How to care for leather shoes and leatherette products

Shoes have long ceased to be a part of the wardrobe, which should only provide comfort when walking and protection from the cold. What we put on our feet demonstrates our wealth, standard of living and inner peace better than any clothing or accessories. But even the most expensive ones need to be properly looked after. If we neglect this, then a pair of once-chic leather shoes in a short time can turn a lovely princess into an unkempt Cinderella, and a handsome prince into a sloppy commoner.

Checklist for smooth skin care

Natural leather requires constant care. Before applying a new layer of cream, you need to clean the product from dirt and dust and open the pores.

The same principle as in caring for human facial skin. There is no point in applying cream to dirty skin with clogged pores.

Daily shoe care is as important as it is simple. It will keep your shoes in their original form for as long as possible.

When you get home, carefully inspect your shoes. If the shoes are wet, let the pair dry naturally

, away from heating devices, having previously removed the insoles.

Is it possible to dry shoes with newspaper?

It is difficult for newspaper to follow the shape of the foot, so the shoes may become deformed. Try to use special dryers

, which slightly heat the shoes, maintaining room temperature, which is safe for the skin.

Rules for caring for smooth leather shoes

Products made from smooth leather, at first glance, are easy to care for. At the same time, 2 times a month it is worth carrying out a complete treatment of smooth leather products:

  1. Shoes are cleaned of dirt.
  2. Residues of old products are removed using a special cleaner (in stores they are called shoe cleaners). This product is applied to a cotton pad and distributed evenly over the entire surface of the shoe. The remaining solution is removed with a brush with natural stiff bristles.
  3. In order to restore the elasticity of smooth skin, apply balm . It is distributed over the surface of shoes, boots or boots using a soft cloth.
  4. After 10 minutes apply a cream that best matches the shade of smooth leather shoes.
  5. Products are polished with a soft bristle brush . In this case, the surface of the shoe is carried out with sliding sharp movements in the direction back and forth.

Cleansing

Try to use dry cleaning foams for cleaning. If you wash shoes made of genuine leather “under the tap”, all the beneficial substances that maintain their elasticity will be washed away.

1.

Apply foam to the surface to be treated. Rub with a brush or cloth until the dirt and foam completely disappear.

2.

Remove dirty foam with a dry, clean cloth. Before the next step, the shoes must be completely dry (~30 minutes).

IMPORTANT:
Be sure to test all cleaners in a hidden area for the quality of the shoe dye.

Nutrition and color

Protection against drying out and premature hardening. Use creams based on natural ingredients: waxes, oils, fats. No silicone!

To add color, we recommend more often choosing creams with additional nutrition against cracking; aerosols are more suitable for express care for appearance. To achieve a natural shine, after applying the cream, polish the surface with a brush with natural bristles.

Professional patent leather shoe care products: a brief overview

The review presents products that have the highest consumer ratings according to review sites.

Polish for patent leather Saphir Vernis Rife

The French professional product Saphir Vernis Rife for adding a glossy shine and filling small scratches can return worn patent leather shoes to their flawless appearance. The polish also prevents deformation and cracks on the surface of the product. The approximate cost is from 815 to 870 rubles.

Polish for patent leather Saphir Vernis Rife is supplied by the manufacturer along with detailed instructions and a special napkin

Take precautions: use the product only in ventilated areas. Before cleaning shoes using Saphir Vernis Rife polish, remove children and animals from the room.

I have quite a lot of patent leather shoes and yesterday I saw that one pair of shoes (which had been stored in a box for a long time) became cloudy and covered with a white coating. And the skin has dried out a little. And I realized that I simply needed a product to care for patent leather shoes. As soon as I bought it, I immediately tried it out. The product is greasy, pleasant, with an unobtrusive smell. I applied it to my shoes, waited a few minutes until it was completely absorbed, and polished it off. The shoes cleaned up perfectly and looked like new! I really liked the product!

Aerosol Salamander

With the help of such a spray, intended for the care of patent leather, you can restore the color of shoes and create a thin protective film on its surface. Lack Care aerosol from Salamander allows you to quickly and effectively care for patent leather shoes at home. The cost of the product ranges from 399 to 456 rubles.

Aerosol for patent leather Salamander will protect shoes from the effects of slush, snow and reagents

A month ago, I ran out of Salamander “Leather Fresh” Aerosol for smooth leather (regular, not professional, bought a long time ago for 250 rubles), which I used to update the color and care for winter boots made of smooth leather. I was completely satisfied with its quality and inexpensive price. But unfortunately it ended. I had to look for something similar. The choice settled on Salamander Professional “Leather Fresh” aerosol for smooth skin 250 ml. True, this aerosol no longer cost 250 rubles, but as much as 430 rubles! What I got after using it... The spray does not fulfill the stated characteristics and makes the shoes simply look terrible. The shoes become matte and the product dries out in patches. I bought the product at the Riker shoe store and not somewhere on the market, the spray was still fresh.

As you can see from the photo, the boot has acquired an uneven texture, bruises and a matte finish.

Polish for patent leather shoes SALTON Professional

Delicate cream for the care of patent leather shoes SALTON Professional prevents deformation of the material and loss of shine. The product is neutral, so it is excellent for products of any shade, giving them a mirror gloss and maintaining elasticity. A special small sponge included in the kit will make it easier to care for your shoes at home. The cost of SALTON Professional cream is affordable and does not exceed 199 rubles.

SALTON Professional patent leather shoe polish contains a complex of special oils and natural beeswax

I tried different shoe polishes. Alas, I have not yet found one that would be as good as possible for me personally in all respects. About six months ago, I purchased Salton Professional Oil technology shoe polish. Since my shoes are mostly black, I chose black for the cream color, although the palette of this line has enough options to choose a color. Volume - 75 ml. It is quite soft and flexible, which will allow you to squeeze out the maximum product from it. The tube also has a special sponge, thanks to which it is possible to distribute the cream over the surface of the shoe. It is too hard, in my opinion, for it to be possible to simultaneously polish the shoes while distributing the cream.

Lack Polish cream to protect shoes from the negative influence of external factors

Professional Lack Polish from Salamander is suitable for caring for the most capricious patent leather. The cream is produced by the manufacturer in two versions: neutral and black. The product contains silicone, which creates a dense barrier on the surface of the shoe to moisture and particles of street dirt. Its cost is quite affordable; the cream is sold at prices ranging from 121 to 134 rubles.

Lack Polish cream from Salamander gives patent leather a mirror shine

I love this product. It perfectly copes with the main problems of patent leather shoes: loss of gloss, cracks and decreased elasticity. In addition, it protects shoes very well from moisture and street dirt. One day, Lack Polish from Salamander simply saved my new ankle boots. Instead of an unexpectedly ill employee, I had to visit a work site, and the weather was not at all conducive to walking in patent leather shoes. Autumn slush, rain, construction debris lying everywhere you look. The ankle boots survived, which I attribute solely to the use of Salamander cream. The product is sold in a small tube, but it lasts a long time, and the cost is ridiculous compared to some shoe accessories.

Shoe wax Twist Casual Care

A professional product with a high content of natural beeswax, it is intended for the care of smooth leather, including patent leather. The substance, thick and dense in appearance, has a high distribution coefficient, so it is quickly and easily applied to the surface of the shoe. Twist Casual Care Wax is neutral in color and provides excellent water-repellent protection. The average cost of the product ranges from 55 to 72 rubles.

Shoe wax from the Twist Casual Care series reliably protects shoes from getting wet and salt stains, and also provides intensive care.

My parents taught me to take care of my shoes as a child, and now, as an adult, I take responsibility for the appearance of my shoes, especially since seasonal shoes are now quite expensive and, having bought them, I want them to last longer. In addition to various shoe care products, I also use Twist shoe wax. After drying and cleaning the shoes, I always treat the seams and the leather of the boot or boot with wax; it is colorless and matches any shoe color. It contains beeswax and golden amber oils, paraffin, lanolin and mink oil, which not only creates a protective film on shoes, but also nourishes and softens them. After applying the wax, I let it dry a little for about 10 minutes and quickly scrub it with sandpaper. A little time and snow and slush are no longer scary. The wax is of good quality, so I recommend it with a clear conscience.

Protection from water, dirt and reagents

Shoes must be protected from moisture, dirt and reagents. Today, manufacturers offer different types: nano-impregnations, impregnations with fluorocarbon resins or water-based ones. When choosing an impregnation, rely on versatility and the absence of silicone.

Nano-impregnations are applied as the top layer (after the cream), and fluorine cardboard works with pores, so this impregnation must be applied as the first layer (before the cream).

Always treat new shoes with cream and impregnation; you don’t know how the product was stored and transported!

We wrote earlier how to choose the right impregnation for shoes and how they differ.

How to store smooth leather shoes

Where and how to store shoes:

1. Store at room temperature in a closet or dressing room.

2. Use spacious cardboard boxes.

3. Clean, dry and treat the steam with nutrients before packaging.

What not to do:

  • You cannot store shoes on the balcony at temperatures below 0.
  • Do not store shoes in plastic bags without air circulation.
  • Leather boots should not be bent: deformation and kinks will ruin the appearance forever. Leather is a very delicate material.

How to prepare shoes for long-term storage:

1. To prevent shoes from losing their shape during storage, we insert mold holders.

2. Clean the steam from dirt, reagents, and remnants of old cream.

3. Nourish smooth skin with lotion or cream. From the Tarrago line, a gentle balm, Leather Care Balm, is suitable.

Proper care

In order for shoes covered with a varnish layer to last for several years without spoiling their appearance, they need to be cleaned after each wear, even if they look clean. After all, fine dust and dirt particles worsen the quality and appearance of the varnish layer, which means that in the absence of cleaning, the shoes will gradually age and the appearance will deteriorate.

How to care for patent leather shoes:

  • Using a cloth or brush with soft, long bristles, thoroughly clean the remaining sand, clay and dirt from the surface of the boots (this must be done with gentle movements so that small particles do not scratch the top layer);
  • Use a dry cloth to wipe the varnished surface clean so that there are no streaks left on it (special attention must be paid to folds and seams, carefully removing dust from them);
  • It is prohibited to clean shoes from dirt with coarse-bristled shoe brushes - such a device will clean suede or natural leather well, but not varnish (otherwise the shoes will be covered with scratches that cannot be removed with modern shoe products).

When the shoes are completely cleaned and there are no streaks left on their surface, you can apply a special cream designed to care for seasonal shoes, which often have to deal with dirt. Such compositions will carefully polish the material, giving it a soft shine and additional protective qualities.

If such a cream is not available, polishing can be done with folk remedies.

For example, care for patent leather shoes is carried out with milk with a high percentage of fat content. Apply milk to a napkin, wipe the varnish coating with it, and then polish the shoes with a soft cloth. The process can be completed when there are no traces of moisture on the surface.

You can also wipe the surface with a small piece of onion - the vegetable will add shine to the varnished coating and also protect it from external negative influences.

If shoes get wet while walking outside or carelessly washed, it is important to remember that they should not be dried on a radiator or heater. In this case, you need to turn to the old method - stuff newspaper into your shoes and put them in a warm place.
