How to change the tongue on the slider. A broken slider tongue can simply be replaced by installing a new one. If...: mettiss - LiveJournal. How to avoid zipper breakdowns for longer

Causes of lock malfunction

If a problem arises with the dog, also called a slider or slider, you should not immediately resort to the help of repair shops. This problem can be solved independently at home. First you need to figure out what is wrong with the fastener. Depending on this, further steps need to be taken. The main reasons why it may break:

In this case, you need to repair the pawl or replace it with another copy purchased in accordance with the desired type of zipper. When the teeth of the fastener are not damaged, this will be the best solution, since there is no need to replace the whole thing. The clasp is replaced with a new one if the teeth are partially torn out.

The zipper comes undone

Unfastened zippers are a common problem for trouser owners. This is not only inconvenient, but can also lead to awkward situations. Unfortunately, you will not be able to solve this problem permanently until you completely replace the zipper.

However, there are two temporary hacks. The easiest way is to thread the key ring through the dog and put it on the button of your jeans or trousers. This mechanism will simply hold the zipper. Instead of a ring, you can use an elastic band for bills or hair.

Types of lightning

Such fasteners, also called snakes, are divided into single-sided and double-sided. The second type is one of the most practical types of fasteners and is used on jackets, down jackets, and coats. Depending on the material of the teeth, snakes can be metal, plastic (tractor) or twisted.

These fasteners may also differ in length and tooth sizes. The teeth are small, medium and large. This is determined by the type of clothing where such a fastener is inserted.

Dogs on snakes differ in the material they are made of. They are made of metal and plastic. Plastic dogs are simple and easy to use. Metal sliders (dogs) are more reliable and durable and are used more often.

If the carbine is broken and needs to be replaced

  • Twisted
    (oval runners are used here),
  • Tractor
    (the teeth are usually made of plastic, and the dog itself is oval or trefoil-shaped),
  • Metal
    (the slider is usually triangular in shape).

  • To get started, arm yourself with an awl, scissors and pliers/pliers.
  • Remove or cut the stoppers from the zipper (metal ones can be removed, but plastic ones are easier to trim carefully).
  • Put the purchased slider on the zipper and check if it works well.
  • If everything is fine, put on the stoppers and tighten them carefully.
  • That's it, the updated zipper is ready, you can use the bag again.

Types and designations of dogs

To correctly cope with the task of inserting a pawl into a zipper on a jacket, bag, boots, you need to know what types of sliders there are. The following types are produced:

And you also need to pay attention to the digital designations stamped on the dogs, according to their size, on the reverse side:

  • for metal fasteners, triangular runners on the reverse side have numbers - 3, 5, 8, 10;
  • Tractor zippers are suitable for pawls, oval or trefoil-shaped on the reverse side and No. 3, 5, 7, 8, 10;
  • For twisted fasteners, sliders in the shape of an elongated oval with numbers: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 are suitable.

In addition to the number designations, there are letter designations on the reverse side of the pawls:

Using pliers

The easiest and fastest way to solve the problem if the zipper on your jacket comes apart:

  1. Lay out the product with the “snake” on a flat surface, straighten the sides of the fastener.
  2. Place one of its ends inside the slider and press with pliers.
  3. Now evaluate the result: try to pull the slider in the up and down direction.
  4. If the zipper is fastened, you can put the thing on and forget about a little trouble.
  5. If the lock comes apart, place the slider in the pliers so that the outer and inner halves are inside the tool.
  6. Pull the pliers and slider a few more centimeters. The clasp will snap into place immediately.

What is required for replacement

If you know how to insert the pawl into the zipper on your jacket, you can avoid the inconvenience caused by a faulty zipper. This kind of work can be done quite quickly at home. To do this you need to have:

  • a slider similar to the previous (faulty) product;
  • small scissors, blade;
  • needle and thread;
  • pliers, pliers or side cutters;
  • knife (screwdriver);
  • glue "Moment".

When the cause of the snake malfunction is determined, you can proceed to replacing the slider.

In the case when the reason is not in the pawl, but in the teeth of the snake, then you should move the lock located at the bottom a little higher. For example, you can try to do this on a trouser zipper if several teeth are missing on it or when, due to their damage, the fly cannot be fastened.

Problem 3 – the edge of the zipper is frayed

Sometimes such a nuisance as a frayed edge of a zipper happens. And the problem is not only that it looks unaesthetic. In such a situation, fastening the zipper becomes more and more difficult every day. And if measures are not taken in time, the fastener will have to be completely replaced. And the solution is quite simple. As soon as you notice that the fabric at the edge of the zipper has begun to fray, carefully coat this area with epoxy glue. When the glue is completely dry, it will toughen the fabric and prevent it from further deterioration.

Replacing the slider

After preparing all the materials for replacing the mechanism on the snake, they move on to the work itself.

It should be noted that even if the slider that flew off the snake remains in good condition, compression during repair can cause it to break after some time.

When replacing a slider, the sequence of actions is as follows:

This operating procedure is suitable for detachable types of fasteners on dressing gowns and jackets. It is also used to change the runner of shoes and boots. When the zipper on trousers or skirt is faulty, the work becomes somewhat more complicated.

Sometimes the pawl is changed on the snake without removing the lock. For this purpose, in order to install a new lock, one of its edges is opened slightly with a knife or screwdriver in order to more conveniently put the mechanism on the zipper teeth. Use pliers to press the edge that is open. This option of installing a new slider takes less time than removing the lock, but the work of opening the edge of the lock must be done carefully so as not to bend the slider. Otherwise you will need another dog. You should also carefully press it onto the teeth of the snake so that it works well and does not break during installation.

When the pawl on a trouser fastener breaks, you can replace it with minimal time. Before removing the zipper catch and stopper, you should first of all undo the zipper where it is hemmed to the clothing. This operation is performed using a blade or small sharp scissors. After installing the new runner and limiter, the end of the snake is sewn back.

Sometimes you just use scissors to make a small cut on each side of the zipper rail near the base. Then insert a working pawl and push it up. The cut areas must be sewn up (glued) below the level of the runner in order for the fastener to work.

In the event that the pawl has jumped out from one side of the fastener, then only one cut is made between the two rails. This option is suitable for dogs that have fallen off plastic fasteners. The metal fasteners are either changed or the fabric is ripped out and the runner is put on from below.

If the limiter is broken, it is easy to make it yourself using a needle and thread. In the place where the latch should be, stitches are made in such a quantity that will prevent the lock from flying off the snake. Similarly, repairs of fasteners with slider inserts on zippers of bags are carried out.

How to quickly repair a metal zipper if it comes apart or the slider has fallen off?

A metal zipper is considered the most reliable and durable, since its teeth (brass or nickel) are located on a fairly dense material and are connected to each other especially firmly.

However, it also has a number of disadvantages:

  • scratches fingers
  • The slider often jams
  • teeth cling to fabric threads

In order to repair a broken fastener, you first need to determine the cause of the breakdown. In the case where the slider is to blame, you can make a quick repair like this:

  • prepare thin pliers (pliers) or non-sharp tongs
  • carefully examine the slider to determine the location of voids and partitions inside it
  • Using pliers, carefully press both sides of the pawl onto the fastener links
  • do it from top and bottom
  • fasten the zipper
  • squeeze the base of the slider slightly towards the center
  • do not overdo it, press lightly so as not to break the lock or make it too tight

Sometimes a metal zipper begins to diverge due to deformation of the links. At the initial stage, it is easy to correct the situation:

  • lay the item on a hard surface
  • lightly tap along the entire length with a hammer
  • do this from the outside and inside
  • walk this way several times

If the “snake” diverges in only one place, this means that the teeth in this area are especially damaged. You can fix it like this:

  • fasten the zipper
  • in the area where the links diverge, connect them with your hands
  • Using light pressure with pliers, align the problematic teeth

In the event that the links are damaged or missing at the bottom of the “snake”, you can proceed as follows:

Read also: Personal life of Dmitry Nagiyev

  • on a permanent one, make a few stitches over the missing teeth. In this case, the fastener will only unfasten to this sewn area. Check whether this length is enough for you to use comfortably.
  • on a detachable one - change the lower limiter on which the slider rests. To do this, remove it, helping yourself with pliers. Replace it with a stopper that is larger in size. It will cover the hole from the missing link.

Sometimes the dog flies off the zipper and it becomes impossible to use the item. This problem is also completely fixable.

When the slider has completely fallen off:

  • slightly support the seam with which the fastener is sewn to the product
  • pull out the ends on one side
  • Using tweezers, an awl or small scissors, open the clamps at the top or bottom of the zipper (whichever is more convenient) and remove them from the fabric base
  • pass the ends of the ribbon inside the runner
  • push it a little along the zipper
  • put the latches back in their original place

When the slider has flown off only one side:

  • from the edge that is not attached to the tape, slightly open the slider with tongs to increase the gap between its walls
  • lower it down
  • carefully insert the teeth of the fastener into the slider
  • make sure that they are positioned evenly, without tension or bending
  • lightly press the edges of the slider
  • in the case when it is impossible to unclench the walls of the “dog”:
  • remove the stopper on one side of the fastener
  • put on the doggie
  • put the limiter back

If the slider is broken and cannot be replaced, it must be replaced. When purchasing a new one, keep in mind that its shape and size must match the configuration of the fastener. On the reverse side of the “dog” the dimensions are indicated in millimeters. If the lock is lost, it is better to take the zipper with you to the store to avoid making the wrong purchase.

Please note that inserting the slider onto the “snake” will be much easier if you lubricate it first:

Lock and different types of zippers

Very often, snake fasteners are used when sewing jackets, raincoats, and other outerwear.

Metal split clasp

To know how to change the slider on a jacket that has a detachable metal snake, proceed as follows:

Before inserting the lock into the zipper, there should be no limiter on it. When it comes to removing a limiter, you first need to determine its type. It can be soldered or secured. The plastic stopper can only be removed once. The limiter is often made in the form of a metal bracket. It prevents the slider from slipping off the fastener tape. To put the slider in place, it is slightly unclenched. After installing it in place, it should be tightened. Then you need to insert the second part of the snake into the slider and check how it closes the teeth. After this, insert the limiter and tighten it with pliers.

The teeth in tractor plastic zippers are lubricated with dry soap to make the slider move more easily.

Twisted lightning

You should also learn how to insert the pawl into a twisted zipper. It differs favorably from others in that the slider on it can slide in any direction when fastening, and does not move only up or down. In this snake, you can install another dog instead of a limiter. Each of them will move freely in one direction or the other. Otherwise, the algorithm for replacing the slider is similar to the previous option.

One-piece zipper

The process of inserting a pawl into a one-piece zipper is similar to replacing the slider in other types of zippers. Such zippers can be found on bags, dresses, secret pockets, and covers. At first it seems that such a fastener cannot be repaired, so many people simply replace the zipper. This is wrong. However, in this case, you will need a sewing machine for the job. It is necessary to release the edges of the textile material. They will be inserted into the pawl. If the fastener is attached using stitches made by hand, then the item will have an unkempt appearance. The slider should be moved along the snake smoothly.

Sometimes you need to align the cloves so that they do not diverge. If the teeth are metal, they are pressed with pliers. This will help them grip the fabric better. When the teeth are plastic, even if the slider is replaced, the lock will not last long. If the teeth diverge or break, the lock should be replaced with a new one.

Having obtained certain knowledge on how to replace the zipper slider of a jacket, trousers, bags, you can put it into practice and make sure that it is easy to repair a zipper by replacing the zipper with your own hands.

Attention, TODAY only!

It's very disappointing to put something on and find that the lock is broken. Change clothes and take the item to the studio? But changing the lock is not cheap. In most cases, it is enough to replace the pawl and wear the item again. But not everyone knows how to quickly fix a zipper pull. To change the slider, you need to know what types of sliders there are and what to do if they break.

Why the zipper on a jacket diverges or does not fasten: the main reasons

A lock can fail for a variety of reasons:

  • Inaccurate use, constant haste and tugging with force. When used in this way, a high coefficient of friction occurs between the fastener elements. As a result, the runner becomes loose, its runners stop fastening, and the teeth are pulled out.
  • Improper storage of outerwear folded during the warm season. This may cause the zipper to bend.
  • With active and prolonged use, the lock parts simply wear out.
  • Weather conditions, precipitation in the form of snow and rain are an additional load that requires special lightning endurance.
  • Poor quality fittings. The lower fasteners fray and fray because they are not glued. In such a situation, it becomes difficult to insert one part of the lock into another.

Outerwear is usually bought not for one season, but for at least two to three years. Therefore, a breakdown of a zipper in the first month of its use causes the owner a lot of inconvenience, unnecessary trouble and expenses for repairs. To prevent this from happening, you need to carefully choose the manufacturer's brand.

Jackets, down jackets and ski suits from the Russian brand Stayer will protect you from frost, wind and any precipitation. When sewing them, only high-quality metal fittings are used, which will last for many years. All zippers are taped. This factor eliminates the possibility of “delamination” of its lower part. Over the entire period of operation, owners of outerwear of the Stayer brand simply will not have the question of what to do if the lock on a down jacket or vest breaks? Such situations have never happened before.

Zip slider

How to change a broken zipper? First you need to decide on the type of breakdown.

If the teeth on the zipper have crumbled, then the lock itself needs to be changed completely. The pawl is changed when, when fastening or unfastening the fastener, it diverges or jams.

When do you have to think about how to replace a zipper dog?

  1. The type of fastener does not suit the item - the textile tape is too thin for this product. When loaded, even if it was prolonged, the cheeks of the slider move apart. It is impossible to constantly press them with pliers - they will break. Breakdowns occur especially often if the slider is made of plastic;
  2. When the runner wears out, cracks form on its bridge. In this case, it becomes damaged and needs to be replaced.

Based on the material from which the teeth are made, fasteners can be divided into the following types:

  • tractor - most often the teeth are made of plastic;
  • metal;
  • twisted

It is impossible to solve the problem of how to make a zipper if the lock does not fit under it. Sliders come in different sizes; most often they are placed on the back of the clamp. For metal ones, sizes vary from 3 to 10 or more. On the reverse side, the slider is shaped like a triangle.

The reverse side of the tractor zipper slider has the shape of a trefoil or an oval, and is designated No. 3 onwards. For twisted lightning, the slider shape is only oval, numbers from 3 onwards.

The letter designations that are stamped next to the numbers indicate the following:

  • X – one-piece zipper, cast, 2 locks;
  • L – the clasp does not open, lock 1;
  • N – one-piece zipper, lock 2;
  • D – the clasp opens completely, 2 locks with 2 connectors;
  • A – lock without connector;
  • B – connector with 1 lock;
  • C – connector, 2 locks.

To cope with the task of how to quickly fix a zipper pull, you also need to know the types of sliders:

Replacing zipper sliders of different types

In order not to be distracted from work, you should prepare in advance:

  • pliers or pliers;
  • screwdriver;
  • nail scissors;
  • threads;
  • a needle;
  • new slider.

Sometimes, in addition to the dog, you may need to purchase a limiter and add universal glue to the necessary materials.

How to put a pawl on a metal detachable zipper:

  1. First you need to remove the limiter on one side. To do this, you need to bite it off with a side cutter. If the stopper comes into contact with the fabric, you need to carefully pry it off with a screwdriver or nail scissors;
  2. The same scissors are used to make a cut, cutting the thickening of the lock braid. This must be done in order to remove the old slider and put on the new one freely. The slider needs to be slightly rocked if it is tight. It is advisable to coat the teeth with oil. It is undesirable to apply force - you can damage the teeth or the new fastener;
  3. To insert the slider, you need to hold it at a slight angle;
  4. Both halves of the zipper are connected, inserted into the slider, and checked how it works;
  5. Using a buttonhole stitch - also called an overcast stitch - the edges of the cut are tightened.

How to put a pawl on a tractor zipper:

  • First you need to look at the type of limiter. Is it soldered, or simply fixed. The plastic stopper can only be removed once. Only with the stopper removed can you solve the problem of how to remove a broken pawl from a zipper;
  • In order for the slider to fall into place, it needs to be slightly unclenched. After installation, it is tightened;
  • Thread the second half of the lock into the slider, check how it closes the teeth, then install the limiter, pressing it with pliers.

To make the dog move easier, the teeth of plastic tractor zippers are lubricated with dry soap.

How to put a dog on a twisted zipper?

The algorithm is no different from the options already proposed.

But the screw fastener has some advantage over other types of fasteners - it does not have a specific direction for fastening. Instead of a limiter, you can install 2 sliders that can move freely in both directions.

Nuances of the technical process

How to insert a pawl into a one-piece zipper? The technology is the same, but without a sewing machine it will be impossible to repair the item.

How to replace the zipper slider and pawl manually. Classification of zipper sliders.

You fasten your jacket, the zipper comes unfastened, or the slider (slider) jams when fastening (unzipping), which means it’s time to replace it. Zippers vary in tooth material: - Metal - Plastic - tractor - twisted Zippers vary in size and each size has its own slider with a digital designation on the reverse side. For metal zippers No. 3, 5, 8, 10, the reverse side has a characteristic triangular shape. For tractor zippers Nos. 3, 5,7, 8, 10 On the reverse side it has an oval or trefoil shape For twisted zippers Nos. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10

The slider has the shape of an elongated oval. In addition to digital designations, sometimes there are also alphabetic ones. Here are some of the letter indices printed on the back of the sliders. A - one-piece zipper. B — detachable zipper with 1 lock. C - detachable zipper with 2 locks. D – detachable zipper with 2 locks and 2 connectors. H – one-piece zipper with 2 locks. L - One-piece clasp with 1 lock. X - one-piece cast zipper with 2 locks. This information is necessary only for lightning manufacturers. It does not affect the replacement of sliders - runners, since the sizes of the zipper links are standard. Types of sliders: automatic - inside the slider (runner) there is a mechanism that secures the teeth of the zipper and does not allow it to diverge at any position of the tongue (puller); - semi-automatic - zippers with a stopper, which secures the teeth and does not allow the zipper to diverge only when the puller is lowered - haberdashery - a slider without an automatic mechanism and a stopper, free movement along the zipper without fastening. Mainly used in roll zippers and bag zippers

Reasons for slider failure:

Long-term load causes the cheeks of the slider to move apart. And as a result, microcracks form on the slider bridge. Therefore, pressing the cheeks of the slider brings only a temporary effect; after a short period of time, the slider - the slider will simply fall apart. Another reason is wear of the slider jumper due to friction against the teeth of the zipper, both on metal and plastic zippers. As a result, when fastening, the zipper teeth are not fixed and diverge. The slider needs to be replaced.

Replacing a slider on a detachable metal zipper:

(for all types of metal zippers 3, 5, 8, 10) First of all, remove the stopper (usually on the right side of the zipper) using a side cutter, without damaging the zipper tape. If the limiter is clamped too tightly, then pry it off with a thin screwdriver. Often zippers are sewn in such a way that the zipper tape is bent at an angle. After removing the upper limiter, try putting on the slider; if it does not fit freely, then you need to make a cut with the tips of scissors, cut the thickening of the zipper tape. Then we put on the slider at a slight angle (in no case should you apply a lot of force, so as not to damage the slider or zipper teeth). If it is slow, you should slightly shake the slider. We connect both halves of the zipper and check how the slider fastens the zipper. Using two stitches of thread, we tighten the edges of the cut, or we put a limiter on the cut.

Replacing a slider on a tractor (cast) detachable zipper:

(for all types of zippers 3, 5, 8, 10) How to insert the slider into a tractor zipper if the limiter is soldered in plastic? As a rule, on zippers of this type the upper limiter is plastic; there are several varieties. This type of restrictor will have to be removed and cannot be reinstalled once removed. And this type of limiter does not have to be removed; more often it plays a decorative role; the slider can be easily removed and reinstalled. (Before removing the top stop, carefully inspect the zipper) Replacing the slider (slider) is done in the same way as on a metal zipper.

Replacing a slider on a twisted (spiral) detachable zipper:

(by the way, sliders - sliders on twisted lightning are less likely to fail). The technique for replacing the slider/runner is described above; you won’t add anything new. The exception is the upper limiter, which looks like this:

It is most convenient to remove this limiter with a screwdriver with a thin blade. From the beginning we bend the antennae of the limiter, and pry it from the reverse side with a screwdriver. Removable without damaging the zipper spiral and tape. Reinstalling the top stop requires patience and time. If you don’t have either one or the other, it’s easier to use a flat clamp stop – your own or a store-bought one. The upper limiter can be made independently from aluminum wire (it is easier to work with). Flatten it on an anvil (on any flat metal plate). Cut it into 8-10mm pieces using side cutters or pliers, sharpen the ends with a file or needle file. Bend the stopper with pliers and secure it to the zipper. A little more effort and the limiter will be like a real one. -When installing sliders on two-sided zippers, sliders - sliders should be installed in different directions of movement.

Recently, zippers with upper limiters made of sealed plastic have appeared. Removing them is somewhat more difficult; you have to partially cut them off with a knife (clerical knife), then metal stops are installed in their place.

The zipper is a very popular type of fastener. Sometimes it happens when this device fails due to breakage or disconnection of the pawl. In most cases, people turn to a locksmith to repair or replace a lock. However, you can restore the integrity of the fastener yourself.

Zipper repair

Lightning has become an integral part of many things from our wardrobe. Thin and thick, long and short, with metal and plastic teeth. We use zippers on clothes of all seasons.

The zipper is a popular fastener, especially the detachable one: it’s convenient, but unfortunately, sometimes it breaks.

If a button comes off, you can simply sew it back in place and continue wearing the item. How to fix a zipper? Of course, you can take the spoiled item to the studio. If you want to save money, you can try to fix the zipper at home with your own hands.

And today we will talk about repairing a detachable zipper. And about a fairly common case when the plug-in tip of the left part of the fastener has become “frayed”.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to repair a zipper with your own hands, and replacing the slider or, as they also say, “dogs” will not help, and it is usually recommended to change the zipper completely.

What to do if you don’t want to change the lock, yes, sometimes it’s not so easy (it can be sewn very awkwardly), but you want to wear a jacket with a zipper. I found a very interesting method on the Internet. So, you don’t want to sew up the lock at the base and don’t want (or are unable) to replace it. Well, then let’s fix it: First, we need a piece of iron, from which we will make the part we need. We also need superglue and a paper clip. (superglue is one that hardens very quickly and becomes “like glass”, very hard, based on cyacrolate, sold in small tubes of 1-2 grams).

So, we remove all excess, after soaking the fabric with superglue. It will set quickly and add rigidity. Carefully cut with pliers. (photo 1). Now comes the main part. We cut it to size from a piece of stainless steel or tinned tin (you can take it from a condensed milk can) and roll it up as shown in photo 2.

It should fit well into the part of the lock that moves and be well fixed in the part that is located below (photo 3). Next we manage to fasten the lock (photo 4). This can be done by hand connecting each clove in sequence.

Surely, everyone did this when they were trying to understand how this thing works or when lightning moved in the middle.

After this, we place our piece of iron on the inside of the lock and place it on superglue (photos 5 and 6). We try to unfasten it. If you did everything well, then the lock should unfasten, although at first, until the piece of hardware gets used, this can be done with some effort. Take your time, because... the glue may not have time to set completely. So, you unfastened the lock. Everything works, but it's not enough.

Now we need to strengthen our structure. We drill 2 small holes and insert a bracket made from a regular paper clip (photo 7, 8,).

That's it now! (photo 9, 10). We finally check the operation of our lightning. For a better look, you can touch up the sizing areas with a permanent marker. For good performance, I recommend rubbing the lock with paraffin or stearin (a regular candle) or just soap. Some useful tips related to zippers

* If the zipper lock is a little tight, rub it with a stearin candle. This advice is especially effective for metal zippers. The lead of a soft pencil will also help. It is enough to pass it along the zipper several times.

* If the zipper often spontaneously diverges in the middle, lightly tap the lock (its edges, and not the bracket to which the tongue is attached) with a small hammer. Tapping the zipper itself, if it is metal, will also help. The lock will become tighter, but the zipper will stop moving apart. * If the zipper tab comes off, it can be replaced with a regular paper clip.

* Zippers on shoes suffer greatly from dampness, wet and salty snow, and slush. Which dramatically reduces their service life. Rub a piece of unsalted lard over them or use a special hydrophobic lubricant more often. And the lightning will be protected from dampness. Such lubrication will also improve its performance. Source: Ivan Razin, DelaySam.ru.

* What to do if the zipper on jeans or trousers unzips itself? There are a couple of very simple solutions... So, you have a problem with a zipper that comes apart or comes undone on your fly. Most often, the zipper unfastens on its own on trousers after you sit down and stand up. Such a zipper should be repaired so as not to end up in an uncomfortable situation.

To do this, you need to take the ring from the keychain.

Place this ring on the slider together with the tongue or on it. After you fasten the zipper, put this ring on the button of the trouser belt, and the zipper will not unfasten on its own.

A great way to tame a zipper that keeps coming undone is to make a loop of thread that is tied to the zipper pull. After this, having fastened the lock, you can put a loop on the button, which will not allow the zipper to diverge.

Or take a piece of lace, pull it through the hole in the slider and tie it. Throw a loop over the button and thus the zipper will no longer come undone

How to fix a zipper

Zipper Repair: Slider Pull

I don’t know, maybe it’s only in our family that zipper pulls break, and CONSTANTLY on bags, trousers or shoes.

I consider it inappropriate to change such a zipper, because... The zipper itself is intact, the slider is also fine, but there is nothing to pull.

It is just as inconvenient to walk with partially broken tabs as without any tabs at all; children constantly prick their fingers with them, and fastening/unfastening such a zipper becomes quite problematic and takes a long time (((. Here is one of the options for this broken disgrace on my daughter’s sports backpack:

Temporarily, until you have the opportunity to change the fastener yourself, you can try replacing the tab with a regular paper clip.

In my opinion, such a “tab” is inconvenient - there is a sharp part in the paper clip, the paper clip itself is a bit short, and the look is still the same) I propose another way to “repair” the tongue, I’ll immediately make a reservation that in this way (including using a paper clip ) not all zippers can be repaired, but only those that have a hole for attaching this very tongue. We will need: a cord of suitable color and length, side cutters, a lighter and decor of your choice)

Using tongs, remove the remnants of the tongue, insert a lace of the required length in their place, use a lighter to set the lace on fire, tie a knot to secure the lace and decorate it to your liking. Here's what I got from what I had in stock:

And this is a repair from the same series :o) Source I. Of course, the laces don’t have to be decorated at all, but you can put a plastic tube on this loop of laces for convenience

Don’t be upset if you suddenly lose the zipper pull on your bag while on the road. A simple way out is to attach a small ring taken from the keychain to the lock. It should be inserted into the ear of the lock - and you can continue to use your favorite bag.

Zipper Repair: Teeth Have the teeth on your zipper fallen out and you don't know what to do with it?

If the item can still serve, then you need to start repairing it. I suggest you familiarize yourself with interesting methods for repairing a zipper.

It is very unpleasant when one tooth in a zipper breaks. Let's try to fix it...

We will need a cotton swab, needles and thread. It is necessary to carefully remove the locking mechanism (slider) from the fastener.

If this is not possible, then simply move the lock further away from the accident site. Take a cotton swab, cut off a part of the stem 2.5 mm long from the stick, cut it along the entire length

We put plastic (from a cotton swab) in place of the broken clove

To restore the movement of the slider, you need to create the effect of the presence of all the teeth, which is what we did. We secure our new tooth with a needle and thread, stitching through the plastic

Check how the lock works. If it easily passes along the zipper, then you can then secure the structure (plastic + threads) using super glue and let it dry.

Consider a case where several teeth flew out of a zipper. Usually in such cases you can simply replace the zipper, since nowadays there is no particular shortage of fittings. But if it’s difficult to do it yourself, and it’s expensive to take the item to a workshop, we’ll try to repair the zipper with our own hands.

To do this, you will need to purchase a small donor zipper (of the required size of teeth - suitable not only in height and width, but also in thickness). We pick out the teeth from the “donor” - they are slightly glued/welded there, but can be removed quite easily

To place the tooth on the zipper, use a strip of copper foil (#0.1mm)

Open the legs of the clove with an awl and place them on the foil. Then simply slide the clove from the foil onto the fabric. To secure the teeth, sew several stitches between them with a relatively thick thread - back and forth.

That's all, actually. The lock works fine! SourceIf one or two teeth have fallen out of a nylon zipper, you can restore its functionality using a bandage by stitching the damaged area with fishing line turn to turn..

In the missing area, sew the missing teeth with fishing line, threading the needle into the same place several times in a row until the necessary parts are formed.

If the tips for correcting the zipper did not help you, then you should contact the nearest workshop, where they will replace the old fastener with a new one.

Helpful Tips:

If the metal zipper comes apart, don't rush to replace it. It is necessary to forge it along the entire length from the inside and outside with gentle blows of a hammer, making 2-3 passes. Then slightly reduce the gap between the top and bottom of the lock. This must be done carefully so as not to break the lock.

The zipper will last much longer if its textile part is impregnated with BF-6 glue. In the same way, you can repair an already worn zipper.

To make the work of a metal zipper easier, sometimes it is enough to simply run the lead of a soft pencil over it several times - the graphite will act well as a lubricant.

The zipper sometimes has to be cut off. To prevent the slider from bouncing after this, you can use a paper clip from a school notebook as a travel limiter.

To prevent the zipper on winter boots from coming undone, we recommend securing the zipper tongue with a small hook. The hook (from a dress, skirt) needs to be slightly bent and sewn to the side of the lock track.

Plastic zippers on shoes sometimes begin to come apart on their own. To restore their functionality, we recommend doing this: unzip the zipper, moisten its teeth with a solution of rosin in alcohol (soldering flux) and let it dry for two hours. The clasp will work reliably. Over time, the operation can be repeated.

We offer a method for fastening the teeth of a plastic zipper that have come off the fabric base. To do this, using a needle and nylon thread, each tooth is sewn to the base.

If the zipper comes off the fabric base, it can be sewn on using a machine needle. This method is especially convenient for repairing hard-to-reach places, such as shoes, since the needle punctures only on one side.

How to change the zipper dog?

If it is not possible to repair the dog, it must be replaced. First of all, you will have to purchase a new slider. It must match the type of zipper.

When choosing a slider, pay attention to the name and number. The pawls vary depending on the type of zippers: metal, plastic (tractor) and twisted.

To replace a broken pawl, you need to equip yourself with the following tools: pliers, thread and needle. Even if the ejected slider remains intact, it is preferable to purchase another one, since its repeated compression during repair can lead to failure in the near future. You will learn how to change the pawl on a detachable zipper by reading the instructions:

  1. Place a new pawl on the side of the zipper where the socket and detachable stopper are located.
  2. If the stopper at the top of the lock has come off, correct it using pliers. A loose stopper can be replaced by securing it with several stitches using a needle and thread.

One-piece zippers are commonly found on dresses, bags, briefcases, secret pockets and cases. At first glance, it is impossible to repair such a fastener, so many are forced to completely replace it. In fact, this is not true. It's easy to change even a small slider. Here's how to put a zipper dog on without a connector:

  1. Slightly separate the ends of the rails and insert them into the pawl at their respective ends.
  2. Move the slider down.
  3. Press the slots on the slider using pliers to the desired hole size.

Note! If the dog will not budge, straighten the slots on it. To avoid breaking the rails, control the pressure force

.

If there is a problem with the zipper

If you have problems with a zipper on your clothes or shoes, do not immediately rush to a shoe repair shop or service. You can do this yourself at home if you have a few minutes of free time and the desire to perform such an action.

First, you need to determine the root of the problem. Why does the zipper come apart or the zipper not fasten? This is very important, further actions depend on it. Let's look at the main problems that can arise with these types of fasteners.

  1. Lightning disperses.
  2. The dog flew off the battlements.
  3. In a certain place, the pawl does not fasten the zipper, but is simply removed from one side.
  4. When fastened, the pawl does not lock, but flies off the lock.

If the zipper teeth are not damaged, then the best option is to replace the slider; you should not immediately change the entire lock. This is a necessary action only in a situation where the teeth on the zipper are torn out. We will look at how to change the zipper tab below.

Replacing zippers on trousers and bags

What to do if the zipper on your trousers breaks? It can be changed with minimal effort. It is enough to make a small cut with scissors on both sides of the rail at the very base. After this, you need to insert a working slider and push it up. The incision site should be taped or stitched - the zipper will not be fastened below its level.

You can fix your pants even faster if the slider has come out on one side, since you can put the zipper on the zipper by making just one cut between the rail links. This method works when the slider on the plastic fasteners has flown out. The metal rails will either have to be replaced, or the fabric will have to be ripped apart and the pawl inserted from below.

Repairing fasteners on bags and boots follows the same principle. Certain difficulties may arise if it is necessary to repair a flyaway slider from a jacket or some types of boots. Replacing the zipper pawl on such products with an upper plastic soldered stopper is carried out as follows.

  1. First, the plastic must be broken and removed or cut with a utility knife.
  2. Then a runner is placed on the rails.
  3. A metal limiter is installed in place of the removed plastic element.

Probably everyone has encountered a situation where the zipper pulley suddenly broke. Often this happens at the wrong time and requires immediate troubleshooting. The simplest solution to this situation is to take the item with the broken dog to an atelier or workshop and have it replaced. In case of serious damage, the entire lock has to be replaced. However, it is not always possible to promptly take the item for repair, much less wait until the problem is fixed. In such cases, you have to act independently. In this article you will learn what you can do if the pawl on your boot breaks, and how to fix it solely with your own efforts.

Repairing a zipper on a jacket with your own hands using scissors

You can resort to it if an attempt at repair using pliers was unsuccessful. In this case you will need scissors. Let's say the clasp is broken and the slider is on one of the halves. In this case, proceed in this order:

  1. Take the second half of the castle in your hands.
  2. Find the lowest slider position you can.
  3. Using scissors, make a horizontal cut between the teeth.
  4. Place the slider over the cut and pull it all the way through.

Important! For greater effectiveness, apply glue to the area around the cut.

What to do if the slider's tongue breaks?

It happens that haste leads to the tab on the zipper breaking off. This makes the shoes very difficult to fasten or unbuckle. In this situation, do not despair, because this is perhaps the simplest breakdown of the slider.

How to fix the dog on the boot in this case?

  • An ordinary paper clip or a piece of wire will help you with this. One of their edges must be threaded into the eyelet to which the tongue was previously attached, secured, and the lock can be fastened and unfastened without problems until the slider is replaced with a new one. Also in this situation, a key ring can help out.
  • If there are no metal objects at hand that can replace the tongue, then you can use a small piece of rope or tape. To do this, you need to fold it in half, thread the folded ends through the eye and then pull these ends through the resulting loop. Next, you need to tighten the loop well and use your invention.
  • If the width of the slider ear allows it, you can insert a cable clamp or a well-known tie into it, thread it through the hole and tighten it. Next, cut off the excess length, leaving only what is comfortable for use. The new tongue is ready!

Problem 4 – the tongue is broken

Another problematic situation is that the tongue on the slider broke. There is only one way out - replace the slider. However, sometimes this is not possible. Is there any other solution? Yes, in such a situation you can use improvised means. Take a metal paper clip, a keychain ring, or a regular pin and insert it in place of the tab. The replacement looks, of course, not as beautiful as the factory tongue, but it will allow you to unzip and fasten the zipper.

The castle fell apart

A rather unpleasant situation is the moment when the lock on a boot comes apart. This situation again indicates a pawl malfunction. How to make a zipper dog on boots in this case? Most often, it is enough to just pinch the straight sides of the slider with pliers. The most important thing is not to overdo it, so as not to completely break the lock. Without calculating the force, you can damage the slider, and the metal pawl can simply burst.

Important! You can only press a metal pawl with pliers, since plastic does not have the same properties as metal.

Is it possible to rearrange the slider?

In principle, it is possible, but this applies to things where it is not fundamentally important which way the lock opens (handbags, cosmetic bags, etc.). Repairing the “snake” in this case is extremely simple. Move the runner to the opposite side and sew the loose ends together to prevent the runner from slipping.

If the “dog” is completely broken, do not waste time fixing it and buy a new one at a sewing store. If you are unable to select the exact product, do the following:

  1. Unbend the limiter.
  2. Insert a slider.
  3. Rub the teeth of the lock with paraffin or stearin candle.

All! You can use the lock.

The dog gets stuck

If, when fastening your zipper, the zipper pawl does not move smoothly, but jerkily, or moves very tightly and jams, then this requires absolutely opposite manipulations than in the case of the zipper diverging.

In this situation, you need to unclench the straight side parts that cover the lock on both sides. To do this, between the parts that cover the lock on both sides, you need to insert a flat metal object and open them a little. Often such manipulation is enough.

Important! In this case, it would not be superfluous to lubricate the lock teeth with a regular wax or paraffin candle. You can also use a simple pencil for these purposes. You need to carefully go over the teeth with the stylus. After these manipulations, the lock should work without problems, the slider will begin to move smoothly along the zipper.

Life hacks: how to extend the life of a zipper and quickly fix the slider

One of the reasons why lightning gets stuck is the temperature difference in the house. To avoid this defect, it must be lubricated with candle wax. Another reason for damage to the fastener may be its teeth falling out or breaking. In this case, you can try replacing them with artificial ones.

In a plastic zipper, a thick fishing line, wound several times, is inserted into the gap. Then several knots are made at the end, which are burned with a lighter and crimped using pliers approximately in the shape of the teeth of the fastener.

This method will not be able to extend the life of the zipper for a long time, but it will postpone a visit to the repair shop for a while.

The process of repairing the teeth of a metal zipper occurs by inserting identical teeth from other fasteners in their place. To do this, you need to use pliers and a small screwdriver to carefully loosen the required number of links on the old zipper, and then move them to the empty space of the new fastener, squeezing them tightly, but not tightly, with pliers.

Of course, there are few people who want to spend their time repairing clothes in this way, but if the item is leather and expensive, then this option is quite acceptable.

It happens that over time, the teeth of the zipper slightly move in different directions, and they begin to interfere with the passage of the slider. Then you need to open the lock and place it on a hard surface, then tap the links lightly with a hammer. This should return them to working position. However, this option only applies to metal clasps.

In a situation where the key fob on the slider has broken and it has become inconvenient to open and close the zipper, there are two options for getting out of this situation. In the first option, a small ring, reminiscent in principle and shape of a key ring, can come to the rescue. It is inserted into the upper part of the runner, and any keychain can easily be put on it.

In the second option, a small cut is made in the keychain. Its sides are unclenched and inserted into the upper part of the pawl, and then returned back.

If the zipper diverges, but the teeth remain intact and unharmed, the cause of the breakdown lies in the slider itself. To do this, take pliers and, with the clasp closed, gently press the slider along the sides on both sides. Now you can put the slider on the zipper without fear, because this operation will help bring the teeth closer together and they will not separate.

How to replace a zipper slider?

If all of the above manipulations to rehabilitate the lock did not help you, and the zipper itself and its teeth are intact, then you need to replace the pawl with a new one. Not to mention the situation when the dog is completely broken, for example, cracked.

How to put a zipper dog in boots? It's not as difficult as it might seem at first glance. To do this, you should follow this procedure:

  1. Carefully undo the seam that secures the zipper at the bottom.
  2. Remove the lower part of the snake.
  3. Remove the metal stopper using wire cutters and, if necessary, an awl if you need to pry off the edge of the stopper.
  4. Remove the old slider.
  5. Take the new slider and, holding it slightly at an angle, put it on the zipper, connecting its parts.
  6. Check how the fastener works: it should work smoothly, not jam or come apart.
  7. If it does not work perfectly, fix the problem by pressing the slider halves or releasing them, depending on the problem.
  8. When the zipper is closed, make a lower stopper so that it does not diverge above the stop point; to do this, the bottom can be sewn with thread, placing the seam parallel to the teeth, or put on a metal stopper, securing it around the teeth.
  9. Insert the bottom of the repaired zipper into place to sew it in.
  10. Using an awl, restore the stitches that you cut earlier.

Important! If you have a sewing machine that can sew the thick fabric of your boots, it is better to do this with its help, because this way the stitches will look neater.

All about zipper repair.

Zippers haven't changed much since they were invented.
The “zipper” itself and the technology for its production were patented by Gideon Sundback, an American engineer of Swedish origin, in 1913. Since that moment, not only the type of fastener has hardly changed, but also the problems faced by its owners. Today we at 1Gai.ru will tell you how to fix all the problems that you may encounter when using zippers, from stuck fabric to faulty teeth.

How to prevent zipper failure?

In order to avoid having to repair the zipper on your boots or the pawl on it in the future, you should use the fastener very carefully. There are certain rules for using the lock that will prevent damage:

  • it is necessary to regularly clean the lock with a small brush from dirt and dust that somehow gets on the shoes;
  • do not allow trouser fabric to get caught in the zipper, as this may damage the teeth or pawl;
  • periodically lubricate the lock with a paraffin or wax candle or the lead of a simple pencil - this procedure helps the slider move smoothly along the zipper;
  • When fastening the lock, you should keep your hand straight, do not pull it to the side, under no circumstances tug or apply excessive force;
  • To eliminate minor problems in a timely manner, especially when the pawl moves tightly along the teeth, it is enough to slightly unclench the slider and lubricate it, rather than completely breaking it later.

The zipper doesn't fasten well

This is not such a rare occurrence. The “dog” slips through the lock with difficulty, and additional difficulties arise with fastening and unfastening. How to fix the lock on the jacket in this case?

There are several ways to debug the zipper:

  • Lubricate the lock with lard along the entire length. This repair method is suitable for leather products. If the item is made of textiles, greasy stains may appear on it.
  • Candle wax. Once lubricated with wax, the fastener begins to work normally.
  • Soft pencil lead. Using graphite to lubricate the snake, as practice shows, is the most effective.

Video material

Now you know what to do if the pawl on your boot breaks and how to fix it. These methods will also come in handy if the dog on your jacket has fallen off or fallen off. Everything is incredibly simple and anyone can do it. If you doubt that you can cope with such a task, you can always contact a shoe repair shop or studio, where they will help you change the dog. In any case, you should always treat your shoes with care, use all fasteners and zippers correctly, keep them clean, then you won’t have to deal with their repairs.

If the lightning is “stuck”

When you encounter this problem, it appears as if the zipper is caught on something. It is difficult to unfasten, and until you fix it, you will be walking indoors in a warm jacket.

What to do? Take a graphite pencil and run the tip along the teeth several times. If the method does not work, move on to more serious means.

Take Vaseline, bar soap or lip balm, move the clasp up a little, and then lubricate the prongs. Try slowly moving the clasp back down. Continue alternating steps until the zipper is completely unzipped. This method will also work if there is fabric stuck in the zipper.

What to do if the slider tongue breaks off

Many people have faced this situation. When fastening a zipper on a boot or jacket, a tab comes off and remains in your hands. This usually happens when something gets into the slider and it gets jammed, or if the zipper works very hard. If the fastening on the pawl has not broken off, then a regular paper clip, a pin or a piece of fairly strong thin wire will help to get out of the situation for a short time. In the future, you can either make a decent tongue from scrap materials (for example, use a small keychain), or replace the pawl.

Another option

How to change the zipper pawl inside without removing the stopper? Some people replace it like this:

  1. Using a knife or screwdriver, one edge of the pawl is opened slightly so that it can be easily put on the zipper.
  2. The part is put on the teeth of the zipper.
  3. Use pliers to press down the open edge. Ready!

This option is much faster in terms of replacement time, but you need to be very careful, since when opening the edge of the pawl, it can simply bend. Then you'll have to buy it again. Caution must also be used when clamping it onto the teeth of the zipper. Do not clamp too hard, as it may not work well or even break.

Obviously, the zipper type fastener is known to everyone and is very popular in all its applications and manifestations.

These are clothes and shoes, bags and cases, and a lot of other equally useful things. Do you know what underlies its operating principle?

Few people know that the idea for its implementation was given to the world by an ordinary bird. More precisely, a bird's feather. Even more precisely, the principle of connecting the elements of the pen into a single plane. This is an alternating interlocking of feather fibers, ultimately forming a single whole. The same thing happens in ordinary “lightning”. When it is fastened, the elements of one edge engage with the elements of the other edge using a lock or, in other words, a “slider”.

The elements can be plastic or metal staples or teeth, one end attached to a strip of fabric. The plastic version can be molded (called a “tractor”) or twisted (“spiral”).

The weakest link of this entire fastening device is usually the lock, or “slider”. Its malfunction can manifest itself in the breakdown of the “tongue” - the device that we pinch with our fingers. The mechanism that holds the slider closed may break, and then it will come unfastened. In addition, the malfunction can manifest itself in the divergence of the halves of the zipper when trying to fasten it. In the latter case, many advise pressing the halves of the lock closer to each other.

Device, types and markings

Zippers come with one-way and two-way fasteners. Detachable zippers are used on warm, sportswear, as well as on jumpers and sweatshirts. They are usually of high quality. There are locks:

  • tractor for down jackets and down jackets;
  • spiral for thinner and more delicate fabrics, as well as for bags and wallets;
  • metal for denim, shoes.

Locks have teeth of various sizes. On outerwear and products made from coarse materials, the zippers are usually larger; in delicate fabrics, zippers with small teeth are sewn.

The runners are also varied. There are the following types:

  • automatic, when the dog locks the teeth in any position;
  • a semi-automatic machine requires the installation of a stopper so that the lock locks and cannot be unfastened;
  • The haberdashery runner cannot be fixed in a certain position.

The latter is installed on the locks of bags and wallets, semi-automatic devices are more commonly seen on shoes, and machine guns are more commonly seen on jackets and down jackets.

What is needed to replace the dog?

How to change the zipper on a jacket on your own? This will take a few minutes, but will save you for a long time from the inconvenience caused by a faulty zipper. What is needed to replace the dog? You will need the following:

After determining the cause of the zipper problem, you can begin to replace the pawl. If the reason is not the slider itself, but the teeth of the zipper, then you can try moving the bottom clamp a little higher, if possible. This option is suitable for a zipper on trousers if several teeth have popped out or are damaged and do not allow you to fasten your fly.

The right place on the fabric for the zipper

The work ahead depends not only on the type of clothing. It’s good if the work technique is supported by correct calculations. We focus on the following parameters:

  1. Selecting the right size. The length of the item purchased is important. It’s still worth leaving a couple of cm of zipper in reserve. An even stitch is ultimately ensured and it will not be difficult to cut off the remaining tails.
  2. Correct markings. For a hidden or open zipper, it is important to mark the lines in the desired areas. You can draw them with a piece of soap or chalk.
  3. Note for the base of the garment. A similar method is needed with initial knowledge of processing the desired surface. You will have to sew in the zipper during basting and remove it after basting.
  4. The final touch. After the points voiced, it will not be difficult to complete the work efficiently. Now, manually or using a sewing machine, complete the repair of the broken areas.

It is important to remember that for bottom, top and side zippers, the size of the zipper and its location matters. From the side, its scale can become significantly smaller when processing trousers and other underwear.

Repairing a zipper by pressing the slider

First, you can try to tighten the lock without removing the slider.

Find pliers, you can use wire cutters, or even a hammer

Find a place near the fastener where the interior space is empty, and not where the partition is. This is the part closer to the bottom of the jacket, as a rule.

Try to squeeze this edge with pliers until the upper and lower walls touch each other.

When you release the pliers, you will see that the edges will again move away a certain distance, but less.

Try checking the fastening of the zipper, if it starts to fasten, then everything is fine... koposhilki.ru

If the zipper is still not fastened very well, then you will have to remove the slider...

To remove a faulty lock, you must remove the stopper on one or both halves of the fasteners. On one - if the zipper has a detachable connection at the bottom. The limiter is most often a metal bracket that prevents the “dog” from jumping out of the serrated tape.

This staple will need to be carefully bent using an awl or a thin screwdriver and completely removed from the strip of zipper base fabric.

After the limiter is removed, the slider is removed through the top of the zipper. We see that it is really distorted and therefore the zipper does not work... We clamp the slider with pliers, correct its curvature. We press it on one side and the other. The corrected slider is placed on the zipper.

Replace the limiter

and clamp it with pliers.

Checking whether the zipper fastens... ladyzest.com

It happens that there is no limiter on the zipper, and the limiter is the bend of the fastener fabric followed by stitching. In this case, the edge needs to be trimmed. If this is difficult to do, then you can proceed as follows:

We will need small pliers (or manicure tongs, or a flathead screwdriver) and large pliers

Insert the flat end of a tool (screwdriver, for example) under the clamp of the slider and slightly press it out,

so that it can be easily removed from the zipper.

Insert the pliers into the slider as shown here to widen it a little.

Just don't overdo it, or you'll completely break it.

Then we insert the zipper slider again...

And then use small pliers or nail clippers to gently press the sides

After such manipulations, the castle simply has to work :o)

What to do if the zipper on your bag comes apart

Has the lock on your favorite bag come loose?
This is not a reason to urgently look for a replacement for a convenient accessory. There are several simple ways to solve the problem using improvised means and even without contacting a specialist. First you need to understand what exactly is the cause of the breakdown. There may be several of them:

  • The “dog” itself has broken, for example, if the slider is of poor quality or there has been mechanical damage.
  • Due to frequent use, the slider has become somewhat loose. This is one of the most common and easily correctable reasons. When the zipper is loose, it cannot connect the edges of the zipper properly and, as a result, cannot close. Sometimes it can even pop out completely.
  • It happens that the lightning diverges due to the fact that the teeth have been damaged - in this case, there is only a way to the master.

It is also better to leave the bag to a qualified specialist if you yourself cannot understand the cause of the breakdown.
If the slider is simply loose, you just need to gently tighten it so that the zipper works as it should again. To do this, take pliers, pull the slider to the bottom edge of the bag and unfasten the lock. Now grab the top and bottom edges of the dog with pliers, and then gently press. There is no need to make any serious efforts so as not to break the “dog”. If the slider is plastic, the steps remain the same. But remember that plastic is much more fragile than metal, and therefore you need to act much more carefully.

But this method, unfortunately, can only be used a few times. After which the slider may break.

How to put a runner on pants, a bag and shoes

One-piece metal or spiral locks are installed on shoes. They last a long time, but the pawl can fly off or break off if moved suddenly. If the latter happens, then remove the remains of the slider, remove the limiter and install a new slider, and return the limiter back.

The same technology can be used when changing the sliders on trousers and bags.

How to change the lock on a boot, watch the video.

High-quality locks usually last a long time. Most often you have to change the dog if it falls off or stops fixing the teeth. Do not rush to throw away the item if this happens, but fix it yourself. To replace the slider on your lock, use the tips above.

Determining the type of fault

Having investigated the cause of the breakdown, it will be easier to correct it. If the zipper is missing one or more teeth, the problem is more difficult to solve. But it is possible to do this. Find an old lock with similar teeth and take the part from there, following these steps:

  1. Remove one or more pieces from the old lock using an awl or a sharp-tipped knife.
  2. Attach it to the lock you are repairing.

This is only a temporary measure. You will have to change the lock.

Before starting work, check the integrity of the fabric on which the teeth are attached. If it is damaged where the element is missing, then you are unlikely to be able to do anything.

If the zipper itself is not damaged, but the lock still does not work, determine the type of damage.

  • The lock jams in certain areas. Fixing such a breakdown is not difficult: rub the part with paraffin or soap.
  • If the zipper diverges, then press it from all sides.
  • The runner jumped out. This damage is more difficult to fix. The repair method will depend on the type of broken lock.
  • When moving, the dog does not connect the parts, but slides to the side. Try to repair the old one or buy the same runner at the store.

Before starting repairs, determine what type of lock your lock is.
