ideal option for owners of spacious wardrobes is to place T-shirts in the closet on hangers. To prevent the T-shirt from becoming wrinkled and dirty, it should have its own hanger. It is recommended to hang it immediately after washing and ironing, so that it remains in presentable condition at any time. For T-shirts with a pattern, this method is especially relevant - the print will be visible and always intact.
Soft hangers with foam rubber and textiles are perfect for this storage method. They will not allow the product to lose its appearance, will not allow it to quickly wrinkle and will not stretch the shoulders. Wooden or plastic hangers are quite suitable for such placement, but placing them on them for too long can affect the shape of the T-shirt, but it’s better not to mess with wire options - they can deform the product or tear it.
The vertical method of storing T-shirts may seem wasteful because you don't have much space in your closet. In this case, use a hanger holder that allows you to store clothes vertically in several rows. It is a plastic plate with holes for 5 hangers, which saves space 5 times.
WAYS TO FOLD T-SHIRTS
The following methods allow you to quickly fold a short- and long-sleeve T-shirt. Such schemes can be easily mastered not only by experienced housewives, but also by children.
Traditional way.
Like in a store.
How to fold a T-shirt neatly and beautifully in one motion? For many, the most acceptable way to learn how to fold a T-shirt is through a video. A video about laying products with one wave of the hands, without a single unnecessary movement, is very popular.
It is worth noting that on sale you can find specially designed devices - “boards for laying T-shirts.” They allow you to speed up the process and achieve the neatest possible result.
Traditional method
2. “Traditional Method” – very similar to the method above, but in a slower and more consistent manner. If you are confused about the "3 grabs" method, try this.
- Place the T-shirt with the back facing up.
- Fold a third of the T-shirt (the sleeve and some more) toward the center.
- Fold the same way on the other side.
- Mentally divide its length into 3 parts, and then, starting from the bottom edge, fold the T-shirt in three times.
- Turn it right side out and look at the result - a neat rectangle, just like from a store shelf.

METHOD OF FOLDING T-SHIRTS USING THE KONMARI SYSTEM
Recently, the system of organizing home life using the Marie Kondo method (Konmari method) has become extremely popular. The famous consultant described the basis of his technique in six rules, one of which says: throw away everything that does not bring joy and find a place for what is left. The technique is so effective that it is taught to children in preschool institutions.
Take advantage of Marie Kondo's unique T-shirt folding method, which allows clothes to be stored both vertically and horizontally. The principle is very simple.
- Lay the T-shirt face down on a horizontal surface.
- Fold the sides of the product inward one at a time.
- Bend the sleeves again, but in the other direction, so that they do not wrinkle.
- You should end up with a long narrow strip that you need to roll into a roller starting from the bottom.
The resulting packages can be laid horizontally in rows or inserted vertically into the cells of the organizer. In this position, there are practically no traces of folding left on things.
Conclusion
If constantly maintaining order in your closet is not your thing or you just don’t want to waste your time on it, then choose option No. 1. By providing enough space on the bar and purchasing the required number of hangers, you will hang T-shirts by color, season, length, and you won’t have to bother with folding or curling them and frequent ironing.
If you like to put things in order, it doesn’t bother you at all to iron things, and folding T-shirts is a pleasure, then your option No. 2 is storing T-shirts on shelves in the closet and (or) option No. 3 - storing them in drawers. In addition, both methods are ideal for a modest-sized wardrobe.
- But in practice, as a rule, all three options are used, sorting clothes according to the principle:
- more significant (expensive) or seasonally relevant T-shirts - on hangers;
- less significant - on shelves and in drawers.
Use our tips and your closet and shelves will look as neat as possible.
