Mouton, like any other natural fur coat, needs periodic cleaning. Since it is absolutely impossible to wash such a delicate item, it would be more reliable to use dry cleaning services.
But in practice, few people resort to such a step, and prefer to clean the fur at home.
It is only recommended to use the most gentle methods so as not to spoil an expensive product. It’s better to first test the selected product on a small area.
If everything is done correctly, then the fur coat will delight its owner with a chic look for many years. We'll tell you how to clean a fur coat below.
Is it possible to use a washing machine?
Is it possible and how to wash a mouton fur coat? Washing by hand or in a washing machine is the worst thing you can do with a mouton fur coat. In addition, wearing a fur coat is risky even when exposed to rain or sleet.
As a result of prolonged contact with water, the natural fat present on the leather base (hide) is leveled. And this leads to the loss of fur elasticity and visual appeal.
Another important point that makes washing a mouton difficult. When moisture is absorbed, the fur becomes so heavy that it is impossible to even lift it with your hands.
Moreover, an automatic machine will not be able to cope with such a task . The result is a damaged item and equipment.
The only thing acceptable for a natural fur coat is surface wet and dry cleaning, as well as professional dry cleaning.
In what cases is it better to contact a dry cleaner?
Sprays and folk remedies do not always help to cope with dirt or grease accumulated on the mouton. The procedure for removing persistent stains is labor-intensive and requires skills in working with chemicals and fur.
If the area of contamination is large, take the item to the dry cleaner. The workshop will remove fat and vomit, remove the smell, and return the gray and black paint to its original color.
The mouton rolls up when worn, professionals can clean it and give it its former shine.

Wet cleaning instead of washing
When processing a product wet, it is important to avoid getting the core (the underside of the skin) wet. If this happens, then after drying it becomes rough and deformed. Therefore, use a thoroughly wrung-out napkin (gauze, cotton cloth) or sponge.
To clean heavily soiled areas, you can use the following products :
- soap solution;
- ethyl or ammonia (ammonia);
- salt;
- table vinegar;
- glycerol;
- lemon juice;
- hydrogen peroxide.
The last remedy is considered the most aggressive , so using it on dyed fur is risky.
Soap solution
To prepare a soap solution, you will need water and something foaming (washing powder, shampoo, baby soap, carpet cleaner).
It is necessary to dilute any of the listed detergents in an amount of 40–50 grams in a liter of warm water. With intensive stirring of the solution, a strong foam should be obtained.
Then a sponge is moistened in the resulting liquid and the fur surface is treated. Remains of foam are cleaned off with a brush dipped in cool water.
If you clean dyed sheepskin, choose a washing powder without a bleaching effect. This does not apply to white fur.
Vinegar and alcohol
A mixture of alcohol and vinegar will help get rid of greasy stains. It is necessary to combine the following ingredients in equal proportions :
- 10% ammonia;
- table vinegar;
- water.
Mix thoroughly and soak a cotton swab or disk with the solution. They go over the entire surface of the fur coat, paying special attention to the most contaminated areas.
Then wipe the fur with a clean, damp cloth and place the item on hangers to dry.
Hydrogen peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide effectively removes greasy shine, yellowness and greasy stains. The recipe for the cleaner is simple.
You need to take 500 ml of water and add:
- 3 tbsp. l. table salt;
- 5–6 ml of hydrogen peroxide.
This option is especially relevant for fur coats made of white and light sheepskin.
Ammonia
A dark mouton fur coat can be cleaned with ammonia. It is mixed with cold water in a ratio of 1:4 .
Then dip a sponge or piece of fabric into the solution and carefully begin to process the fur product.
Even if the fur coat is not very dirty, this recipe will be useful for adding freshness and shine .
After the end of the winter season, it is recommended to use this method before putting the fur coat in the closet for summer storage.
Rules for caring for a mouton fur coat
You can clean mouton clothes using many means. But the easiest way is to avoid serious contamination and take proper care of the fur product. In this case, there is no need to subject it to treatment with aggressive compounds.
Basic Rules:
- Natural mouton fur does not absorb moisture well, so it is better to wear a fur coat on dry days without snow or rain.
- If a mouton fur coat is wet, it should not be put away in a closet or hung on an overflowing hanger in a damp state. The product must be hung on hangers and dried.
- A mouton that is damp after precipitation or after cleaning should be thoroughly combed. Wet fur tends to stick together, and if you comb it when it's dry, the fibers will lose their shine and silky structure.
- You need to dry a mouton fur coat naturally, only at room temperature and with good ventilation. Hanging clothes near the battery or blowing it with a hairdryer is strictly prohibited.
You need to clean the mouton regularly with a brush - this removes dust and prevents lint from matting.
In summer, winter clothes are best stored in a special case that allows air to pass through. In the closet, the fur coat should be located freely, without touching other things. From time to time it is recommended to remove the product from the closet, comb and air it.
Advice! At the end of winter, the mouton pile should be cleaned without using moisture, with a dry brush, even if there is no dirt on it, this will extend the life of the outerwear.
Cleaning from dust
Fur items absorb dust well . Therefore, even in the absence of visible dirt, it would be useful to periodically subject the fur coat to light cleaning.
To do this, just shake the mouton well (it’s better to do this outside) or use a vacuum cleaner turned on at minimum power mode.
Before using the vacuum cleaner, check that the nozzle is exceptionally clean. The smallest particles are instantly transferred to the fur due to static attraction.
In ecologically clean regions, you can lay out your fur coat on the snow, pile side down, and gently beat it with a beater . After this, shake it so that no snow remains on the fur. Otherwise, when it melts indoors, it will harm the pile.
An alternative to this technique is a wetted and wrung out sheet, which is covered with a fur coat and lightly tapped on top (like a carpet). Hang on hangers to dry.
Dry cleaning
For dry cleaning of a mouton fur coat, one of the following products is suitable :
- wheat bran;
- talc;
- semolina;
- starch;
- fine sand.
Proceed as follows:
- The fur coat is laid out on a flat surface.
- The selected cleaning product is preheated in a dry, hot frying pan.
- Spread it evenly over the surface.
- Carefully begin to rub it into the fur.
- Leave the product in this condition for some time so that dirt and grease are absorbed.
- Lift the fur coat and shake well several times.
Professional cleaning products
In addition to traditional methods, professional cleaning products are used to care for a Mouton fur coat. They remove complex contaminants from the fur surface and give it an initial shine and cleanliness. The most effective compositions include:
- Insaf is a special spray for cleaning lint, restoring snow-white cleanliness and combating unpleasant odors. The composition also provides protection against moths. When using it, you need to spray the spray from a distance of 20 cm and begin wiping the surfaces with a cotton cloth. If there are stubborn stains, the procedure will need to be repeated twice.
- Ultra-finish Milk is a substance produced by an Italian company and is intended to restore the shine and silkiness of fur. It also smoothes out hairs.
- BIOFUR is a popular series of cleaning products for fur care. The compositions clean the surface of the mouton fur coat, restore shine and have a delicate effect on the pile.
How to clean white fur at home?
Light mouton requires a special approach when caring. Before you begin the cleaning procedure, you should get a special fur brush.
First, inspect the product for the presence of the most greasy places:
- collar,
- cuffs,
- hem,
- pockets.
Gasoline will help cope with such pollution, but not automobile gasoline, but aviation gasoline.
It is odorless, does not contain harmful impurities and has increased volatility. Therefore, it quickly disappears without a trace . Sold in any hardware department.
There is no need to dilute pure gasoline with anything. Put protective gloves on your hands, moisten the sponge and begin to rub the greasy and yellowed areas on the fur.
Wait a certain amount of time for the pile to dry completely. This is where the procedure ends.
It is recommended to treat fur coats with gasoline in the fresh air. It is unacceptable to smoke while working !
To give a white mouton coat a fresh look, you can use hydrogen peroxide (3%). It is diluted in equal proportions with water and a damp cloth is passed over the entire pile. At the same time, they do not try to wet it too much.
After this, the fur coat is dried naturally and combed. A mixture of hydrogen peroxide and ammonia returns the fur coat to its former shine. It is enough to add a few drops to a bottle of peroxide.
Another equally productive option for cleaning light sheepskin is a combination of soap solution and starch . Cover the stains with starch and spray with soapy water from a spray bottle.
Use your hand to distribute the resulting slurry over the area to be treated. Wait until the applied product dries, and then remove it with a vacuum cleaner or brush.
Removing unpleasant odors
A negative feature of natural fur products is the rapid absorption of unpleasant odors. It is impossible to eliminate them with the help of perfumes or refreshing aerosols, so you will need to resort to folk recipes:
- The fur is treated with a vinegar solution (6%), and then hung on the balcony. The product neutralizes unpleasant aroma and leaves no traces behind.
- To clean dark fur, you can spray it with orange juice diluted half with water from a spray bottle.
- The dried fur coat should be rolled up with the fur side inward, placed in a plastic bag and placed in the freezer for 24 hours.
- Areas with a strong odor are treated with ground coffee beans and placed in a plastic bag for 10-12 hours. Then the remaining coffee is removed with a brush. The technology cannot be used to clean a light fur coat.
- You can place lavender moth bags in the pockets of your fur coat, and then place the product itself in a fabric bag.
- To eliminate a slight odor, hang wet towels near your fur coat. They draw in strong odors such as tobacco.
How to dry it properly?
A mouton fur coat should be dried exclusively in a vertical position on hangers. Be sure to fasten all buttons and existing fasteners. The ambient temperature should be room temperature.
It is unacceptable to use any heating devices or hair dryer to speed up drying.
After the fur has completely dried, you need to comb it with a standard plastic or wooden hair brush . Wet areas should not be touched so as not to tear out the downs.
How to wash the lining at home?
If everything is very clear with cleaning fur, then all that remains is to figure out how to proceed with the lining.
There are two ways to clean it:
- directly on the product;
- pre-rebuff.
Each option has certain difficulties. In the first case, there is a high risk of damage to the product as a whole, in the second, it will take a lot of time and effort.
Having decided to renew the lining fabric without ripping, prepare a soap solution and a soft sponge . Next, you need to dissolve a little soap in warm water. Lightly moisten the sponge in the liquid and begin processing.
Once completed, wipe the fabric again with clean water. Dry with paper napkins. Hair dryers and irons cannot be used.
In the second case, the torn lining is washed by first soaking it in soapy water . After washing and drying, the fabric is ironed and sewn in its original place.
When washing the lining, do not pour too hot water. This will lead to its shrinkage.
Soap solution
White felt boots can be cleaned with a soap solution. To do this, use dishwashing gel, laundry soap or shampoo; you can also use washing powder with bleaching particles or a carpet cleaner.
The procedure must be carried out quickly so that the felt product does not have time to become saturated with moisture.
How to clean felt boots:
- The soap composition is applied to all surfaces. If you do this only to contaminated areas, the washed areas will be very different, and in the sun the felt boots will look spotty.
- Rinse off dirty foam with cold water. This does not mean that the boot needs to be placed under the running stream. Water is taken into the palm and passed over the surface of the felt shoes. You can clean the inside of the boot in the same way. The remaining soap can be removed with a vacuum cleaner.
- Then the felt boots are sent to dry.
The cleaned surface is treated with a rubber felt brush. You can also use a soft clothes brush.
