How washing powders affect health

The composition of synthetic washing powders is often a combination of components that pose a serious threat to health. And in combination with each other, these chemicals enhance the harmful effects on the body.

Such washing powders are especially dangerous for children. Because their skin is not sufficiently adapted to external influences, it is highly permeable. Toxic substances enter the body through the skin and cause undesirable consequences.

Infrequent contact with low-quality washing powder will most likely not affect a healthy adult. However, constant contact with harmful washing powder or other detergents leads to toxic substances accumulating in the body and causing various diseases. Therefore, it is better and safer to choose washing powders without harmful components.

What's harmful about washing powders?

The most common harmful substances in washing powders:

  • surfactants;
  • phosphates;
  • flavorings;
  • phthalates;
  • sulfates;
  • chlorine.

Let's remember why the chemical components of washing powders are harmful.

INFLUENCE OF POWDER ON FABRIC: MYTH OR REALITY?

A study of the effect of powder on the fabric of a washed item yielded interesting facts.

All of the above deficiencies are not violations

Products with these shortcomings are simply deprived of the opportunity to qualify for the Russian Quality Mark.

  • Strength

. After 25 washes at a water temperature of 40 °C, in some cases the items turned gray, in others they turned yellow, or both.

Fabrics also lost strength in width, length, or both. More details can be found in the product cards.

Roskachestvo effect

On average, powders reduce the strength of washed items by 23–27%. In 2022, Persil topped this peculiar rating - by 45%, that is, after 25 washes, the item became almost half as durable. Following the recommendations of Roskachestvo, the manufacturer corrected the defect (based on the results of research in 2022).

  • Loss of color.
Tests on the effect of the powder on the color loss of things were carried out on samples of blue color, since red and blue dyes are considered the most unstable. Result: after 15 washes, all items lost color. The question is how much did you lose: three percent or fifteen?
  • Spools.
But there were practically no pilling marks on the washed items even after 15 washes at 40°C. That is, not a single washing powder studied contributes to the formation of pellets. You can safely wash even knitwear, because knitwear is more susceptible to pilling than other materials.
  • Rigidity and roughness of the fabric.
If too much mineral matter from the powder is deposited on the fabric during washing, the fabric may become stiff and rough after several washes. How much such “precipitation” there is is indicated by the ash content indicator. According to the standards established by Roskachestvo, ash content should not be higher than 1%.

Ash content - the remaining ash after calcination of the fabric

Ash content allows you to judge how many mineral substances are deposited on the fabric during washing. According to 2022 data, for example, the ash content of Dosia and Ariel turned out to be slightly higher than the advanced requirements - 1.1%. Myth has 1.6%, BiMax 2.7%.

Fabrics were tested for ash content after 25 washes with one or another detergent; washes were carried out at a water temperature of 40 °C.

Surfactants

The problem is that the surfactants are not completely removed after rinsing. When in contact with the skin, surfactants penetrate the bloodstream. They gradually accumulate in the internal organs. People who constantly use detergents with surfactants have an increased concentration of hazardous substances in their internal organs.

Accumulating in body tissues, surfactants disrupt the normal course of biochemical processes in cells and weaken the immune system. This causes allergic reactions, diseases of the circulatory system and other disorders, including oncology.

In some European countries, legislation limits the surfactant content in washing powders to two percent. In Russia, consumers should carefully study the composition of the powder indicated on the packaging. This is the only way to protect yourself as much as possible. Because the amount of surfactants often exceeds the safe level. For example, Ushasty Nyan children's washing powder contains 15% surfactants.

WATER:

  • moisturizes the fabric
  • dissolves washing powder
  • washes away and removes dirt
  • conducts heat

Not everything is new - just a remake of the old

In order not to lose in competition, commodity producers are faced with the need to introduce a new product to the market as often as possible.
It is in the “News” segment that the frontline of the struggle for the consumer lies, to whom you always serve something fresh. Technological progress, however, does not keep pace with the unbridled desire of the manufacturer to constantly amaze its consumer with something new. You can’t get enough new products in such quantity, and manipulations with “re-facing” are used: not newly created products are presented as such by cleverly giving them a new face, image. And it passes! The deception, in general, is not great, but it is a deception! So, without a twinge of conscience, a product that has been on the market for a long time is passed off as “revolutionary new”, but... with a slightly changed name, in new packaging, and, naturally, at a new price! We are, of course, not just talking about washing powders. This technique is “Everything new is just a remake of the old!” – universal in marketing. Cosmetic “rejuvenation” of products that set the teeth on edge is presented as a change in the model range with a corresponding increase in price. But in reality it turns out that a familiar and cheaper product from 2-3 years ago is no worse than such a “super new product”. Washing powders belong to that category of products in which it is especially difficult to surprise with something fundamentally new, since they all consist of a set of the same components. Nothing fundamentally different has yet been invented. But there is a need for continuous improvement of quality. Manufacturers of detergents, constantly improving their quality, thereby respond to improving the quality of those products, the use of which leads to contamination of clothes and other items. The more high-quality, durable paints, hair dyes and other potential contaminants in our clothes become, the greater the cleaning power of washing powders. Such dialectics! When children drew with slate pencils, there was no need for detergents, which are now indispensable with the advent of felt-tip pens, markers, etc. Products that use strong dyes are becoming a growing problem. Today you can paint fences with other drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic)! An increase in cleaning power is achieved by creating a more successful composition with the introduction of additional types of enzymes, ensuring increased chemical purity of the components and special care of their mixing. This becomes possible as a result of scientific research and the introduction of high technologies.

Let's talk about tests confirming the high quality of detergents, using the example of cooperation in this direction with the Henkel company, which produces the world-famous Persil.

Persil vs Persil. Comparative tests

demonstrating respect for its consumer not in words, but in deeds, it was one of the first to begin prefacing the advertising campaign of its new products with tests in Rostest-Moscow, which should confirm the authenticity of the declared properties and qualities. The startup began testing the Persil “POWER PERSIL” AUTOMAT synthetic detergent produced by a new (at that time) formula in comparison with its own product of the previous generation. The task was to obtain documentary evidence that the new product actually has more effective cleaning power. Coffee and tea, wine and juice, grass, chocolate, dirt, hamburger grease, cosmetics, carrots, tomatoes, oil... According to statistics, it is precisely this type of pollution that we most often annoyingly stain our things with. It is clear that leading manufacturers of synthetic detergents compete primarily in removing precisely this type of stain. The comparative testing program for the new product and the prototype included 20 test cycles for 15 stains in two temperature conditions - “Cotton 40°” and “Cotton 60°”. Processing of the obtained data using the Fisher test stated that the new synthetic detergent Persil “POWER PERSIL” AUTOMAT is characterized by a higher cleaning ability: for six contaminants the new product showed a “higher” result in comparison with the synthetic detergent produced previously, and for nine - even “ much higher":

  • coffee (much higher)
  • tea (much higher)
  • black currant (much higher)
  • blueberry juice (much higher)
  • young red wine (above)
  • grass (much higher)
  • chocolate (much higher)
  • tomato puree (above)
  • blood (above)
  • grass and dirt (much higher)
  • carrots + mashed potatoes (above)
  • red wine (much higher)
  • pigment + oil (above)
  • cosmetics (much higher)
  • colored olive oil (above)

For those who prefer handmade

For those who prefer washing by hand (as they say, “in a basin”), we present the results of comparative tests of a synthetic detergent of a new formula for hand washing SMS “Persil for hand washing (hand wash)” with a previously produced product. For six contaminations, the new product showed “higher” results, and for five - “significantly higher”:

  • coffee (above)
  • tea (much higher)
  • black currant (much higher)
  • blueberry juice (much higher)
  • grass (above)
  • chocolate (much higher)
  • tomato puree (above)
  • blood (much higher)
  • carrots + mashed potatoes (above)
  • cosmetics (above)
  • hamburger fat (above)

So if, unfortunately, one of the above stains appears on your things, this is not yet a reason to be seriously upset: to regain the lost cleanliness, you don’t even need to bother with the washing machine. In this case, it is enough to have a basin on hand and an SMS message “Persil for hand wash”

PERSIL v. COMPETITOR

At the next stage, the task was posed more acutely: the experts were asked, as they say, to compare PERSIL GOLD, which had just appeared then, with the best analogue available on the Russian market.
Self-assessment of products based on comparison with analogues is provided for by most quality assessment models, but enterprises are extremely reluctant to do it. Competitors often prefer not to notice each other point-blank, preferring in advertising campaigns to risklessly compare their products with some abstract, hypothetical (even such a definition has appeared!) analogue, slyly called “ordinary”. Perhaps this is the first time that a manufacturer has offered to conduct an independent examination of the quality of its products in comparison with a truly real and strongest analogue on the market. The goal was by no means to “put down” a competitor and build their PR on such anti-advertising - this would contradict the ethics of this kind of comparative testing. Therefore, what kind of powder was used for comparison was not made public. But experts guaranteed that this was not some hypothetical analog convenient for comparison, but a very real competitor of the same class, “weight category” and price range. The CMC Persil Gold sample, in comparison with the analog sample when washed in automatic drum-type washing machines on the “cotton 60°C” program, after processing the results according to the Fisher test, showed significantly better washing ability for the following contaminants: Textile base “Cotton”:

  • red paint for painting.

Textile base “Mixed composition (polyester 65% and cotton 35%)”:

  • rust
  • markers (orange, pink)
  • hair dye (chestnut N3, medium blond N6, silver blond C10, black N1)
  • paint for painting (red, green).

Textile base "Polyester":

  • rust,
  • markers (orange, pink, green)
  • hair dye (fire red R15, dark chestnut N2, chestnut N3, medium blond N6, pearl blonde A10, silver blonde C10, black N1)
  • paint for painting (yellow, red, green),
  • coffee (CFT BC-2),
  • tea (CFT VS-3),
  • black currant (CFT CS-12),
  • blueberry juice (СFT CS-15),
  • red wine (CFT CS-103),
  • chocolate drink (CFT CS-44).

What standard gold PERSIL

Among the “experimental” detergents was PERSIL GOLD PLUS powder.
Its fundamental feature is that it is environmentally friendly - it does not contain phosphates, which are replaced by a special modified system of components that effectively work against hardness salts and at the same time dissolve in water without any problems. Before releasing a new environmentally friendly product onto the market, the manufacturer decided to answer, as they say, the question that naturally arises among consumers: will it be worse in cleaning ability than its predecessor, albeit less environmentally friendly? The question, frankly speaking, is a burning one. In theory and in words, we are all sincerely for the environment! Under one condition, however: if it doesn’t cost us anything personally! If you need to take an extra step to get to the ballot box, the piece of paper ends up on the sidewalk. And if the most environmentally friendly powder turns out to be not as “washing” and less economical than a non-ecological one, then it will simply become uncompetitive. This, unfortunately, is the logic of the market. In short, consumers should be confident that by switching to an environmentally friendly detergent, they will not lose in the quality of their laundry. In order not to be unfounded in promising statements, the Henkel company proposed to Rostest-Moscow to conduct an examination of the general cleaning ability of the powder of the ecological formulation PERSIL GOLD PLUS and, based on its results, confirm or refute the manufacturer’s claim that it is functionally not inferior to phosphate-containing products. Tests have shown: PERSIL GOLD PLUS of the phosphate-free formulation is not inferior to either its predecessor or the strongest analogues (its name is not disclosed, as required by professional ethics).

Phosphates

Phosphates are added to washing powders to soften water and enhance the washing properties of surfactants. These substances help surfactants to better penetrate fabric fibers. In combination with phosphates, surfactants increase their destructive effect on the human body.

Phosphates themselves harm the skin and reduce its protective properties. There is research evidence that phosphates disrupt internal metabolism and cause exacerbation of chronic diseases.

Phosphates are banned in many developed countries due to their devastating environmental impact. When they get into water bodies, they significantly spoil the quality of water that people use for drinking and watering agricultural plants.

In washing powders sold on our shelves, the concentration of phosphates is often unreasonably high. For example, “Ushastiy Nyan” and “Sarma” powders contain up to 30% phosphates. So, if you have a choice, it is better and safer to buy washing powders without surfactants and without phosphates.

By release form

Dry

Dry products have several advantages:

  1. All washing machines are designed specifically for this form of release.
  2. They are cheaper than washing gels.

But they have more disadvantages:

  1. They don't rinse well and leave marks on dark clothes.
  2. They have a more aggressive composition.
  3. The drain may become clogged, leading to leaks.
  4. Less effective than their gel counterparts.

Liquid

To the question “Which is better, powder or gel?” There is no definite answer, but lately liquid products have become more popular. They are more concentrated, effective, rinse better, and do not leave streaks on clothes. They can be added directly to the drum, which also affects the quality of the wash. In addition, they are suitable for down jackets and coats with fillers, membrane fabrics (specially marked products).

Capsules

Universal laundry capsules contain several active ingredients at once, which enhances their effectiveness. However, this also increases the cost. The active substances in universal capsules are very concentrated, so they are not suitable for hand washing and baby clothes. Children's clothes should be washed only with special detergents.

Plates

The plates are the latest achievement of scientists who develop the most effective formulas and types of household chemicals. Leaf products are hypoallergenic, safe, economical, versatile, and have antibacterial properties. However, their cost is higher than that of gels or capsules.

Flavors

Almost all washing powders contain fragrances. Flavors with natural ingredients often cause allergic and skin reactions.

Flavors identical to natural ones, as well as artificial ones, are produced chemically. Among them there can be both completely safe and those that can cause metabolic disorders and liver disease. There is evidence that some flavorings have carcinogenic properties.

If the washing powder has a strong smell, and things smell obsessively of fragrance after washing, it is better and safer to refuse such powder.

Helpful information

Tips for purchasing and using washing powders:

  1. The quality of a laundry detergent is a market concept. Each consumer must independently choose a product based on the ratio of price and functionality.
  2. Allergy sufferers are recommended to use either specialized formulations or household chemicals for children.
  3. Optical brightener may be included in the product for colored items, but it should not be present in children's powders.
  4. Products containing enzymes can be used in water no higher than 50 degrees.
  5. You should not blindly trust the manufacturer’s assurances about the safety of its household chemicals. Before purchasing, you need to carefully study the composition.

A lot of useful and important information about washing powder is presented in this section of the site.

Chlorine

Chlorine is a very toxic gas. When washing with chlorinated powder, chlorine is released in the form of gas vapor and can cause severe poisoning. Especially in a small, unventilated room, such as a bathroom.

But even in small amounts, chlorine causes lung irritation. And with frequent use - destruction of lung tissue.

Chlorine in washing powder is very dangerous for people with pulmonary diseases, children and allergy sufferers. Knowing what dangers await us in a box of washing powder, we must take a very responsible approach to choosing a detergent.

About products

As part of a rolling study by Roskachestvo in 2022, powders for washing colored laundry were studied according to 30 parameters of quality and safety.
The rating included products from 31 popular brands among Russians. In 2020, seven products in the rating were re-examined. Most of the products are produced in the Russian Federation (22 brands). In addition, powders from three brands from Germany and one brand each from Australia, Belarus, Belgium, Denmark, the USA and South Korea were tested. The cost of products ranged from 29.99 to 1600 rubles. per unit of product (the study presents products in packages from 350 g to 4 kg). According to the results of laboratory tests, the powder of all brands studied was found to be of high quality and safe. No products with violations were found.

Washing powders “Aist” and Burti COLOR meet both the requirements of current quality and safety standards and the advanced requirements of the Roskachestvo standard. “Stork”, as a domestic product, can qualify for the Russian Quality Mark.

Russian quality system standard

The standard of the Russian quality system for washing powders for colored fabrics, which includes mandatory legal requirements, also establishes advanced requirements for the quality of the powder. According to them, washing powders should not foam too much, generate a lot of dust and leave hardness salts on the heating elements of the washing machine. They must also flawlessly remove protein (blood) and pigment-oil (grease, sweat) stains. Items washed at least 25 times with high-quality powder are not supposed to turn grey, yellow, or lose strength; There should be no pellets on them.

The requirements of the Roskachestvo standard are voluntary and are not mandatory for the manufacturer. If the product meets all the requirements of the Roskachestvo standard, the manufacturer receives the right to apply for product labeling with the Russian Quality Mark.

Recommendations for choosing a safe washing powder

What to wash with? Which washing powder is best?

According to test results, Roskontrol does not recommend AOS / I was born washing powder for washing. The remaining powders that participated in the testing were found to be relatively safe. All powders showed an excess of the residual surfactant level.

To completely protect yourself from the influence of toxic substances, it is better and safer to use natural washing powders.

Russian washing powders BELIVE and CHISTOWN do not contain toxic components. These powders are safe. At the same time, they cope well with dirt.

FOAM PARTY IN THE BATHROOM

What is good for hand washing or, for example, for washing your hands yourself, is very bad and even contraindicated for washing in an automatic washing machine. We are talking about an abundance of foam. Its excess impairs the quality of washing. In addition, there may be so much foam that it flows out of the washing machine drum. And such a “foam party” is not far from a short circuit. That is why machine wash powders most often contain defoamers. By the way, dirty laundry itself is an antifoam agent. So, the dirtier the laundry, the less foam there will be.

The Roskachestvo standard states that no more than 180 millimeters of foam should be released (for products with standardized foaming for front-loading washing machines).

Eco-friendly washing powder BELIVE

Eco-friendly, safe washing powder BELIVE does not contain phosphates, chlorine and other chemical compounds that pollute the environment and cause various diseases. This powder contains soap made from natural fats, soda and citric acid.

The last two components are added in order to use the laundry detergent in any washing machine. BELIVE environmental washing powder perfectly washes colored and white items from most types of natural household dirt and is suitable for frequent washing.

Natural powder BELIVE CHILDREN is an ideal product for washing children's clothes and linen. BELIVE CHILDREN'S powder consists of 100% only natural ingredients: soap, soda and citric acid.

In the production of powder, technologists do not use any chemical compounds, additives or flavors. Therefore, the possibility of an allergic reaction or skin irritation in children is completely excluded. Russian washing powder BELIVE CHILDREN is better and safer than many advertised synthetic washing powders.

The best gels and liquid laundry detergents

Despite the fact that washing gels entered the market relatively recently, they have already earned the love of consumers. In this case, domestic buyers are attracted by:

  • Ease of use.
  • Safety.
  • Effective washing.
  • Economical consumption.
  • Working in cold water.
  • Cap in the form of a dispenser.

As a rule, the formula is based on a composition of surfactants (anionic type). They remove contaminants by reacting chemically with them. In addition, washing gels may contain:

  • Enzymes - remove organic stains.
  • Optical or oxygen brighteners.
  • Zeolates and phosphonates - increase the effectiveness of surfactants and soften water.
  • Anti-scale components.

The company logo is made in white colors. The double-walled screw cap makes it easy to dose the required amount of product. The aroma is pleasant, fresh.

The composition can be safely used for both machine and hand washing. It behaves well on any colored fabrics except wool and silk. The formula is based on the cleansing properties of anionic surfactants, phosphonates, and enzymes. One measuring cap is enough for a full wash cycle.
