Type of baking Oven modes Level Temperature…

Straight lines top and bottom: top and bottom heating

The sign with two lines symbolizes that the heat with this function of the oven comes from both above and below, that is, it is distributed evenly, with soft air circulation, inside the oven, thereby the pie, roast or even soufflé is baked smoothly, without overdrying. Top and bottom heating is a universal function of any oven, although it is the least energy efficient. Energy saving tip for the function: turn off the oven about five minutes before the end of the baking time and use the residual heat.

Mechanical control panel

Conventional rotary knobs are most often found on inexpensive ovens with a small number of modes, as well as on gas models, since they do not have rich functionality. The number of icons here is usually small and it will be easier to understand them. The easiest way to navigate is with the indicators of a timer or thermostat, around which the manufacturer has simply prescribed the heating temperature. You will have to get acquainted with other icons.

The most popular designations:

  • “Light” – turns on the lighting in the oven for visual control of food preparation.
  • “Snowflake” or “Snowflake with drops” – defrosting food.
  • A horizontal line at the top of the pictogram, at the bottom, or simultaneously in two parts of the square - respectively, heating by the upper, lower heating element, or both at once.
  • If the lines are dotted, this is a low-temperature or gentle cooking mode at +70..+120 °C.
  • The fan symbol indicates convection mode, that is, blowing hot air into the chamber. As a rule, it is supplemented by the position line of the working heating element.
  • The wavy line or teeth symbolize the grill. An additional horizontal stripe above the icon is the fast grilling mode, and the convection icon corresponds to the turbo grill program.
  • Double-sided horizontal arrow with a pair of arms – skewer.

When using convection in the oven, it is recommended to choose a heating temperature 20-40 °C lower than in the case of conventional modes.

Sometimes on the oven panels there are simple and recognizable symbols of modes for specific dishes, for example, for baking pizza, bread or pastry. It’s easy to guess the purpose of the selected option, but its characteristics (cooking time and heating temperature) are best clarified in the instructions.

Oven modes

Let's look at the main modes of ovens.

This mode ensures uniform heating of the working chamber before use from above and below. This mode is standard, it is available in almost all models. In this mode, dishes are cooked on one level of the oven. Great for making pies or pizza. In convection mode, the fan and heating element operate, constantly and evenly distributing heat. At the same temperature, you can cook different dishes at the same time. This mode is suitable for baking pies and pastries, using up to three levels at the same time. It is also good to use when preparing frozen dishes. With the help of convection we reduce cooking time.

Top and bottom heating plus convection

In addition to the lower and upper heating elements, there is also an internal fan. Using this mode, you can cook various dishes on two levels, because the heat distribution is not only uniform, but also constant.

Top heating

We complete the preparation of the dish using the upper heating element. Also, with this mode, we can prepare delicious cookies and give the dish a golden brown crust.

Bottom heating

When using bottom heat, we get a delicious pie with a crispy crust, browning it using the “top heat” mode. In this mode, heat comes only from below.

Using the grill mode we can get a delicious dish. With its help, we not only fry the cinnamon, but also brown it, which makes the dish more original. There are such types of grill as small grill, large grill and turbo grill.

Using a small grill you can cook a toaster.

In this mode, heat is radiated from a large grill surface. This mode is suitable for cooking large quantities of thin foods.

Unlike the “large grill” mode, it is intended for large pieces of meat, while frying well and bringing to a golden brown crust. With this mode, there is no need to rotate the spit, because the prepared dish, for example meat, turns out tender and juicy.

Grill with convection

Grill icon on the oven: what it looks like and what it means

The grill icon on the oven is found on many modern gas stoves. How can I find it and what is this function for? Thanks to a good oven, you can prepare delicious food while preserving its beneficial properties.

But this high-tech type of household appliance has quite a few different operating modes. Aristons and Zanussi, Electroluxes and Samsungs have additional icons. They will point to one function or another.

The grill in the oven is a type of built-in element that looks like a tube. A special feature of this system is that it uses an infrared beam. It allows you to heat not only the air in the oven, but also the food itself on the dish.

The grill icon on the oven is far from the only symbol. It is not available on all models of household appliances in this category. When purchasing equipment, pay attention to the presence of a grill.

The oven also contains:

  • upper and lower heating element;
  • elements with convection function;
  • spit.

But the functionality of each oven will depend on what capabilities are provided by the manufacturer.

Grill icon designation

The grill icon on the oven may be shown next to the convection. This function is indicated by a four-leaf flower placed in a circle. This means that in the oven of this sample, uniform air distribution is ensured using a fan. This function allows you to cook frozen foods and baked goods as long as the temperature does not exceed 170 °C.

The convection functions in combination with the grill enhance the heating capabilities of food that is cooked in the oven. The already indicated convection icon is used for designation, only in combination with dotted lines. This means that both the convector and the grill operate in parallel.

The grill icon on the oven is an image of zigzag or italic lines at the top in a square. To heat this element, a heating element is used, which is capable of covering a large area inside the oven. For the camera to work, the oven temperature must rise to 225 °C. With the functions of a large grill, you can successfully cook lasagna and grill meat, so that the dishes are browned and have an even more appetizing appearance.

The grill mode icon in the oven can be an image of this function in combination with the upper heating element. Then you can see a zigzag in the square, where the arc at the top of the figure is also depicted. To heat the oven, use a heating element, which is located in the upper part of the oven. By applying heat directly to the grill, you can ensure that your food remains juicy.

Description of the “Grill” cooking mode

The grill function in the oven, the icon of which is displayed on its front panel, allows you to brown the prepared dish and provide it with a more appetizing appearance. How to use it? Let's look at the features of some functions.

Hot air flow

A basic function that allows you to bake and fry food at the same time. The upper and lower heating system works.

In electric ovens, it allows you to use energy resources economically when you need to quickly cook food.

Used for making toast and flat products.

If there are a lot of products and they have a flat shape, this function can be used to cook them as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Suitable for frying large pieces of meat and poultry using one level. Not suitable for preparing fillets.

Knowing what the grill icon looks like on the oven, you can choose the model of the electric oven. Gas ovens can also be equipped with this function, but they are connected to the hob and cannot be used separately.

Advice from professionals

Which grill icon is on the oven is now clear. But how to use this function correctly? On the grill you can cook chicken and sausage, all kinds of hamburgers, sandwiches and toast. If a person loves barbecue, he will also have the opportunity to cook it in his kitchen. This feature will come in handy when the meat has already been marinated, but the weather suddenly changes your picnic plans.

What is a grill

All ovens operate on the same principle : hot air circulates inside a closed chamber, under the influence of which food is cooked. This process is called convection.

The grill in the oven is an additional heating element. It is usually located at the top of the device and serves to create a higher temperature. Grilled dishes have a crispy crust, while remaining tender and juicy inside.

Reference. The grill function is available on gas and electric ovens.

At the bottom of the gas oven there is a burner for quickly heating the chamber, and at the top there is a grill . Older gas stoves do not have a convection mode, so the oven door has to be opened to create a slight draft. Modern models, in addition to the built-in fan, are equipped with an additional device - a spit. This device allows you to fry food evenly on all sides.

What is convection mode in an oven?

Food cooked in the oven is considered healthier than fried food. Although baked food is not inferior in taste. When choosing a stove, buyers are faced with convection, which increases the cost of equipment. Let's figure out what the convection mode in the oven is, and whether it is possible to do without it.

Convection mode in the oven: what is it?

Thermal convection is the process of moving layers of air of different temperatures relative to each other. In a gas oven, the burner is installed at the bottom. The heated lower layer of air becomes lighter and rises. Cold takes its place.

Electric ranges have several heating elements, but they do not provide even heat distribution in the oven. The main part of the heat remains below. The bottom of the dish (or the bottom crust when baking several at the same time) becomes golden brown or burns. And the top remains raw.

In most conventional ovens, you have to open the door and turn the baking sheet. Cakes and meringues fall off when opened due to sudden temperature changes.

When grilling, you have to constantly turn the spit with meat so that it turns different sides towards the heater.

For better air movement, special holes are left in the baking sheets. If possible, it is advisable to use gratings instead. But even these devices cannot compare with forced heat convection.

Forced convection is carried out by a convector. This is a fan that is most often attached to the back wall of the oven. It speeds up heat distribution. Uniform heating increases the temperature in the deep layers of the product and speeds up its readiness. It becomes possible to simultaneously cook several dishes at different levels. This saves time and energy.

The fan is turned on using separate switches if necessary.

Combinations of convector and heater operation create optimal conditions for various applications:

  1. Convection without heating or with temperatures up to 60 degrees – dough rising, drying, defrosting.
  2. Wet - steaming, baking, sterilizing dishes.
  3. Convection + bottom heating element – pizza, baked goods, pies without a top.
  4. Convection + upper heating element - baking with crust.
  5. Heat convection + both elements – cooking large pieces of meat, tall biscuits. Simultaneous cooking on several baking sheets.

When the convector is turned on, the temperature in the cabinet is 10% higher. Take this into account when installing the thermostat.

Description and designation of the mode in the oven instructions.

Expensive electric ovens are equipped with a turbo grill. When it is turned on, the top heater operates. When the set temperature is reached, it turns off and the fan heater starts. The result is a golden brown crust on top. In addition to meat, pizza is prepared this way.

To avoid drying out food, as well as for steaming, there is a wet convection function. It is not present in many devices. The tile comes with a container into which water is poured. It is attached to the door or back wall. The steam fills the oven through the steam generator.

If your convection stove does not have a wet setting, place a bowl of water on the bottom of the oven. This will prevent your food from drying out.

It is even more difficult to heat an oven on a gas stove evenly than on an electric one. The tightness of the gas lita is low, since combustion products must be removed. Therefore, gas convection stoves are produced. It is turned on in advance immediately with the fan heater, wait for uniform heating of the entire volume, and only after that do they place the dishes with food. It takes longer to cook compared to an electric stove.

Zigzags or triangles on top: top heat and grill function

The grill function is represented by three connected downward-facing triangles or a zigzag line. If you want to roast something extra deep, such as nuts, meat or vegetables, slide the tray onto the top rack of your oven and select the zigzag icon.

Electronic PU touch screen

LED symbols look attractive and intriguing on the screen of such a panel. And all because there can be an unlimited number of them, which is what manufacturers take advantage of, coming up with new designations for the cooking modes being introduced. In addition, the operating features of the sensor allow you to set additional options for individual programs, which are also displayed in the form of icons.

  • “Clock” or two vertical stripes with an arrow pointing to the right indicate that the cooking time can be set for the selected mode. If the arrow points to the left, it means you are required to set the end time for the oven.
  • “Bell” – a sound notification about the end of the program and the readiness of the dish.

The number of various icons on touch panels is really large, so it is better to clarify their decoding in the instructions for a specific oven model. At first, keep it at hand, placing it on the right page; soon you will get used to the new technique and will be able to put the “cheat sheet” away from the rest of the documents.

It is also worth considering the pictograms of ovens with a steaming function. Usually there are 4 options used here:

  • A cloud with three lines – wet steam with 100% saturation.
  • One dash and/or the inscription Low – slight humidity in the chamber.
  • Two stripes, “Med” - medium level of steam generation, ideal for baking.
  • Three dashes, “High” – intense steam generation.

Icons on the oven help you choose the right cooking mode for any dish. Therefore, you should not ignore them, so as not to be disappointed in your kitchen appliances. Study the meaning of the icons and the characteristics of the corresponding programs. And once you become familiar with all the basic functions of the new oven, you will no longer need any tips.

Center fan: air recirculation

The fan icon on your oven indicates the air recirculation function. In this case, the oven uses top and bottom heat, but the heat is distributed more strongly inside by the fan. This allows you to set the oven thermostat 20 degrees lower than using the top and bottom heat icon. The temperature should be the same throughout, allowing multiple sheets to be placed in the oven at the same time. However, the air recirculation function dries out food, so it is not suitable for every cake, not all vegetables and certainly not for meat dishes. The oven does not need to be preheated when recirculating air. This saves energy.

Electric oven Indesit instructions

The various functions of the cooker are controlled using knobs and buttons located on the control panel.

Note: Before first use, we recommend pre-heating the empty oven for half an hour, setting the thermostat to the maximum position. Then open the oven door and ventilate the area to remove any odor from the protective substances used to preserve the equipment during storage prior to installation.

Attention: the grease tray is placed on the lower level of the oven only when using a spit (if equipped). For other types of cooking, never use the lower rack of the oven and do not place anything on the bottom of the oven while it is operating - this may damage the enamel. Place dishes (tins, foil) on a wire rack or baking sheet, inserting them along the guides.

Fan in quadrangle or circle: hot air

The oven uses hot air, which is heated in a radiator and then transported by a fan to the inside of the oven. The radiator in this sign is represented by a quadrangle or circle in which a fan is depicted. Hot air, distributed equally throughout, allows several trays to be baked at the same time. Preheating the oven is not required with the hot air function. This protects the environment and saves you money.

Electromechanics

This control panel allows you to more accurately set and control the operating modes of the oven. That’s why we use our own icons here – in much larger quantities. And although different manufacturers may have their own set of icons, large and most popular brands like Siemens, Bosch, Electrolux and Hotpoint-Ariston chose to simplify the task for their customers and adhere to approximately the same designation system.

  • A horizontal line with a wavy “stream of steam” rising above it (one or three) – maintaining the temperature of ready-made dishes at +60..+100 °C.
  • A pie shaped with three vertical wavy lines is the so-called Gratin mode, which allows you to create a brown baked crust on the surface of the food.
  • The same three waves, but on their own, or the “Sun” icon indicate the drying mode.

In addition, on the panels of multifunctional ovens you can find icons corresponding to such modes as: heating plates before serving, preparing yoghurts and sourdough (“Glass”), proofing yeast dough, sterilizing canned food.

Today, quite a few additional icons have appeared for various convection modes. The following symbols may appear next to the fan:

  • LTC – Slow cooking, which results in juicier, larger roasted cuts of meat.
  • Three drops – additional processing of products with hot steam.
  • “Leaflet” is the so-called eco mode with minimal energy consumption.

We decipher the symbols on the oven panel

There is a standard set of designations for electric oven modes , which are used by leading manufacturers of household appliances: Siemens, Bosch, Electrolux, Hotpoint-Ariston, Kaiser and others.

All conventional symbols are inscribed in a square . The grill mode icon in the oven is zigzags, wavy lines or triangles with the point down, located at the top of the frame.

The stoves of popular models from almost all manufacturers have several “grill” modes.

Normal mode

It is indicated by three triangles . The heat is evenly distributed throughout the chamber, so food can be placed around the entire perimeter of the pan. It is better to cook on the upper levels.

If semi-finished products are laid out on a wire rack or skewered, it is convenient to install a container underneath to drain the fat. This mode is used for baking chicken, fish, and large pieces of meat. The dish tastes like something cooked over coals.

Note! When using this mode, it is recommended to set only the maximum temperature.

Small grill

The icon on the oven is two triangles in a frame . If you need to bake toast or sausages, cook or brown a dish, it is irrational to turn on the oven at full power. When the small grill is operating, only the central section of the heating element is turned on, and the food is cooked at a lower temperature.

Note! The dishes with the preparations are placed directly under the heating element, otherwise the dish will be fried unevenly.

Hans oven icons

A good oven can help you prepare delicious and healthy food. However, you need to understand that this is a high-tech household appliance with many operating modes. You need to be able to read their main and additional icons on modern models in order to competently use a kitchen unit, especially such as Ariston, Zanussi, Samsung, Electrolux.

Designations and explanations

Basic symbols

What can you see on the oven panels? What functions do these pictures represent?

Defrosting

Its designation is a few drops at the bottom of the square, above which hangs the image of a fan. This mode is characterized by the simultaneous operation of the convector with the lower heating element. This mode is used for:

  • rapid defrosting of food at +30°C;
  • maintaining the temperature of prepared dishes;
  • heating them at +40-100°C.

Convection

These icons look like a 4-leaf flower in a circle. The designations indicate that the heat generated during heating mode is distributed evenly by fans throughout its entire volume. A similar purpose is used for preparing frozen dishes and baking at a temperature of +170°C.

Convection and grill

The symbols of this operating mode look like a 4-leaf flower at the bottom of a square with a zigzag line or a dotted line hovering above it. The oven in this mode turns on the grill heating element, which is located at the top of the chamber, while simultaneously activating the fan. This operation of the elements helps to level out the burning of the top part of the prepared products.

Large grill

This feature is indicated by a zigzag or italic pattern at the top of the square. Heating occurs using a grill heating element, which has a large area. The temperature is set within the range of +50-225°C. But the camera will start working after reaching +225°C.

The function is recommended for preparing dishes such as lasagna, fried meat, when you need to achieve a golden brown crust.

Grill and top heating element

To depict this feature, the manufacturers chose icons in the form of a zigzag in the middle of a square with an arc (straight line) at its top. The oven is heated using a heating element located at the top. Due to this, heat flows directly to the grill, helping the product being cooked on it to retain its juiciness.

Traditional mode

The designation has 2 arcs (solid straight lines) looking at each other, located at the top and bottom of the square. These icons indicate that the upper and lower heating elements are operating in the chamber.
