The oven has several functions: upper and lower heating, air recirculation, grill. There are big differences between individual settings that make the difference between success and failure in cooking. But which oven icon means which function? What is the meaning behind individual symbols?
Not every oven has every feature, so not all icons listed below will be relevant to you. The symbols indicating the basic Back settings are the same for all manufacturers.
Straight lines top and bottom: top and bottom heating
The sign with two lines symbolizes that the heat with this function of the oven comes from both above and below, that is, it is distributed evenly, with soft air circulation, inside the oven, thereby the pie, roast or even soufflé is baked smoothly, without overdrying. Top and bottom heating is a universal function of any oven, although it is the least energy efficient. Energy saving tip for the function: turn off the oven about five minutes before the end of the baking time and use the residual heat.
Advice from professionals
Which grill icon is on the oven is now clear. But how to use this function correctly? On the grill you can cook chicken and sausage, all kinds of hamburgers, sandwiches and toast. If a person loves barbecue, he will also have the opportunity to cook it in his kitchen. This feature will come in handy when the meat has already been marinated, but the weather suddenly changes your picnic plans.
If people do not eat meat, they can grill many healthy, rich dishes that retain their natural flavor, vitamins and microelements.
Straight line from above: top heating
Heat comes only from above with this function. Therefore, this setting is suitable if you want a nice crust for your bread or if you want a crispy casserole. There are also stove models that have two straight lines on top. In this case, the upper heating will be more intense. If you select this oven icon, you must keep an eye on the food, otherwise it will burn very quickly.
How to make convection in an old oven with your own hands
Unfortunately, attempts to independently make a new oven with a convector out of an old oven will often not be successful, so the easiest way is to pay a little extra to buy such equipment in a professional store, which will also come with detailed instructions for use.
Today, convection in household ovens is becoming a common element. This is understandable - after all, thanks to this function, it has become possible to create truly exquisite culinary masterpieces and delight your loved ones with them.
Zigzags or triangles on top: top heat and grill function
The grill function is represented by three connected downward-facing triangles or a zigzag line. If you want to roast something extra deep, such as nuts, meat or vegetables, slide the tray onto the top rack of your oven and select the zigzag icon.

Turn on the grill
You can use only the grill or set it as the main mode. But then the food should be ready to eat. For example, you can cook hot sandwiches or pizza this way. Raw meat will simply burn without being cooked through. Or as a final chord. Then the finished dish will have a browned, crispy crust.
Before using the grill function, the oven is preheated. Electric ovens provide the ability to select the desired mode, for example, fried chicken, using a low or medium grill temperature.
Center fan: air recirculation
The fan icon on your oven indicates the air recirculation function. In this case, the oven uses top and bottom heat, but the heat is distributed more strongly inside by the fan. This allows you to set the oven thermostat 20 degrees lower than using the top and bottom heat icon. The temperature should be the same throughout, allowing multiple sheets to be placed in the oven at the same time. However, the air recirculation function dries out food, so it is not suitable for every cake, not all vegetables and certainly not for meat dishes. The oven does not need to be preheated when recirculating air. This saves energy.
Standard characters
Modern models of ovens can be very different - gas, electric, with or without a grill. In some of them, dishes can be placed on several floors at once, which significantly reduces cooking time and saves the housewife’s energy. To achieve the best possible results in creating culinary masterpieces, it is advisable to use different oven modes depending on the specific dish.
But when choosing one or another kitchen appliance, you should always remember that each manufacturer offers its own set of functions for the unit. But even with the same cooking options and hot air circulation inside the oven, the icons on the touch panel may appear different, which completely confuses customers.
Most of the companies, for example, Ariston (Ariston), Bosch (Bosch), Siemens (Siemens), Electrolux (Electrolux), Zanussi (Zanussi) decided to simplify the task of deciphering symbols on ovens for users and agreed on similar designations. We list the most standard and popular mode options:
Bulb | Turns on the backlight inside so you can monitor the degree of readiness of the products.
Snowflake by itself or with droplets | Indicates defrosting food.
Stripe on the bottom of the square | For cooking, only the lower heating element is used, that is, as was the case in the standard early models of all ovens.
Stripe on top | Indicates that the upper heating element is turned on.
Stripe on both sides | The simultaneous operation of two heating elements makes it possible to bake dishes more evenly and create a baked crust.
Dotted lines on the sensor | More often they say that cooking occurs at low temperatures (70-120°)
Convection mode | It is drawn in the form of a fan or 3-4 petals combined in the center - this means that all the hot air in the oven will circulate much faster than during natural processes, which will affect faster cooking of the dish, so it is often recommended to set the temperature a little lower in this mode, why it is needed for certain products
Wavy line on top | Grill function. Often combined with convection or other modes of heating food, it is often intended to create a beautiful crust on top of lasagna, meat dishes, pastries, julienne, etc.
Arrow in the middle with direction in both directions | Indicates the presence of a spit in the set, which, when used together with a grill, will create a uniform crust on any piece of meat, while the housewife does not need to perform any additional manipulations to turn it over.
Horizontal line and wavy streams of steam above it | Allows you to keep food warm for a long time, which is very convenient if you don’t know when to set the table.
A drawn pie with wavy lines rising above it | Designates the “Graten” mode, that is, it involves creating an appetizing crust on top of a casserole or any other dish.
Sun or vertical wavy lines without additional symbols | Talks about a drier cooking mode.
Clock with arrow | This means that for any chosen method of air circulation in the oven, you can specify the required time.
Bell | It helps to remember that you are preparing a dish, since at the end of baking the oven will definitely emit a loud signal. |
Some devices are equipped with an additional function for steaming food. Not all of them provide the ability to regulate the amount of steam and its heating intensity, but some models are designed specifically for this. So, the sign itself looks like three identical lines in a cloud. In this case, the maximum temperature of this mode is set. If there are only two strips or the signature “Med” is written, then we are talking about an average level of vaporization. “Low” with one dash indicates minimal heating.
You can often find several symbols in one square at once. This means that the equipment uses two air heating modes simultaneously. Sometimes this function is necessary for preparing special dishes. For example, if you need to create a golden crust at the end, then you should turn on the mode with the top strip and a zigzag line above it. In this case, the upper heating element and the grill will work simultaneously.
When two horizontal strips and a fan are combined, air heating from different sides is turned on immediately, as well as uniform convection throughout the entire area. This significantly speeds up the cooking process and does not require preheating it before putting it inside. This also indicates permission to cook on several tiers at the same time.
To understand all the intricacies of modern ovens, it is better to carefully study the instructions for the purchased model and keep the page with a decoding of the signs printed on the touch panel at hand. Over time, you will choose for yourself the best options for each dish, and you will no longer need hints.
Fan in quadrangle or circle: hot air
The oven uses hot air, which is heated in a radiator and then transported by a fan to the inside of the oven. The radiator in this sign is represented by a quadrangle or circle in which a fan is depicted. Hot air, distributed equally throughout, allows several trays to be baked at the same time. Preheating the oven is not required with the hot air function. This protects the environment and saves you money.

Types of Bosch ovens
On the domestic market of household appliances intended for cooking, Bosch offers several types of ovens: gas and electric models, compact and equipped with a microwave oven.
Gas models
