But it is not necessary to immediately run to the nearest dry cleaner after stains appear - the product can be cleaned at home. It is enough to know a few features of cleaning down jackets and down jackets, as well as to have suitable products on hand.
Dishwashing liquid or laundry soap
Dishwashing liquid or ordinary laundry soap can help in the fight against stubborn and greasy dirt on a down jacket. These products effectively remove grease stains from nylon, polyester and other artificial materials.
Dishwashing liquid removes grease well and leaves no streaks. It also helps remove foundation stains that often remain on the collar.
Step-by-step instructions on how to clean greasy areas on a jacket without washing:
- Prepare the solution.
In 1 liter of water, dissolve 2 teaspoons of any dishwashing liquid or the same amount of finely grated laundry soap - Apply the cleaning solution and scrub the dirt thoroughly.
Dampen a soft brush, sponge or towel in the resulting solution. Apply the product over all contaminated areas, starting from the edges of the stain and gradually moving towards its center. Try to do all cleaning procedures quickly so that the insulation does not have time to absorb too much soapy water. - Wipe off any remaining detergent.
Rub a damp cloth or towel over the area to be cleaned. You can use a spray bottle with clean water. - Blot off excess moisture with a dry cloth.
Ideally, you should use microfiber, as it absorbs water well and also cleans the product without streaks.
This method of cleaning without washing is also called home dry cleaning. However, this method has its own nuances:
- Do not rub the Bolognese or other fabric surface too much;
- Start treating any stains and dirt from the edges, gradually moving towards the center, this way you can avoid the appearance of streaks;
- If after such home cleaning there are still stains, greasy shine or serious grime, then it is better to wash the jacket by hand or in a washing machine.
Acetic acid and salt
Excellent stain remover. It's easy to prepare. Combine 500 ml of water with two spoons of vinegar essence, add 1.5 tbsp. spoons of table salt. Stir everything thoroughly until completely dissolved. And then rub the collar with a cotton pad soaked in the solution.
Old stains require longer exposure, so you need to leave the jacket in this condition for a while. After rinsing it off and sending it to dry in fresh air, this will also help the unpleasant odor disappear.
Using ammonia
One of the most favorite home remedies that helps get rid of many stains (and not only on clothes) is ammonia (ammonia). The product is suitable for cleaning both white down jackets and black (dark) ones:
- First you need to dilute the cleaning solution. Dilute 5 ml of ammonia in 100 ml of water.
- In the room you are cleaning, be sure to open the windows so as not to breathe in alcohol fumes.
- Soak a towel or cotton cloth in the prepared solution and wring it out well.
- Now proceed to cleaning the dirt. Dirt most often collects on the elbows, collars, pockets and sleeve seams, so pay attention to these areas first.
- Start cleaning the product with vigorous movements, try to thoroughly moisten the contaminated parts with ammonia solution to remove even complex stains.
- Periodically turn over the cloth soaked in the product and go over the already cleaned areas with the clean side again.
- Similarly, rub the remaining dirty parts of the product, especially paying attention, for example, to the inner sides of the sleeves (cuffs), and the seams at the elbows.
- If necessary, re-soak the towel in the ammonia solution, remembering to turn it over to the clean side. The surface of the product should be completely wet.
- After this, leave the item to dry. Inspect the dry jacket: if you notice that you missed some dirt, then soak the cloth in the alcohol solution again and try to wipe it off.
Wash a greasy jacket collar
Any item, and even more so a piece of outerwear, can be cleaned at home if:
- Do not put off cleaning until later, as old stains
Especially traces of grease are difficult to clean over time. You will have to remove old greasy stains using more aggressive means, which not every material can withstand. - Find out what type of fabric or other material you will be working with. All information is on the tag of your clothing. Select the appropriate cleaning method and product.
- Before using any cleaning product, test it on the underside of the item.
- When cleaning your jacket, do not use chlorine-containing products or bleaches.
- When using industrial household chemicals, follow all recommendations and doses indicated on the packaging by the manufacturer.
- If there is fur on the collar of your outerwear, it must be unfastened. Sewn fur parts should be protected from getting wet by wrapping them in polyethylene.
- For ease of work, prepare your clothes. Lay it out on a flat surface. It is better to first clean the collar from surface dust using a soft brush.
- If your jacket gets wet due to precipitation, first wait for it to dry and only then start cleaning it.
- A cleaned but still damp collar should be dried naturally and flattened. Do not use batteries, hair dryers or various heating devices.
- And lastly, many will think that it would be easier to wash a jacket or down jacket (especially if its collar is very greasy) using a washing machine. But we must take into account that many, especially bulky items with filling, do not like machine washing. This can cause the insulation to become loose and the jacket to become deformed. If clothes are decorated with rhinestones, natural fur and other sewn-on trim details, there is a risk that they will come off (come off) after washing. It is generally not recommended to soak leather products for a long time. If it gets too wet, the skin becomes rough and may even crack. In addition, there is a possibility that the dye will wash off. And the most important thing is that by washing an item, you are unlikely to get rid of grease stains and other serious contaminants.
Micellar water
Some of the most difficult stains (especially on light-colored jackets and collars) are stains from makeup and sweat. You can cope with them with the help of micellar water, which is familiar to many girls. This product perfectly removes foundation or powder residue from the face, so why shouldn’t it cope with such stains on clothes. This cleaning method is carried out locally by hand and does not require washing in a washing machine:
- Soak a cotton pad in your chosen micellar water.
- Blot the contaminated fabric (for example, the greasy collar of a down jacket).
- Leave the product on the product for a few minutes so that it has time to dissolve the cosmetics.
- Remove dirt and cosmetic residues with a damp cloth.
- If the stains were not removed after the first procedure, repeat it.
For this cleaning method, you can only use micellar water without dyes. If the method does not help, then try a cosmetic product from another manufacturer.
Tips for the future: how to prevent your collar from becoming greasy
Some stains will have to be washed out over a long period of time, and some will not be able to be washed out at all. To reduce the time it takes to clean things and prevent the appearance of unwashable stains, it is better to purchase a special impregnation. This is the best method of prevention.
Impregnations are sold for suede and leather products. Bolognese fabrics are initially treated with a special compound that repels dirt, water and grease. However, after several washes, the protective layer may disappear, so it must be periodically renewed using commercial sprays. They can be found in sporting goods stores, and leather and suede formulations are offered in shoe and leather goods stores.
Special impregnation can be found for fabrics made of various materials, but with a fur collar it will be more difficult. Compositions for it are not common, and all that remains is to regularly clean the material, thereby preventing the appearance of severe grease.
It is important to clean the collar in a timely manner. Old stains will have to be removed not on your own, but through dry cleaning.

Special stain removers
If you are afraid to get involved with folk recipes and various improvised means, then you should pay attention to specialized household chemicals that help clean your down jacket from greasy and stubborn stains at home.
There are many cleaning products on the market, so below are the most effective ones:
- Sano Spark is available in powder form, has a pleasant smell, and a large amount of product;
- Antipyatin soap for removing complex stains, smells nice, is absolutely safe for children and people prone to allergic reactions;
- Vanish is available in several formats, including classic gel, convenient to use, suitable for colored and delicate items;
- Down Wash & Clean is one of the most effective gel products for removing greasy stains; it helps to delicately wash fabrics with a water-repellent coating;
- Ecover stain remover in the form of a spray, acts instantly, removes complex stains;
- Dr. Beckmann gel product, which is available in several variations for different types of products, can only be used according to the instructions;
- Frau Schmidt stain remover in the form of soap, removes grease, oil and wine stains, is safe for the skin, works equally effectively on both white and colored items.
If the manufacturer has not left any special notes on the packaging regarding the use of the product, then the principle of use of the drug will be standard:
- Wet the contaminated area of the product with water.
- Apply the stain remover of your choice using a soft cloth or sponge, rubbing from the edge to the middle of the stain.
- Leave the item for a while so that the product has time to work.
- Rinse the product three times under running water (or remove any remaining product with a damp sponge if you are removing stains locally).
- Dry the down jacket well.
Cleaning suede
Suede also requires special care. When cleaning, it is better to use special rubber brushes, which can be found in a leather and suede store.
Important! This material must not be cleaned with abrasives. If you use household chemicals for purposes other than their intended purpose, traces of shedding may appear as the paint will come off from the suede.
To avoid unpleasant consequences, it is best to use a mixture of soda and milk:
- Heat 200 ml of milk in the microwave or in a water bath.
- Add 1 teaspoon of soda to a glass of milk.
- To stir thoroughly. Pour a few drops of liquid onto each stain. Rub until dirt is removed.
The composition may leave small light stains. They can be easily removed with a sponge or cloth soaked in water.
Steam cleaning
Another equally effective method is steam cleaning. This method allows you to remove the unsightly shine from the fabric and return it to its original appearance, as if you had just purchased the item in a store:
- To steam a down jacket or down jacket, you will need an iron with a vertical steam function or a special household steamer (a steam generator or steam cleaner may not be suitable, so read the instructions included with the device).
- Place or hang the product so that it is more convenient for you to steam it.
- Direct a stream of steam at the dirty or greasy area.
- Immediately after treatment, wipe the area with a cloth dampened in a solution of any detergent (it is advisable to choose microfiber, as it absorbs remaining dirt well). Hot steam will help break up the stain, and a wet sponge with a cleaning product will remove it from the fabric.
Dentifrice
Tooth powder will help you quickly and easily clean a shiny collar. To do this, you need to apply it dry to dirty areas of the down jacket, moisten the sponge or cloth and rub. Moreover, treat not only the stains, but also around them.
After 10–15 minutes, rub again, and then rinse with warm water. As a rule, after these manipulations, not a trace of greasy remains.
As you can see, there is no need to purchase expensive products and powders to remove stains and get rid of grime. To combat problems, there are more budget options, but no less effective.
Preparation
Just as the process of cleaning a down jacket is important, the process of preparing for it is also important. It doesn’t matter whether you clean the entire jacket or just part of it, try to follow these tips step by step:
- Provide good lighting. In dim or uneven light, you may not notice that you missed a spot somewhere, or that streaks have formed somewhere.
- Wear rubber gloves.
- Hang the down jacket on a hanger - this will make it convenient to carry out all the following operations.
- Check all the pockets - you need to take out everything that is in them. A small paperclip will leave rusty marks, forgotten candy will ruin the fabric, etc. There are many options - all of them are based on someone’s bitter experience.
- Unfasten everything you can: hood, fur, mittens, belt and other removable parts.
- Button up all pockets and shirtfronts.
- Read the recommendations on the product label.
- Before removing local contamination with a stain remover, try treating the stain with regular wet wipes. In 50% of cases it actually works. Well, if not, at least it will make the stain remover’s job easier.
How to clean a white down jacket?
Those people who choose white fabrics for outerwear can only be called “daredevils”. Yes, it is very beautiful and unusual, but this will only add to the torment. One awkward movement of lipstick, a dark bag rubbing your pocket, dirt from the wheels of a passing car - and now, the down jacket is no longer snow-white.
But we saved a life hack for this case too. First, a couple of important recommendations for cleaning a white jacket:
- One of the main rules: it is better to clean a white down jacket all at once, because... there is a possibility of leaving circles, streaks or yellow spots.
- It will be easier for those who have a jacket made of water-repellent and dense fabric. It is heavier for those whose outer layer is made of thin synthetics. Dirt usually sticks to it less, but if it is ingrained, it is very difficult to clean it off. This recommendation, of course, is for those who are just planning to buy a down jacket.
- Never use products that contain chlorine.
- It is better to freshen a white down jacket once a week. And remove fresh stains immediately, or at least treat them immediately with a damp cloth.
- Do not clean with brightly colored liquids, as they may stain the white item.
- When cleaning locally, do not wet the down jacket through, as you may damage the filling.
- If home treatment does not produce results, do not torture yourself or your down jacket. Take it to the dry cleaner. It's not cheap, but they can clean your jacket immaculately.
How to do the cleaning itself:
- Hang your jacket on hangers.
- Make a soap solution. To do this, you can use laundry soap, shampoo or dish gel.
- Dampen a sponge in it and wipe the outside of the down jacket using top-down movements.
- Clean difficult areas more thoroughly: sleeves, pockets, collar, hem.
- Wipe the fabric with a damp, clean cloth.
- If the stains cannot be treated, try the degreasing option with peroxide or use a stain remover.
You still have to work with your hands
The fact that greasy areas can be cleaned without washing is great news! The only bad thing is that you will have to get rid of greasy marks manually, because this can take quite a lot of time. But remember that such cleaning is much more gentle for a down jacket, and don’t be lazy.
Better stock up on the following things.
- With a soft brush. Still, getting rid of greasy stains is not as easy as getting rid of fresh greasy stains, so sometimes you have to rub.
- With a sponge. It is needed to distribute the product at the beginning of cleaning and remove its excess at the end. Sometimes you can wipe a stain with it, but we do not recommend replacing the brush with a sponge.
- Napkins or paper towels. With their help, we will try to absorb excess moisture so that the contaminated areas dry out as quickly as possible after treatment. They can also remove excess fat.
- Gloves. You will have to remove stains manually, and many of the products that we want to offer do not have a very beneficial effect on the skin of your hands. It's better to take care of protection.
Now let's look at the main anti-greasy remedies - both factory-made and folk.
