You just need to remember that parquet is often made from special types of wood, which is very valuable and requires respect and careful care as a noble material. A special catch: despite the fact that our modern houses and apartments are much more convenient, practical and comfortable than previous homes, all natural materials do not feel very comfortable in them, especially over time. The fact is that concrete floors, as well as concrete walls, do not “breathe”, but only absorb moisture. This is especially true during the heating season, when the air in the apartment becomes dry even despite the humidifiers that civilized society uses everywhere today.   2. Low resistance to moisture even of expensive products. When leaks or breaks in water supply and heating pipes occur. When moisture can penetrate into the cracks between individual boards, deformation and swelling of individual sections of the floor or boards cannot be avoided. But this drawback is present in any floor coverings that are produced on the basis of wood components. The same reaction of the material is observed when the base is moistened. For example, when laying flooring on the first floor, under the floor there is a damp basement without insulation, and the floor has not been waterproofed. In some cases, even excess water during wet cleaning can harm laminated board flooring;
  3. It makes a lot of noise that disturbs both apartment residents and neighbors. The sounds of shoe heels, objects falling on the floor, and even footsteps in slippers all create noise. Due to its properties, this material is an excellent sound resonator. People sometimes think that if they lay the underlay thicker, the noise will be much less.   5. This material cannot be considered a coating that will last long. The maximum service life is approximately 7-8, at best it will not last longer than 10 years;
  6. Cheap material suffers greatly from mechanical stress and scratches. It can be damaged even when moving felt-lined furniture;
  7. It is difficult to remove colored and grease stains from the surface of such a floor, for this reason it should not be installed in the hallway, in the kitchen, or even in the children's room;
  8. These boards are cold to the touch, which is very unpleasant in winter;
  9. This floor can be very slippery;
  10. A static charge can accumulate in the laminate, which will be inappropriate if there is a lot of computer equipment in a room with such a floor. For this reason, it is better to use a coating with antistatic properties for these rooms;
  11. You should not install massive furniture on a laminate floor. Large weight will interfere with the free expansion of the boards as the temperature in the room increases. This will also cause the appearance of large gaps at the junctions of the boards and the places where they adjoin the walls, and to possible deformation of the entire coating layer;

1. European-made Classen laminate flooring slabs contain up to 10 mg of formaldehyde for every 100 grams of slab.

2. For example, let’s take the Classen Joy 32 class laminate collection. The density of the slab is 870 kg/m3, the weight of the package for covering approximately 2 m2 of floor is about 14 kg.

3. In a 4x5 meter room, 140 kg of material is required. Ceiling height – 3 m.

4. Formaldehyde in this amount of floor is only 14 grams.

5. Even if it is released all at once, its concentration will be no more than 0.23 mg/m3. Unpleasant, but not life-threatening. Moreover, this cannot happen: formaldehyde is released slowly, and the gas that has already appeared is evacuated by normal ventilation.

How to avoid negative factors?

Laying carpets on the floor was invented several thousand years ago, but in the modern age it is not only somehow unfashionable, but also not relevant and impractical. Nevertheless, such flooring is still comfortable, beautiful, pleasant and elegant. And in the twentieth century they came up with carpet - not a piece-made product, but a machine-woven roll fabric that has a certain width and is sold to the consumer by linear meters. Carpet can be cut into any shape for the floor of the room.

the coating consists of a primary base with a fixing layer, a secondary base and pile attached to them. Any layer can be made from any raw material, that is, from both synthetics and natural materials. Only if the carpet is made of synthetic components, will its performance characteristics be significantly better, that is, higher resistance to slipping and shrinkage, higher elasticity, better elasticity, and better heat and sound insulation. The pile can also be synthetic, or it can be stuffed from natural raw materials such as jute, flax, cotton, sisal, coconut, silk and so on. The advantages and disadvantages of combinations of certain materials can be found out by carefully reading the instructions for this or that type of coating; there are a lot of combinations and there is no point in considering them separately. A carpet, especially a continuous one, and even more so a non-removable one (sometimes the carpet is “sewn up” under the baseboards) requires the most careful care , more labor-intensive than all other floor coverings. Dirt and dust particles not only accumulate on the surface, but also penetrate deep inside, clogging between the fibers. It is necessary to regularly use a vacuum cleaner, preferably a washing one, preferably using chemicals that can break down grease and even solid particles of dirt. Only washing vacuum cleaners are not suitable for all types of carpet, also see the operating instructions. And, accordingly, choose the right one for yourself. And be sure to clean carpets twice a year using a dry method using chemicals. So even natural carpets will definitely have to deal with active chemicals.

Criteria for choosing a quality coating

First of all, buy only products from a well-known and trusted manufacturer. Make sure the product packaging is labeled with the specifications of the board and the laminate is labeled accordingly.

Check with the manufacturer and visit the organization’s website, ask where the production workshops are located. In the absence of such information, then most likely you have ended up with a reseller, and the quality of the goods is not guaranteed.

The cost of the material matters; cheap products indicate that it is most likely a fake and its harmfulness is increased. The price may be slightly reduced compared to similar material only if you buy laminate from a domestic manufacturer.

Sometimes it is advised to bend the board, soak it or smell it. These methods will not help you. You will not be allowed to break the new panel, cut off a part and soak it overnight either. Any new product will smell - laminated boards, linoleum and even furniture and natural wood impregnated with bioprotective and antiseptic compounds.

Linoleum

And now the most common material today, which serves as flooring in the vast majority of apartments. This is PVC linoleum , of course. Total chemistry too. It smells like chemicals. However, there is no need to be upset. Almost all polyvinyl chloride coatings can provide the highest level of hygiene in a room. Such floors are very easy to care for, because all types of such linoleum have a protective top layer of polyurethane, from which any stain and any grease can be easily and easily washed off. In addition, PVC linoleum does not rot and has low thermal conductivity.

According to its structure, PVC linoleum is divided into two types: homogeneous and heterogeneous. When cut, homogeneous linoleum appears to us as a homogeneous layer of polyvinyl chloride with various fillers. A protective coating is applied to the top of the layer, for example, a polyurethane film of the RUR type. There is also a TOPLEAN coating that helps housewives fight dust - that is, it does not attract dust at all. Linoleums, which are intended for laying in medical institutions, also have a special coating against bacteria - SOMITIZED. Almost any oily liquid can be spilled on any linoleum, and it will not leave a trace and will be easy to clean up. Additional coatings protect against the formation of dents, increase wear resistance, and facilitate surface care. Heterogeneous vinyl coatings look multi-layered when cut. These types of linoleums not only have high mechanical properties, but also perfectly insulate the room from noise, being excellent sound absorbers. PVC linoleum is produced by thousands of manufacturers, there is huge competition among this material, so colors and textures are updated all the time, you can easily find a suitable option. Another thing is natural linoleum, which is produced in no more than a dozen enterprises in the world. Such a coating has nothing to do with chemistry, but has a lot in common with the highest cost.

Natural linoleums were invented back in the 19th century, using as a basis some kind of ordinary, familiar oilcloth. The material contains natural ingredients such as cork, natural resins, wood flour, linseed and jute oils and some others. Today, all these components are processed and assembled on modern, state-of-the-art equipment in accordance with constantly updated technologies. Natural linoleums are suitable for any children's, health, medical and other institutions, as they necessarily have an antibacterial coating. More precisely, the natural components themselves, processed in production, have bacteriostatic properties. And the top additional water-based ETC coating gives the material new mechanical properties, in particular wear resistance.

Look for information on the Internet... it has different classes of durability/strength, and may differ in thickness. We bought German laminate, strength class 32 (lasts a long time, intended for rooms with high traffic), thickness 12 mm. washable, allowed to wear heels. It has been in service for 3 years and there are no complaints about quality. During this time, no changes occurred, the smell was only after installation (we have a small child, things fall on the floor all the time and toys fly).

The neighbors upstairs also have laminate flooring. I don’t know what condition it’s in, who the manufacturer is, how it serves. But there is a constant noise from footsteps, even when walking in soft slippers. And if someone runs or something falls on the floor, you can hear it on 3 floors.

My floor is covered with a dark wenge material. I've been using it for 2.5 years. Laminate flooring was not cheap for me (of course, I spent less than on a good board), but I regretted not using a parquet board. Do not buy dark colored material. The worst thing is if it has uniform colors - even the slightest dust and dirt become instantly noticeable. The only good thing is that this coating does not allow you to be lazy)). By the way, scratches are clearly visible on a dark color. Laminate, of any strength class, scratches well. But it can withstand heavy furniture and heels well.

I have had blue laminate flooring in my kitchen for 2 years - I chose it to match the color of the cabinets. There was no unpleasant smell from it from the very beginning, but I don’t recommend dropping anything sharp or massive on it - micro-slivers break off from the surface. For housing, products with wear resistance class 31-32 are used; most manufacturers sell this material. There is no point in buying a more durable board if the warranty is longer than 10 years. You are installing the floor not for one year, but for 10-20 years; with a small load it will last much longer. Therefore, you shouldn’t save money by buying dubious material that can harm you and your family?

  3. Decorative coating is a thick layer of paper with a specific pattern;
  4. The protective coating is a layer of synthetic resin that ensures the long life of the floor covering.

If we consider the composition of the laminate as a whole, then 80-90% are wood products. The rest is resins, varnishes, adhesives, which pose a danger.

But in the end, in order to choose the flooring correctly, from an environmental point of view, you need to know one more important detail! Any floor covering, be it synthetic, or natural, or even a floorboard in a country house, is always covered with various protective agents, films, mastics, and so on. These coatings give the coatings - forgive the tautology - additional shine, an aesthetic appearance, but most importantly, they provide additional physical protective properties. And after all, we have direct contact with such protective layers, and not with the raw material itself! It turns out that it is the protective layers that determine the environmental friendliness of a particular material. As you and I can independently understand, natural raw materials and natural materials are much more neutral in nature than chemical compounds. For example, for parquet, the varnish coating will be less favorable than modern mastics based on natural resins. For humans, of course, too. In general, the most environmentally friendly coating material for parquet floors is beeswax. It is several times more expensive, but it is also incomparably safer. Therefore, pay great attention to the protective layer both when choosing a floor covering and when caring for it.
