A modern classic iron must have a built-in steam generator. He not only irons “dry”, but also, if necessary, presses the parka (with different intensities, depending on the model) in order to cope with the ironing of some particularly stubborn item. To do this, you need to pour a little water into the iron. These types of irons are the most common, and there are the most of them in stores.
Iron with separate steam generator . They are also simply called steam generators or steam stations. The point is that the steam generator is not part of the iron, but a separate device connected to it with a steam hose and an electrical wire. The steam capabilities of such models are usually more serious: the steam is more powerful and its supply is more stable. They are needed by those who iron large things a lot and often (sheets and duvet covers of these models can be ironed even when folded several times). Steam generators also provide long ironing - the volume of the water box is larger.
The travel iron is the younger brother of the classic iron. It is small in size, weighs less, and often has a folding handle so it doesn’t take up much space in your suitcase. Recently, most travel irons are also ironed with steam: you can pour a small amount of water into them - just enough for one ironing.
A cordless iron has a form factor close to the classic one, but heating occurs at the base station and not directly from the outlet. The main advantage: the iron does not have a wire, which sometimes interferes with ironing and limits the user. But there is also a minus: periodically you need to return the iron to the base station - otherwise it will cool down. Therefore, it will be useful only for those who usually do not do a lot of ironing.
2. Weight and dimensions
Before buying an iron, take it in your hand for a while - understand whether it is comfortable to hold, or whether it is too heavy for you. Naturally, the smallest ones are travel irons: when traveling, space in your bag and weight matter. They are small and weigh no more than a kilogram (mostly 500-700 g without water).
Some models of classic steam irons weigh up to 1.8 kg (but this is a lot, it is better to choose ones weighing up to 1.5 kg), and they are larger in size than travel irons. You probably won’t want to put one of these in your suitcase, but it’s perfect for ironing at home. Cordless irons are similar to conventional irons in size and weight.
Another thing is steam generators. The iron for some models can weigh 800 grams, which is convenient for ironing, especially long-term ironing. The usual figure is 1.1-1.4 kg. But a separate unit with a boiler and water box requires additional storage space. And the weight of the entire device (including the iron) can reach 5 kg - which is noticeable when carried.
3. Power
You should not chase a super-powerful iron (2000 W or more). Yes, it will heat up quickly and do an excellent job of ironing. But lower power models (from 1500 W) will also do this, spending a little more time on heating. If you do not iron too often and only a little, choose a medium-power model.
For travel irons, a power of about 1000 W is relevant - for ironing in traveling conditions, this is quite enough.
Steam generators usually have a power of 2000 W or more, the figure can even slightly exceed 3000 W: this is necessary for stable and fast operation of the boiler and maintaining high steam pressure.
4. Sole material
What should the soleplate of the iron be like? Its task is to glide well on different fabrics, to be as resistant to burning as possible and resistant to damage (scratches, chips due to buttons, zippers, etc.). In general, ironing with high quality, without spoiling things and not spoiling itself.
An aluminum sole is a sign of an inexpensive iron. It is very demanding on temperature conditions for certain fabrics, and is prone to scratches - aluminum is a soft metal. The advantages are easy cleaning, lightness, quick heating.
Stainless steel soles are very common. They heat up more slowly, but otherwise are not so fancy: they are easy to clean, glide well thanks to the presence of special polishing, and are resistant to damage (steel is harder than aluminum).
The main advantage of ceramics and metal ceramics is their excellent glide over fabric, including at high heating temperatures. The iron, as they say, flies around the thing. With such soles, the risk of fabric sticking is minimal and they are easy to clean. The big disadvantage is its fragility: you need to use the iron very carefully. It is better to pay attention to models with metal ceramics.
Glass ceramics, Teflon, titanium are modern sole coatings that provide easy and comfortable ironing. They have almost no disadvantages: excellent glide (especially with Teflon), no sticking or burning (but you shouldn’t leave a hot iron on things, of course), easy care, resistance to damage. Except that with a Teflon sole, you should be more careful when ironing things with metal elements - otherwise you can damage it.
Our advice. We recommend irons with additional attachments on the soleplate: for ironing fabrics that require particularly careful handling (silk, synthetics, etc.), especially if the soleplate itself is made of aluminum or stainless steel.
5. Ironing temperature for different fabrics
Most irons have a temperature dial on the body - different fabrics should be ironed at different temperatures. Usually it does not indicate degrees, but rather the type of fabric, as well as the minimum and maximum temperature levels (Min and Max). Here are the temperature conditions relevant for ironing the most common fabrics:
- Linen, a mixture of cotton and linen - 210-230°C
- Cotton - 150°C
- Silk - about 130°C
- Viscose - 120-130°C
- Cotton with polyester - 110°C
There are irons where there is no temperature regulator on the body. Usually these are irons of steam stations (steam generators). They have a “one size fits all” temperature setting: the sole heats up to only 130-140°C, but in symbiosis with a powerful steam supply, this allows you to iron even “difficult” items: linen, folded several times, etc.
6. Steam functions
Almost all modern irons support steam ironing. It is generated in the iron body, or by a separate steam generator (in the case of steam stations) and is supplied to things through holes in the sole. The more there are, the better: the steam is distributed more evenly throughout the fabric. In high-quality irons there can be more than 100 such holes. Steam makes ironing easier - you can deal with even the most “unruly” wrinkles quickly.
Constant steam supply . This is a mode where steam is continuously supplied from the iron during the ironing process. The amount is measured in grams per minute. For modern irons this figure is from 20 g/min. If you often iron heavily wrinkled items, it is better to buy a model with constant steam of 40-50 g/min. It’s good if there is an adjustment for the steam intensity. There are irons with automatic ironing programs: they already provide for the generation of the optimal amount of steam at a particular temperature.
In steam stations (steam generators), the intensity of constant steam is usually higher: 100-200 g/min.
Steam boost is a short-term powerful supply of steam under high pressure. It is needed for especially difficult cases - when the fabric “does not want” to be smoothed out, it is very wrinkled. Activated by pressing a special button on the iron body. The intensity of the steam boost of most household steam irons is 70-200 g/min (depending on the model). In steam stations it can reach 450 g/min.
Many irons can operate in vertical steam . In this case, steam is generated and comes out of the iron even if it is not in a horizontal position, which can be useful for tidying curtains, things hanging on hangers (quickly smooth out a couple of folds on a shirt), outerwear, etc.
Note that the vertical steaming mode at steam stations is most effective due to the powerful steam supply. With ordinary irons, it happens that this function can be purely declarative in nature, but in reality be useless. Vertical steamers are the most effective for this type of clothing care.
7. Water tank
Since a modern iron is a steam iron, it has a water reservoir. The volume varies, depending on the type of iron and model: from 150 to 500 ml. For steam generators (steam stations) it is larger - up to 2 liters: you can iron for a long time. We recommend purchasing an iron whose water box walls are transparent or translucent: it’s easy to keep track of how full it is.
Also pay attention to the hole for filling in water: it should be of a “convenient” diameter so that you don’t have to “aim” for a long time. Plus, its location should be such that there is no inconvenience in servicing the iron.
8. Other features
Auto shutdown . A modern iron cannot be forgotten to be turned off. Or rather, it is possible, but this will not lead to catastrophic consequences: the iron itself “deactivates” after some time. If it remains turned on in a horizontal position, it will turn off after 30 seconds. And if it stood vertically - after 8-10 minutes (depending on the model). There are irons that work - heat up - only if they are in the hands of the user. Auto power off is a very useful feature, make sure it is included before purchasing.
Spraying water (spray) . Some fabrics iron better if they are slightly dampened before ironing. The iron will help: press a special button, and water sprays out from its front part - iron the dampened fabric. Convenient and useful.
Anti-drip system . On some fabrics, stains form in places where water gets on them, the appearance deteriorates, and in general the whole thing can become unusable because of this. The anti-drip system prevents water from getting on the fabric during ironing without steam at a low sole temperature.

If your iron does not have an anti-scale system, fill it with filtered, softened water, or use special water for irons, which is commercially available.
9. Ergonomics and convenience
The iron should be comfortable so that your hand does not quickly get tired from ironing. Before purchasing, “try on” several models: check whether it is comfortable for you to hold the iron, whether your hand does not slip, and whether the wire is in the way (this is also important).
The iron handle can be closed or open (without a rear segment). It cannot be said that one type is clearly more convenient than the other. Everything here is individual: some are more comfortable working with a “closed” iron, while others are more comfortable with an “open” one - try both options in the store and choose the one that suits you. Some open-handle irons lack the ability to stand upright, which may not appeal to everyone.
Length of the network cable . To avoid interference during ironing, so that the iron can reach all areas of the fabric on the ironing board, the wire should not be short. But it’s also not necessary to be too long, it will only get in the way. Aim for a length of about 2-2.5 meters. For cordless irons, this parameter is less important.
