Do I need to wash Hercules or oatmeal before cooking and why?

Oat flakes are ground oats. The traditional one takes 30 minutes to cook; the “fast” one does not require cooking at all. In the latter case, the flakes are small and extra-thin, and this is not the only difference. There is almost no flour in them and a priori there are no scales. Do I need to wash oatmeal before cooking? In general, no. But sometimes it’s worth worrying about.

Harmful substances in oatmeal

At the same time, oats also contain harmful substances, such as phytic acid, which leads to mineral deficiency - hence vitamin deficiency, anemia, caries; it does not allow enzymes to perform their functions, as a result, food is poorly absorbed; purines, the accumulation of which contributes to gout; lectins that disrupt the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract and other organs. Oats, like other grains, accumulate the microelement strontium, which, when entering the body in excess, displaces calcium from the bones and this leads to dystrophic changes in bones and joints. Therefore, nutritionists do not recommend eating oatmeal every day, but 2-3 times a week.

Benefits of oatmeal

Oatmeal with water is one of the main dishes in a vegetarian’s diet, as it helps improve intestinal motility and also supplies the body with the necessary amount of vitamins to maintain good health and improve well-being.

This dish is distinguished by its high content of vegetable fats and proteins of special value, so it can fully cover the need for them. Avenin and avenalin are substances that contain a complete list of essential amino acids, so they are easily absorbed.

From an energy point of view, oatmeal is called the most valuable product that supplies the body with a full range of nutritional components. It can improve your well-being and give you strength. Let's look at how to properly cook oatmeal in water so that it brings maximum benefit to the body.

Cooking technology

Oatmeal with milk
If you noticed, dear readers, I am writing about how to cook tasty oatmeal, not how to cook it. And all because we won’t cook anything! Our maximum is to bring the water to a boil. If you want, use a regular kettle or even a ladle for this, or if you want, use an electric one.

I suggest steaming the flakes themselves - pour boiling water over them and leave for a while. For me it’s 20 minutes. I know that some leave it (yes, traditional rolled oats) for only 2-3 minutes. But for me it's tough. I like the more subtle option.

But now I pour cream into the steamed porridge and add whatever my heart desires. It turns out mmm... delicious! So, let's learn with step-by-step photos how to cook oatmeal deliciously, so that you really want to eat it!

Oatmeal

The greatest benefits come from eating oatmeal:

  • Cooked from whole grains in water at the rate of 1 cup of cereal to 2 cups of water (boiling water) for crumbly porridges and 3 cups for semi-liquid “spread”, over low heat for 30-40 minutes (a little salt should be added at the end of cooking);
  • From pre-soaked cereal.

Corn porridge with water - 8 delicious homemade recipes

Our ancestors always soaked cereals (as well as legumes) before cooking (including for making wheat vodka), as well as flour (bread was baked from flour using long-cooking fermented sourdough).

Soaking is the easiest way to enrich cereals with enzymes and partially destroy phytic acid (soaking activates the phytase enzyme, which promotes the decomposition of phytic acid), gluten, lectin and other harmful components of the grain. As a result, cereals are digested and absorbed several times better, and their nutritional value increases.

The soaking process is very simple: you need warm water (25-28 degrees) to cover the cereal mass, 1 tablespoon of a natural oxidizing agent (apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, kefir or yogurt, whey or sour milk) for each glass of water and a time of 8-12 hours (it’s better to soak in the evening). Cover everything with film or a lid and place in a warm place.

For maximum benefit, porridge should be boiled in water. When using milk (it contains milk fat), the advantage of oatmeal in its ability to bind and remove cholesterol is lost.

However, there is another opinion that porridge cooked with milk has a wonderful creamy taste and vitamin A, which is important for the body, is well absorbed with milk fats, in addition, the porridge is enriched with protein and calcium.

From oats they produce:

  • Uncrushed;
  • Flattened;
  • Cereals and oatmeal (healthy oat flour in which the grain shell - bran) is preserved.

If whole grains retain all the beneficial vitamins and microelements, then processed cereals are no longer so beneficial for our body. When making flakes, the phytase enzyme is destroyed, so phytic acid remains, and a number of chemicals are also used in the technology.

Therefore, it is recommended to include in a healthy diet porridge made from whole grain cereals, occasionally rolled oats, when the grain is minimally processed (the whole grain is separated from the husk of the top layer, then steamed at high temperature and pressed until plates are formed), while the cooking time of the porridge is reduced.

How to properly rinse oatmeal?

The washing process itself is very simple. The flakes are washed 2 times and left in water for a couple of hours.

If you are short on time, you can add a natural oxidizing agent - a teaspoon of lemon juice. Now all that remains is to rinse well after soaking and you can cook the porridge.

The rinsing rule only works for natural oatmeal that needs to be cooked. You can't do that with instant cereal.

Rinsing oatmeal does not require much effort, but can protect you from many diseases.

We can say that washing and soaking cereals is a means of preventing diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.

There have been a lot of funny food-related prejudices lately. Of course, not all of them can compare with the popular conviction that yeast is a poison invented for the destruction of the Russian people. But in terms of comedy they can easily compete.

2. Then the oats are WASHED and STEAMED. This helps improve storage and eliminate rancidity.

3. During drying, the grain is cleared of its shells and dehulled using special beakers to obtain cereals. After final cleaning, the cereal is steamed again. In this case, partial gelatinization of starch occurs, which contributes to better absorption of the product.

4. The steamed cereal is kept and then flattened into flakes.

There is an alternative - use pre-soaked flakes. At the same time, they retain all the useful properties and acquire no less useful new ones. And they also become very tasty.

“In the last two years, at the initiative of America, oatmeal has appeared on sale, which under the name “Hercules”, thanks to extensive advertising, immediately attracted the attention of consumers. The successful sale of this product caused, of course, counterfeits and imitation. The same cereal appeared on sale under different names, of which “Champion” and “Columbus” should be considered the most famous. This cereal is considered to be particularly nutritious and is recommended to be given to weak patients, children, etc.

The advertised features of this cereal have even given rise to local production, and we know one mill in the Vyatka region that produces the same cereal called “Russian Hercules”, and this cereal, by the way, is no worse than the American one. And if it is unknown to the public, it is only because it is in the hands of few enterprising and inept people.

But what, in essence, is this “Hercules”? These are roasted, then steamed oats, not so much ground as torn. The writer of these lines tested “Hercules” on people who suffered from indigestion and lack of appetite, and recommends preparing “Hercules” as follows:

Take three glasses of water for half a glass of cereal and boil. Then do not eat the cereal, but drink the decoction, which is obtained in the form of a whitish liquid. It also serves to quench your thirst, so you can pour it into a decanter and drink it whenever you want. My results have always been good.

So, this name completely entered our lexicon already at the end of the 19th century. Thus, the encyclopedic dictionary of Brockhaus and Efron (1890-1907) gives the following definition:

Hercules (Hercules), 1) an ancient Italian deity, early identified with the Greek hero Hercules (see). - 2) Austrian, constellation of the northern sky. — 3) Hercules beetle, Dynastes hercules, from the group Dinastidae family. lamellar (Lamellicornia).— 4) Thin oatmeal, special preparation, nutritious substance, for children and convalescents.

In general, eat, children, rolled oats, you will get biceps and abs.

Everyone knows that oatmeal porridge is healthy and nutritious, but do you know what else is interesting about oatmeal? Let's talk!

Oatmeal is now considered a healthy and popular product among lovers of a healthy lifestyle, but previously it was not at all like that. Oats were very cheap, they were fed to livestock and people were ridiculed for eating oatmeal. This was the case until the 19th century, when oatmeal was invented. They became easier to transport and store, the price of cereals increased and porridge became popular. And when it became known about its beneficial properties, they forgot about ridicule of ordinary people: now oatmeal is popular even among the stars.

According to the tabloids, oatmeal is included in the diet of world-famous models and actresses. Aishwarya Rai, Christy Turlington, Demi Moore, Elizabeth Hurley - this is not a complete list of lovers of oatmeal, granola and muesli. To diversify oatmeal, many of them add fruits, seeds, grains, and nuts to it - this makes the porridge both tastier and healthier.

Oatmeal gives energy and a long feeling of fullness, good health, maintains a beautiful complexion, good condition of nails and hair. The calorie content of rolled oatmeal is 352 kcal per 100 grams.

A bit of a strange statement, right? However, it is true: let's take a closer look.

At the market or in the store you can find three types of oatmeal: oatmeal, rolled oats and instant oatmeal. All of them differ from each other in the processing method and, accordingly, in the cooking time, as well as in beneficial properties.

Oatmeal is an unrefined, steel-cut oat grain that is loaded with fiber and nutritional benefits. Due to minimal processing, cereals are considered the healthiest oatmeal product. However, this processing makes the cereal not very convenient for those who do not have time to cook porridge: it takes from 40 to 60 minutes.

Hercules is a processed oat grain. It is cleaned, sanded, cut in half and flattened. With this processing method, some beneficial substances are lost, but only partially - rolled oats are only slightly inferior to oatmeal in terms of benefits. It cooks much faster than cereal; it only needs to be cooked for 15-20 minutes.

Instant oats don't need to be cooked and are ready in 3 minutes. Oat grains for such flakes are thoroughly cleaned, steamed, ground and crushed. Because of this, most vitamins are destroyed, and the amount of starch, on the contrary, increases. When you eat porridge for a minute, starch is absorbed by the body much faster, then it turns into sugar, which, in turn, turns into fat.

That is why instant oatmeal is not recommended for those with diabetes. If you want to lose weight, it’s also better for you to give up instant porridge in favor of rolled oats.

Sometimes, when cooking rolled oats, an unpleasant “dirty” foam forms on the surface, and the water itself becomes cloudy, and most often this happens with loose oatmeal. Therefore, a logical question arises: is it worth rinsing the flakes before cooking?

Many housewives wash the oatmeal - this way you can remove husks, dust and excess flour, and the finished porridge will be lighter and more pleasant in appearance. Others simply skim off the foam and husks that float up during the cooking process. This process does not affect the benefits of oatmeal in any way, so it’s up to you to decide. However, if you want to make the porridge more appetizing and get rid of the remaining husks, it is better to rinse the rolled oats and squeeze out the water well.

Surely you have encountered the fact that oatmeal turns out to be similar to “muddy porridge”: it becomes slimy, tasteless and completely unappetizing in appearance. This is what happens if you cook it incorrectly. Let's look at the most popular mistakes in cooking oatmeal.

  • cook oatmeal in water? Replace it with milk. This is worth doing for several reasons: firstly, the water may make the porridge too sticky, and secondly, in order for the porridge to satiate you for a long time, you need protein, which is contained in milk. If you are lactose intolerant, add seeds and nuts to the prepared porridge.
  • add the cereal at the right time. Do you want the creamy, creamy texture of your porridge? Add cereal to boiling milk. Want your oatmeal to keep its shape? Place it in cold milk.
  • add salt. Even if you are preparing sweet porridge, a pinch of salt will make it much tastier. And what’s most important is that with salt, the porridge will not be sticky and unpleasant in appearance.
  • stir the porridge more often. This will break up the bubbles that form during the boil, which will help maintain its appetizing appearance. Stirring will also help release excess starch, giving the porridge a nice texture.
  • cook until finished. If the porridge is undercooked, it will turn out tough, with a sticky, unpleasant texture. In order for the oatmeal to become tender and creamy, it needs to absorb the liquid - this will take 10-15 minutes. At the very end, add a piece of butter to the porridge and let it brew for a few minutes.

If you are not a porridge fan, it doesn’t matter - use oatmeal in a different way:

  • for example, prepare homemade granola according to our recipe, add homemade yogurt to it - and a healthy breakfast is ready.
  • For a healthy snack, you can make oatmeal bars - granola bars. Add your favorite nuts, dried fruits, honey and spices to them: such a snack will be much healthier than chips or chocolates.
  • bake oatmeal cookies according to our recipe. Add chocolate, vanilla and cinnamon to create a soft yet crunchy dessert that the whole family will love.
  • add oatmeal to a smoothie, bake pancakes or a pie with it - there are many options for preparing dishes with oatmeal. Experiment and you will definitely find a recipe that you like.

Oatmeal can be used not only as food:

  • Oatmeal neutralizes unpleasant odors in the refrigerator. Place the cereal in an open container and place it in the refrigerator - it will absorb odors.
  • According to a dermatologist from the British Skin Foundation, oatmeal helps prevent sunburn. Summer is coming, be prepared for it: if you spent too much time in the sun and got sunburned, grind half a cup of oatmeal, add it to a quarter glass of milk and gently apply it to the burns. This will help moisturize the skin, relieve itching and inflammation.

The main question is how to cook oatmeal. In practice, several cooking methods are used - some are simple, some are more complex, in any case, it is necessary to take into account a number of rules that will help deal with the problem.

  • Choose large flakes - they actually cook very conveniently, without gathering into a single mass, providing the finished dish with an exquisite taste.
  • It is advisable to rinse the flakes before starting the cooking process. This will destroy debris and harmful particles that could get into the cereal during the production process.
  • You need to eat porridge with various additives - you can put nuts, honey, fresh berries and fruits in it. In this case, oatmeal will become a complete dish in terms of the content of essential vitamins and microelements.
  • Do not overcook. Oatmeal, like any other, requires a certain preparation mode, so not finishing/overcooking it means ruining the taste and nutritional properties.
  • Always eat freshly prepared porridge - a heated product loses its properties.

    Dirty cereal

    So, we have dealt with “flour” - you should not be afraid of it, on the contrary, it is half the benefit. What about the hulls left in cheap oatmeal? Nutritionists claim that this is a very useful component for the intestines, it acts like bran, cleanses the digestive tract... But let's be honest.

    You can’t serve this dish to children, and picking out scales from between your teeth yourself is unpleasant, and they don’t add any appetizing value. But this does not mean that the flakes urgently need to be washed. Peels are lighter than water. Measure a glass of flakes, fill it with 1.5 glasses of water - and use a slotted spoon to remove unwanted particles; they will float up.

    Why you shouldn't wash your oatmeal

    We are characterized by suspiciousness, and therefore even flakes, that is, grain that has gone through many treatments, causes concern in us: where did they lie, what kind of dust is on them, what kind of turbidity is in the water in the pan?

    In fact, dust is a valuable meal. When we pour water over the flakes, the flour floats to the surface and becomes cloudy. However, it is precisely this that is the source of gluten, which forms an enveloping, mucus-like mass that is nourishing and protects the stomach from erosion. It makes oatmeal as healthy as possible, so rinsing the oatmeal until clean water is a harmful task.

    Please note that expensive “extra” flakes do not contain this “powder”. The porridge turns out to be more “textured” and does not become sour...

    But there is almost no benefit left in it.

    I don't like weaklings

    When and to whom does it make sense to wash cereals? If you want to enjoy cereal as a delicious dessert or breakfast cereal, of course, flour will interfere. It makes the porridge homogeneous, jelly-like, and unaesthetic. In this case, you can rinse the flakes until clean and only then cook them, add berries, honey and nuts - a delicious dessert for the whole family.

    However, there is a recipe that allows you to get an aesthetic porridge without fighting with useful powder.

    Oatmeal: beneficial properties

    Despite the calorie content of this product, it can confidently be called dietary. Why? Nutrition experts recommend: at least a couple of times a week, you need to spend fasting days on grains boiled in water - without adding milk, butter, or sugar. You can wash down such a simple dish with fruit infusion or weak tea.

    We remind you that this measure can be demanded and taken into account only by those who are confident in their own resilience, good health, and the absence of problems with the gastrointestinal tract. Fasting days can pose a serious danger: do not forget about contraindications and do not take risks if you feel that this method is not for you. Oats are a good helper for people who have difficulty falling asleep at night.

    The fact is that it contains vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), which acts as a mild sleeping pill - it causes the production of serotonin. In addition, porridge with water two hours before bedtime helps to calm down and set the mood for rest also because it promotes the synthesis of melatonin.

    • The dish we are talking about in this article is also an excellent antidepressant. The anti-stress effect provides a high content of B vitamins, which are responsible for strengthening the nervous system, eliminating problems with falling asleep, as well as for perfectly clean skin, silky and healthy hair.
    • What are the benefits of oatmeal and is it healthy at all? Scientists have proven that this porridge is a real find for those who want to be known as an intellectual or simply a smart guy. Regular consumption of grains boiled in water or milk leads to increased brain activity. So if you want to raise a genius, give your child healthy breakfasts.
    • Miracle grains not only prevent you from getting hungry for a long time, but also prevent cholesterol from entering the bloodstream and turning into plaques on the walls of blood vessels.

    It turns out that our health, brain function, cardiovascular system and gastrointestinal tract depend on choosing the right dish to start the day. This is why oatmeal with water or low-fat milk for breakfast in the morning is useful - it is rich in vitamins, perfectly satisfies hunger, prevents your appetite from running wild on the way to work, and cleanses the intestines. This is a true force of nature at work.

    Soaking oats

    Some housewives, after soaking the cereal, grind it in a blender with a small amount of water (3-4 tablespoons), then the cooking time for the porridge is several minutes. Many people diversify the taste of oatmeal by adding fruits and berries, cottage cheese and fruits, raisins, a little honey or cinnamon.

    Another well-known option is to soak the rolled oats in the evening (pour 1 cup of flakes into 2 cups of cold water), and in the morning add a little more water and cook for 3 minutes - you get a tender porridge. You can prepare rolled oats with kefir: in the evening in 1 tbsp. kefir (yogurt or yogurt) add 1.5-2 tbsp. l. rolled oats, stir, and in the morning add your favorite toppings to taste.

    Why wash oatmeal

    It is believed that if you rinse the cereal thoroughly before cooking, the cloudy foam will disappear and the porridge itself will not be sticky and sticky, the flakes will look better, and exfoliated scales and debris will not appear among the grains themselves. What actually creates turbidity is the small amount of flour that is created during the making of the product (this kind of flour is not found in bags of expensive brands of cereal and there is much more of it in mid-price and low-priced packages), as well as the gluten that is created when cooking from this flour and softened cereals.

    What grains can be soaked instead of boiled?

    Some grains do not even need to be cooked. This dish is called “live porridge”. In their raw form, many grains cannot be chewed, but soaking in water allows them to obtain a soft and edible consistency.

    What porridges can you not cook:

    1. Buckwheat is the undisputed leader among live cereals. Fill it with boiled water and leave for 5-8 hours. You can easily provide yourself with a ready-made breakfast.
    2. It’s not for nothing that oatmeal is found in muesli mixtures: it is well absorbed by the body in the form of flakes. It is enough to soak oatmeal for 8 hours, then add honey, jam or other goodies.
    3. It is also worth adding cereal mixtures, which are sold in the form of flakes.

    The Polzateevo magazine takes care of your health and reminds you that you need to soak not only cereals, but also bran. Oat, wheat and other varieties are not inferior to whole grains in terms of phytic acid content.

    A little about the harmful properties

    The concept of harm in this product is relative. There is a category of people for whom it simply will not suit:

    1. This applies to patients with type 2 diabetes due to its high carbohydrate content.
    2. For those who experience frequent intestinal disorders (diarrhea).
    3. Allergy sufferers who suffer from sensitivity to oat products.
    4. People with gluten intolerance (celiac disease) and low cholesterol.
    5. Oatmeal contains purine compounds (purines), which block the kidneys from excreting uric acid. Once deposited in the body, it can cause gout (arthritis) if consumed continuously in very large doses.

    And, of course, we should not forget that there should be a reasonable measure in everything.

    Fabric face mask “Moisturizing + Freshness”, Garnier contains hyaluronic and P-anisic acids, as well as tea leaf extract, which provide protection against the negative effects of the environment. The mask intensely moisturizes and makes pores less noticeable.

    Editorial opinion. The fruit acids of cranberry and grapefoot juice, together with parsley, not only whiten and exfoliate the skin, but also promote tissue regeneration. But the cognac in the recipe is very confusing - alcohol does not have the best effect on the skin, especially age-related ones.

    Kiehl's Gently Exfoliating Body Scrub Coriander contains coriander, a close relative of parsley, that helps exfoliate and soften skin. It is helped by aloe and chamomile extracts, which are responsible for moisturizing.

    Oatmeal recipe

    Oatmeal does not have a distinct taste, so it quickly gets boring. To diversify the menu, you need to add various tasty and healthy additives, usually sweet. They give the porridge a special taste and make the menu varied. Whole grains are considered the healthiest, then crushed grains, then unprocessed cereals, and processed instant cereals close the health rating.

    Lazy oatmeal

    Lazy oatmeal is a great breakfast or dinner option. You will need:

    • 0.5 cups of cereal or unprocessed cereal;
    • A jar of low-calorie yogurt;
    • 1.5 glasses of milk.

    All ingredients are thoroughly mixed in a bowl, then covered with a lid and put in the refrigerator. For greater sealing, it is recommended to place the workpiece not in a bowl, but in a jar with a tight-fitting lid. The porridge will be ready in 4-8 hours, depending on the grain. It is best to put this porridge in the refrigerator in the evening so as not to waste time preparing breakfast. Another option is to set it in the morning and get a ready-made dinner in the evening.

    For breakfast

    Instant oatmeal flakes are good for breakfast - just pour boiling water over them in the proportion of 1 cup per serving of porridge from a bag. You can sweeten or salt the porridge as you wish, add raisins, fruits or dried fruits. To get milk porridge, you can boil milk in advance and brew the porridge with it. If you don’t have time for constant stirring, you can add cold milk to the already brewed hot porridge.

    For weight loss

    For a fasting day on oatmeal, water porridge made from whole grain cereals is suitable. It is prepared as simply as possible - cook the porridge with a small amount of salt (no more than a pinch per 500g of the finished product). Any method is suitable for cooking - a saucepan, a slow cooker, a microwave. You can't add anything except salt. You should also not brew oatmeal, especially with additives.

    The amount of porridge on a fasting day is 500-600 mg, divided into 3 meals. No other foods are allowed, but you can and should drink water. You can immediately prepare oatmeal for the whole day - as much as you need, or cook it in separate portions so that it is fresh. Such a fasting day is acceptable no more than once a month.

    With dried fruits

    For sweet porridge with raisins and dried apricots you need:

    • 1/3 cup oatmeal or raw oatmeal;
    • 1 glass of milk;
    • 30g each of raisins and dried apricots (you can take other dried fruits to taste);
    • 1 tablespoon sugar;
    • Butter.

    The ingredients need to be prepared - rinse and sort the grains, rinse the dried fruits and cut them into convenient pieces (except for raisins). The milk is boiled in a tall saucepan with a thick bottom. When it boils, add cereal and dried fruits, reduce the heat and stir the porridge constantly. Sugar is added 5 minutes after the cereal and the dish is cooked for another 10 minutes. Serve hot.

    With fresh berries

    Fresh berries are placed in ready-made hot porridge. Oatmeal is cooked in water or milk according to any convenient recipe, then 4-5 fresh berries are added to 1 serving. After this, the porridge is immediately served and eaten. Oatmeal with fresh berries should not be stored.

    With honey

    Honey is a natural sweetener; fructose gives it a sweet taste. Therefore, even patients with diabetes can take a small amount of honey. The porridge is boiled in water and lightly salted. Add 1 teaspoon of honey per serving to the finished dish. If desired, you can add dried fruits and berries, but not sugar.

    With apple and cinnamon

    Porridge with apple and cinnamon can be prepared with water or milk. After the liquid boils, add cereal and ground cinnamon to it and sweeten it slightly (0.5 teaspoon of sugar per glass of water). Add chopped fresh apple to the prepared porridge. If desired, you can use honey instead of sugar, then it is placed in the finished porridge in front of the apples.

    With meat

    For nutritious porridge with meat you will need:

    • 2.5 cups oatmeal;
    • 200g chicken fillet;
    • 2 onions;
    • 1 carrot;
    • Salt, spices, roots to taste;
    • Vegetable oil;
    • Water.

    Cooking starts with meat. It is cut into cubes and fried in a frying pan. 1 onion and carrot are fried along with it. When the onion turns golden, add 1.5 cups of water and simmer until tender.

    At the same time, make broth for the porridge. For a liter of water you will need a second onion, salt, spices and roots. Pour the flakes into the broth and cook until tender. Then mix the porridge and meat and serve.

    Oatmeal is a universal porridge. It is suitable for weight loss and weight gain, in a therapeutic diet and in the diet of a busy person.

    Garbage

    Most manufacturers monitor the production process well, and as such, no debris is found in the oatmeal; sometimes flakes appear in the cereal - small husks, forcing housewives to think about pre-washing. Some housewives prefer not to rinse the flakes, but to fill them with water and remove the floating husks using a slotted spoon or spoon. But this is not particularly necessary, since the scales that come across contribute to the mechanical grinding of food in the stomach and its passage through the intestines in the future, cleansing the intestines of stagnant masses and toxins.

    But this method is not suitable when preparing cereal for small children, or if you are very irritated by flakes getting stuck between your teeth from time to time. Usually there is more waste in products of cheaper brands; if there is too much of it, then you should switch to a more expensive product.

    Thus, it is worth washing oatmeal if:

    • I would like to present the porridge in its best form, and not in a boiled-over-steamed state
    • Budget brand of oatmeal or oatmeal contains too much flour or husk
    • Breakfast being prepared for the child
    • No desire to eat porridge that is slimy or contains garbage
    • I would like to use the cereal as a dry breakfast or dessert with dried fruits

    In this case, you should rinse the oatmeal several times under running water until the turbidity disappears, cook according to the instructions and then add nuts, honey, dried berries and fruits. However, do not forget that the benefits from your favorite breakfast will be slightly less.

    Not recommended

    It is not recommended to use oatmeal and instant porridges, which require boiling water and 1-5 minutes of cooking. Such cereals contain nothing but empty carbohydrates and are only suitable for a quick snack, for example, on the road. In addition, artificial additives are added to instant oatmeal - sweeteners, flavors and other chemicals.

    It is also not recommended to consume muesli, in which the grains are subjected only to strong dry heat and pressure, as a result of which many of the valuable components of the grain are destroyed and therefore they are difficult to digest.

    What grain to take

    There are several types of flakes depending on the degree of crushing:

    1. “Extra” No. 1. They have the highest fiber content and are made from whole grains.
    2. “Extra” No. 2. Their size is smaller than the previous ones. Made from cut grains.
    3. “Extra” No. 3. They are smaller in size, do not require long cooking, and are suitable for baby food.
    4. "Hercules". On the outside they are smooth, pre-treated with steam. There is much less benefit in such a product.
    5. Rolled cereal. The grains are driven through grooved rollers, so they cook faster. Subject to heat treatment.
    6. Uncrushed grains. They are the most useful, but are rarely commercially available.

    There is also ground oatmeal, which takes only half an hour to cook. It looks about the size of a poppy seed. Some cereals don’t need to be boiled, but simply pour in milk or kefir and let it brew. Instant flakes, which swell and lose their shape, are not suitable for these purposes.
