It’s rare that fashionistas are satisfied with the standard size of the clothes they purchase. Even if it completely follows the contours of the figure, it does not always satisfy the girl’s needs in terms of length. Reducing the bottom of a product is not at all difficult, but the possible shortening option directly depends on the type of clothing and the fabric from which it was sewn. T-shirts and dresses purchased in a store are hemmed using a cover-stitching machine, which not everyone can afford. But there are little tricks with which you can sew a T-shirt with your own hands. In some cases, it is not at all necessary to unpick the model for this.
Clothing repair. How to cut a T-shirt to length
T-shirt length is a common problem for both women and men. It happens that the width of a T-shirt suits you, but the length turns out to be too big. Usually this happens to people of short stature. In this case, you need to shorten the T-shirt in length.
This is definitely not worth doing manually, as the knitwear stretches along the bottom, and hand hemming will not last long. Ideally, this operation is performed using a special stitching machine, but not everyone has one. It is also missing from my arsenal of sewing equipment. I only have a sewing machine and an overlocker. But even with them you can hem a knitted T-shirt very simply.
Many people are afraid to take on work with knitwear and this is completely in vain. If you know some points, then such an operation will not seem so complicated.
First, you need to decide how long you need to shorten the T-shirt. In this example, it was 5 cm. Then pin the T-shirt along the shoulder seams, folding it in half, along the bottom of the armhole under the sleeve and lay the product on the table. Flatten it so that there are no creases anywhere.
Pierce the bottom of the T-shirt with needles, draw a new length taking into account the hem of about 2-2.5 cm and trim. In this case, the bottom of the T-shirt is not flat, but slightly sagging. If you need to cut the T-shirt evenly, then draw a perpendicular line to the middle of the T-shirt. It is better to do this using a ruler - a square.
Then I overlocked the bottom and ironed it.
After that, I measured a distance of 2 cm from the cut and drew a new bottom line. I pierced the fold line with needles and basted the seam allowance slightly below the overlock stitch.
She pulled out the needles and ironed the seam allowance.
In order to hem knitwear on a machine, I use special needles for knitwear or stretch materials. I like this brand of needles the most. They are of very high quality and have shown themselves to be excellent in working with knitted items.
My machine has a special stitch for such operations, but I use it in the case of looser knitwear, when the stitch configuration is less noticeable. Here I was dealing with a smooth version of knitwear, so I chose a regular straight stitch.
It is better to lay it along the front side, having previously measured the length from the fold line so that the stitch covers the overlock seam from the inside. That is, a little less than 2 cm.
In order for the stitch to lie flat and have a small stroke as a result, during the operation it is necessary to slightly pull the fabric behind the foot. It's behind, not in front. If you do this slowly, the stitching will turn out smooth and uniform.
After this, you can remove the basting and finally iron the seam allowance along the bottom. This is what the T-shirt looked like after the repair. The long T-shirt became a little shorter.
If you master the simplest operations, then repairing clothes will not be anything daunting for you. With a little practice and time, you can save your family budget thanks to your new skills.
I will be glad if this lesson is useful to you.
Share it with your friends and subscribe to the site news so that you have the opportunity to receive useful and interesting letters from me!
I wish you all success in mastering new skills and successful repairs!

Sewing a T-shirt
If none of the above methods suits you, in order to reduce your T-shirt size yourself, you can try sewing the item. This will be a longer method and you will need to spend a fair amount of time and effort to complete it.
So, to ensure the result is exactly what you dream of, follow these instructions:
- Where should I start? Well, of course, from trying it on and determining how big the thing is for you. Immediately mark with chalk or soap the areas that need to be sutured. And also, for convenience, you can set control points.
Important! Control points are located at the armhole, at the waistline and at the bottom of the product.
- To avoid spending a huge amount of time ripping things apart, cut off the overlock stitch that runs along the edges of the cuts. But don't overdo it and don't cut too much, strictly 0.6-0.7 cm per line
- Next, carefully lay out the T-shirt and completely mark the stitching line, and then align the opposite edges of the T-shirt in order to draw the line evenly and after stitching the item will be symmetrical on both sides.
- Use pins to gather up the fabric that you will need to remove. Once all the lines have been aligned and marked, make a seam allowance of approximately 0.7-1 cm.
- Then use scissors to trim off the excess fabric, taking into account the seam allowance. Take this into account both near the waist and near the shoulder area. When sewing the sleeves, follow the same steps. Align the face of the T-shirt with the sleeve and pin the sleeve, starting at the shoulder area and below.
- Start stitching from the lowest point of the product, moving to the sleeve - repeat this on both sides. Once you have sewn everything together, you should be left with 4 overlock stitches that can be trimmed or sewn inside the product.
Important!
Since it is quite a painstaking, difficult and precision-requiring job to reduce the size of a T-shirt, we recommend starting with methods that are much faster and easier.
Hemming along the length
In some cases, the product fits perfectly, but you are not satisfied with its length. There is nothing easier than taking a dress or a T-shirt to a tailor, but it is not much more difficult to do the work yourself. You can reduce the length using a sewing machine or using the old time-tested method - manually.

- The bottom of the T-shirt is folded along a pre-marked line and it is determined at what distance from the edge the seam will be made and basted.
- Place the garment to be shortened under the foot of the sewing machine, wrong side up.
- Align it so that the left needle is located at the very edge of the hem.
- Place a stopper and sew in a circle with a hidden seam, trying to avoid pulling.
- They tie knots and hide the threads.
Manually
In the absence of a sewing machine and the desire to seek help from a specialist in the studio, the least that can be done to reduce the length of the product is to figure out how to hem a T-shirt by hand.
If the knitwear is dense enough and not prone to unraveling, you can leave it alone; if there is a risk that the knitted weave may “work,” it is better to process the edge with an overlocker.
After shortening, the bottom of the T-shirt is hemmed by hand using a hidden cross stitch, which is popularly called a “goat”.
This is approximately how the Kozlik seam is made
This is done as follows: with a needle, grab one or two threads of the fabric from above and below from the cut of the allowance
It is important to carefully ensure that the stitches are not visible from the outside. The distance between the thread grips of the fabric should be about 1 cm
Useful tips
Sometimes creative people, inspired by the huge number of beautiful pictures on the Internet, forget about some important circumstances. Before you start cutting fabric, make sure that:
- you know exactly how to achieve the desired result;
- the chosen option will look good taking into account the characteristics of your body;
- you have suitable underwear for the model you are looking for.
It won't be very cool if you make a whole series of horizontal cuts across your entire back, but you don't have a bra in the right color. Or the created pattern of holes will reveal to the world, for example, a not very beautiful scar left over from the times when you mastered a bicycle as a child.
It’s easy to make something completely new and spectacular out of an old T-shirt using scissors. Try it yourself!
T-shirt cutting technology
In order to cut a T-shirt evenly and beautifully, scissors alone will not be enough.
What tools will you need for your work:
- T-shirt;
- scissors, preferably not dull;
- sewing pins;
- a thin dry piece of soap or chalk for marking on fabric;
- ruler or centimeter;
- cardboard for transferring the drawing.
Secrets of neatness
In order for the cuts to be neat and the design not to come out, you need to work exclusively with well-sharpened objects. Check that the scissors cut well and that the pins are not rusty.
Important! In order for the design to transfer smoothly, the T-shirt must lie neatly, and you can also iron it so that it does not come apart in the future.
Which T-shirts can't be cut?
T-shirts made of silk, lace and satin are very difficult to cut, much less to make any patterns on them. Such fabrics will simply be in puffs and nothing beautiful will come of it. Therefore, before you transform your favorite but old thing, make sure that this transformation will not harm it.
Dryer and washing machine
Don't forget the machine washing and drying method. It is the simplest and does not require any special knowledge. To achieve the desired result, you must perform the following steps:
- Wash items in hot water.
- Dry the T-shirt in the dryer.
It is worth understanding that the shrinkage of fabric fibers does not occur from the high temperature of water or steam. The shrinkage effect is achieved while mixing the product inside the drum of the machine. The shrinking process for a cotton T-shirt is even simpler. It is enough just to place the product in the vessel. Fill the vessel with boiling water. Leave for some time and send to dry. Cotton shrinks immediately after contact with hot water, so there is no need to spin the fabric in the drum of the machine.
How to reduce a T-shirt size by washing
The easiest way to reduce the size of a T-shirt is to machine wash it in hot water. If the shrinkage required is small, it is enough to set the temperature to just above 40 degrees. If the item needs to be made significantly smaller, it is strongly recommended to wash the T-shirt at +90 degrees.
Knitted T-shirts shrink well when washed
Thus, if an item purchased or given as a gift does not fit, do not rush to make home clothes out of it. Just a little effort, and it will be quite decent to leave the house. And if you don’t feel like sewing at all, you can always turn to a professional seamstress for help, who can do everything you need quickly and efficiently.
Boiling
To find the desired T-shirt size using boiling, you should follow the following procedure:
- A sufficient amount of water is boiled in an iron basin or saucepan.
- A large or stretched T-shirt is immersed in boiled water.
- The T-shirt should be soaked in boiling water for 20 minutes.
- Remove the T-shirt from the water, wring it out and dry it.
It is worth remembering that the size of its shrinkage depends on when the T-shirt was immersed in boiling water. So if you lower the T-shirt immediately after the water boils, it will shrink to size 1 or 2. If a T-shirt is placed in water that cools for 5 minutes after boiling, the T-shirt will shrink by half a size. For minimal shrinkage of the product, boiling water should cool for 15 to 20 minutes. It is also worth remembering that the longer cotton is soaked, the more it shrinks. Don't over-shrink the T-shirt. If you make it small, you will no longer be able to stretch it enough and perform the shrinking procedure again.

What wardrobe items go with cut-up T-shirts?
Original T-shirts go with almost any style. This T-shirt can be worn under jeans or light-cut skirts.
Important! However, if you decide to wear such a thing under a formal business suit or to an important meeting, then you shouldn’t. Such things simply won’t work and people may simply not understand.
But if you like to wear a classic style on your free days, then such T-shirts can easily be combined with cropped pants or long stretch skirts - this is simply the squeak of fashion among young people.
Washer/dryer
The method of reducing clothing size using a washing machine and dryer should not be forgotten. After all, this is truly a method that requires absolutely no effort from you and helps you achieve the desired size of your item. All you need to do is carefully follow the instructions below:
- Wash items in the washing machine in hot water.
- According to technologists, shrinkage of items does not occur due to the temperature of the water during washing or hot steam during drying, but during mixing inside.
- Next, leave the T-shirt in the dryer and dry it thoroughly.
- If you were not able to achieve the result the first time, then repeat the procedure again.
How to hem a T-shirt at the shoulders
Sewing a T-shirt at the shoulders is easy, since you don’t even have to rip the fabric.
Hemming steps:
- Mark the length you need from shoulder to collar;
- Draw a line with chalk or soap to the end of the armpit line.
- Fold the T-shirt in half.
- Trim off excess fabric.
- Pin the sleeve, front and back that you cut off.
- Sew these parts and press thoroughly.

Hot water
If your T-shirt is made of cotton fabric, then using hot water you can easily solve your problem and reduce the T-shirt to the size you need.
Important! Natural fibers can shrink when exposed to hot water, so this method is very effective and, importantly, cheap.
Follow a clear procedure to achieve the desired result:
- Pour water into a large saucepan and boil it.
- Next you need to lower the thing into this water, but be careful here:
- To reduce a T-shirt by 1-2 sizes, dip it in water immediately after boiling.
- To reduce by 0.5-1 size, dip the T-shirt 3-5 minutes after boiling.
- To reduce by ¼ - ½ size, wait 15 minutes before soaking the item.
- Leave the item in hot water for 20 minutes. But do not forget that the longer the T-shirt is in boiling water, the more it will shrink.
- Pour out the water, wring out the T-shirt and let it dry.
Important! When working with boiling water, be extremely careful not to harm your health or get burned.
Technological features of the T-shirt sewing process
In structurally simple things, the main thing is a good cut and neatly executed seams. When comparing T-shirts and T-shirts, it is obvious that some fit perfectly and hide disproportion. This is a thing made using technology.
The need to create a pattern
Those who know how to sew do not throw away clothes with a good cut, using them as patterns. It is better to draw them out of dense polyethylene - it is convenient to lay them out on the things to be sutured. This way you can see the design and all the design features of the modernized T-shirts. You can also use ready-made patterns or contact a specialist, for example, a cutter or tailor; the patterns will be useful for the future.
So, stock up on a pattern if you want to sew quickly, correctly and beautifully. In the meantime, use your knits with a perfect fit.
The nuances of manually reducing a T-shirt
Sewing knitwear by hand is not very convenient, but this is the only way out when the machine “doesn’t work.” On the other hand, you are your own boss when your equipment malfunctions.
The fastest way to hand sew is to sew the T-shirt pieces together and overcast the edges at the same time. Be sure to baste the product with a thick stitch so that the combined parts do not slip.
The most difficult thing is to achieve the elasticity of a knitted product when working with your hands, but an overcast seam provides sufficient plasticity. It is advisable to stock up on elastic threads for knitwear in craft stores.
How to reduce the size of a product that is decorated with a pattern or embroidery
Most often, the category of “favorite” summer items includes light knitwear with prints, embroidery, beads and stones. If your plans do not include hiding excess weight or a belly that has become rounder over the winter, we suggest tailoring your favorite T-shirts and tank tops to fit your figure.
Attention! You need to work with the drawing especially carefully, making sure that the indentations along the edges are absolutely symmetrical!
A thing that is too narrow can distort the pattern on the chest, so lovers of tight knitwear should not get too carried away with experiments with elasticity.
Advice! If, when reducing the size, the design is distorted or when re-cut it goes into the armhole, you can make the front part slightly wider than the back. But the seam line itself and the sleeve cap must match.
Ways to solve the problem
How to make a large cotton T-shirt smaller?
The following methods will help you reduce a T-shirt size at home:
- Machine washable. How to wash it so that it shrinks? To do this, you need to select the hottest wash mode at a temperature of 90 degrees. After the procedure she will sit down.
- What can you do to make your item shrink after washing? Placement in hot water. If the T-shirt stretches, its original size also stretches (it becomes larger). Reduce the product by one size. To do this, you need to boil the water for five minutes, remove it from the stove and then immediately lower the product there. It is recommended to dry in the fresh air or in an apartment, but not in a washing machine. To make a T-shirt smaller by two or more sizes, put it in water immediately after boiling. After boiling, the container with water must be removed from the stove. Wait no more than 20 minutes. With this method, things fit three sizes (this is the maximum size). After such treatment, it is advisable to dry it in an automatic dryer.
- What should I do to make the T-shirt fit? If the above methods do not work, then most likely your item is made of synthetic or mixed fibers. It can be sutured. To do this, you need to try on a T-shirt and pin the places in the armhole, at the waist and along the bottom edge. Remove, lay out and, so that the T-shirt is not too small, leave a seam allowance of about 10 mm. Trace with chalk or pencil along the contour, taking into account the allowance on the wrong side. Cut off the finished edge and sew a new seam using a sewing machine. It will work with an overlocker.
How to hem a neckline
Sometimes, due to prolonged wear and frequent washing, the neck of a T-shirt can stretch and look different than when purchased. On the Internet you can find a lot of tips on how to hem a neckline. We will talk about several below.
What you will need:
- pins;
- hand needle for knitwear with a blunt tip;
- or a sewing machine.
Collar hemming method No. 1
Progress:
- Turn the T-shirt inside out.
- Fold the edge of the collar and pin it with pins.
- Sew by hand or on a sewing machine.
It is important that in the end your seam is elastic!
Collar hemming method No. 2
There is another option for hemming a T-shirt collar, which involves cutting it off and then re-sewing it back on.
- Pull the collar away from the T-shirt.
- Spread the shoulder collar about two centimeters.
- Carefully smooth out the entire fabric.
- Cut the seam from the trim strip.
- Stretch the bar by ironing it.
- Finish any of the long edges with an overlocker.
- Place the T-shirt and placket with right sides facing each other.
- Baste so that the neckline and raw edge match.
- Cut off the rest of the strip.
- Sew the placket to the fabric.
- Unscrew the bar and baste.
- Sew the strip and topstitch it at a distance of half a centimeter.
- Sew and finish the shoulder seam area.
2016 Petite Trends
The new season is rich in interesting trends. I have already written about what clothes are fashionable in 2016, but unfortunately, not all of them are suitable for short girls. Let's see which ones you can safely adopt and which ones are best avoided.
- White shirt. A universal trend that has not left the catwalks for several years. For petite girls, it is better to tuck it into trousers or a skirt.
- Stripes. Be careful with psychedelic prints like tie dye. Wide horizontal stripes can make you look shorter and add volume.
- Sculpted folds and pleating. Just like stripes, they visually elongate the figure, and therefore you can safely wear a pleated skirt or dress.
- Wrap skirt. An excellent thing, it allows you to emphasize the beauty of your legs, adds roundness, and hides your tummy. For fragile short girls, it is better to choose a wrap skirt with a tulip cut; a full-length A-line skirt is suitable. And, of course, do not forget about the correct length!
- Shine. Now you can wear things in metallic shades, embroidered with sequins or made from fabrics with lurex on weekdays, for example, to work. If you are small and thin, feel free to buy a shiny dress; if you have chic volumes, limit yourself to a small sparkling wardrobe item, for example, a handbag or shoes. It is better to add glitter where you want to create additional volume.
- Slip dress. A half-forgotten trend is returning to the catwalks and streets. Almost any petite girl can afford a silk dress; it will look especially good with melange sweaters or khaki jackets. When choosing, make sure that such a dress fits you well.
- Bare shoulders. An old trend in a new interpretation - now the neckline area is closed, the emphasis is placed exclusively on the shoulders.
- Hourglass silhouette. This year, designers literally demand that the girl has the appropriate figure. And since even the models are not perfect, they gird the girls with a belt. A great trend for all female representatives. For petite girls, it is better to choose thin, narrow belts.
- Paperbag - you need to be very careful with this trend! If you are a petite girl with an ideal figure and your legs are long enough relative to your body, then you can play around with this trend very carefully. But... if you are unsure, then it is better not to take risks.
Reducing the size of a cotton or synthetic T-shirt at home - useful tips
How to reduce the size of a T-shirt? Surely this has happened to many people when they give you an incredibly beautiful thing, but it turns out to be small or, conversely, large. It immediately becomes so offensive, because this is a gift that, it would seem, should be rejoiced at. Don’t throw away new clothes, and don’t re-gift presents.
Don’t despair if the donated textile product turns out to be too big for you. This problem is much easier to solve than if the thing were small. You can make a T-shirt smaller with your own hands using one of the methods suggested in this article. Of course, there are not as many of them as we would like, but they are all guaranteed to be effective.
Video material
So, if you carefully read the article and followed all the tips, instructions and directions, then there should be absolutely no problems associated with reducing clothes by several sizes. We hope that you have learned a lot of new, educational and, of course, useful things from this article and in the future you will not have any problems if you need to reduce the size of a T-shirt. Now you won’t need to put your favorite but big things aside as if in a “black box”, because you already know how to solve this problem yourself, quickly and cheaply.
How to sew pants by hand
Initially, you should decide in which directions you need to sew your trousers. So, you can sew in the length of the product (shorten), the width of the trouser legs themselves, along the hips (at the waist or along the entire length), remove flares, and adjust the waist.
Sometimes you can do without a pattern. This applies to small adjustments to things. For example, changing the length, inserting small darts, narrowing the bottom of the trousers. And sometimes a pattern is required. This applies to adjusting clothing around the waist. The less you change, the easier it is to change.
Preparation
First, the product is washed. For example, cotton and wool shrink the product and can fit to size.
Then the trousers are ironed. This is necessary to prevent errors and irregularities. Trying on pants. Excess fabric is marked with pins.
It is always advisable to have chalk or soap on hand for marking, a sewing ruler, scissors, pins, thread, and a sewing machine. It is better not to draw with a pen or pencil, otherwise marks will remain.
How to sew straps on a T-shirt
It is very easy to shorten the straps on a T-shirt:
- the strap comes off on one side (preferably from the back);
- excess tissue is removed;
- the part is returned to its place and carefully sewn
Important! Before cutting off the length of the straps, you need to carefully measure the length that you should end up with.
Thin straps are easier to sew in
Do-it-yourself suturing: is it worth doing?
It should be understood that reducing the size using boiling water will not harm the integrity of the T-shirt. You should use a tailor’s tool if you are absolutely sure that the item will acquire the desired size and no one will notice your intervention in this later. To sew a T-shirt, you will have to cut it in the right place and sew it together. If you make a mistake, you will not only end up with a size you don't need, but you will also ruin the shape of the T-shirt. At the same time, inaccurate stitching, even with successful size compression, can lead to the visibility of your intervention due to sloppy work and visible seams. Therefore, it is best to add some stylish details in the form of stripes, inscriptions and the like at the suturing site.
How to work with different fabrics
Before looking for specific recommendations on how to sew a T-shirt or other item, you should take a close look at the fabric from which it is made. Working with each material has its own specifics. Depending on the type of fabric, a suitable needle, thread and even the size of scissors are selected.
If the T-shirt does not fit, it can be adjusted to the desired size
Thus, for sewing thin fabrics, thin threads and small needles are used. The color of the thread must match the basic tone of the material.
When choosing scissors, the property of the material, such as the degree of cutting resistance, is taken into account. For materials such as linen, cotton, synthetics it is large, for woolen fabrics it is small
If the selected fabric is prone to shrinkage, before you start cutting it, the cut (or the finished product to be altered) should first be subjected to wet heat treatment (WHT).
Knitted fabric requires a special approach when sewing
For loose fabrics (for example, silk), it is necessary to provide for more significant seam allowances and prepare an overlocker in advance - experts recommend in this case processing the edges before starting to baste the product.
Fabrics that are slippery or prone to deformation must be cut and recut with the utmost care and with very sharp scissors. It is most convenient to attach them to a cardboard template before starting work.
T-shirt beach dress
You will need:
- T-shirt (possibly with a bright pattern)
- scissors
- needle and thread.
1. Cut off the sleeves. Save them - you will need them later.
2. Place the T-shirt with your back facing you.
3. Cut large crescent moons where the sleeves were - do this only on this part of the shirt (the back), DO NOT touch the front.
4. Turn the T-shirt over again and cut out the collar, about 2cm from the stitching.
5. Turn the T-shirt over again and cut this part of the T-shirt in a straight line just below the collar. It turns out that you have cut off the part that connects the back - don’t worry, then you will connect all the parts using a “braid”.
6. Cut the lower back of the T-shirt into three equal vertical strips. Pull these strips a little to make them longer and a little narrower.
7. Start knitting a braid from these 3 strips (from bottom to top).
8. Take your collar, fold it in half and find the center. Mark this place.
9. Using thread and needle, sew the braid to the center of the collar.
10. Cut strips from one of the sleeve cutouts and use it to cover the seams that are visible where the braid meets the collar. Simply wrap the strip around the joint and secure with thread and needle.

How to hem a T-shirt on the sides
Without using a sewing machine, a topstitcher and an overlocker, it is very difficult to hem a T-shirt on the sides. The last two tools can be replaced with a sewing machine that has an overlock stitch.
Instructions:
- Mark on the sides the places where the seams will later be.
- Trim the overlock seam at the sides and armhole, but do not cut the fabric.
- Mark the place where the seam will be (it is better to use a template).
- Fold the product in half, align the cutting lines and pin everything together.
- Mark the future armhole line.
- Pin together the back, hem and armhole.
- Fold the T-shirt along the seams at the shoulders and pin it in place.
- Cut off the excess fabric, leaving an allowance of about 0.7-0.8 centimeters.
- Fold the sleeves together, pinching them at the bottom.
- Mark the highest point on the rim line with chalk or soap.
- Make marks on the front and transfer them to the second sleeve.
- Remove the pins.
- Align the cuffs and armholes, as well as the cuff point and shoulder seams.
- Sew all seams.
It is better to sew the seams on the sides and sleeves in one go.
Stretch – suitable for shrunken trousers
If your jeans become too small, it’s not a problem. Denim, the main material for denim pants, has good elasticity and strength, which allows you to stretch them in the waistband right at home without “surgical intervention.” There are two most common ways to stretch pants.
You can increase the size of your pants by soaking and stretching, but the result is questionable
Spraying
To do this, you will need a spray bottle into which you need to pour warm, clean water. After this, wet the belt from the inside and outside until the material is completely saturated with water. Stretch the belt with a few smooth movements. The main thing is not to stretch the material where there are abrasions, otherwise there is a risk of simply tearing the product. After the belt has dried, you can look at the result using a centimeter.
